Who doesn’t like video games?

Who remembers spending hours at a time in front of the tv playing your favorite game? Whether you played Super Mario Bros or Zelda, Sonic or War of Witchcraft, we all had different systems we used to play these games.  As we grew up, so did the gaming world.  It seemed like every year we were asking for a new console for Christmas!

I thought it would be fun to show the evolution of the gaming systems for the product evolution assignment.

How many do you remember? How many did you own? What was your favorite game to play and on which console? For me, my favorite was playing Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64, and then I loved this Luigi’s Haunted Mansion game for the Gamecube.

Enjoy the video and don’t forget to comment your favorites!

To start this assignment I found all the pictures on this website, and then saved certain ones to my computer to use.  For the background music, I wanted to choose something very popular so I decided on the Super Mario Bros. theme song.  After locating this on youtube, I downloaded it using http://en.savefrom.net/.

I wanted to put this on Audacity so I had to convert it to a WAV file using an online converter.

Now that I had all of my things downloaded, I used Windows Live Movie Maker and uploaded all my pictures in chronological order and used the caption button to add text to each slide and made each slide 2 seconds long.  Once I seen how long the video was going to be, I went to Audacity and uploaded the mario song.

Since the video was only 52 seconds long, I trimmed the audio to be exactly 52 seconds and faded the ending.

After I saved this, I went back to Movie Maker and uploaded the song.

Then I saved it and uploaded it to Youtube.

The Moment We’ve All Been Waiting For

It’s almost time for the best act in the circus! Leo the Lion is an extraordinary, popular lion that is the envy of all other acts.  People from all over come to see this magnificent creature perform!

But wait, oh no! There’s trouble!

I got the idea to do the Madagascar theme from searching through movies that featured lions.  I knew already that many have done and will do a Lion King clip, and though this is a great movie I wanted to be a little different.  At first I was trying to think how can I include a clip from Madagascar in the middle of the foley clip, but I couldn’t think of any good stories.

So I started looking up clips of lion training gone wrong and found some pretty funny ones but none that gave me what I wanted.  I wanted a video that featured the lion more than the human, and thats when I found the clip of Alex’s show.  I downloaded it using http://en.savefrom.net/.

Now that I had my story straight, I went to the sound clips on soundcloud and found the ones I wanted to use.

After I downloaded these, I imported them to Audacity and put them in their appropriate spots.

I didn’t have to change any of the sounds becuase they all fit perfectly.  So after I did this I saved it and went to Windows Live Movie Maker to start my story.

To start, I uploaded the foley video and turned the video volume all the way off.  I then clicked add title in 6 different places that I wanted to have text in.  These included the beginning titles and the ending credits.

For a music background I went to Freesound and downloaded a clip of circus music, which I then imported into the movie maker along with the Audacity sound clip I previously made. After that I uploaded it to Youtube with the appropriate tags.

Return To The Silent Film Era Tutorial

Downloading the audio and video from Youtube:

1. Choose a movie that you absolutely love. Find the trailer on Youtube.
2. You will be using keepvid.com for a lot of the ripping of the audio and video from Youtube. Copy and paste the URL of the Youtube video to the keepvid page. There is a box with a download tab.
3. After pasting the URL, press the download tab.
4. Java will ask permission to run. Press “run this time.” Another box will open, check the I accept box and press run again.
5. A new page will open up and ask the type of format you want to download.
6. Click on the format and the file will be in your downloads folder.

For searching Youtube for good audio, I typed “silent film music” and used keepvid to download just the mp3 of that particular video.

Once you have video and audio for your assignment then it’s time to open Window Live Media Player. I know this tutorial has its limitation. Sorry for all the Mac users but this tutorial isn’t for you.

Editing:

1. You can drag and drop both your audio and video files inside WMP window for editing.
2. Cut off all audio from the video. In the video tool tab, there is a video volume icon, click it and a bar will show up, put the indicator all the way to the left of that bar like in the picture below.

3. Put a Sepia video effect on the video, or one of the black and white video effects work as well. I am partial to Sepia.
4. There will be times where you have to use cards that tell a little about the story since audio dialogue wasn’t possible in the silent film era. Use this or something similar:
SilentMovieCard-NTSC-DVwidescreen

Add splits where necessary in the video and drag the picture file between the split you made and add a caption layering on top of that image. You want the entire feel of a silent film movie so you need the a font that was popular back then. This blog is your guide to downloading that font you will be using.

5. Things should be coming together seamlessly, and everything during editing should be smooth. It’s usually all the pre production stuff that gets me. Once you have put all the cards you need in the video. I suggest putting a medium or fast fade out in the audio.

Exporting to Youtube:

The greatest thing about Windows Live Media Player is the feature to upload straight to your Youtube account. You can do so by pressing the Youtube icon on the home tab.

Random Object Pirate Ship

I decided to add another challenge into the assignment bank using the world of Minecraft. DS106 is all about creating so I thought Minecraft would be perfect.

I started doing this assignment myself yesterday and finished it today.

Instructions:

Enter Minecraft world.
Create a random object that doubles as a pirate ship and record a video showcasing your end product.

If you don’t have Minecraft, then give a random object in life a characteristic of a pirate ship (i.e. sail).

Submit an Assignment + Video Assignments: Why so Serious? – 3 stars

I made this one:

Why should movies be so serious? Take a clip from a movie that is supposed to be serious and remove the audio.  Then, replace the audio with that from a comedy movie.  Try to line up the speaking from the audio clip with the movements and actions in the video clip.  This creates a hilarious effect that we all enjoy.  Try using well known movies and clips so that we knwo what the actor should be saying.  It makes the clip all the more funny.

I mashed up a clip from “Scarface” and the audio from “Old School.” I thought the “We’re going streaking!” part made a hilarious mash up with Tony Montana shooting up the gangsters trying to take his house.

Used Video Pad Video Editor. Extracted the audio from the movie “old school”. Put it on top of the scene from “Scarface”. Tried to match them up as good as I could.

5 Second Film: Damn You, Window!

“Make a supershort, 5-second film; basically enough time for one gag, bit, or joke.”

My girlfriend’s cat, Binx, starring in “Damn You, Window!”

Video Assignments: Show Off – 5 stars

So you’ve come to the end of the season of DS106 (yes the season, because DS106 is #4life) and you want to showcase your work! Go through all of the work you did for DS106 and showcase it as you see fit with audio and video.  Ideally this will combine your audio, visual, design, and video.  Show us what you’re most proud of and display it in an awesome way!

I pulled all my previous files into VideoPad VideoEditor and put all my favorites together into one video compilation.

Video Assignments: Where do you want to go? – 3 stars

I created an assignment called Where do you want to go?

I really want to go to Ireland. It is so beautiful there and it’s a really old and charming country. I would probably live there if I could. I used Windows Movie Maker to make a slideshow of  the pictures I found through Google Image search and then added a video I found on YouTube of flying through Ireland. I added an audio clip of celtic music I also found on YouTube. To convert the audio I used Youtube-mp3.org.

Video Assignments- Y.O.L.O Is The Motto!- 2.5 stars

For a lot of people, Y.O.L.O (You Only Live Once) is a term used prior to, after, or while doing something morally unacceptable or idiotic. For this video assignment, just like charades, try to explain what this word means to you through storytelling, by using pictures or videos and not just explaining it through words. Even if you hate the word or if it means something completely different than what is explained above, try to incorporate it in your video. Challenge, >> your video should be less than 5min (5 min max) << ENJOY!!

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/y-o-l-o-is-the-motto

I’m not the kind of person who really uses the term Y.O.L.O. frequently, and I fear that a lot of people use it too casually. My video shows what Y.O.L.O. should really mean. It doesn’t mean partying every night to me, I believe that it should mean pushing the envelope and really being a dangerous daredevil. I used Windows Movie Maker for this compilation. I broke up the two videos I used with some entertaining pictures of what Y.O.L.O. could mean.

this, love, pick, tape, tell, then, bear

This is what love is. Pick your favorite music tape. Tell your friends. Then try not to get eaten by a bear.

My story is very weird and random, but I guess that’s what we were going for here.
