Sound Effects Story

This summer, we had more crazy weather in Virginia than any other summer I can remember. Near the end of June, there was an awful storm that spawned tornadoes and hail near my house.  I made a sound effects story with what I heard in Audacity. I used freesound.org, which has marvelous sound effects ready to use. The five sounds I chose were chimes, hail, thunder, a tree falling, and rain.  I remember being petrified in the basement, hearing all these noises and not really knowing what was going on outside. It’s a scary feeling.

here’s the story:

DS106 Radio Bumper

I love the movie Bridesmaids, so naturally I wanted to pull from that for my radio bumper.  I saw my hypothetical station as a party station, so I used a line from the airplane scene. I am somewhat sure I did the radio bumper right, but I blended the sound clip with my voice adding the relevance to ds106. Since I did this assignment after I did the sound effects story, I found using audacity was so much easier. I used Audacity to record my voice, and then pulled the audio file into the sound clip, placing it at the end.

For your listening pleasure, here is my sound clip:

Audio Assignments: Radio Bumper

Creating a radio bumper for me was fun. To do this I used Audacity like I did with the 5 sound story.  First I recorded my voice saying “You’re listening to ds106 radio” in Audacity.  Then I went on Freesound and downloaded the sound called cut copy and paste that was posted by Milton.  I liked this sound because it had a kind of rock feel and was a good for a radio bumper.  Before I even read the comments below the sound there was a comment by littleheath saying “great for radio ad”.  After downloading the sound I then imported the cut copy and paste sound into another track into audacity.  After that I tried to work on adjusting the sound of my voice so it was loud enough to be over the sound of the music. I then converted the file so it would be able to be downloaded into Soundcloud.

I’ve never made a radio bumper before so any feedback would be appreciated.

DS106 Radio Bumper

Okay, so I wasn’t really sure as to what we were supposed to be doing for this assignment so I just kind of looked at some of my other classmates work and kind of got inspiration that way.  Thanks to all of the other blogs for giving me the help to make this Radio Bumper!

I went went a song that I really like called Earthquake.  If you listen to the video’s introduction, you can see where I got the inspiration to go with “DS106, come in.”  I think that it’s unique and it’s one of my favorite songs so thanks for checking it out!

Just like the Sound Story, I used Audacity to mix in my voice to the beat of Earthquake.  What I did, though, was recorded my voice in Soundhound and then downloaded the .wav file, imported it into Audacity, and then trimmed the clip down to just the introduction before the loop.  I exported the file and then re-uploaded it to Soundcloud and here it is!

5 Sound Story: Heart Attack

Okay, this assignment started off to be a pain in my ass (excuse my language) but I managed to fight through it and learn to love Audacity.  I’ve never used it before but had a BLAST making this clip.  I started out with about fifteen different types of clips from Freesound, but narrowed my selection down and found the right ones to use for my clip.  I managed to make it 1:30 and I think it sounds really really cool!  Definitely a lot of tension but check it out!

When I first opened up Audacity, I had no idea what I was doing.  I’m the type of person that doesn’t like to look up directions, so I played around with it until I was comfortable enough making my own clip.  Then the fun began.  I used Thunder on a loop, Heartbeat on a loop, a door opening, a creaking floor, and a crash for my five sound clips.  I think that I used them all appropriately and actually got wrapped up in the assignment I lost track of time.

My main goal was to create something that made you sit on the edge of your seat.  Being my first attempt at this, I believe that I most definitely succeeded.  I’m going to Tweet this out for sure and try to get people to comment on this because I’m proud of what I made.  It’s amazing what mashing a couple of audio clips can get you.  Definitely something fun and exciting to play around with.  I’ll be doing this a lot more with other clips in the near future.

If I had to choose, I would say that this was one of the best assignments that I’ve done so far this semester in this class.  It was a lot of fun to be able to mix and match different clips and create something of my own based on what I thought sounded the best in each spot.  I hope that you all enjoy the clip and comment for me please!

I was unaware that it was only supposed to be 60 seconds and instead, I made it 90 seconds.  I hope that Professor Burtis lets this one slide!  Just think of how much less intense it would be without those extra 30 seconds :-)

5 Sound Story: A Haunted House

My 5 sound story includes 5 sounds that I found on the Freesound website.  To make my 5 sound story I listened to a lot of different clips on Freesound and I decided on 5 that I liked the best and that went together like it would a story.  To make this story I downloaded the software Audacity.  I have actually used Audacity before taking this class.  I used Audacity for making recordings for band class.  I have only really done recordings on audacity so it was interesting for me to learn how to use Audacity for editing.

The first thing I did in audacity is to figure out the order of my sounds and how they connected the best.  After figuring out the order of the sounds I then cut and paste the sounds into one track one right after the other.  Now comes the real editing part, condensing the sound to fit 90 seconds or less and figuring out what should stay in the sound story and what should not.  While editing my five sound story I took out parts that I felt were too repetitive and I kept the parts that I thought flowed the best with my story.

With this sound story I was trying to build up suspense to the final sound.  My sound story starts out kind of eerie and spooky, starting to build up suspense.  This sound story is called A Haunted House.  I’ve never really been a fan of haunted houses or scary movie, but I like how they build up suspense.  In my sound story I build up suspense using 5 different sound clips that I downloaded.  I put them in a logical order of the suspense.

I found converting my audacity file to a .wav file was easy.  You just export the .aud file to the .wav file.  Afterwards I then uploaded my sound file to Soundcloud.  I also made sure to enable downloads of my Soundcloud file.

Below is my embedded 5 sound story from Soundcloud.  I tried to keep it at 90 seconds but my story is 91 seconds.  I have never made a 5 sound audio story before, and I hope you enjoy it.  Any comments or feedback would be much appreciated that will help me to improve for the next time.

The Color Fun

When my good friend Carolyn asked me if I’d do The Color Run with her back at the beginning of the year, I agreed to do it, even though I didn’t understand what it was.  I mean, it had the word run in it.  That was cool with me.

When I looked it up, I saw people dancing and throwing powdered color at each other.  Lots of people, actually.  And walkers are encouraged, it was not to be a timed run.  None of this sounded very much like ‘me’, per se.  But I like Carolyn a lot, and if she wanted to do it and wanted a buddy, I was gonna do it for her.  Grin and bear it.

When registration time rolled around, I posted a link to the information page on Facebook, and asked if anyone else wanted to do this with us to make our duo a team.  We only needed two more.

14 other people joined us.  14.  And somehow, I ended up in charge of coordinating this fiasco.  *shifty-eyes* I smell foul-play. :P

It was a disaster.  It was utter chaos.  People dropping out and wanting to sell their tickets, people wanting to find someone who wanted to sell them a ticket, people needing hotel rooms, people who turned down the hotel rooms I researched and found for all of us and then wanted them at the last minute, people who thought the traffic created by THOUSANDS of people going to the same place at the same time the morning of wouldn’t affect *them* and were shocked when it did, people who never read a single. ever-loving. word. of any kind that either I or the Color Run staff put together and sent to everybody to properly inform and prepare everyone for the event and who decided it was my sole responsibility to spend every second of my life for the entire week before the run answering their questions that they had as a result of that.

I cried a lot last week.  This run was probably the biggest reason.

But once we were all together, once we finally all found each other and began to make our way to the giant line-up (read: herding) of Color Runners, all of that melted away.  It didn’t matter anymore.  This was a group of 16 of my closest friends and family, all dressed in full nerd gear, complete with headband and nerd goggles (we were the Color Me Crazy Nerd Herd…the price they paid for putting me in charge;), ready to go be crazy, be active, and just have a wonderful time together, JUST BECAUSE it was going to be fun.

Sea of Canvases

You can’t even see the starting line up there.

But hold up.  Did I just say that I…as in ME…I was going to do something, JUST because it was fun? Not because I was obligated. Not because of some responsibility somewhere…just because it was fun.  That’s what I was there for.  What a novel concept!!  The last time I can remember doing something like that was my way-too-short honeymoon…a little over 2 years ago (I think…is that right, honey?).

And it was wonderful.  It was beautiful.  It was even rejuvenating.

And the best part about it wasn’t even the color being thrown everywhere.  That was just the inspiration for the awesome.  The best part, really, was just the overwhelmingly large group of people, all together for that one reason – to have pure, unadulterated, clean-but-dirty fun.  Everybody was there for that same reason.  We were all on the same level playing field.  Every random person I bumped into had a smile on their face.  Everybody dressed as crazy as they could imagine.  Nobody judged anybody.  Even I danced, several times, through several Color Zones and in the end at the final party.  Because it didn’t matter at all.  Nothing did.

Well, okay, maybe right before we left, it started to matter that we find food SOON, cuz we was some hungray fools after that, but you get the idea.

This was the feeling that overwhelmed me at the beginning of the race, as we were waiting our turn to start (we were in the last wave of people to start, due to my awesome organization and leadership skills), when I posted on Twitter that I wished I had thought to submit an assignment for ds106.

And ever since then, I’ve wanted to make a blog post about the run, and wished I’d been able to submit this assignment idea.  Then, tonight, I saw this conversation.

Holy goodness.  Well, fine then.  If it’s an assignment you want, cogdog, then an assignment you shall have.  Because #Section01kicksSection01sbutt ;)

We learned a lot about the Color Run event itself this year.  We learned that the shirts they give you don’t catch the color as well as plain cotton t-shirts, for starters.  We learned how to get the best pictures with the most color…by reviewing our pictures after the fact.

So in my opinion, our pictures aren’t the very best at showing the amount of color that was there that day.  But I have cautiously avoided my Color Run tattoo on my hand ever since the run, and I’m trying to preserve it as long as possible, and I hold our pictures very near and dear to my heart.  Because reflecting on this run reminds me of what matters in this life, and reminds me of what it feels like to be truly happy, and how to enjoy life on a very basic level with those around you, no matter who it is, and no matter what differences or annoyances you may have shared in times passed.

So, here’s my photo with the absolute most amount of color I was possibly able to squeeze into a photo myself.  I will do better next time, and I encourage you to do better in the meantime as well.  (FYI, I think the Richmond Color Run this Saturday is still open…if you’re interested and able;)  But even if not at a Color Run event, I challenge you to find a beautiful, joy-filled opportunity to fill your camera lens with as much color as humanly possible, and then to share it with me and the others here.  Because for me, from now on, color will forever be my reminder to slow down and smile and appreciate life.  And my hope through sharing this assignment is to pass that sentiment on to you. :)

What Tom Hanks Thinks About Me Making GIFs

I need to laugh like this more often.

This assignment sucked.  It made me cry.  Many many times.  Actually, it just made me cry again, as I just finished typing it up, and when I clicked save, it deleted all of my writing, saving only the GIF.

What would I like to do?  I’d like to cry, and scream, and throw my laptop across the room. All week long I’ve grapped with this project, just to have it go buggy on me time and time again in tons of weird ways just like this.  But you know what?  I’d rather not cry.

I’d rather laugh, just like my good friend Tom Hanks here.  It really doesn’t matter what goes wrong, I may get mad at it, and I may cry a bit, but in the end, I’m going to laugh at it.  Because what the heck good is it gonna do to cry, anyway?

I used about every resource known to man to look into how to do this project.  I even asked my friends on Facebook, checked it on ehow, and read tutorials on gimp.org.  Of course, in the end, I followed the advice in the handbook at ds106.  And here’s the end result.

But the most valuable lesson of the week?  Computers still hate me.  But that’s alright.  I’ll deal.  And I’ll remind them whose fingers have the ability to hit the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys.  Just sayin.
