Return to the Silent Era: Pre-Production

One of the Video Assignments that I would love to try my hand at is the Return to the Silent Era assignment. My plan for this is to take the Ultimate Trilogy trailer for Batman: The Dark Knight Rises and turn it Silent style. I think this will be absolutely so cool!

I found an awesome Silent Film Score named Villainous Treachery from Royalty Free Music that I want to use and think would go great as the music for this clip. It is Dark, Intense, everything that fits with the Dark Knight Rises, so it should work out well.

For the Text Cards I am using this layout, and will probably try to find a way to put it into iMovie as the theme, and enter text that way, or use GIMP to do it.

I looked at a few examples of this assignment and definitely liked what I saw. The first one was done by Brittany Parsons, and here is her Finding Neemo in Silence project , which is really awesome. She actually sped up the trailer and the music really reflected this fast motion. It worked really well for the project; another interesting thing that she did was overlay the text onto the trailer, which is something I wouldn’t have thought of doing, but I certainly like the idea.
The next example I checked out was Ben Rimes’s fantastic transformation of the train chase scene at the end of Back to the Future 3 which can be found here . Ben used many of the effects that I would strive to use to make my movie really aesthetically antiquated and believable. I really have to give it to him though, even though he calls his efforts “sophomoric“, I thoroughly enjoyed his Return to the Silent Era assignment. He illustrated his techniques in a tutorial that is incredibly detailed, and I will thank him very much for it. He also really talked about a past experience in a 5th grade class that I found humorous and which was easy to connect with. So I encourage everyone to go check his example out!

I consulted this man’s helpful tutorial on how to convert a video to Black and White in iMovie, which seems to be pretty simple…

Overall, I think that this will be a fun assignment to do, and I hope to Wow you all and add in elements that you did not see coming! You will see more soon, I promise!!

I really wanted to do this assignment since it looked really fun and creative. it was time consuming trying to find the pictures that and I had to look for a lot of them. I also enjoy the song because its’s tender and sweet comparing to everything else that artist release . so Lil Wayne here is describing how much he loves a women and I think it’s sweet. I used I movie yet again this time it was difficult setting it up and timing the pictures with the words but pleases when I accomplished the task. this assignment Value: Two Stars/ 2**

INTO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!!

so this is for the final project and i decided to do alittle bit of audio and video at the same time. first i did was create my own little dubstep song. i used audacity for all of this part and grabbed over hundred different audio clips at first on the internet and worked my way down to about 20-25 audio files for the final song i then used audacity to make my song and i included audio transitions, chorus, beat down mix, etc to create my song. i then exported it as a mp3 file and imported it onto imovie. for the video portion i grabbed several different videos from youtube and edited them together (used transitional effects to go between different videos to give it a better look and feel to it) i then did the necessary little tweaking to both audio and video and uploaded it to youtube

This has been by far my favorite thing that i have done in this class. in class i learned about both audio and video programs and wasnt really able to apply both to one thing or project that i have done until now and it was alot of hard work trying to match up the video with the audio but was able (after a long while) to get everything matched up and looking good. im really proud of this project so i hope you enjoy

Movie Scenes that Changed our Lives

For this assignment, select scenes from 3-5 movies. These scenes should represent scenes that changed your life or made some sort of dramatic, traumatic, lasting, or emotional impact on you. When you have selected those scenes, create a video that shows the scenes and includes audio/video of you describing what it is about the scene that made a significant impact on you, what you are fond of about the scenes, what scares you, what you remember thinking when you were a child, etc. Feel free to be liberal in your interpretation of the instructions. Keep in mind, however, that the primary point is to recall 3-5 movie scenes that have made a lasting impact on you (whatever the reason for that impact may be.) When you are finished, upload the video to your blog, and, If you are inspired, expand on the reasons why you connect with the specific scenes in your video. Check out an example here: http://blog.rossannamarie.me/movie-scenes/

This is a bad copy but I could not a find any better one. Love and Other Drugs was a very good movie based on a Maggie Murdock(Anne Hathaway) as a Parkinson patient and Jamie Randall(Jake Gyllenhaal as a drug representative. Star Value:5*****

Watching Movies With the Stereo On\

Like when you have a movie playing on TV without the sound and you’ve got the stereo on at the same time. Take a clip from a movie, remove the audio, and add audio from a song or radio show that, somehow, kind of fits.

well for this assignment I did Think Like a Man, although i have not seen it yet, it seems very entertaining and i feel that Kanye West song runaway fits this movie well, it was the first that came to mind when i watch the preview because how mean and disrespectful guys acted in the movie. Kanye defenitly comments on how Jerk off and douchebag. I did this project on I movie i am getting better at this. At first I had to download and import the clips to the program then I dragged the music from itunes and was successful one part that I had trouble with was matching the part of the song to movie. because I put them one on top of the other the music was parallel to the clip so I had to drag it under neath the clip so I can edit and cut the song to where I wanted it. Enjoy. Star value: 3 ***

Video Assignment – “Movie Scenes that Changed Our Lives”

This assignment required a lot of thought, and I liked it.  We were to “select scenes from 3-5 movies. These scenes should represent scenes that changed your life or made some sort of dramatic, traumatic, lasting, or emotional impact on you. When you have selected those scenes, create a video that shows the scenes and includes audio/video of you describing what it is about the scene that made a significant impact on you, what you are fond of about the scenes, what scares you, what you remember thinking when you were a child, etc.”

The three movie movies that I chose my clips, are also a few of my favorite movies:

- The Truman Show (1998)

- Pleasantville (1998)

- The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

* A WARNING:  the last few moments of this clip contain graphic material (i.e. blood).  Viewer discretion is advised.

The Truman Show changed my life in that it made me very paranoid for a very long time.  I used to think that there was a pretty good chance that someone was always watching me.  It was kind of embarrassing, but I know that it made me alter some of my behaviors (I can’t remember what I was doing at 8 years old… maybe picking my nose or something).  I felt like I could relate a lot to Truman (the protagonist), because he was afraid of going out onto the water on boats.  I was afraid of this when I was little, because of this one time I was in a boat on a lake that tipped over.  It wasn’t that big of a deal because we were right next to the dock, and the water was not super deep, but I was fairly young (around 5, I believe), but I remember being afraid to go on the boat after this happened.  In hindsight, as a teenager and watching this movie, I related to it differently.  I thought that it was wild and wrong to do this to a person, as it takes so much of a person’s life away.  I felt sad for Truman, and wondered how he would survive not living in his bubble, and knowing that millions of people had watched his every move his entire life.  This final clip, with him finally getting his life back, made me feel incredibly happy.

Pleasantville is a movie like a painting.  The black and white with just a few things of color seemed almost magical.  I remember spending so much time wondering how they accomplished this effect.  This scene, where David (Tobey Maguire), was putting makeup on the mother was also fascinating, as I didn’t understand how they got the makeup to do that.  The context of this scene was also important, because it shows how sad it would be to feel pressured to completely fit into the expectations that our culture and society place on us… and then I remember that plenty of people experience that today.  The liberation that color symbolizes in this film just made sense to me as a child.  My mom is an artist, and to see art serving as a symbol of expression and breaking away from the rules made me feel so glad, and made me feel like my mother was a genius (to see what she preached exemplified on something I saw on TV).  I loved that art was so powerful, and how self-conscious the mother was of showing her color.  This scene made me realize that it is important for your wellbeing to embrace things that make you happy and make you feel alive.

The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favorite movies in the whole world.  In high school, one of my best friends and I would watch this movie any night we were bored and didn’t know what to do, because there were so many details, it was so entertaining, and because the way it was filmed is very aesthetically pleasing.  This scene is intense.  The song is intense.   Together, you get a very captivating scene that is itself a piece of art.  The fact that this was a suicide scene was itself something that makes it stick with you. It was filmed beautifully, with different shots worked into the clip (Margot, Mordecai, the razor blade..) made it so mesmerizing and dramatic.  I can’t help but feel overwhelmed with emotion anytime I hear the song “Needle in the Hay” by Elliot Smith, because of this scene.  It was the first time I watched a movie and felt that emotionally overcome, and I think partially had to do with how perfect the audio and the video fit in with each other.

Flubetheus: Rise of the Flub

When I went to the movies a while ago to see the Hunger Games (awesome btw) I saw the trailer for Prometheus for the hundredth time. It was during this particular viewing that I noticed a little green thing in the corner of one of the shots and remarked to one of my friends how it looked like flubber. This set off the spark for my movie mashup assignment.

I took most of the trailer for prometheus and inserted clips from Flubber whenever they had shots of aliens or chaos. It was simple conceptually but much harder to do once I got the project into iMovie. I wanted to keep the cuts in sync with the dramatic soundtrack and that was hard since I had edited stuff at the end first. I ended up having to detach the audio fro prometheus and shorten it a little bit just to have everything match up. Thus, the flubber music at the end.

Movie Trailer Mashup

Movie Trailer Mashup is a video assignment that involves incorporating clips from a different movie into the trailer of another movie to change the meaning or tone of the original. After some long thought I decided to do a sports themed movie. I always enjoyed watching to football film The Replacements and decided to look up the movie trailer. When I was watching it I began to think of how I could replace some of the football scenes in the trailer with something funnier. Then I remembered another football movie I used to watch as a kid, The Little Giants. So sure enough, I cut scenes from the movie about pee-wee football, and inserted them into a trailer about professional football. It actually ended up working out nicely because their uniforms are actually similar. So it kind of looks like scenes from The Replacements, just on a smaller scale:

To make this movie I used Windows Movie Maker 2.6. This is quickly becoming my favorite movie editor, as it makes cutting film clips extremely easy. The hardest part about this assignment was how to incorporate the action from The Little Giants to reflect the narrative of the movie trailer.
