For my second created Digital Assignment, I decided to use the app Vine. I had to use it for one of my Video Assignments and really enjoyed it. It was an easy to use app yet a challenging assignment since Vine videos are so short. There have been a few Visual Assignments like the one I decided to create, yet I thought that turning it into a Video Assignment would be a fun change of pace. It would challenge people to use items at their disposal instead of Googleing an image. I hope you guys like it!
Guess that Book!
For this assignment, use the app Vine to visually create a book title. Find objects, landmarks, or think of some other creative way to verbally or physically represent a book title. Then record them in quick succession using the app. Then upload the video and have your classmates guess the book title! (By the way here is the answer.)
For my Visual Assignment 1 I chose 1 Second Video from the Assignment Bank.
I would like to tell you a story in 1 second : )
Here it is:
To me, this video seemed like one that would go viral pretty quickly. I think that people would be very entertained by some guy getting locked in a lion enclosure. Therefore, I decided to create a story in which This video has been an internet sensation:
I don’t usually watch Tosh.0, but I know that the show makes fun of online videos so I assumed it would be appropriate. I used an episode uploaded onto YouTube to get the clip for this assignment. Here are the Foley clips that I used, I tried to select ones that were created for this class section, however for some reason there were some clips that I couldn’t download (and some were longer than 30 seconds) so I had to use previous work.
I used this website to download the videos off of YouTube. I then fit them into Windows Movie Maker. It was really easy to edited them to fit together, I just used the “Split” tool under Video Edit to take the parts of the Tosh.0 clip that I wanted. After that I downloaded the sounds off of SoundCloud and fit them in as well! Super simple! I saved it as an MP4 and had to upload it to YouTube and embed it from there.
The only problem was that I had a lot of time at the end of the video that didn’t seem to have audio to go with it. There were only two Foleys for the last section, and neither of which were from very recently. My only thought is that previous classes much have been using a shorter version of the video, because all of my other sounds fit so I don’t think I missed a section or anything like that. I debated cutting it out, but decided to learn the entire video and just have it silent until the very end!
For my second video assignment I decided to create my very first Vine! Everyone is always taking about the app, so I decided to give it a try! This is a Vine of me babysitting. I have known these boys for about 8 years, and I love hanging out with them! I hope you like it!
All I had to do for this assignment was download the app onto my phone! It then gives a step by step demonstration of how to create a video (basically you just hold down the screen when there is something you want to shoot).
The one draw back of this Vine was the battle scars I got from the very last shot. They have kind of faded over night, but that cat was vicious.
I completed the assignment why so serious because it sounded really fun. I used a song about montages from Team America World Police and added it to the famous montage scene in Rocky. It’s spot on and really funny. The song is only 80 second long and the video clip was 3 minute long so I had to be strategic and have the song start and end at an appropriate moment. I ended the song when Rocky kissed “the girl” and made that the climax and cut out the part about winning the face.
I used savefrom.net to grab both the Rocky and Team America videos. I had to extra the audio from the team america video using adobe audition and then add it to the movie in windows movie maker. I had to mute the existing music in the Rocky video to make it work. Hope you enjoy the result!
This was another fun one for me–music videos can be some of the strangest films, even when the actual music is playing. Just like the actual song, a music video is often a piece of art and an artist’s expression in and of itself. That’s why I like this assignment so much. It lets me ruin an artist’s vision and create my own! That sounds awful, but I think it’s a lot of fun to be able to take inspiration from other people and turn it into something new. As you might have expected, I decided to take a comedic approach to this. I chose a very dark and sinister music video (Raining Blood by Slayer), and decided to make it a little lighter. I found a sound effect of a guy laughing in a sinister manner, but he has a cold so it doesn’t end up sounding very sinister. Then, just as the band hits the stage, the Benny Hill theme song comes in. Seeing a heavy metal band headbanging to the Benny Hill theme is definitely something special to behold! To cap it all off, I added in a little girl giggling at the very end because who wouldn’t want to laugh after all that?! Check it out here:
I gave this one a shot because I just think there are endless possibilities. This technique, as Alfred Hitchcock describes, is a way to use editing to change the emotion of a scene. As he describes, the same reaction can appear very differently depending on what you cut to/from. For my example, I found three video clips on YouTube. First, I found a funny clip of a dog on a couch. Then, I found a clip of Jim Carrey and Conan O’Brien laughing. Lastly, I found a clip of a tornado ripping through a suburban backyard. As you can imagine, puppies and tornados generally elicit drastically different reactions. In my mashup, Carrey and O’Brien laugh at the funny dog clip, making them seem like fun-loving people. However, the clip then cuts to the tornado ripping through the backyard and then shows Carrey and O’Brien laughing again, making them appear sadistic and unsympathetic. Check it out here:

For the second assignment I was looking around the possible items and came across the one that requires you to use Vine. This really sparked my interest since Vine has made a huge splash in the video space with just 6 seconds of footage. People are no longer going to their desktops to create video they are doing it right on their phones. Now I have never done Vine and this was a good excuse to practice. I had no idea it was so hard! You can’t dub in the music so you have to do that at the same time. So I had to go through my shot sequence with thinking where I would put my laptop to play the music. Since I am in a hotel this week and they did a towel animal it was too cute not to use. I came up with a story that he is my new friend and he spends the day with me while I work. He loves popcorn so I give him some at the end to say thanks. I had to do this a few times because the towel animal would fall apart as I moved him, or the song wouldn’t go so well, or the shot was dumb when I played it back. You are able to touch the screen and release to move to the next scene but that is it. No editing after or anything so you have to start over. Not sure how these folks do it with so many vines online.
Here you go! My first Vine and the future of video creation on your phone. (Make sure you click the speaker icon in upper left to turn on sound)

Also this does make me want to try another one at Christmas with my nieces and nephews. They are such hams!

I was trying to think what assignments to do this week that would make me laugh and be interesting to make. This one about making a normal scene sound like a chipmunk when you speed it up was great. I decided to take an iconic song in Dream Girls that Jennifer Hudson sings and turn it into a chipmunk version. First the song is sung slow and takes a while to build up so it was perfect. Not only that but everyone knows it so it would also get a laugh. I went to YouTube to find a video clip of her singing it and downloaded it using http://en.savefrom.net/. Next I use my movie editing software to play around with the speed. At first I made it 4x but you couldn’t make out the words so I toyed around and settled on 1.75X. I then added a title and closing credits, put in some transitions at front and after/before each text that comes in. Finally, I played it and laughed at my work. Oh and I am a big fan of the Chipmunk movies too so this is great way to do my own version too. Hope you enjoy!
My changed one where she is only thinking like a chipmunk that wants her nuts is here:

Not bad overall right? Was interesting concept.
