Things are’t what they use to be. For this assignment pick a product, a piece of technology works best but you can use anything, and create a short video timeline of how it looked way back all the way to how it looks today. Be sure to add dates.
I decided to pick telephones as my product. The reason I chose telephones is because everyone is familiar with what they look like today, but many may not know what they looked like as they were transitioning. There are some pretty goofy looking phones from back in the day that you can see here in my video. I used Windows Movie Maker for this one. I found my pictures on the internet and made a slideshow timeline of them. I added the song “Changes”, by David Bowie.
Find a theme from TV and/or movies (e.g. mosnters, cowboys, romance, planes, beaches) and edit a video sequence with a song track from a poop song that matches it. The more short cuts the better!
I chose the theme Love for my genre song Mashup. I thought this would be a cute montage. I found clips of people kissing and that seemed really “in love” (haha) and imported them into windows movie maker. I cut and trimmed them and linked the different scenes together. I used the song “First day of my life”, by Bright Eyes. I think that the music really meshes well with the video clips I used.
I loved doing it! What inspired me to do this assignment was my cheer team’s story, Maryland Marlins Tsunami. I honestly am not going to tell you much because I want you to watch my video for yourself. All I can say is that what happened that weekend changed everything. It impacted my life because of that one weekend. Take a look. Here is our story.
In creating this video I used note cards and I took a video using my webcam on my computer. I then opened the file in Movie Maker. I turned the volume down on the file and then used the download “YTD Video Download” to insert the song that I wanted to tell my story. This is a great download to use! It is really easy and it converts what you want from YouTube to saving it to your computer so you can use it! I then added a title and a credits text at the beginning and end of the video. That’s how I did it! You can do it too! What’s your story?
This was ours.
Here is a screen shot of me working on my video in movie maker!
In one of the episodes of the last season os Seinfeld, one of the main characters is advised to repeat “serenity now” as a mantra to ease his high blood pressure. Rather than repeat the phrase in a calm and controlled manner in a way that might help, Frank Costanza yells “SERENITY NOW!” at the top of his lungs whenever he feels stressed, thus defeating the purpose of the mantra.
I decided to create a visual piece of video and audio that would correct Frank’s mistake, and attempt to actually create one of those “serenity videos” that are often seen being played at dentist’s offices, or a spa.
I am very proud of my Serenity Now! video. I used time lapse videos I found and linked them together in Windows Movie maker. I then added music: Only Time by Enya, Serenade by Franz Schubert, and Por ti volare by Andrea Bocelli. The first video is of a rose blooming, the second is of different scenes in nature, and the third is satellite video of the earth. I also added a mini-clip in there that is really fun, but you will have to watch the video to see what it is!
“The dawn of cinema had no audio; silent movies created an atmosphere with music and the use of cue cards. Take a 3-5 minute trailer of a modern movie and render it in the form os the silent era- convert to black and white, add effects to make it look antiquated, replace the audio with a musical sound track, and add title cards for the dialogue.”
Pre-production:
The challenges for this assignment was choosing a film in the cinematography world. There are so many good films but what would fit the culture of bowties & skulls. My girlfriend threw the idea of the first movie we ever saw together, Moonrise Kingdom. Wes Anderson films have so much to offer as far as visual substance among other things.
Another challenge, was choosing the right music that would sync perfectly with Moonrise Kingdom. After searching for awhile on youtube. I found this video
and extracted the audio.
For the cards that show up every so often in silent films, I used this
Next, I would need to take the original movie trailer from youtube, seen here
Now that I had all my tools for pre-production, I was able to actually start my work
Production process:
Windows Movie Maker can be a frustrating tool, especially when it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles you expect it too. I remember a few years back, there was an old film filter but they have taken that feature away in there new versions. Finding this out, I thought it would limit me from what I was trying to accomplish. I already started in a bad creative mind but I continued.
The process involved killing the audio from the original trailer file, a lot of choppin up the trailer, and adding in time cards where necessary to tell the narrative of the story. I also had to create a font color that would blend in nice with the sepia effect.
A great thing about Windows Media Player is that you can put it straight on your Youtube account without extracting and saving the file on your computer, streamlining the whole process. I loved that.
Winding down with time and taking these moments out to post up assignments I have not posted up consolidating my posts into this one post to save sifting through a bunch of posts Visual Assignment 1 – 10 stars 3½ Stars – Minimalist TV/Movie Poster 3½ Stars – Minimalist Book Covers 3½ Stars – PSA [...]
Above is a video based on pokemon. The visual assignment, “Mockumentary With Your Favorite Archtype”. Its based on the premise “Where are they now” type of documentary where Gary Oak loses a pivotal match against his rival, Ash.
In your entire life, you will never see anything as EPIC as this! In the beginning, there was Epic Sax Guy, but now the genders have flipped to reveal something equally, if not MORE epic! I give you, Epic Instrument Woman!
This video was created for the “Viral Video Re-enactment” video assignment where you had to re-enact a famous viral video. This video is a parody of the extremely popular “Epic Sax Guy” video, which shows a European pop group singing a song called “Run Away.” The man with the saxophone solo ends up stealing the whole show with his pelvic thrusts, smooth sunglasses, and overall epicness! This part of the song was so cool that someone made a 10 hour version of just his solo. I could sit through it forever!
I not only tried to mimic this, but I gave it my own little twist. Instead of having just a saxophone, I whipped out my clarinet and flute to add some variety. The dancing continued through all 3 instruments. I wish I could dance… What I’m wearing? Don’t question that, just gaze upon the epicosity that my outfit is radiating; purple wig, purple shades, purple morphsuit ect.
I guess the inspiration for the video was the fact that I planned to create it earlier this month as an April Fools video, just never got around to it. I like goofing off on camera, and I love the sax song, so why not combine them! Unlike my other videos, there is absolutely no message to be learned here, other than BE EPIC for the camera!
This assignment seems like it would be fun; I think announcing a pro sport like soccer would be an incredible job to have, both because you would be interacting and engaging your knowledge around some of the best players in the world, and also because you have that power to influence and connect to people through what you say on the air, and how well you get the message across. I started out by looking at a some examples that would actually bring me to a completed assignment. Many of the links found through the Play-by-Play assignment page were no longer working, so I just got an idea of what some people did through the ones that did work!
The first example I viewed was done by a guy named Andrew Johnson; he used an NFL touchdown pass play as his video for which he would do commentary. He did a decent job on it, but his commentary was a bit off at one point and this took away from the quality of his assignment, but an overall good effort. I realize that video editing can be tough, along with getting the audio to match up well. One downside here was that he did not underline his process at all, so I couldn’t really gain any new knowledge concerning what he did or what his inspirations were really.
The second example I viewed was done by a former DS106 student James Cruz. His assignment used a Halo clip from a professional gaming circuit, which I thought was really cool. He provided a bunch of off-the-cuff commentary, and sort of used past experiences to augment his explanations and inspirations for interacting with video games. He provided some input to his inspiration to do this assignment and the process that he used to create it. It was an overall helpful source to look at, and I enjoyed watching it!
I started searching on YouTube while thinking about what I wanted to give a blow by blow analysis on. Here is what I came up with… CUTE PENGUINS!! Check it out!
I am probably going to chop this video up a little bit using MPEG Streamclip first off, and then strip it of the background audio. I will probably add a base layer of some type of audio which will work well to complement the scene and my commentary, so it’s not completely boring and solely my voice, so I think that doing this will make it more enjoyable to listen to. I haven’t decided whether I want to use iMovie or Audacity to record my audio. Right now I am thinking Audacity because it is built for doing that, but I will do some research and see what other people have done! Anyways, this is about it for my pre-work for this assignment, and I hope you all watch it when I am finished!
