Story a Day May #4: Stay/Go/Road Playlist Story

Okay, none of y’all are dog enough to step up to the digital a story a day in may task, but this dog is going for the full ride. There is so much to choose from in the ds106 assignments submitted by participants, and if that is not enough, there is some place with like 30 or 40 tools you can use.

For today, while sitting on a train from Vermont to the Largish Apple, I sat admiring the wet landscape, and decided to return to one of the most creative assignments (and made by a UMW student)- making a story from the titles of songs in an audio playlist. I had done this before, so I upped it a bit by pulling small bits from each song to go along with the flow.

Being here on the road, and thinking about the longer trip ahead this summer, here is Stay/Go/Road

Stay/Go/Road Playlist Story

Playlist Story (Visual Assignment)

This is my visual assignment.Ā  This one was def cool.Ā  Looking through my playlist, I was able to pull songs with the words I was looking for, just by using the search feature in itunes.

It was kinda cool to do a lil love story, b/c I just proposed to my fiancee last night !Ā  We’re both in a lovey mood, and very happy of course, so it was easy to transfer these emotions into a song/story/poem.

This kinda sums up our story, very breifly, in less than 100 words.

( and for those who are wondering, she said YES !)

Playlist Poetry

I actually liked doing this a lot! I think I might do this a bunch of times since I have over 6000 songs on my itunes to work with. I only looked through A B and C’s for this first one, so I have a ton more to look through. Look out for more of my playlist poetry!

My Visual Assignment

I did this one with itunes. I started looking through my songs and just dragged some into a playlist that had interesting titles and after I had about 5 songs I decided to actually look at the playlist and see what I could make sense of and this is what came out of it. This is my poem. Itā€™s a typical subject, but hey, thatā€™s what I have on my computer. Itā€™s about a girl that gets cheated on and is upset. Finally, she says forget him and decides to start fresh (and sheā€™s happy without him). I think itā€™s kind of empowering for women.

Playlist Poem

I took a stab at the ā€œStories written in Windows Media assignment.ā€

http://ds106.us/2011/02/03/stories-written-in-windows-media-player/

I donā€™t have that much music on my computer but as I was scrolling through, I picked up on a theme of pain and injuries so I went with that.Ā  And then of course I had to end it with Lady Gaga.

By the Wayā€¦.

Here is my first ā€œSubmit and Assignmentā€ assignment that Iā€™ve done! I decided to do the playlist story assignment first, because it seemed like a lot of fun. Iā€™m really intrigued by how thereā€™s the potential for so much creativity in assignments like this, even as your creativity is so restrained ā€” you canā€™t use words that arenā€™t whole song titles.

I started by copying most of the titles that seemed like they could be useful in telling a story into a special playlist. That totaled 190 songs. From those I began picking and choosing, and slowly a story formed. I had only a vague idea of what sort of story I had in mind; aside from a girl being involved, I wasnā€™t sure of any of the details. Iā€™m actually fairly pleased with what I ended up creating. Itā€™s considerably darker than I would have originally planned, perhaps excessively so. Nonetheless, it strikes me as pretty cool, and Iā€™d like to work with this medium again.

And hereā€™s the version with the artists and time included, in case people are curious:

Enjoy!

ds106: Visual Assignment 46: Stories Written In Windows Media Player

Hereā€™s my Visual Assignment 46: Stories Written In Windows Media Player submission. My goal was to keep the story as succinct and as coherent as possible. I created a new Playlist, then populated it with tunes from the Music Library. I used a cover version to try and create a sense of rhythm in the story (Is that outside the rules of the assignment?).

Playlist Narrative: Flori-DUH

I make no effort to conceal my contempt for Flori-DUH in this playlist assignment. Here is my iTunes #ds106 playlist assignment.

Love Story (of sorts)

This all started with today’s assignment for the Daily Shoot:

“Power plugs are ubiquitous. Can you make a creative photo of such a common thing?Ā  #ds448″

It took me pretty much all day to figure out what I wanted to take a photo of because power plugs are so ordinary, I couldn’t think of any idea that wouldn’t look really trite. However, after looking a few photos that were already up I got an idea:

What if I took a photo of an Australian Plug trying to fit into an American outlet? American outlets always look so sad, so if I took a photo of something that couldn’t fit in the outlet, it would be even more sad.

Luckily I was at home for the Superbowl and was able to find my phone and charger that I used when I was studying abroad in Australia last year (funny note: my phone which has been off since mid-July still has a 1/2 battery life!)

I took a lot of photos of putting the Aussie plug into the American outlet, but this is the photo I liked the best.

Irreconcilable Differences

Then I was trying to think of something cool I could do with all the photos that I had left over from the shoot since some of them were kind of cool. Originally I was just going to do a complied screen shot, but then I noticed that all the image titles were numbers like: 2156.

I decided it would be funny if I made a song playlist poem for the photos, similar to what Colleen has done.

The poem turned out a tad more weird/creepy(?) than I thought it would be, but it was fun to have a different twist on the assignment!

Here is my masterpiece in all it’s glory (also check it out on my flickr gallery if you want)

Written In Tunes

I just finished clearing out my RSS feed, left a few comments, and feel a general sense of “being caught up.” Not quite sure what to do next, I decided to quickly try out a random assignment from #ds106. It looks like this:

Write a sentence (preferably somewhat coherent, yet on the nonsensical side), a poem, or a quick story using the titles of songs you have in your Windows Media Player (iTunes may possibly work as well). Print the screen. Paste it in Microsoft Paint (or some higher-end equivalent). Save it, upload it, and share. If you could even respond to the one I originally created as a challenge (possibly even embed it as a comment on that blog entry), that would be even cooler.

This was a fun little reminder that there are stories and poems everywhere we look. We just have to look. Looking forward to trying this with some classes soon, but in the meantime what is this story about to you? I tried to deal with plot, character, setting etc…Maybe after reading your comments. I can turn it into a short story or a chapter in my memoir.
