ROB, WHY WON’T THIS PRINT?!

Me: Well, Mom, it is saying the print spooler is offline.
Mom: What the hell does that mean? You know I don’t use computers like you, your brother and your Father! I just want to print!
Me: Well you have to turn the print spooler on.
Mom: …And how do I do that?
Me: Here, let me show you.
Mom: Write down the steps so I can do it when you go away to school!
Me: Alright.

….Yet, somehow, that piece of paper has gone missing and I STILL get asked to help fix the computer! Well, I have my final solution…A video to show her how to fix the spooler so she can print! It will forever be on the internet and my YouTube, but I was also sure to send her a copy as well!(Since I know she will never go ON YouTube lol)

So this video assignment is called Make a Tutorial for you Mom. So minus the ‘you’ not being ‘your’, it is pretty self-explanatory! Right…? So to begin, I had NO idea how to record a screen capture so that I could share my screen with video. (TGFG – Thank Goodness For Google) I stumbled onto this gem called Camtasia. It is a video editing software that will also let you record your screen for sharing! It is not free, but I did get a free 30-day trial which was more than enough! Recording my screen was the easy part. But that is okay, because TechSmith(creators of Camtasia) have a lot of tutorial video to help with editing. So of course I took advantage of learning how to zoom to specific parts of the screen, creating title and credits, and eventually placing my audio. I did NOT find this program as user-friendly as Windows Movie Maker, but I forged through. I again recorded my audio in Audacity, exported it as MP3 and opened it into Camtasia.

So, Mom, are you ready for the last tutorial on how to fix the print spooler? Good.

Elf in Black and White

Silent Era

This assignment was to take a modern movie clip and revert it to an old silent film.

Once again, the outcome of my christmas mood. What funnier movie for being in the Christmas spirit then ELF! My roommate and I had just watched this movie several days before, so that’s probably why it came to mind. Elf is a funny movie just for the silliness that  characterizes Buddy.  There were not very many clips available online for this movie. So, it narrowed down what I could us.  I searched through youtube and found a scene from elf that would still seem to have a plot without sound.

I choose the scene where Buddy, the elf, meets his dad for the first time. He has just come from the North Pole where he discovered he was not an elf but a human. And now he is in New York to meet his real dad. But…he’s dad has no idea he had buddy. So, as buddy walks into he’s fathers office dressed as an Elf everyone is confused. They think buddy has dressed and been sent as a “Christmas Gram” to sing for the office.

After finding it on Youtube, i used PwnYouTube to download the clip as an MP4.

Then, I opened the scene in Imovie where i could edit it. First, i fiddled around to find out how to convert the film into black and white. Once in black and white I then had to create cues.  I saved a background used by professor Alan on his blog . Then, I opened this photo in Gimp. I then made a powerpoint with the words i wanted to put in my cue. After saving the powerpoint as a picture, I opened it as a layer on top of my background photo.

I did this process several times and then inserted the photos into the film.

After the motion part was complete, I canceled out the normal sound on the film. Then, I added a song from my itunes.

Walahh!! Elf as a classic, silent, black and white,  old school film

Play by Play

The goal of this assignment was to give a short play by play of an everyday activity.  Well as most of you know by now, I love football and I love the redskins so I knew I wanted to do a play by play of the skins game.  Unfortunately, they were on by last week so I had to wait until this Sunday to do the assignment.  My roommate is a Giants fan so we always mess with eachother during the games, but we killed the Eagles this week so it was a great game to watch.  I often do some joke play by play during games so this was not anything different than usual for me.  I think I’m a regular Al Michaels, what do you think?  Don’t be surprised if you see me in the Super Bowl booth in February. 31-6 baby

Character/Genre Mashup

As soon as I saw this assignment, I knew I had to do it! It looked like something I would really enjoy doing and I was really surprised to see that 0 people had completed the assignment yet! So I thought, why not? I looked at Alan’s video and really liked how he put all kinds of clips from TV and movies from all different sorts of genres and combined them all together with a piece of music overtop.

At first I saw the suggestion “beaches” as another example you could try but I wanted to do something different (definitely NOT anything soccer) this time. So I decided on romance. But I wasn’t sure what song I wanted to use. Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” came to mind. But I thought that would be a little too intense for this assignment so I searched “popular love songs” on Google and this was the first site that came up! It was Top 100 Wedding Songs and I browsed through these and saw “My Boo” by Usher & Alicia Keys. I knew right then that this would be PERFECT! This is one of my all-time favorite songs and I love jamming out to it!

So to begin, I just started brainstorming really famous movie and TV couples. One of the first I thought of was Barney and Robin from the TV show How I Met Your Mother. This is one of my favorite TV shows currently and their love story is really cool so I wanted to definitely use them. Next, I thought of Noah and Allie from The Notebook, because, obviously, most people have seen this movie and it’s definitely a great love story (so I used two different clips with this one). From that point on, I just started writing down as many movie and television couples I could think of. I Googled “famous movie couples” and “famous TV couples” and got some inspiration there. I also asked a few friends to name a few off the top of their head and came up with a few great ideas.

To get the clips, I would search YouTube for whatever particular scene I was looking for. I found that I got the best results whenever I typed in the movie/TV show, then the names of the people in the couple, then romantic scenes or whatever YouTube automatically came up with. For example, I searched “Glee Rachel and Finn Romantic Scenes” to get a clip of these two singers. When I found the video that contained the scene I wanted to use, I clicked the Pwn YouTube button and clicked MP4 to save the file onto my computer. Next, I opened MPEG StreamClip and uploaded that file. I used the Select In and Select Out features of this program to cut the specific scene I wanted from the video. Then I clicked Trim to just isolate that scene and then saved it.

Next, I uploaded that file onto Windows Movie Maker and played the scene through to make sure it started and ended exactly where I wanted it to. I did this for each scene until I had enough scenes to cover the length (3:36) of the song. Once I had all of the scenes that I wanted, I played around with the order of the scenes so that there was a mix of TV and movie scenes and it wasn’t just straight movie or straight TV scenes back to back.

I really wanted to focus on using TV shows from when I was younger, or couples that really stood out to me that I really liked. For instance, I was OBSESSED with Boy Meets World when I was younger so a scene with Cory and Topanga was an obvious choice for me. I loved the show Lizzie McGuire too because I always felt like I could relate to her life when I was in middle school. So her and her best friend Gordo were a “duhh” choice as well! Every day before school in 5th grade I would watch Saved By the Bell. I loved the show! The clothes were crazy and the characters were all so funny! So that’s why I chose a scene with Zach and Kelly. Many more examples of these can be seen in the video, explaining each one would take too long!

I also chose some more classic movies and scenes although I don’t know some of these movies or shows particularly well. For example, I used stuff from Gone With the Wind, I Love Lucy, and the romance between a vampire and a vampire slayer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Other such classics I know better are Jack and Rose from Titanic (love Leo DiCap), Cinderella and her prince (my mom made me a Cinderella costume one Halloween and I loved it so much), and Sandy and Danny from Grease (a proud owner of this DVD). And many others included.

This process took forever because it took a lot of time to try and find the scenes I was looking for and looking through video after video until I found good ones. So now I really understand why nobody (I now see that there is one person who has completed it) has completed this assignment. It took me several days to find everything I wanted. But once I had assembled everything and put all of the pieces together, I think I have a really nice project. Enjoy the romance everyone!

Inside the Animal Mind

My first video assignment for this week was the What Do Pets Think About? The assignment asked for us to create a video where the animal looks like it’s thinking, then narrate what they were thinking. I threw a little spin on this. I decided to narrate what my girlfriend’s dog was thinking, but I did it while I was playing with him. My girlfriend SWEARS that he is a smart dog…but I beg to differ. I think he’s gotten goofy with old age(and may be a little slow). So although I pick on him, he is a sweet dog…and perfect for my narration of what he was thinking about!

I chose to do this video because I thought it would be a good way to ease into video editing. The programs I used were Windows Movie Maker(WMM) and Audacity. I also had to borrow my girlfriend’s video camera…and her dog…and her house…WOW, am I a mooch? I guess it’s a fair tradeoff because she loves reading my blog and seeing what I create :) Anyways, I took a couple videos of her dog, Moe, doing random things. I then uploaded the video to my computer and opened them right into WMM. In WMM I began by editing the video volume and turned it all the way down so I could do my voiceovers. I don’t know if it was possible to record audio in WMM, but I knew Audacity could, so I went with what I knew best. I recorded my audio in Audacity, and made sure it went along with the video. Exported my audio as an MP3 and then clicked the add song feature in WMM. BAM, my insight on what Moe is thinking! I also found that it was fairly simple to create title slides and credit slides with WMM.

Pretty Little Liars Supercut! 5 stars

Total of 16 stars.

Creating stories with video is a lot easier than audio or visual ways. With video, you get both audio and visual in one. For instance, it is much easier to prove my point with the PLL super cut that they scream and are overdramatic by showing the clips themselves rather than describing it or taking a screen shot of Spencer’s face while she screams. I leanred a lot about iMovie. Maybe its because I have an older version, but it is not as “out of the box” as Apple likes to suggest. There is a slight learning curve to it and I feel like Windows Media Player is slightly easier to learn.

Overall, even though this week was time consuming, I felt like what I learned was worth it. I fee like I know how to work my computer better and I know how to tell a story a lot better with video now.

One Archetype, Five Movies, Five Seconds

The goal of this assignment was to pick a theme, and find 5 movie scenes that go with it.  I know it was only supposed to 5 seconds, but I it was really hard to get the point of each video with just 1 second clips.  The movies I chose, in order, are “The Dark Night Rises”, “The Princess Bride”, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, “Army of Darkness”, and “A  Knights Tale”.  The scene from Dark Night Rises is kind of a typical Batman scene, him standing on top of a high building overlooking the city as its protector.  I just thought it was a cool scene to start off the montage.  The second is Inigo Montoya’s classic line from Princess Bride.  I think that just about everyone knows this line and it was the first scene I thought of when I looked at the assignment.  The third scene is the very popular “Its just a flesh wound” from Monty Python.  I thought it was a perfect scene to follow Inigo Montoya’s death threat, plus its just funny.  The fourth scene was from Army of Darkness.  Ashe used his shotgun to break the Prince’s sword and all the citizens of the castle are in shock of its power.  I’ve always thought it was hysterical.  The final scene was from A Knights Tale.  Although the part I chose was not Heath Ledger himself, I thought it was absolutely perfect to follow the boom stick line.  The biggest problem I had with this assignment was just formatting everything correctly, I’m still having trouble with scaling the clips themselves.  I enjoyed this assignment because it really made me want to watch these movies over again

Lip Sync!

This was one of my favorite assignments all year.  I am one of those people that always sings in the car to songs, even if I don’t know them that well.  When I’m by myself I generally do it like this, because I think its really funny.  I also love to irritate my friends with my singing.  I chose the song “Honey Bee” by Blake Shelton because that is my girlfriend’s and my song.  I hope she likes my version of it!  Feel free to sign me to a record deal, I’m still deciding which company I want

Range of Emotions

This one was really fun.  It made me think of that mime act where he is smiling and moves his hand in front of his face then he’s frowning.  I just thought it was fun to be really dramatic with my emotions.  I hope you guys like my no shave November beard

Watching a movie with the Stereo on…

The next Video Assignment that I decided to do was the “watching a movie with the stereo on” assignment in which you take a movie clip and replace the sound with a song by choice.

I chose this assignment because I realized that this scenario actually occurs a lot in my life. Being a college student and watching a movie in your room with three other roommates can really be difficult when one or more of them isn’t watching the movie and choses to play music in their room instead. I then realized that there are a lot of times where the song they are playing kind of correlate with the movie I may be watching… So, for this assignment I decided to use a scene from the movie “Up” because I recently watched it and it’s one of my favorite movies. As I was thinking about this assignment this particular movie quickly came to mind. I simply downloaded the movie scene onto my computer then   imported it into my iMovie and began to think of a song that I thought could fit the movie well. After a little while of thinking I came up with the song “Just to see you smile” by Tim McGraw, which is also one of my favorite country songs. I figured out that the scene and the song correlate well together because in the beginning of the song and the movie it represents happy times and as they both progress things begin to fall apart. I didn’t realize how well these two worked together until I listened to the song over the clip in my iMovie and realized that the song basically represents this scene completely. The song fits the events in this particular clip just as if it was made for this movie. Since I already found a scene that did a lot of the work… I simply shortened it and cut out a portion of it, but I didn’t really change the scene completely, there was no need for this particular assignment. I found that this is a story because the music tells the life and love of Carl and Ellie in the movie through the scene choice…. The movie scene shows a huge portion of the movie “Up” and by adding the song you get a glimpse of what the movie is about as well, except without the actual words from the movie involved. I asked one of my friends that I know also loves this movie to check out my work and she thought it was PERFECT. She said the song basically represented the relationship of Carl and Ellie to a T. I felt really proud of my work after she said that… I hope others that have seen the movie feel the same way too. Here’s the video:
