Album Cover

I chose this assignment because music plays a big part in my life. If I’m not listening to music, then I am producing my own. Album artwork can do wonders for artists, even if no one has ever heard of them before. As long as the artwork looks amazing, people are going to give your music a listen, based off curiosity.

My first task was to find the title of my band/group by clicking the link.  The name that came up was South Sutton Meeting House. I found it comical, but it worked. Next, I clicked another link, where I had to scroll to the bottom and pick the last four to five words of the last quote. The title of my first album was called, “Go On Again”. Finally, it was time to choose the album art for the cover. I had to select the third image from the flickr link. Thankfully, all of the choices seemed to work for me, and I knew instantly how I wanted to arrange my cover. I resized the image to make it look like an actual album cover. Settled on a font for the band name and gave it a nice blue coating. For the title, I chose a different font and kept it white. Overall, it turned out pretty clean, and I am happy with the results.

This assignment was fun, but this was not my first attempt at making an album cover. I used to practice making cover art for my instrumental songs using Photoshop. My skills are decent, but I am still learning how to use the program because it has a lot to offer.

Album Cover

I remember when I was younger that I was very much into music. My music. I collected albums and would just sit and listen as it brought me to a different world. These days, it seems as though recording artists aren’t too concerned with creating albums anymore. They seem more content with 1 or 2 singles and cashing out. This is probably the best way to go for most of these musicians as they lack the talent to produce more than one song every couple of years. So when I swathe “Album Cover” assignment, I figured I would give it a go. It was basically a plug and play assignment though. I had to click here and there and select a predetermined item to use an integral part of my album cover. It certainly made things easier, but the creativity was a tad hindered and the major pieces of the work were left to chance.

I visited this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random   to select my band name, which turned out to be “Red Gum”. Interesting to say the least. I then visited http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 to select the name of the album which turned out to be: “Things You Only Hoped For”. This seemed a tad egotistical to me, but then again, so are musicians, so I guess it works. Finally, I visited http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days and was told select the third image however, when I viewed the third image, I didn’t think it was appropriate for class. It was absolutely perfect though. It was a shot of a beautiful woman kneeling on a bed taking off her red panties. I thought to myself, “RedGum” “Things you only hoped for”… this goes pretty good! But I decided to refresh the screen and go with the next one in line which was the boy running down the hill seemingly excited about something.

To edit the my work, I used Gimp 2.8. I simply added the text boxes and typed in red letters. Nothing fancy. But it was all I hoped for. 15302801051_cd6b4660d7_k

Roman Catholicism in Kenya

Roman Catholicism in Kenya

For my first visual assignment for the week, I chose to make an album cover.

I was given this lovely picture for my cover, which I inverted and changed in Photoshop. The name of my band in “Roman Catholicism in Kenya” and the name of our newest album is “States and all their Clans are Preserved” (which is from this quote by Confucius) .

I had a lot of fun working on this visual assignment because it was very random, a lot of fun, and pretty easy.

New Release: Archibald Clinkard

2

So I have to admit- this is not the first time I have done this assignment. In my (freshman?) year of high school this idea was floating around Facebook and a ton of people did it, including myself. I had a blast doing this assignment, and it made me laugh really hard.

First step: pick a name. I actually cheated on this step, because the first name generated for me was “Athabasca (Saskatchewan provincial electoral district)”. That’s just a bit too much of a mouthful for me. So I hit random article again, and this time I came up with  Archibald Clinkard. Not bad! So I continued.

Then came the quote. Oh my gosh, this quote. I actually laughed out loud, which is pretty rare for me. The quote that came up was from Joss Whedon, and the last few lines are priceless.

I could not conceive that [fans] actually wanted me to sign something. It took a long time for me to figure out (a) just say ‘Thank you’ and sign the thing, and (b) smile in the picture, because if you try to just half-smile you’re going to look constipated.

By this point I was literally praying that I got a good picture on the random flickr image…..and I did. I couldn’t have picked a better one myself.

On Watch.

From there, I opened up photoshop, uploaded the picture, and played around with some fonts. I actually made two different ones, because I am a perfectionist and what else would I be doing at 12:30 a.m.? You can check out the initial scrapped one here, if you’re curious. For some reason, this looks like a Vampire Weekdend-esque album to me, which just makes me laugh even harder.

New album out! “Beylerbeyi Event: expecting different results” get it now!

This assignment was too cool to pass up!  I think that this is a really cool idea.  I wish I had been creative to think of something like this on my own for a post!

So here it is!

albumcover

I used pixlr again.  I am in love with this web app.  It is so cool and free!!

The Beylerbeyi Event was a revolt during the Ottoman Empire.  It made me think of old empires and bloody wars.  I used orange for this font, and chose a font I thought looked archaic.

The quote is actually a really awesome quote by Einstein.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

This describes the themes I learned today during the talks and pod casts so well it was kind of creepy.

I had a problem with the image.  Some publishers don’t let you download their images from flickr.  I had to do another random que to get one that wasn’t all copy righted.  I don’t know if the image fits the whole story.  I liked the idea of a kind of revolt against current archaic learning methods.  Why keep beating our heads against the wall, why not just utilize the web and technology of our times to learn more efficiently and quickly.

Visual Assignment #44: “So here’s something fun for everyone to do, should be quick and easy, but try to make it pretty. First, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The title of the article is now the name of your band. Next, go here: http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 Go to the bottom of the page. The last four to five words of the last quote are the title of your first album Lastly, go here: http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days Select the 3rd image. It is the picture for your album cover. Manipulate the picture, resize it, add some other color, whatever. Do the same with the band name and album title, put them over top. However you wanna do it. Make it look cool.”

I just followed the instructions and used Sketchbook Pro on the iPad to create the composition.

ds106 Choice Assignment A – Tomlin

Fake Album Cover by Keri Tomlin

Fake Album Cover by Keri Tomlin

So my first choice assignment was a fake album cover. The task was simple, click on the link provided for a random Wikepedia article. I ended up with “Secure Network.” It then was the name of my “band” and it was followed by clicking on the link for random quotes. The last four to five words were the name of the supposed album. Then, click on the third image brought up by the image website they provided. I feel that I was pretty lucky, because this definitely sounds/looks like an album I would pick up to try out.

Satisfy your widest ambition, indeed.

An Album Cover Assignment (2 Stars)

This picture is what I created for the “An Album Cover” assignment. After seeing Kaitlyn’s submission for this assignment, I decided to attempt this one too!

The directions are super simple. First, you click here, which directs you to a wiki article. The title of the article is your band name. I got this:

Screen shot 2013-02-14 at 8.12.40 PM

Pretty cool name, right?

Next, you click here, which directs you to a site with quotes. The last 4-5 words of the quote on the page is the album’s title. I got this:

Finally, you click here, and pick the third picture, which is the picture of your band’s album. Here, I got this:

So, once I got everything, I went on Pixlr.com again and chose the advanced editor. There, I chose a cool looking filter, added in my texts, changed the colours, and BAM! My first album (cover!) Now, I just need a guitarist, bass player, drummer, vocalist, some songs, and we’re good.
