Movie Trailer Mashup – Bring It On meets Chicken Run

Here’s the assignment:

Take your favorite movie trailer and mash it up with a different trailer to completely change the meaning of the original trailer. For example, if you have a funny movie trailer, give it the sound of a terrifying movie; or vice versa. You may need to clip the audio or the visual, use imovie and audacity to cut the clips to give you what you need. Good luck!

This was a lot of fun!  Although picking out movies that would work was a little bit tricky.  I actually spent way too long doing that…   As you can see, I used Bring it On and Chicken Run.  I do like both of these movies, although I can’t say that either of them are my favorite.  I also don’t think that I totally changed the meaning of Bring it On, but I do think that I sort of made fun of it.  I used iMovie to clip some scenes from the trailer, because it was very long.   I also added the Universal Studio’s sound in the beginning (which I got from here), because there was a huge awkward silence.  I found that there were so many times that the audio from the Chicken Run trailer were matching up so well with what characters from Bring it On were doing.  Both were comedies, but I think that adding the Chicken Run audio made it into a parody of Bring it On, as it suggests that the cheerleaders are chickens.  There was so much arm flapping, that it looked like they were doing the chicken dance, so it worked out a few times.

Something else I found challenging was clipping parts of the video out, and replacing it with other parts of the trailer.  I realized that in iMovie I could see how many seconds something was when I highlighted it, and that made it a lot easier when replacing it with different video clips.  I also used the “clip trimmer” for the first time, for the audio.  That was also helpful, especially when I added the sound affects at the very beginning.  If I didn’t use the clip trimmer on the Universal Studio’s sound clip, there would have been a lot of overlap with that and the Chicken Run audio, and that would have been so messy.  I also “faded out” the Universal Studios sound clip, so that it would be a slightly smoother transition to the Chicken Run audio.

After watching the mashup, watching the Bring it On trailer sounds weird.

The New Games

( 4 star)I had a lot of fun with this assignment. I had recently watched the movie The Hunger Games and loved it. Based on the descriptions in the book and their appearence in the movie, the “Capital” citizens and peace keeps (the police force) looked like aliens compared to the others. This gave me the idea of somehow incorporating an alien themed movie. Then I thought of Transformers and decided to take the trailer from the 3rd movie. With this trailer, I tried to give it the effect that the “capital” citizens were aliens enslaving and toying with humans.

To make this mash up, I used the video from The Hunger Games and the audio from Transformers 3. I uploaded the audio file onto Windows Live Movie Maker and took away the audio initially.  Then I uploaded the audio track and tried to fit it the best I could. From there I went into the editing process. It did not require much, only some minor increasing and decreasing of the video audio. I tried my best to match up all the speaking parts. However, there were a few moments where their was talking in the video, but not the audio. In order to make it flow well, I decided to just let the normal audio in on 1 occasion. I did this by segmenting the section and making that video segment louder. The rest of the talking seemed to fit in well.

movie scenes

For this assignment, finding scenes from movies that changed my life was a little hard to do. I was limited to a selection of movies already on my computer (luckily, a lot of those are some of my favorite movies anyway). I also think that anything can impact your life simply by being in your life at one point.

I chose clips from the movies Happythankyoumoreplease, He’s Just Not That Into You, and The Social Network. Happythankyoumoreplease is one of those feel good, coming of age movies with a positive message, and I’m a sucker for feel good, coming of age movies with positive messages. He’s Just Not That Into You is more of a romcom, but like I said in the video, it’s sort of my Bible. It simplifies the whole does-he-like-me waiting game.

The Social Network needs its own paragraph. This movie took over my entire life. I don’t know how or why but it did. I even remember the day I first watched it. Is that weird? It was January 26, 2011. After that, the rest is history. I ended up seeing Jesse Eisenberg’s play in New York City twice. Outwardly, I suppose it didn’t seem very life-changing seeing this movie, but it felt like it. Also, I can’t even get over how perfect the entire movie is. More on that later…

one second video

How much of a story can you tell in a 1 second video? Inspired by this.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I created this video because I think it’s beautiful, in that it is a mixture of my grandmother and technology.  It’s something that doesn’t happen very often.  I also think that it’s funny, because she is raising the roof.  She can get down.

Realistically, this assignment is very cool.  I loved the examples, as each demonstrates that so much beauty can happen in a second.  I would do this assignment again, and definitely do a compilation.

I added music to the background of this (taken from a list of suggestions from youtube).  This is the story I am trying to tell.

30 sec processes

this is a video assignment that tasks the video recording of a 30 second process.

there really aren’t that many cool things I could think of that are just 30 seconds and when reading the posts for this assignments i saw just about everyone said the same thing.  This is my girlfriend scrap booking and I asked her what that thing you saw in the video was.  For those that don’t scrap book lol (she incredibly cool so no judging lol) its a embroider for paper.  it creates cool designs, i guess it works just like a press with the template and two plates.  but yup, thats my 30 second process….thats closer to a minute already or I would have showed how you can use the paper to frame things.  lol stay tuned ill blog about that next :)   enjoy!

Video Essay – One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

I chose One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest for my video analysis.  iMovie was a great tool for taking clips that I had taken from youtube.  The assignment: you need to select several scenes from your favorite film (or one of your favorites), and edit them together and comment on some of the filmic elements of the scenes? Why do you like these scenes? What strikes you about them? What makes them good cinema? Is there a subtext at work in this film? In short, construct an essayistic commentary on the scenes as a narrator explaining to your audience what you find important about the scene, and why. What’s more, what do the details you have pinpointed say about the film more generally.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest is one of my favorite movies.  Editing the scenes together was pretty easy thanks to iMovie (as I mentioned before…).  I was also glad to find that it was easier to download the clips from youtube than I had expected.  I used the microphone tool to add in commentary over the film.  Realizing that I could control the volume of my comments as well as the film clips themselves was very handy.  I also liked that I could use different transitions between clips, so that it didn’t look too choppy.  One of the most difficult things I thought was cutting all the clips I wanted to show down to 5 minutes or less.  I think that choosing perfect sections of the film, that illustrate why the film is so great was apart of the challenge of the assignment.  I also found that it was a lot easier when I wrote a script, and stuck with it.  I tried to improv with bullets at first, and it was very unorganized, and I took up more time because of awkward pauses.   In the end, here’s what I got:

Serenity Now!

This is a video assignments where you take several nature clips and put them to peaceful music to create a pleasing background nature still life music video.  I chose to make mine a little more awesome then that and decided to make a chronicle of my kayak trip in three still shot videos.  Its pretty awesome, you should actually watch it/ put it on in the background while you do stuff.  music was taken from youtube and the video was edited in mpeg stream clip audio was edited in audacity and then placed in iTunes, the movie was pieced together and looped in iMovie. enjoy!

Video Assignment #2: Redub the Audio

DAMN THIS WAS DIFFICULT.

The assignment was to: Take a classic movie (or heck any movie you like), and rescript the audio of a key scene. You will want to re-write the lines to change the meaning or intent of the scene, delete the original audio, and record your own (this can be done many ways, voiceover in iMovie, recording the audio and editing the track in any other movie editor). For my example, I took Howard Beale’s on camera rampage from “Network”, and changed it to a diatribe on being bored in school.

I like The Notebook, and decided to use this scene because I feel like without the audio it’s hard to tell what’s going on exactly, leading up to the kiss at the end of the scene.  It looked like they were engaging in some passionate argument that could be  interpreted differently to different people when no sound was present.  I wanted it to be dramatic, making Ryan Gosling sort of a playboy, as I feel like I see him all over the media (not that I mind…), with “the best butt” or “recently being single.”  There were even sites making a petition saying that he should have been the sexiest man of the year, and  multiple websites dedicated to “hey girl.”  (check it out… & pardon the language on that website).   His presence in the media was sort of inspirational for this project.

Last week, for the preproduction assignments, I made a recording on GarageBand for this, but didn’t end up using it.  This is because I needed to get a guy to record the guy’s voice, and I found that it was easier to just record over the clip in iMovie, using the microphone tool.  I learned the hard way that I needed to put the background sound in first, and then click and drag the speaking files (I saved them all separately on my desktop, or recorded directly to iMovie) onto the video clip (it kind of looked like a voice bubble) so that they would sort of overlap better.  I got the background rain from freesound.org.

I had to redo this project a few times because it was a huge mess.  I am still not happy with the audio quality – it doesn’t sound like it’s in the film, and if I have a chance before Sunday night I will try and mess around with that some more.  I am fairly happy with how the words sort of matched up with the clip, but this too could have gone more smoothly.

Flipper

*For some reason the embedding link made the video very large and it gets cut off. To view the video, please click the video to go to the youtube location. Or click here.*

For my first video assignment, I decided to relive an old classic – Flipper. I havent seen this movie in years, but I remember liking it. I was able to find some interesting clips online, so I decided to remake the opening credits.

I had a lot of fun working with this assignment, although  I found it very tedious. Putting in the  credits took forever, while the actual video editing (importing, cutting, animations, etc) did not take very long to do.

Tutorial:

To make this video I used Windows Live Movie Maker, which made it rather simple.

1st) Find some nice video clips that you think you can use. Its better to have an idea of what you want to do, rather than doing it on the fly (In my opinion at least)

2) Import the video clip by simply dragging and dropping it into the program.

* From here you can go many different ways, but I will just go into detail about what I did*

3) I first played my video clip to look for any specific moments where the text I will be putting in would stand out the best. I also cut any unwanted segments by sliding the cursor to the beginning of the unwanted segment, hit split (Edit, Split), then again at the end of the segment. Click the segment and delete it. From here you can piece together other segments and add animations and transitions to make it smoother.

4) To add text, go to Home, Add Caption (next to Snapshot) and adjust it accordingly.
