A day as my cats

In the assignment bank, I found this cool assignment where you combine pictures and videos of your animals to show what a typical day looks like for them.

What I decided to do was pick a day and record bits of my cats throughout the day and then put them together in a video.

Because of my failed attempts earlier this week with the editing software on my computer, I put all of the videos together on the iMovie app.

I then downloaded the video to my computer and was able to edit it. I sped some parts up and added captions that might reflect my cats’ thoughts.

After I saw what the total time was going to be, I found some loop music on FreeSound and duplicated it on Audacity to fit the time frame of my video.

Luckily, the video exported with no issues this time. I think if it had issues, I would’ve given up.

The only problem with this video is that it cut some of the top parts of the shot off. You can’t see the cats’ faces in some of the parts. I guess in the future I will try to record things horizontally.

I enjoyed this assignment as well. The cats weren’t doing much the day that I recorded this, so it would be fun to do it again in the future on a day that they are more active and crazy.

This one was worth 3 stars, finishing my week.

A Day in the Life

For this assignment (3 stars), I decided to show a day in the life of one of my character’s animals. My character, Kate, saves animals for a living and this is one of the animals she saved. He now lives with Kate. I thought this would be a different way to tie my character in and show the perspective of the animals she saves. As you can see in the video, he is extremely lazy! I started the assignment by thinking of things I could get pictures of. I used my cat in the video and just took pictures of things he was doing. The only thing I could not get a picture of, was him eating. Every time I tried to get a picture of him, he would walk away. The saying that cats do what they want is so accurate!  I then added the pictures to iMovie and added captions/titles to the pictures. I also added an intro for the video and then uploaded the video to youtube.

Until next time,

Emily

Mufasa’s Transformation from a Pup to an Adult

I chose this 3 star assignment to show the transformation of the character Mufasa from the radio show Apocalyptic Airwave.  We didn’t really know much about Mufasa other than Carson had saved him from certain death and nursed him back to health.

Here is a little clip of Mufasa as a small pup to becoming the threat he is today.   Hope you enjoy it’s better with the Volume up FYI.

A Day in the Life of Jade

“Create a day in the life as an animal. Pick from beginning to end pictures or videos of a perfect day in the life of an animal and create a video out of them. Be creative! Include music to go with the feel of the pictures or videos used.” – 4.5 stars

By now I’ve done several assignments focused on my dog, Jade. I love her. She’s great. She’s also easy to film/photograph and who doesn’t love looking at dogs. Anyway, that’s beside the point. Jade lives a very charmed life. She’s well fed, well rested, and very, very loved. She’s also incredibly entitled. She seems to have more personality than most of the people I know and she definitely knows what she wants. All of this makes it easy to assume she has a pretty good day almost all of the time, so I filmed her doing some of the things she loves to do the most. Enjoy!

Importing from phone

To make the video, I went through my phone and chose the pictures and videos that I felt best represented what she does on a typical day. Once I had all the pictures, I uploaded them in the order I wanted them to movie maker. I added in a Title and credit page as was required and set about finding a song to set the video to.

final edits

I decided to use a cover of “Dog Days are Over” because it has dog in the title and because I absolutely adore the group who made it. A link to the video can be found at the bottom of the page.

getting music

Once the song was added, I saved the movie and uploaded it to YouTube. Once the process was complete, I copied the embed code and plopped it here.

I Want to be Treated Like a Dog

Good Afternoon Everybody!

This has to be one of the better weeks of Digital Storytelling! Movie making is extremely fun and for the most part, I enjoying playing around with the iMovie editor. For this week, we needed to do at least two assignments worth a total of 8 stars or more.

The Assignment

The assignment can be found here and it is worth 4 stars. The exact directions are: “Create a day in the life as an animal. Pick from begining to end pictures or videos of a perfect day in the life of an animal and create a video out of them. Be creative! Include music to go with the feel of the pictures or videos used.”

The Story

Let’s be honest here, anytime there is a possibility of doing an assignment about pets, I choose it. I love my dog and getting to incorporate him into my assignments is a “hoot” as they say. The video should show that my dog actually leads a rather pampered and well taken care of life. So, the next thing I must say is this: If this looks pampered to you, then you might need to reconsider your dog ownership. Do not be offended in any way but hear me out: It is my firm belief that people do not understand what an animal needs. Obviously most of us have not the slightest idea of what a tiger might need, but we also make the mistake of believing our domesticated pets are like us. They are not. I have owned dogs before and I did not take very good care of them, I understand that now. I wanted this video to show the minimum that most dogs need on a daily basis and if you aren’t doing the minimum, try and step up your game. Your pet will thank you. Pretty much all dogs need exercise. I mean REAL exercise where they end up panting and tired. Small dogs might be okay with a brisk walk but bigger dogs will need significantly more. Tying them up  outside will not be sufficient. I see this frequently in my neighborhood and then I see anti social and aggressive dogs. Go for a run! It can only do you good as well. There is much more I can rant about from feeding to grooming to training, but I also have much more to learn myself. I just hope that after watching this video, you may want to glance at your dog and ask yourself if you are giving them the minimum for them to be happy. Many behavior issues stem from boredom and not enough mental stimulation… speaking of boredom, I think my dog needs to go on a run right about now.

The Process

First thing to do is to record all of your video clips or gather all of your pictures. Making a folder on your desktop to hold all of the video clips is a great way to stay organized. Next, find some potential music that you would want to use for your video. You can use music that you have personally bought from iTunes (or where ever) only if you are making a video for your own personal use. If you are going to upload it to YouTube, I would suggest caution. I use music by Kevin MacLeod and as long as you give him credit and don’t alter the music, you can use it royalty free. Now that you have everything ready, it’s time for some editing! I use iMovie and I have posted a video below that shows what I did. Unfortunately, my sound disappeared on that video so I will describe some of the steps here.

  1. Go to the top where you will see two buttons titled “New” and “Import”, click on “New”. If you want a theme you can choose one from what is available, but I usually go with the no theme option. Next, click on “import” and begin importing all the video clips you think you might use. You will see them all show up.
  2. Begin selecting clips or parts of clips that you want and place them below in the designated little boxes, where your “movie timeline” is located. Once you have all clips in an order you like, you can move on to transitions.
  3. Transitions, music, titles, and etc are located on the bottom left corner. Clicking on these will give you many options and I suggest you play around with a few of them. Sometimes, something that seems like a good idea doesn’t look good in the final product. The video below shows how everything looks and what you need to click in order to make your transitions longer and add your titles.
  4. Music is usually my last step. Click on “iTunes” in the lower left hand corner or click “import” and choose your music file. The effect is the same, your music will come up and you will be able to listen to it and choose parts of it. Drag your music clip to it’s designated spot below your movie timeline. You can see how this is done in the video.
  5. When you are done tweaking, go to “File” “Share” and “file”. This will allow you choose your resolution, titles, descriptions, etc. It will take a few seconds or minutes for iMovie to export your final product. Now you are done!

A Dogs Life

A Dogs Life  was created using pictures and video from my iPhone and some from the computer. Movie Maker and VidEditor were used to create the video. Sound was added, but when I listened to it after it was published, the volume was low.

Video Assignment 3

http://www.photosnack.com/gcaron/ds106.html

I made a slide show of what life would be like as a dog. I think this the thought process of a dog and things I would want to do as a dog.

I should of chose my dog

Sorry that my video is so lame.. I should of chose to take photos of my dog throughout the day but instead you all can see I chose my cat “Alley”  Alley does not really do much all day long as you can probably tell from the photos.  We found Alley and about 8 of her brothers and sisters under our front porch when I was 3 years old, Alley was a kitten at the time and was probably just a few days old.  I begged my mom to keep her so Alley became my first pet!  Alley’s life throughout the day is typically boring.  She usually just stays in her little bed in my parents room for most of the day.  She is not too sociable so if we have family or friends over she is generally hiding.

  • I created this slideshow on my phone using an app called slidemaker.  I uploaded the photos that I had took throughout the day and uploaded the slideshow to YouTube, I then logged onto my computer to embed the YouTube video that is featuredabove.

Life as an Animal

My first assignment of the week is called Life as an Animal and it is worth four stars. The assignment required you to take pictures or videos of a perfect day in the life of an animal and make a video out of it. I chose to create a video about a perfect day for my dog Berrin.

Steps:

  1. Go to the website called Not Digital Truth Telling
  2. Click on the link that says Week 10
  3. Scroll down to the Video Assignment section and click on the underlined link in the first paragraph colored in blue text.
  4. Go to page four and click on the assignment called Life as an Animal
  5. Open the link Life as an Animal
  6. Find the pictures you want to use and open up MovieMaker(Windows)
  7. Drop the pictures into MovieMaker, and choose to add text, music, etc.

This assignment had its challenges but was fun to create because I now know how to create videos on my computer. My first challenge with the assignment was downloading Windows MoiveMaker because I didn’t have it on my computer. My second challenge was getting all of the pictures I wanted to use for the short video. My last challenge was figuring out how to get vimeo to accept the video I created it, so I could add it to my blog. I figured out that a I had to save my video as a movie, and MovieMaker could save the video as an MP4 so that it would work with vimeo. I liked being able to figure out what kind of pictures I wanted to use for the video because I had to many to choose from. Learning how to use MovieMaker to change the font, the way each picture changes to the next, how to add music, etc. was exciting to figuring out.
