In Popeye’s next part of his adventure, he encounters a major obstacle that was shaped in the form of a web assignment. How dangerous right? The web assignment that immediately came into my mind is the “Storytelling Within the Web” and revisiting this assignment provided some great creativity for me.
For this assignment, I had to revisit the X-Ray Goggles, which I had a really fun time playing with the last time I used it. This was my main tool in editing my chosen webpage to match my project’s theme and my specific situation Popeye is dealing with. Since I was already scrolling through CNN, I decided to go ahead and use the CNN website as my basis because I really liked the simplicity and style of the site. Other sites I visited were too complex and had way too many effects and unnecessary add-ons.
Here’s the original site:
And here is my edited version:
As you can see, there is a global spinach crisis where farmers have had enough with consumers pushing them to their outmost limits, especially Popeye. The farmers have had it with the constant demand and persistence and their reasonings of not being able to produce enough has gone way over the line. Violence is a very possible outcome if demands are not met.
The first digital media to start off my Narrative is a VideoAssignment that I created and added to the assignment bank. The assignment was to create a short video about a minute thirty seconds to two minute’s long about a character. Give the viewer an idea about what this character is like using about 3-5 short video clips.
I decided to describe the Grinch. This is the first media source in my narrative and I used this project to introduce one of the two characters into the story.
Next I imported the video clips into iMovie where I could trim them and drag them into the order that I desired.
I then uploaded the video to Youtube and my video assignment was complete.

The next assignment introduced into my story is one that I created and added to the assignment bank. It is an audio assignment worth 3 stars. The idea was to create an audio assignment where you would take a famous line from a movie, and remix it, to tell an entirely new story. This can be kind of tricky though, you want to make sure you have a good balance between old material and new material. You donât want to change it so much that you cannot even tell where it originated, but you want it to be changed enough so that it tells a completely new story.
I took the popular line from Elf âI passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel.â I remixed it to a new location to introduce the story to a new adventure by saying âBuddy walked all the way from the North Pole, traveling through the seven layers of the candy cane forest, past the sea of swirly-twirly gum drops and then hiked up the mountain to the front door of the Grinchâs cave.â
This line leads up to the rest of the story by setting the location of the remainder and majority of the story at the Grinchâs cave on the top of the mountain.
I created this recording using sound cloud, and recorded myself telling the story directly.
The next assignment I also created. This assignment is a web assignment worth 4 stars, involving a very popular book The Guinness Book of World Records.  This assignment can be used for more than just a story about a character, but really anything, maybe its a story about a record you always wanted to break, or something that would be funny to find in the book. My hope with creating this assignment was that there would be no limitations to what could be done with it, just one guideline..you have to use the book.
I remixed the webpage using X-Ray Goggles, to create the longest snowball fight ever. It latest 6 hours and it was between Buddy the Elf and the Grinch, in Whoville.
Close out a story in a five second GIF. Another assignment that I created under animated GIFâs, worth 4 stars. This assignment has two big elements. Not only is it important to create a GIF, but to also tell a story. This assignment can be tricky, because it is hard to find a video clip that can also be universal and fit your story.
I used the video clip at the very end of the movie Santa Clause 2. I knew I wanted to use that scene because I remember doing a video assignment with it previous in the semester and that clip really stuck out to me as just a good way to end a story.
This assignment can be fairly simple if you can find a good GIF generator, I used Make A GIFÂ and I would recommend using this website or another one similar to it.
The final assignment is a design assignment worth 3 stars, that asks you to create a promotional poster for a movie or story. I created a promotional poster to promote my new story called Elf 2: Buddy Meets the Grinch. I added in what would be my favorite scene, a snowball fight between Buddy and the Grinch that actually made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
The second part of Winnie’s journey involves a very serious crisis in the form of a web assignment. For this, I revisited Storytelling Within the Web and made a few edits to the front page of CNN.
As you can tell, there this a worldwide honey crisis which has been brought on by the bees who have had enough of bears and humans stealing their most precious product. Most worrisome, is that they have stated they will resort to violence if their demands are not met. This could bring a little forecasting about things to come.
For this assignment, I used the X-Ray Goggles by Hackasaurus to edit the html of the webpage and add in my own content. The page originally had another breaking news story so it fit well with the sense of urgency that I wanted to display for this assignment.
Bunny Colvin’s spent most of his life working for the BPD. But after whole Hamsterdam fiasco and the ending of the Tilghman Middle School project, it’s time to go job hunting yet again. I used Bunny’s linkedin page that I created for him to make a sort of resume, based off this assignment. I made sure to think of all his job positions that were mentioned in the show. The only one I couldn’t put down was the hotel security job because of the lack of a company name. Considering how poorly that job ended though, it might not look so well on a list of past experiences. It was also fun to think of Bunny’s skills as not only a former police officer, but in what he used to handle the corner kids as well.
Ziggy attended a resume workshop in prison and made a resume even though he’s got a life sentence and will most likely not put it to good use. He shared his resume as well as his thoughts on while it is utterly useless on Tumblr, Google+, Facebook, and Twitter.
I did the assignment “Create Your Dream Vacation” where you imagine your vacation and put it together on Pinterest. Â Never having an account there before meant I had no experience at all with “pinning” things onto a virtual bulletin board. Since this is becoming material for my character who is on her first trip to […]
For my final project for DS106, I chose to use the character George “Double G” Glekas from The Wire Season 2. George Glekas is a member of The Greeks and the owner of Pyramid Inc., the front for The Greek’s smuggling operations. I thought it would be interesting (and highly appropriate) to delve into George’s professional background, since he is a businessman.
In the DS106 assignments I was looking for something that dealt with resumes or LinkedIn, however, I couldn’t find any relevant assignments. Instead, I created a Web assignment called Character Resume (4.5 stars) in which you use a platform such as LinkedIn, or create a webpage or Word document of a character’s “fake” resume. I felt that fellow and future DS106ers would find this handy if they wanted to tell a story or give a picture of a character’s past.
To complete this assignment, I created a new LinkedIn account under the character’s name, George Glekas. Using the user-friendly profile editor, I added a personal profile, work history, educational background, interests, skills, and languages to support my character. A wiki page for The Wire mentioned George had previously worked in San Diego, which I chose to include on his resume. To support my narrative, I included that George was also formerly a stevedore in Greece, which is how he learned so much about port operations.
In addition, I added a profile picture of George Glekas, and made the header background a beautiful picture of Greece.
Hiya! For part of the final project, I decided to make a Pinterest for Beatrice. One of the web assignments was to make a pinterest board for her dream vacation. Now Beatrice works very hard so I decided to pick something that was still in the states for her, and DisneyWorld is a great option. So from there I just found some good tips and trick on what to pack while flying down to Orlando. Luckily there is transportation provided to and from the Disney owned resorts, so I didn’t included a rental car. I picked Animal Kingdom Lodge for their hotel, partially because I’ve always wanted to stay there. Then I went through the 4 main parks in DisneyWorld; Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot. These are personally my favorite parks and I pictured Beatrice and her family going during the winter so the water parks are closed during this time. Then I picked some tips and tricks on how to navigate each park. I really like planning a vacation using pinterest! It was fun to think like Beatrice and figure out where she might like to have travelled. And with her kids too. That was my main point was to plan something would be family friendly. Â You can check the board out over here!
This week was quite overwhelming, so I didn’t have much time to get a lot of the assignments done. My phone has water damage, so it hasn’t been working which has made it difficult to take pictures and keep up with DS106 on-the-go, which I usually do so I’m able to plan my daily creates throughout the day or keep it in mind. I’ve also had midterms on midterms and papers out the wahoo so life was a bit tougher this week.
I was a bit bummed when we couldn’t listen to our radio shows this past week, but it’ll be nice to listen to them this week since it seems like it was ages ago that we made it! I’m excited to hear all of our contributions put together again. It’ll also be fun to hear everyone else’s radio shows and reflect on them in next weeks weekly summary.
Daily Creates:
I was only able to complete two daily creates this week because of the busy schedule I had, so here they are:
“If I could change anything in my past, it would probably be a collection of the amount of times I didnât do something because I was too afraid to. I was a HUGE homebody growing up, and up until about junior year of high school, I would make up excuses for sleepovers, overnights at camp, vacations with my friends, just because I was too afraid to be away from my mom and my house for the night. This fear is also the reason I didnât take college applications seriouslyâ because I didnât want to ever be away from home. I was so lucky my grades were good enough to get into Mary Washington, however Iâve still neglected to do a lot of fun things because of silly fears. Hopefully a few years from now I wonât have to think twice when asked if I want to do something I would enjoy, and Iâll just do it.“
