mm green tea :)

Vintage Education Videos is one of the assignments I chose to do.  This assignment consisted of creating an educational, or how to video the way they did it in the 50′s.   I decided to do a video on how to make tea!  I did this because I love drinking eat.  Preferably chamomile or green tea.  I find it really relaxing and love the warmth it brings, specially on cold fall days.  By the time I made this video I was basically a pro at iMovies.

I decided to film myself making tea.  I recorded the video on my iPhone.  Although it doesn’t have the best quality, it didn’t really matter since videos from the 50′s were kind of terrible.  The bad thing about it was that there was no way to pause the video on my phone while it was recording, so I ended up recording a 5 minute long video on how to make tea.  The video was so long because I was still recording while the water was heating up in the microwave and that took forever!!  After recording such thing, it was a hassle emailing it to myself to download it on my computer, so I had to go a different route.  I actually ended up importing my video to my iPhoto (which I had never done) and getting it on my computer that way.  I thought the hard part was over after that, but i was mistaking!  The video was so long that not only did it take forever for iMovie to create thumbnails for it, but there was extensive editing to get done.

Educational videos from the 50′s are usually quick and to the point, so I ended up deleting about 4 minutes from the original video.  Every time I would cut out scenes it made small individual clips within iMovie, so I had ended up with about 16 individual clips.  For each one I had to go in and manually turn off the original volume, and change the setting to black and white.  This was a long process, but adding the music was much quicker since I could do it to the whole thing rather than the individual parts.  After the video was done, I was not happy with it.  I felt like it was missing something.  I tried changing the scene from black and white to the “aged film” effect, but it had color to it and it didn’t look right.  I tried using both the black and white, and the aged film to make it better but was only able to use one at a time.

Since it was impossible to use two effects at the same time, I decided to leave the movie as black and white with the song Merry Go playing on the background.  I exported the file into my desktop and imported it again into iMovie.  Doing this created one clip instead of the 16 original ones I already had.  This allowed me to change the effect on the film (with black and white effect) to aged, which resulted in me having the best of both worlds!  :)

AMV

Well, another day, another double digit number of hours I spend making things for Master…

Due to unforseen reading comprehension problems, it turns out that A) a whole different 15 stars of assignments than originally predicted need to be done, and B) there are 15 stars to do, not 9!

In any case, here‘s a fairly simple AMV that Master and I (okay, me and one of Master’s more tech-savvy friends) put together.

If you tie a lemon to a rainbow

A Word. . . A Picture. . .A Story

For this assignment I I picked the first seven words that came in to my head; lemon, rainbow, tie, nose, window, if, loser. I have no idea where those words came from, but they were there so I used them. As per the instructions I Googled each word and picked one of the first ones that came up. I then imported them in to Windows Movie Maker and created title slides in between the photos to help my story along. I used the speed up effect so it didn’t lag too much. My story kind of came out of no where, its more of a poetic piece.

Video Assignment #4

Last one: Tutorial for the Mother.

Ok, in the video, I call her mom, but everyone calls her Pegs. She already knew how to make a Pandora station, which is what I was going do the tutorial on.
I recorded this using screenr because I couldn’t get jing to upload to youtube. Screenr gives the option to immediately upload to youtube, and it links with your account to make it super easy.  Also, to set up an account, I just plugged in my google account info and chose a username.

I tried my best to talk through the entire thing although apparently, I am NOT good at multitasking. As in talking while typing. Oops. But Pegs will understand. I really thought this was a good assignment because it seems Pegs is always asking me how to do something. Also, with screenr, you can size the record screen to your desired size/screenshot. I like this because you can’t really do that as easily with jing.

Video Assignment #3

The lip synch! woot!

This was the most fun to do. I initially wanted to do it to Carole King’s Way Over Yonder. However, that was WAY too depressing for ds106 (and I already associate that song with funerals..bad). Instead, I dug into what songs are really fun to sing. BETSY Q!!!! Yes, that crazy lady that visited my elementary school every year with the piano and the crazy songs and the berets and yeah, you get the point. And classically, the one I most remember is the I Say No Rap about anti-drugs.

I love to rap. A lot. So I turned on my webcam. I opened iTunes and downloaded the rap. I played it from my library after turning the webcam on. Once I was done lip synching, I just saved the video. It automatically went onto my videos on my hard-drive.  I put it on youtube. This is YouTube gold. Although not Nicole337 material, because I realized that she ACTUALLY sings her songs herself.

PROBLEMS: My daggone body movements were a lot harder to do. I was not sure if I should include hand motions or not, so I stayed pretty simple. I also had a hard time remembering the number of ‘nos’ in the rap. But I LOVE BETSY Q and have since I was five years old. This rap is gold. I love it. I have probably sung that song over 1000 times because it is so fun!

I hope you guys like it. Here it is:

Also, it is VERY embarrassing. Like I felt like I was getting in touch with my middle school self and crossing that off the bucket list.

Falafel Begins

Video Assignment Count: 12

After finishing an assignment were I redubed all of the audio I decided to d the next logical step and complete Joining the Conversation where I only had to dub half the conversation.

Here’s the result:

Now you’re probably asking yourself, “why Isaac. why choose this movie to use in your assignment?” Well friends it should be obvious: Batman is awesome. Also in the world of the internet this scene is parodied quite often and with good results. However as that video shows, almost everyone always messes with what Batman says, because let’s face it he’s kind of goofy in this scene. So as I watched it again, I thought two things 1) dude just dropped his falafel, that sucks 2) what if he was completely not scared the whole time?

Oh by the way for those you who who’ve been living under a rock here’s the orginial:

So. There wasn’t a lot of previous work to work off of. Only one other person has completed the assignment and their link doesn’t work. Other than the Godfather/fluffy cat example and the link in the other paragraph most of the inspiration came right form the ol’ noggin.

Making it was pretty simple, and almost identical to my There Will Be Blood redub. Here what I did was (once in Final Cut Pro) detach the audio. Then play the clip like normal, then when it was the upside down man’s turn to speak I would cut out all of his audio and record a voice over in that time slot. It took me a couple times to get the timing correct but I was able to bang it our pretty quickly. The recording process as wasn’t as hard as last time, because I already had a planned script in my brain.

That’s pretty much it. Just youtube, Final Cut, Batman, and the tasty tasty power of falafel.

Oh, so Brave!

We went back in time!

For the assignment Return to the Silent Era, we had to “take a 3-5 minute trailer of a modern movie and render it in the form of the silent era- convert to black and white, add effects to make it look antiquated, replace the audio with a musical sound track.”

For this assignment I decided to get the trailer from the movie Brave and make it a Silent Black and White movie.  The movie is about a young girl going on a quest, and her actions and ambitions are easily portrayed in the film, and even the movie trailer.  This was the first video assignment I decided to do, and I am glad that I chose to do it first.  This assignment took me the longest out of all of my other videos.

This video allowed for me to get started on iMovie and do things that I didn’t even know I could do.  The reason it took me the longest was because I refused to look at the tutorials on the website, or even on any YouTube sites.  I wanted to figure it all out on my own.  Eventually, I figured out how to change the settings to make the movie black and white.  Muting the audio was fairly easy as well, it just took a while to figure everything out and getting started on the video editing.   The assignment calls for the clip to be between 3-5 minutes.  I decided to do a movie trailer that was about 2:30.  For this movie, I didn’t want to choose a clip because I felt that if you hadn’t seen it, a clip wouldn’t have been enough for people to really get the concept of the movie.  I feel that having the movie be silent really makes people watch the details of the movie and actually create their own story rather than listening to what is happening.

I decided that que-cards would really take away from the clip.  Two weeks ago we had to watch a movie while it was muted, with sound only, and one with both.  I really enjoyed watching the movie without sound because it made me realize of so many little details that I was not aware off.  I wanted people to grab the same concept with this trailer so I decided to opt-out of doing them.  Although this is a silent movie, I decided to add non-lyrical music to it.  The reason to have non-lyrical music was because again, I didn’t want to take away from the clilp itself and wanted the main focus to be on that.  I thought it was only fair to use a song from the movie as the background song for my trailer.  The song is called Fate and Destiny by Patrick Doyle and it comes straight from the soundtrack.  I think the song fits perfectly on some parts more than others but it was the best choice for this.

5 Second Film (3 stars)

Mission for this assignment was to “Make a supershort, 5-second film”… basically enough time for one gag, bit, or joke. I chose this contemporary dance scene from their 2 min performance. I found their chemistry to be intriguing and if I watched this 5 second video…I know I would want to watch more.

Process: Got a scene from a contemporary dance performance, picked my favorite part, cut the scene out then uploaded it on youtube.

Video Assignment #2

For this assignment, I picked redubbing the audio.

First, pick the clip you want. I chose to do a clip from A League of Their Own. I love the scene where Tom Hanks totally goes off and talks about how “there’s no crying in baseball”.

Second, make sure this is a clip that can have the audio changed to a completely different meaning. I chose to make it about him breaking up with her, since she is crying and all. Suggestion: Remember the Titans cafeteria scene: make Denzel’s monologue about the horrible quality of cafeteria food rather than about intermingling.

I downloaded the clip from youtube using iLivid. Just put the URL into iLivid and it will do the work for you. This downloads the clip directly to your videos folder. From there, I moved the clip into Adobe Premiere. Since I had already spent a lot of time with Premiere from Assignment #1, I felt a lot better. Suggestion: Play around with Premiere before using it. It’s better to practice than really mess something up.

I named the project ‘no crying in baseball’. From the left bottom, I simply clicked and dragged my video file (freshly imported) to the main box. Once it showed up on the upper right screen, I played it to make sure it worked and got a feel for what I needed to do and then I went where it shows the video and audio tracks on a timeline and clicked the little speaker/volume control by the audio track. This muted the clip, which is what you need to do. I docked Premiere to the left of my screen using windows button and left arrow. I opened audacity and put it to the right side of my screen (windows button + right arrow). I pressed record in audacity and then pressed play for the clip in premiere. As I was watching the video, I recorded myself saying things after a breakup. The only downside is being able to play one character. After my recording was finished, I clipped out parts I didn’t need–long silences and such by using the highlight and delete method.

I exported the audio as mp3 to my desktop. I went back to Premiere and then imported the mp3. Just like with the video, I dragged it from the left bottom side over to the right bottom side where it showed up on the audio 2 track timeline thing. I played the clip to make sure it at least made somewhat sense. I trimmed the excess with the razor tool in Premiere. Then I went to file–export–media. I chose to export as MPEG4 to my desktop; I also checked the maximum render quality box. I then uploaded my clip to youtube. Here it is:

Suggestion: the shorter the clip, the easier it is to manage.

Die Young in the Hunger Games

Watching film with the stereo on

For this assignment I chose Ke$ha’s “Die Young” to go over top the cornucopia blood bath scene of the Hunger Games. I like the juxtaposition of the up beat music with the brutal and bloody scene of the movie. Also, I was able to match up the lyrics really well with the events in the clip. I used YTD Video Downloader to download the clips and convert the Hunger Games clip to an MP4 file so that I could edit it in streamclip. I then used YTD it convert them to Windows Media Files so that I could work with it in Windows Movie Maker. For the Ke$ha video I used YTD to convert it in to an MP3 and edit it in audicty. In Movie Maker I imported my edited clips and worked them until I was happy with the timing.
