Anthony, Are You Making It Snow?

I happened upon the Twilight Zone episode “It’s A Good Life” by accident. Our #ds106zone class has a Twilight Zone theme so I was hunting around watching episodes I hadn’t seen before and I’m glad I chose this one. I really enjoyed it. Towards the end of the episode, Anthony starts to make it snow. I got a kick out of that scene and thought, wouldn’t it be cool (pun intended) if someone could make it snow in the summer.

Then I stumbled across this ds106 assignment: Winterize It!

Take a picture from summer and winterize it! Using photoshop or an online photo editor such as picmonkey.com lighten the color to make the temperature appear cooler, add scarves, snow flakes, or even a snowman! Use your imagination and take a photo from another season and turn it into a winter theme to prepare for the winter season ahead.

Perfect! Now…what photo should I start with…I had an awesome photo of the Golden Temple in Kyoto Japan taken in the summer. It’s a great looking building so I photoshopped it to make it look like it was colder and snowing. I added snow the roofs, tried to emulate some snow drifts/irregular patterns caused by the wind. I adjusted the colors to match a more desaturated winter look.

I’m pretty happy with how this turned out over all.

Tis [not] the Season! *

To continue on my Visual Assignment quest, I did a one star worthy assignment today from the ds106 Assignment Bank.  I randomly chose the assignment, Winterize It!, which requires the winterizing of a photo from the summer.

I wanted to make it very realistic, so I googled how to add snow to a photo.  A set of directions popped up to use GIMP, which I already had, so I decided to follow those.  Unfortunately, after about 30 minutes of creating layers and screening them over the original photo, the end result wasn’t what I wanted, so I scratched all that.

Instead, I  opened the photo in Picasa which then lead me to open it in Picnik.  Picnik allowed me to add Santa hats to each of the people in the photo.  Here’s the original photo:

And this is what it looked like after I added the Santa hats:

To find a much easier way of adding snow, I googled adding snow to a photo again, and looked down further.  I stumbled upon a website, Lunapic, that does it for you once you upload your photo.  After that, I saved it to my computer and uploaded it to Flickr.

Although it turned out much faker than I originally wanted, it gets the point across and after failing in GIMP, I just wanted it to be done!

Create an assignment: Winterize it!

The idea for this assignment came from the environment around me! It has clearly started to get colder and the christmas music has started to make its appearance.  I thought the perfect assignment would be to take an old photo, preferably one from the summer or spring and convert it into a winter themed photo, snowman and all!!!

To create the example for this assignment I found a picture that was taken over the summer of my friend and I.
Pre Assignment Winterization
I
then uploaded the picture onto picmonkey.com and used such editing tools as winterizer, where it added snow, gloves, hats, and a snowman to the picture. I then adjusted the color of the photo to make it look colder. I did this by lowering the “temperature” of the photo, which can be done under the color edit link in picmonkey.com.  The end product was a winterized summer photo that now prepares me slightly for winter!
