NOT 4 DOGS (Internet Storytelling)

Okay, so, even though I’m really happy with my finished product for this assignment, getting to this point of satisfaction was NOT fun.

Homecoming weekend was this weekend, so after being awakened far too early on my Saturday morning by alums standing on Ball Circle singing jaunty tunes about beer (this was the actual song they were singing; I’m not even joking),  decided I should get started on my biggest project of the week.

Gathering up all of my electronics and coziest jacket, I went and sat in the sunlight and began. The Mozilla Goggles thankfully weren’t hard to learn how to use (and I had no idea Mozilla offered so many awesome web design tools/apps!), so the hardest part for me was to decide what sort of site I wanted to re-design.

I’m a huge fan of IMDB and LOVE to browse message boards of movies I’ve just finished watching (especially if the films have deep, whacky, open-to-interpretation endings and I’m confused and emotionally distraught and have to have someone explain the details or plot elements before I drive myself insane), but I wanted to work on a site that wasn’t provided in the examples for this week, so I decided on Buzzfeed–particularly, their Life section.

Buzzfeed is a super popular website with 20-somethings, and I myself spend far too much time taking their quizzes instead of sleeping. Therefore, I knew the website would be familiar to my audience, and the layout is rich with fun colors, text, and pictures that I could easily edit.

The twist was: instead of being aimed at humans, this Buzzfeed Life page would be aimed at pets! Featuring articles such as “Best DIY Exercises for Those Days When Your Human Won’t Take You for a Walk” and “Top Fashion Trends from the Latest Westminster Kennel Show,” the page was going to be über popular with humankind’s favorite friends.

I had half the page coded when…boom.

Or, rather–no boom. Nothing at all, actually. My entire screen went dark, Mozilla WebMaker Goggles stopped functioning, and I lost all of my work. I mentally debated screaming and throwing my laptop across the field, but decided against that, because there was a lovely family playing Frisbee nearby that didn’t need to see such a tantrum.

Rather than moan and groan and try and figure out what happened (I still don’t know what happened; I was at 74% charge, other apps would work, and the Mozilla Goggles just went kaput), I went inside to have a snack and take a breather.

I was too frustrated to try and re-do my Buzzfeed page (R.I.P. Buzzfeed Life For Pets 2014-2014), so I tried to think of something a bit simpler but still fun. I was inspired by the amusing Amazon.com Wolf T-Shirt reviews and decided to keep with my dog/pet theme and write a critique of some online item. Instead of choosing an actual analog product, though, I searched pet apps.

One of the top results was DoggyDatez. I thought it was a cute, unique way for dogs to meet other dogs in the neighborhood/town/city while their humans got to socialize, too, but then I tried thinking from a dog’s point-of-view. Sure, meeting new animals is a blast–especially for canines–but I would be mad if my mom or dad’s attention was suddenly on another person or their smartphone instead of me during our walks!

Therefore, my altered DoggyDatez: REVIEWED BY ACTUAL DOGS page was born.

DoggyDatez 1

DoggyDatez 2

If you can’t read the text super well, I apologize. My screen was being troublesome, so I had to zoom out, but hopefully you can zoom in on the screencaps or check out the live version.

I began by re-writing the description. Each detail/perk that the app company described I re-described as an angry pooch! Therefore, traveling to all sorts of different territories overseas or in different states (NO PLANES PLEASE says every dog ever) or marking/labeling territory with the touch of a finger instead of pee became cause for concern and sometimes outrage. The dogs have spoken, and they clearly prefer dog parks where THEIR socialization is the main focus–not their human’s–or one-on-one play time and fetch with their favorite person in the world AKA their owner.

Then, I edited user reviews by giving each Internet savvy dog a personality and username to match.

The first was a handsome, smooth–or trying to be smooth–perhaps over-eager Rottweiler that liked to lay on the charm.

Username “rott weiler.” What a ham.

The next was a precious, overactive golden retriever who was just really upset that her momma wasn’t paying as much attention to her because of this app. We are the center of our pets’ worlds, after all, so we should give them as much love and care as possible, right? Fetch > smartphone apps.

This shot really speaks to username “GOLDY RETRIEVE”‘s personality.

The last user to review happened to be the very same poodle with whom username rott weiler was so smitten. Clearly, the feelings weren’t reciprocated, and she officially prefers meeting dogs in person to “online dating.”

So much sass from “LittleMissPerfectPoodle.”

I then fiddled with details like the title/subtitles of the app (that also act as the title and subtitle for this post) and Compatibility.

The actual editing took forever, because X-Ray Goggles kept crashing/messing up on me, again! I’m not sure if there’s something wrong with my computer or it was just the app, but some text segments appeared completely deleted/empty after I’d just added them while others were in the wrong place or duplicated for no apparent reason. Maybe I should write Mozilla and let them know the Goggles have bugs. Do those crash/error reports ever actually help IT services and coders, anyway? I’ve always wondered.
Frustrations and app crashing aside, I had a lot of fun with this project. I’m such a dog lover that looking for material for this edit and my short-lived Buzzfeed page was a blast. The voices I have in my head for each dog are pretty funny, too, but I’ll let your imaginations run wild with those details rather than provide them, this time. (;

Enjoy & thanks!

For this assignment I made a fake Facebook and Tweet for George Washington. I thought it was kind of funny because I go to Mary Washington.

This assignment was so fun! I used a program called Classroom tools and created both fake social media pages. I used a quote I found about his mother, Mary Washington for his post and an encouraging note to the Red Coats as a tweet. George is most associated with independence after the Revolutionary war.

It so interesting to sit down and think about the revolution social media. We think of it as second nature but to people in the past it is a foreign/non-existent tool.

I think that if George Washington was alive today he would not have used Twitter or Facebook to often but he would use it to occasional talk about the war. It was such a significant part of his life and lead to his presidency. He would probably tweet out information and encouragements to keep moving toward independence.

Media relations have revolved around social media. It would be interesting to go back and time and see what the figure heads of our past would tweet.

If Columbus Had Social Media

I attempted the What They Might Have Done in Social Media (3 stars) Web Assignment. The assignment was to make fake social network accounts for a historical figure.

I made a Facebook account and Twitter posting for Christopher Columbus. His Facebook account outlines his struggle of finding funding for his expedition to North America. His family and friends section contains his wife, kids, and sponsors of his voyages. There’s even a nod to his problems in home life. He posts about the birth of his second son, however that son was born out of wedlock. His wife then furiously comments on the post. His cover photo reflects his love of his three ships he originally left on the trip with.

You can see the Facebook Account here.

The twitter post describes him bragging about the fact that he made it to what he thought was the West Indies. He makes a nod to the fact that he was denied so many times before he was ok’d for the voyage.

If he had access to social media it definitely would have been easier to spread the word about him discovering the new world. For that matter maybe if the natives had access as well he wouldn’t have made the mistake of wrongly assuming where he was. He also would be able to live tweet during the long trip to pass the time.

Fake Twitter page

To make them I used Fakebook and Twister to create fake accounts. From there I just inputted information I researched about Christopher Columbus and added pictures as relevant.

My Interesting Character- 4 Stars

In this assignment, we had to create a page for any character that we chose. For me it was tricky at first because I never have been on Pinterest before. However, after playing around with the website it was easy to understand how to create a page. The challenging part with this assignment was trying to figure what character I wanted to create a page for. After I figured out that it was very simple to pin images to the page and create the Interesting Character Page.

After a few minutes of thinking, I pretty much knew who I wanted to use for this assignment. A couple weeks ago I saw a movie with this character in it with two of my good friends. I thought it was a really good movie, my friends and I had a great time. The assignment doesn’t just remind me of the movie, it also reminds me of the great weekend we had, it’s hard to see them since we are all at different colleges. However, when we do get together it’s always a fun time.

Good Luck Guessing!!!

Guess My Character – 4 Stars

I decided to do this assignment again because I love using pinterest and because I love guessing games! Here is my board on pinterest, and even though I pretty much gave the character away because they are in the pins, there is still a possibility of 2 characters, which one do you think it is? I am still working on trying to use the google X-ray on this board, but for some reason I cannot get it to work but I don’t want this to be late so here it is thus far! Beginning phase and the link to it.

X-Ray Google Storytelling 3-star

Here is the original webpage! Untitled

I decided to change the listing I found for a house for rent on Lake Landor (not even sure where this is in Fredericksburg, VA) and make a ridiculously cheap house for sale on Lake Anna. ;) I changed key words in the description to associate this with Lake Anna and a $15 house for sale instead of a $1595 house for rent (monthly price) I even changed the first picture to a picture of a random house on a Lake Anna Reality site. The work on this really wasn’t tooo hard all it really required was to install the X-ray bookmark and then use it on a site and I decided to use this instead of a story or anything else because I did want to keep it simple so I couldn’t mess it up!

What Benjamin Franklin Would Have Said on Social Media- 3 Stars

For this assignment, we had create fake social media accounts for a historical figure.  The process to create this was pretty simple and fun. For the Fakebook, I posted my historical figure’s bio, about his family, and date of birth. I also posted a profile picture and and a cover picture behind the profile picture. The Twister Tool was very simple as well. All I had to do was be a little creative with his “handle” and the tweet he would tweet out to his followers. I wanted the posts to be funny and clever and I hope I accomplished that.

It took me awhile to think of an historical figure, I decided to go with Benjamin Franklin. There is no particular reason why I chose him, I just thought he did so many great things in his life, and it would be easy to post them on social media. I also thought that his major life events would be easy to tweet out but also have a funny twist to them as well.

Dream VaCay -3 stars

I just had to do this assignment when I saw it! I have always wanted to go to Ireland, mostly because I am mostly Irish as far as my heritage. Also I know the landscape all over is amazing and even though it rains a lot during certain times of the year (summer for the most part) it seems like such a beautiful place to visit! Oh, and I love pinterest!! So here is my board for Ireland! This is a very possible trip one day for me and my mom to take, we have been looking at trying to take it ever since I was old enough to remember traveling to different places. The money is going to be the major thing to save up and have not only for travel expenses and/or if we decide to pay to go along with a group tour type thing, but also to buy mementos from the trip. We will be waiting until I am 21, even though the legal drinking age is 18. One place I really want to see is Dublin, not only because the Guinness Storehouse is there, but also for the famous soda bread and to visit the landmarks like the Dublin Castle. The Brazen Head (its a pub) is also in Dublin and is the oldest pub in Ireland dating back to 1198! It is nice because we do not have to learn a different language, even though there will be a definite accent and some words may be different than what we are used to. We have our passports which would be another requirement. There are no vaccines or anything that we would need in order to travel there or anything special that we would need. I am so ready to go explore Ireland!

So, October was kind of a bust

For my second web assignment I decided to do the Storify It assignment. The prompt was to use Storify to pull clips from around the web to tell an original story, or tell a story that is well known. As I am currently in the process of binge watching my favorite show ever, Gilmore Girls, I decided to make a Storify about how it was recently put on Netflix and I got lost all month in binge watching it.

For this Storify, I decided to start with the news that Gilmore Girls was being released, followed by a link to what the show is. I included clips from the show, the theme song, gifs and fun Buzzfeed-esque lists as well. I wanted it to show the comprehensive story of how how great this show is, and how much people love it- which is why I included tweets. I also focused on the theme of binge watching, because I know I am probably not the only one who clocked too much time on Netflix this month.

I’ve mentioned before how much I love Storify. I’ve never actually created a story using it before, but I really love the way it’s set up- incredibly intuitive and easy to use. I’ve been really impressed with it so far.

Facebook and Twitter for… JFK!

Original Assignment (3 Stars)

For this assignment, I chose the historical figure of our 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Turns out, JFK seemed pretty hip to the social media scene back in the 1960’s.

While creating the Fakebook page, I utilized wikipedia and other online pages to gather all the information I thought was acceptable, ranging from his siblings, when and where he was born, to his coworkers and significant figures during his presidency. Kennedy had a significant amount of siblings, and I was surprised by the number actually. Most of the pictures were automatic when I typed them in into the Friend’s block, while I had to change some of them because of the inaccuracy of the given photo. I had trouble uploading a cover photo for Kennedy, as it would glitch out the page and would lag/freeze it as well. Here is what the page looks like:

Screen Shot 2014-10-26 at 4.57.24 PM

Link to JFK’s Fakebook Page

The Twister page was very easy, as typing in “JFK” gave me his profile pic and a background image as well. Oddly enough, typing in “John F. Kennedy” into that space didn’t give me anything at all, which was strange to me. For his first tweet, I simply chose his arguably most famous tweet, from his 1961 Presidential Inaugural Address.

Screen Shot 2014-10-26 at 4.47.16 PM

I think social media for JFK during his time would’ve been very active, given the circumstances he had to be involved in, highlighted by the high tensions of the Cold War with the Soviet Union. Situations like Vietnam, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Space Race, and others would definitely have JFK tweeting and posting like crazy.
