Whalen-made Assignment #2

This is my handiwork: The Ultimate Merger.

Yes the example photo is my work:

But I decided to make another one:

So the first one is obvious it a merger between McDonalds and Burger King. The second one is way more subtle. Its Canon and Nikon.

The hardest thing about doing this assignment really is finding the right text. But really just one google search should do the trick. The Burger King/McDonalds one was a bit trickier beacsue it involved some more picture editing.

I chose to make this assignment because a) its a funny idea and b) the really subtle ones can mess with your mind. In all honest, many of the products are really the same thing and you’re only buying the brand. Perhaps on some profound, existential level this is what I was getting at, but really I just thought it was funny.

Whalen-made Assignment #1

That’s right kid-os I made an assingment. Its called Vicarious Graffiti.

Unfortunately I messed up the post a little bit and the example photo does not appear. What follows will be a tutorial of sorts for how to accomplish this assignment, in which I will describe how I made the attached picture titled “Charlie Graffiti.”

First off you have to get you starting image. Some people posses the uncanny ability to hand draw stencil like images, to which I will say “Good for you, skip the following sentences but come back later on.” Now, once you get your image/idea the next phase is to upload it into some kind of photo editing software. I used pixlr.com because that’s what I’m most familiar with (even though I’m trying to become more adept  with GIMP).

you’re all thinking it.

After I loaded the image into pixlr I first started messing with the brightness and contrast. Generally speaking, most pictures you use will be too bright and as such will mess with the steps to come later; however to what extent you darken is up to your own judgment. Additionally its always a good idea to increase the contrast to help define the image’s lines. Once this is done you’re going to want to de-saturate the image, I don’t know why but these things always work better when done in black and white.

By now you should have black and white image, that’s a little darker than usual with some pretty good line definition. This next step differs depending on what editing program you use, but I know that in pixlr is called “posterize.” It going to ask you how many layers you want, and again this part is up to your own judgment. Each image is different so don’t be afraid to play around a little.

should look about like this

After this things get pretty easy. Once that filter is on, go back and click “threshold.” This will generate the classic stencil look for your image. After this, simply find a picture of some building or wall that’s pretty blank. Add you new stencil image as a new layer to this building pic. It’s easier if you start big and go small, so before you transform the stencil image to fit on the wall try and eliminate as much of the layer’s background as you can with out touching any of the image itself. What you can’t get just make it match the building’s color.

Now for the fun part. You can now scale down, move, mess with your computer made stencil image so that it looks like its actually part of the wall. Add some text with yours like I did. Mine is picture of Charlie Kelly with the words “Carol! Carol!”. Sort of a joke for the fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Enjoy and have fun.

Assignments Created

Your Favorite Favorites

The first assignment I created for this week was called Your Favorite Favorites. This was an audio assignment that I created that required you to choose a few of your favorite songs (however many you choose is up to you) and you edit and combine them using separate parts of the song and try to create one fluid piece. This was an interesting experience because it was difficult to copy, paste, and delete portions of each song and try to keep them in order with what was what. I really liked the idea of people using some of their favorite songs and trying to create one song out of all of them. I hope that people like the assignment and try to complete it and hope they think it’s fun!

Something Is Wrong Here

The second assignment I created for this week I called Something Is Wrong Here. This was a visual assignment that I created. It required you to choose a scene from any season of your choosing and to incorporate another picture on top of that of something that would NEVER happen in that particular scene/season. For the example, I used a picture of a town in the mountains covered with lots and lots of snow and used a picture of three kids eating watermelon to put in the middle of the road. I liked the combination of this because whenever you think of winter, you would never think of watermelon.

Make a Daytime Picture look like Night time

I chose to make up a design assignment that I think is worth 2 stars. All you have to do is take a picture in the day time and use a program to change into a picture that looks like it was taken at night. Then put the two pictures side by side so everyone can see the difference.

I Spy Minions

I created a Visual Assignment that is worth three stars. The reason why I made it three stars is because making the background can take some time and become tedious. Also being able to use the correct tools to make the picture just right can take some thought and trial and error steps.  I was inspired by I Spy Game. All you have to do is make a background and disguise the person, place, or thing into the background. Once you decide what to do use any program to put it together. I used Paint to help me put my I spy picture together. You can be very creative with this assignment and it is fun!!

Here is the I Spy Minions Assignment.

Save as Desktop Background

I really like to make my own computer desktop wallpapers and so I use the program Paint to create mine. I created an assignment that allows you to create you own. I made this assignment 2 stars because it can be simple and just a good one of putting different images together and being able to keep it for your own use.  You can use any program and collect images that fit a particular theme. For my example I chose my favorite shows.

Did our Mother’s Plan this

I created my very own visual assignment. One day I was looking through my friends pictures and came across a baby picture that was similar to one I had taken when I was little too. This made us laugh so much, so for the assignment I thought it would be cool to take these two pictures and put them side to side. This is where my idea came from to create an assignment. It’s fairly simple but can be fun so I gave it 2 stars.

You can find this assignment under Visual Assignments called Did Our Mother’s Plan This.

New Assignment: Pictures into Words

For this new assignment the objective is to take pictures of objects in your surroundings that could possibly look like letters and form words with them. Try not to use letters in your surroundings, but I understand that some letters are hard to get!

New Assignment Idea: Makeup your pet!

I knew I wanted my assignment idea to involve some sort of animal. I feel there need to be more animal related assignments for ds106. I came up with the idea of “Makeup your pet”.

It involves taking a picture of your pet and painting “makeup” on him/her. I do not necessarily recommend actually putting makeup on your pet, as this can be harmful/a bit cruel to your pet. The idea of the assignment is to use your creativity and makeup your pet in any way you want!

I chose my dog Lilo and decided to use pixlr to paint her up! I added on eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara and eyelashes, blush, lipstick and even a little bow!

Presto! Mashup!

I created a Mashup assignment!

This was a difficult assignment category to create a new assignment for. However, I was up for the challenge. I went through several ideas trying to create a mashup. A lot of failure was because “PwnYouTube” ( the MP4 converter I use) would not work for clips I wanted. However, I finally came across a Hilary Duff clip that worked. And I thought, man it would be funny to show her back in Lizzy Mcguire compared to her singing career. I don’t know much about Hillary now, but I loved Lizzy Mcquire as a kid. It was fun going through old episodes. I used one where Hilary is upset talking to her mom and cut the clip down in MPEG. I then found a clip of her singing. I used two related dialogues to give the mashup rhythm. This assignment takes thought, creativity, a good amount of searching and technical skills. All that considered, I rated it 4 stars which put me a good amount over for the 7 stars needed this week.
