On the other side of the caution tape– “return to the scene of the crime”

This picture was taken earlier in the semester with one of my best friends Alyssa. I had fun finding a picture that I could take to the place in which it was taken.  When I was taking the picture of the picture I realized just how many pictures we take in the kitchen. That seems to be the place we all gather to be around one another. We have some great memories in that kitchen!

Design Assignment: Expression

Expression

For my last set of stars, I chose to do the assignment consisting of making something that expresses who I am. I used a picture that my sister took of me, adding words and symbols defining myself. I chose this picture because this is the most natural I could ever get, when I am happy, I am so happy I could burst, and when I am laughing, you could probably hear me from a mile away. This picture represents me, who I am, and who I would like to be all the time. If I am not happy, I am usually crying about something, sad to say. I used the quote, “Life’s too short to be anything but happy,” because there are no better words to live by. I am only 21 and can say that I have taken life way too seriously, but why? I have realized over the past couple years that this quote couldn’t be more right, so why live life mad or sad all the time? What’s the point? I added in there, “keep calm and have a cupcake,” because I tend to get really overwhelmed and stressed out when it comes to school, work, and real life. But I have also come to the conclusion that I take school way to seriously, and I shouldn’t. If I don’t get that A, I freak out, but why? I guess because there is such an emphasis on being the best in society, that I couldn’t settle for being anything less. My mom always tells me to just breathe, and even gave me a notebook that says, “Keep Calm and Have a Cupcake,” which I actually might start doing. The last few words are, “Don’t let life pass by,” almost like a carpe diem kind of quote, live for today and not for tomorrow, because it might be too late. I used stars to symbolize, reaching for my dreams, which I will always do until I make it there, and hearts to represent the power of love, and just how important it is in my life. I used Picnik.com as well, playing around with the effects and adding stickers and texts!

Design Assignment: Clever Caption

Boo Boo

For my last two stars, I chose the assignment in which I had to pick a picture that I took and make a clever caption. I chose the picture of my dog when I was home last week. Whenever my mom leaves for work she always puts blankets on the couch, where Bentley can lay, but every time I wake up and walk out I find him taking advantage of his opportunity in sleeping on the actual couch. He always looks at me and knows he is wrong, but is too lazy to move, but as soon as I pick up the phone or walk away from him, he moves over to the side with the blankets almost as if he knows I am going to tell on him! It’s extremely precious. For this picture, I uploaded it into picnik.com, made the picture black and white, soft, and added the text.

Design Assignment: The Big Picture

Mideast Egypt

For my third design assignment, I decided to choose the one where I had to take any photo from The Big Picture http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/ and overlay it with lyrics from a Top 100 song. I chose the picture with thousands of people on a bridge with different flags along with the lyrics from Micheal Jackson’s song, We Are The World. This song reveals such a big message about life and love, that I believed it went with the picture as soon as I saw it!

Design Assignment: What’s your fortune in the Escapades?

Forunes

This assignment seemed kind of fun and creative. I liked coming up with my own fortunes involving the escapades or a journey or some sort. I used Paint and Iphoto to create this image.

Design Assignment: Autobiography Cover

tunnellight

I chose the assignment of designing a autobiography cover if I were to ever write one. I used the website Picnik to play with the effects and add text to my picture. I chose a picture of a tunnel with a light at the end. My life seems to always feel as if there are dead ends, but then hope steps in and the light emerges. The best title for this cover would be, “There is always light at the end of the tunnel,”signifying no matter how hard life can get the light will guide you through the mess… always.

Troll Quotes- Do or do not there is no try!

Find an image of a well known figure, add to it a famous quote by someone related in some way to the figure in the image and then attribute the quote to a third, related figure. From the official site: How It Works 1) Get a picture of someone people idolize. Obi Wan Kenobi, Barack Obama, Captain Kirk — any beloved public figure will do. 2) Slap on a famous quotation from a similar character from a different book or movie. Pick something close enough that a non-fan might legitimately confuse them. If you’re using Captain Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation, for example, you’ll probably want to grab a quote from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica. 3) Attribute the quotation to a third character, from yet a third universe. This way, nothing about your image is correct, and you’re trolling fans of all three characters at once. Worth  2 Stars.

I chose the 3 master figures in 3 wonderful film series.  Dumbledore, Gandalf, and Yoda.

Common Everyday Object— Cheetah Vibrant!

Take a picture of a common ever day object and manipulate the colors.  Worth 2 Stars!

This one I manipulated the colors of the brushes to bring them into the forefront of the picture.  I wanted to eliminate the colors of the background.

The Beautiful Human Color! Color Splash!

k

Color splash is a technique to emphasize details- you remove all color from a photo, and then restore original color to a single object, e.g. a green apple on a table. Think of the Girl in the red dress from Schindler’s List.  Worth 2 Stars

I used Photobucket.com to make the picture grey and then reapply the color to the face.  I know people will think of color splash as being wild or vibrant colors, but for me the most important features are the faces of my children.  That is what I wanted to emphasize.

More Visual Assignments

Spent some more time doing some of the ds106 visual assignments.  I was drawn to the Troll Quote assignment.  My old desktop background was a picture of Patrick Stewart that said “Use the Force, Harry”, with the quote attributed to Gandalf.  That was the first example I had ever seen and it kept me in stitches for far longer than it had any right to.  I resisted the urge to go the geek route and did this instead:

Troll Quote - Sheen - Slater - Downey

I really hope people get this, because having to explain it would jut ruin everything forever.

I also did the assignment for “an album cover” (which, thanks to an SNL Celebrity Jeopardy sketch, I keep calling “anal bum cover”, in my best Sean Connery).  The band name came from a random wikipedia entry, which turned out to be tonna perdix.  The album title came from the quote ”Let the fear of danger be a spur to prevent it; he that fears not, gives advantage to the danger.” ~Francis Quarles.  This too, having been randomly generated.  Then the picture (you guessed it, random)Mall With Intentional Camera Movement

Mix until blended and…

anAl bum Cover

I added the jewel case for authenticity.  What kind of music would Tonna Perdix be?  Was their older stuff better?  I hear they really sold-out with “Gives Advantage to the Danger”.

Now I want to go watch some Christian Slater movies.  Pump Up the Volume, perhaps.
