Video Assignment – Make a Tutorial for Your Mom

This assignment was to create a video tutorial for your mom (or anyone really) who doesn’t know how to do something on the computer.  I got a new Apple in September, and my mom helped me pay for it in exchange for my old mac, which is great because she loves it!  It’s also great because my old mac would have died due to this class.  Anyways, I have been trying to get my mom to video chat with me, but she doesn’t know how to set up a Skype account, and I never remember when I go visit her.  This assignment is the perfect opportunity to send her a step-by-step tutorial on how to do so.  I will keep you updated if she tries it, and hopefully she will!

* for best results, make the video full screen, if it is difficult to see!

This took a lot longer than I thought it would, as I had to redo it a few times.  I reinstalled Skype over 3 times, and created at least 3 new Skype accounts.  Having a list or outline of what I needed to do was very helpful.  I found it was easiest after running through all the steps a few time before recording, to know what to expect.  Having a screen typed up with all of my personal information also made it go faster (one of my earlier tries was almost 10 mins long! TOO LONG!).  I realize this one is also a little long, at almost 7 minutes, and I was surprised how long it actually took (I think I imagined it taking no more than 3 minutes).  I will definitely do more of these just for fun/to show my family how to do stuff, or for future tutorial assignments in this class.

Assignment worth 5 stars.

Chopsticks (product review)

This is a video my team and I made for a FMA class and I thought it fit perfect for a DS106 assignment. The assignment I tagged it to is titled “Product Review” Although it doesnt fully meet the assignments requirements it still gives a comedy style feel for chopsticks, and infomercials. It displays testimonials and it was fun being apart of this shoot.

To start off my team and I got together and discussed what kind of product we wanted to do, originally I thought “chopsticks?? No way!!” But once you get a bunch of people together for a project, thats when the creativity comes out and magic can happen. This video has many mistakes as far as quality and white balance, but we were all beginners in that course so not bad for some newbies. We wrote our storyboard, and watched other infomercials to kind of get a better idea of how we wanted to display our great product. We discussed things like, what makes our product better, or how can we really make this funny at the same time. The editing was very tedious, we had to get every second right when we added the pasmo and suica cards and also the extra, stuff people would get if they would buy our product. Very fun project!
