minimalist movie poster.

The truth is out there.

The truth is out there.

For this assignment, I initially thought that I wanted to use a movie. After seeing a previous post re-creating Snow White, I toyed with the idea of using my own favorite Disney/folk tale movie: Sleeping Beauty. Then, I re-considered going with a grittier theme like in my four icons post.

The grittier theme idea lead to a spookier idea, and I was instantly reminded of my favorite television show. I discovered The X-Files at an older age than most (mostly because I was only 1-2 when the show originally began airing) but quickly fell in love with the mythos of the show as a whole as well as the clever, eerie individual episodes. Scully is a personal hero of mine with her intelligence, beauty, strength, and courage, and forget Californication–David Duchovny is only Fox Mulder in my eyes!

Without quick access to Photoshop, I started this piece on the Pixlr editor. I laid down a gray-green background to echo the alien aspect of the TV show, and then I put my own spin on the show’s logo. I emphasized the flying saucer shape to further the alien feel, added bold text in PowerPoint (the Pixlr editor doesn’t allow me to add text, which is apparently a commonly-reported bug), and a vignette effect.

Viola–spooky, 90s minimalism!

Don’t talk about it.

Guess in the comments!

Took a while for me to figure out how to represent this movie’s unique, layered plot in minimalist images, but once I finally did, I had access to the awesome icons thanks to…

Movie Scenes That Changed Our Lives – Assignment #1 7/17/14

The following video is a compilation of the videos I feel best have changed my life. Please enjoy!

  • Rocky Balboa

I grew up watching all of Rocky’s movies. He has served as both a role model and a source of inspiration throughout all of my childhood.  The message of the clip is beautiful. We all have had life’s fair share of challenges. However, no matter what you are responsible for what happens next. You can choose to give up and stop or you can choose to keep pushing to achieve the goal.

  • The Pursuit of Happiness

I think we can all agree that we have been where Will Smith was. The emotion is real in the scene. It was one of Will Smith’s best appearances. He had been to hell and back, yet still found a way to preserve. From the beginning to the end, this motive was both touching and emotional. I think the message was clear, if you work hard and never give up, good things will happen.

  • Despicable Me 2

I am a sucker for these movies. I find the minions are adorable. The fact that they don’t talk further draws me in as a viewer. I am able to connect with them in a deeper emotional context. I think the only way that was possible was the fact that they don’t talk.

Process:

I used two different tools to help me finish this assignment.

I used the clip converter to grab the videos from youtube to download  to my computer. I think that process was straight forward, as all you had to do was insert the clip you wanted to be downloaded to an MP4. However, the process I found difficult was using iMovie to arrange the clip appropriatelyScreen Shot 2014-07-17 at 10.17.18 PMThe hard part was trying to upload the videos on to iMovie. But after watching the following tutorial, all I had to do was place the clips in my movie folder.

Movie Voice Machines -ds106 Audio Assignments 7/10/14 #2

This one is a stretch, so please bear with me. The concept seem much funnier in my head. But there are a couple of contextual cues in my piece, see if you can pick them up. This assignment was fun, but it was a challenge!!

If you don’t figure out, you can find out the answer here.

May I Take Your Order? – ds106 Audio Assignments 7/10/14

The world’s most pickiest eater. This was for a to-go order at Mike’s Italian Food. It was done in a middle eastern accent. Servers will truly understand how annoying this order is. Please enjoy.

It was for a Chicken Parmigiana with side sauce and angle hair past. Then it was for a side house salad, with side dress. And to top it all off, the customer wanted a desert with the whip cream on the side.

The Midnight Drive to McDonalds – Sound Effects Story Blog Post

After a long day of work, I came home to begin on my ds106 assignment. To be honest with you, I had no idea what I would do or write about. So, as any typical college student, I began to procrastinate. I found myself on pinterest and landed on the food and drink section. This was a poor choice, as I hadn’t eaten all day. Today was one of those days, in which their wasn’t even enough time to eat food. Anyway, my stomach began to grumble. I thought watching television would distract me from my hunger. I was already cozy in bed and didn’t want to leave. I turned one of my favorite animated series on Fox Bob’s Burgers. Admittedly, this was another poor choice on my behalf. My stomach began to grumble even more, as my hunger grew. No longer could I take the despair, I jumped into my car and raced to McDonalds, only to find out they were closed!!

Background Information:  Screen Shot 2014-07-09 at 10.51.12 PM

This is a screenshot of Audacity. Great music editing software. Watch the youtube video on how to use it though!!

Creating this MP3 was both entertaining and difficult. This was the first time I have created a sound effects story. Like it stated on the cpsc 106 blog, I downloaded Audacity to edit my music clips. At first, I was reluctant to watch the youtube video on how to use the software. But after many failed attempts, I caved in and watched the video. Surprisingly it was very helpful. One of the key tools I learned was how to overlap pieces, which was crucial to tie my piece together. I found all of my clips from Freesounds website. The following are the clips were used for the Mp3: 1# unlock car with beep.wav 2# Car_Door-Open_bulky.aif 3# Door – Close 03.wav 4#Carreving.wav 5#Tires Squeaking.aif

 I hope you guys enjoyed!!

Cartoon The Head! – Design Assignment #4

Cartoon The Head

I am going to take you through my journey for this design assignment, I started by looking for pictures of cartoons. I didn’t know what I was looking for exactly, naturally I began to procrastinate and look at pictures of cars. It is amazing how the human brain works. I was in my room upstairs, I could hear a faint noise coming from the basement, upon further investigation, I found out my siblings were watching Madagascar! Bam, I got my idea for the assignment. I wanted to use the giraffe from Madagascar. Screen Shot 2014-07-04 at 4.58.22 PM

So I went to google and typed in Madagascar giraffe. I downloaded the first image that I could find.

Melman

This image can be found on the following link: http://madagascar.tribute.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Melman.jpg. Anyways, the next part of the assignment is to find a celebrity. Once again, I began my search on Google, and I typed in:

I clicked on the Forbes link and found out for the year 2014, Beyoncé was ranked the World’s Most Powerful Celebrity. I used the picture that Forbes used:

This image can be found on http://www.forbes.com/sites/dorothypomerantz/2014/06/30/beyonce-knowles-tops-the-forbes-celebrity-100-list/. Then, I took the giraffes picture and pasted it on Beyoncé’s face and came up with this! Please enjoy!!

Read Poster – Design Assignment #3

Design a Reading Poster.

As a child, I grew up to the music stylings of 50 Cent. Though at times his lyrics were vulgar, I admired his life story more. He was a man who lived his life through great adversity and has triumphed. He was raised by a mother who worked as a drug dealer. She died when he was only 8 years old.

As a young boy, he was forced to sell drugs to make money for basic necessities. In 2000, an attempt was made on his live. After the failed attempt, 50 Cent began to grow his career. Through all of that adversity, he was able to make music. He is now worth $140 million dollars. He is both a music and business tycoon. I believe he is a good figure to preach about the importance of reading and working hard. I found this image by typing “50 Cent Reading” on Google.

The Big Caption – Design Assignment #2

SOCCER-WORLD/

This photo was an easy choice for me as the Quarter-finals for the World Cup are going on. Today Brazil and Colombia are playing at 4:00pm on ESPN. I found this picture on the big picture website. The link to the original picture is located on http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2014/06/2014_world_cup_goalposts_around_the_world.html. I used the native application on Apple to edit the picture. Using preview, I was able to add text to the picture. I have outlined the step in the following picture. Screen Shot 2014-07-04 at 3.51.16 PM

In the text box image with the “Aa,” I added “Goal!!!” to the picture. In that same drop down menu, I was able to change the color also to lime-green.
