Storytelling Within the Web – NYT Edition

New Webpage

When I first looked over this assignment and noticed the option to code I was a bit worried about how hard this would really be. However, after following the simple instructions on the Mozilla page, I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of changing a web page. I thought for quite a while on what site I should change and how to change it. I then thought of all those ridiculous National Enquirer headlines I used to see and decided to apply them to a reputable source such as the New York Times. In the end, I was happy with the way things turned out.

Making Of:

I started of by going to the X-Ray Goggles page by Mozilla and followed the instructions and learned fairly quickly. I then uploaded the application to the Bookmarks Toolbar on Firefox and went to the New York times page. I then clicked on a few headers and pictures and simply added what I was replacing them with. I then clicked the publish icon which gave me the final results.

Storytelling Within The Web-3 Stars

In this assignment,  we had to use the X-Ray Goggles Software and change a website to tell a different story. The process to create to do this was a lot easier now that I understand how to use X-Ray Goggles. I was able to take an image from Google and place as the front pic of the NBA site. Then I was able to change what is said on the front article.

All the NBA has talked about this off-season is LeBron James heading back to Cleveland, and the trade they made to get Kevin Love. To be honest I am getting sick of hearing about LeBron coming back to Cleveland. They are also talking about how the Miami Heat are going to bounce back after losing LeBron. Everything about the NBA has to do with LeBron’s decision, so I decided to make the front cover of the NBA website about my Celtics. I talked about the bright future that the Celtics are going to have.

Jason Bourne History Maps Story

Screenshot (13)

Link to Google Maps Page

For this assignment, I made a bit of a stretch in terms of a literary figure but I thought it would be a cool idea to do a history map on Jason Bourne from the book/movie series. It’s well known that the storyline involves plenty of globe trotting so it fit perfectly with what I was trying to convey. In particular, I chose the final part of the trilogy called Bourne Ultimatum where he makes his way through Europe and eventually ends the storyline in New York.

Making Of:

The completion of this assignment wasn’t to complicated but there were a few snags. You must first go to Google Maps and click on My Maps. There you can create different destinations in the order that they happened. I also clicked on the description icon and added a storyline for why the character was at that location. The tricky bit was including New York which is not accessible by car so I could not use the directions tool. I simply created a line to show a flight path from Tangier to NYC.

Three Moon Wolf Shirt

I did this four star assignment.  I thought the original shirt comments were amazing. I couldn’t think of anything else that would be that good. I just go a new pup. She loves her crate. So I went and made a comment on how great her crate is and how it keeps her out of […]

My Dream Vacation

imagesG1YE04YK

I chose to complete the Create Your Own Dream Vacation on Pinterest  Web Assignment (three stars). You can see my board containing the pins I collected about my Italian trip here.

I really hope a trip to Italy will happen for me someday. My dad always said we would go after I graduated from college. Its so close now, I just hope we actually go through with the idea. Well to help make it a reality here’s some information to consider while planning.

  • Should plan to go in beginning of May while still in off-season
  • Stay for a week and maybe a couple days more
  • Airfare even if near offseason can be up to 600 dollars
    • Fly in to Rome to save money
  • Start from Rome, then to Florence, then Venice
  • Make sure have appropriate Italian currency, because credit cards not widely accepted there
  • Use train system to travel after arriving to reduce cost and not be responsible for a rented car
  • Dress more upscale than traditional tourist to reduce pickpocketing in major cities
  • Shopping stores end in mid afternoon, while dinner is served after 8pm
  • Visit Coliseum, art museums, take time to enjoy non-touristy natural beauty of the land, ride in gondola
  • Experience real Italian cuisine, try new things (not just what I know of American counterparts)
  • Learn enough Italian to get around before hand. Not overly so, but at least the top 50 words or phrases
  • Make sure our passports and visas are order
  • Have Fun!

Storytelling Within the Web: Repurposed Faucet

I knew from the start that for my Storytelling Within the Web assignment that I wanted to re-purpose an ordinary object into something unusual and completely unrelated.  I searched Amazon.com under the “Today’s Deals” section until I came across an object that I thought I could re-purpose, a sink faucet.

webstory original

When I first chose this item, it was not for any particular reason except for that fact that it looked rather odd for a sink faucet.  After staring at the picture for a few more moments, I realize that the faucet reminded me of some kind of fiendish device a dentist might use to perform surgery on a patient’s mouth.  For these reasons, I decided this would be the Amazon item that I would edit!  As there is essentially no self-dental care products on the market apart from toothbrushes and floss, this product intends to give those who are unable to afford regular dental checkups a cheaper alternative for emergency dental care.  Using the X-ray Goggles app, I began making subtle edits to the product’s Amazon.com page.

Notable changes I made include: the product’s name, descrption, and category it is located in.  Here is the finished edit of the product page:

Red Sox make the World Series again!

The Red Sox had a slow start this year but really were able to turn it around. They overcame a rough season, trading away players, and injury to make it to the World Series against the San Francisco Giants. It was definitely a rough year but it is exciting to see them up in the series 2-1 against the Giants. It would be really cool to see the Sox win back to back World Series. What’s that you say? The Royals are in the World Series? Then why did I find this?

Red Sox World Series

Alright you guys caught me. I actually was doing the Storytelling within the Web Assingment. The Red Sox were having a woeful year so I decided to fix up the page a little to cheer myself up. Using the X-ray Goggles tool I was able to change the text and images. It was a little bit tougher than I thought it would be actually. Changing text was simple because all I had to was delete certain words and add new ones but for images I had to figure out what mlb.com used for coding and switch. An example was when I was switching the the starting pitcher from Jason Vargas to Clay Buchholz I had to switch the code so that the image would display Clay Buchholz instead. Also when changing the Royals logo to the Red Sox I had to figure out what they used for the image code. Overall it was a fun assignment but definitely challenged me. If only the Red Sox had actually done well this year then I would have to change websites to make them good but oh well I can’t complain since they won last year.

Down below is what the page originally looked like.Real World Series

So there were quite a few things I had to change. Obviously every time it said Royals I had to switch that to Red Sox as well as pitchers name, logos, the radio station, the video thumb nail as well as additional things within the paragraph. You can view the whole new page below as well as the original.

PacMan the Ultimate Maze Runner

In this Web Assignment, we were to edit a current webpage in a way to create a new story. I chose to edit the webpage for the movie The Maze Runner on IMDb.com. I decided to turn the webpage to PacMan being the focus of the movie. I kept Maze Runner as the title of the movie, because it fit the idea of PacMan perfectly. The webpage now tells the story of a new movie in theaters based on the popular game PacMan. It describes him as the hero of the movie trying to escape the maze he’s been trapped in by the four ghosts. The plot follows his quest to retrieve all the dots and collect the cherry, which is powerful enough to set him free.

To edit the page I used X-Ray Goggle. I really like this tool its very user friendly and makes it simple to change a webpage. Using the goggles I changed the movie poster to a picture of the PacMan game. I also edited the summary of the movie, as well as the director to be the company who produced the game and the directors to the game’s creator and console. Finally I edited the cast list to reflect the characters of PacMan as playing themselves in the movie.

Pinterest Dream Vacation

Screenshot (12)

My dream trip is to the islands of Indonesia. During my freshman year I took a class called Modern Indonesian History and loved the class and professor. Since then I have grown a fondness for the country and would be my dream vacation.

Realistically, I think this trip could happen but more than likely while I’m still young. A roundtrip ticket is about $1200 plus hotels and other expenses. Another thing to take note would be the 23 hr plane ride which would be miserable. Indonesia also requires a visa on arrival which would be a little bit of a hassle not not too bad.

Another decision would have to be choosing where in Indonesia I would go. Obviously the famous capital Jakarta and the resort Bali, but I’m sure places such as Sumatra are just as incredible.

3 Stars – Dream Vacation

Favorite Musician Gif (Tutorial)

Before we begin, choose the GIF application you are most comfortable with. Photoshop is recommended, but for those who are not familiar with making animated gifs, I will guide you through with the simplest method. Next, think about who your favorite musician is, and then find your favorite video of theirs that is on Youtube (Best quality, HD if possible). And now we begin.

Step One

Screen shot 2014-10-25 at 3.13.46 PM

Once you have found your video, type gif in front of the url link exactly how it is in the screenshot above. Hit enter, and it will automatically take you to the Youtube GIF creator page.

Step Two

Screen shot 2014-10-25 at 3.15.58 PM

You will now configure your GIF, selecting a portion of the video you want to use. Then drag the slider to adjust the length you would like your GIF to be (I usually keep mine under 5 seconds). Once you have adjusted both sliders, the screen will then playback the GIF over and over according to the settings you have chosen. If you are not satisfied with the outcome, keep playing with the sliders to your liking, and then click on the green box below to “CREATE GIF”.

Step Three

Screen shot 2014-10-25 at 3.16.39 PM

You will then receive the url for your animated GIF and options to share on different social media platforms. In this case, we want to upload it to our WordPress blog. There are a few extra steps to achieve this, so pay close attention. Click on the Switch to GIF button and then right click to save image.

Step Four

Screen shot 2014-10-25 at 3.24.52 PM

Login to your WordPress account and generate a new post. Click on “Add Media” and upload the gif image you have just downloaded. Finally, click “Insert into post”. You will notice the GIF won’t play in the post, but don’t fear, we will solve this with ease. Right click the GIF in your post and copy the url now that it is hosted on your blog. Now delete the image in your post.

Step Five

Screen shot 2014-10-25 at 3.32.11 PM

Click on the “Add Media” tab again, but this time you want to use the “Insert From URL” option. Insert into post, and BOOM, Done Deal!

Screen shot 2014-10-25 at 3.32.25 PM

And here is the final result once you click the Publish button on your blog. You have now created and added an Animated GIF to your blog. Congratulations!
