The game’s done gone and changed y’all…or has it?

Well hello again!  I hope everyone’s week three ended well.  This was a whirlwind week for me, with tons of assignments in all of my classes.  But I’m not here to talk about that.  I’m here to talk about The Wire and digital storytelling, so let’s get into it.

I guess I should start with the Kurt Vonnegut and Bryan Alexander pieces.  First the Kurt Vonnegut clip was not only a fresh take on looking at a story, but it was also hilarious!  Being a physics major, I have a certain appreciation (although sometimes certain level of apprehension) for graphs.  I have never thought to look at the progression of a story graphically.  When taking this approach, most stories really can be lumped into several categories, each having similar “curves” as Vonnegut calls them.

On to the assignments!!!

Season 1, episode #13: Sentencing

TripleTroll

I decided for this episode to use the “Triple Troll Quote” to sum up the season 1 finale.  This quote and picture, in my opinion at least, sum up where the show is headed from here.  What I mean by that is this: In this episode, we see McNulty and Bunk in the courtroom where Avon’s crew is being dismantled and sentenced to prison.  On the surface it appears that the drug empire is on the ropes, but as the finale montage continues, we see the drug trade just as robust as ever, albeit controlled by some new blood.  It appears at the episodes end that the drug game has not changed…just got more fierce.  In addition, we see the return of Omar, up to his same old tricks, and just as charming as possible.  The reason I attributed this to McNulty is that in this episode, McNulty has this aura of “what the hell did I do?” after the sentencing of Avon’s gang.  He comes to realize that all of the work they did, all of the arrests that were made and the dealers taken off of the streets, not much has actually changed.  The drug trafficking is just as prevalent and the body count is not going to drop drastically.

Season 2, Episode 1: Ebb Tide

For this episode, I used the “What They Might Have Done in Social Media” web assignment.  This episode was a new start for several characters, but a new start is not always a good thing.  McNulty is kicked to the one place he did not want to go: Marine Division.  He is now a lowly officer, choking on diesel fumes and salt spray.  I used FakeBook and the twister web app to crete fake profiles for McNulty, and had him tweet this from his new job on the force.

Season 2, Episode 3: Collateral Damage

OmarCommunity

For this assignment, I decided to try my hand at creating a design assignment.  This was an assignment that we had discussed at one of our “ds106 Lunches”.  I am a huge fan of the show “Community” and the moment Omar walked on screen in “The Wire”, I recognized him from the role shown above.  Every time I see Omar in The Wire, I can’t help but compare him to the biology professor above.  The actual GIF was created the same way as all of my others have been: I ripped the video from YouTube, processed it using StreamClip, and created the actual GIF in Gimp.
Daily Creates for the Week:
Again, I fell behind on daily creates this week.  I only did two of the three.  But I think the two I did are REALLY good.  Or maybe I’m just pandering…so who knows.
On 9/10/14, I did the lune poem creation.  I explained the reasoning behind this in the actual post here, but I’ll post the image again below.

On 9/12/14, I did the favorite mathematical expression assignment, which is explained further here!
Take care, and I’ll see you all next week!

McNulty’s Tweet: F*** Rawls!!!

I had posted this in my weekly posts, but I wanted this to be filed separately in the assignments category, you know, so it’s easier to find and all.

Capturing the Essence of D’Angelo Barksdale

For my second DS106 assignment this week, I decided to choose the Web assignment “You’re a Pinteresting Character” and portray The Wire character, D’Angelo Barksdale, using Pinterest.

Although I’m currently not active on Pinterest, I do have an account and am familiar with the process of “pinning” images, links, quotes, etc. to virtual “boards.” I love the concept of Pinterest–it’s like having an infinite amount of bulletin boards categorized by topics and being able to compile information/ideas for those boards. It’s the ultimate brainstorming and planning tool. I chose to make a board about D’Angelo Barksdale because I felt that (1) he had a distinct style, (2) there are many objects that can be tied to his character, and (3) he is one of the characters in the show that is undergoing a transformation or change of heart.

I used Google images to find images of D’Angelo Barksdale so that I could match what he wears in the show with pins. D’Angelo’s signature style consists of: beanies, his leather jacket, large t-shirts with designs, his black turtleneck sweater, and baggy button-up shirts. Some of the objects I connected to his character were: a beeper, a payphone, a King chess piece, a stack of cash, and a glass of liquor (as he is often drinking at Orlando’s). The places I connected to D’Angelo were: Baltimore (the setting for The Wire) and the courtroom. I also pinned some quotes that I think demonstrate D’Angelo’s new attitude well:

“When someone attacks your kingdom, you do not flee, you show them why it is your kingdom.”
– Olan Rogers

“And now I’ll do what’s best for me”

“You don’t ever have to feel guilty about removing toxic people from your life. It doesn’t matter whether someone is a relative, romantic interest, employer, childhood friend, or a new acquaintance–You don’t have to make room for people who cause you pain or make you feel small. It’s one thing if a person owns up to their behavior and makes an effort to change. But if a person disregards your feelings, ignores your boundaries, and continues to treat you in a harmful way, they need to go.” – Danielle Koepke

SuperStar! When YouTube get’s hacked!

For this particular assignment I decided to choose a YouTube video that highlighted people who might be considered “not-so-talented” and make them into superstars, through a modified American Idol Video.

The above link is to my Web Assignment discussing the use of the two primary colors red and blue in Season 2 Episode 1.  I have created a Timeline JS going through 11 photographs taken from the episode.  Each photo has been time stamped with it’s corresponding time slot in the episode.  Red and blue symbolize so much in this episode.  In each scene of red there has been a link with disobedience, or crime, or death.  In each scene of blue, we have seen a link to the police and to the some what “good guys”.  Not everyone in blue is a good guy but each have some form of goodness in them regardless if that is due to their dedication to their job or their unknown innocence of what really was going on….

Blogging

Part 1

The first media I chose to add I got the idea from the assignment bank using a web assignment called Storytelling within the web, except I didn’t do this exactly like the assignment says.  Instead of altering an already existing webpage, I wanted to make my own, so I thought of making a new blog site.

Using WordPress, I went to my main dashboard and created an entirely new blog site, which I titled adventures of red, just to go along with my story.  Knowing that I wanted her to live in New York,

I used a  New york skyline picture as the header,
new-york-skyline-2013-at-night

then typed up a new blog post.
blog post

To make the story a little creepy, I wanted someone to leave a strange comment on her blog.  I couldn’t think of how I could make the comment look like someone else’s so I sent a comment myself to see how it would look.
blog comment original

I realized I definitely didn’t want the comment to be from me, so I got the idea to change it on Microsoft Word.  To do this I uploaded the image of my comment.

I found a picture of a wolf to use as the icon
85-wolf

The uploaded and sized it down to fit over top of my picture.  Next, to change the name and time stamp I simply inserted a text box and found a color similar to the comment background to use as the filler color for the text box.  Then I changed the ont size and placed it on top.

Part 3 | Part 4 | Final Project

Final DS106 Project: Coach Boone’s Back

COACH HERMAN BOONE (Remember the Titans, 2000)

August 1971
Coach Herman Boone stood on the edge on the field, pensively staring up at the chipped, yellow field goal post. The sun made his eyes burn, so he turned and strode confidently back to the bench.

As a newly integrated, high school football team, the TC Williams Titans had little hope for a bright season. They could barely run a play without an argument ensuing, much less navigate a successful play. “We can do it,” he would say, but intolerance was prevailing. Coach was discouraged, but had thought of an idea to inspire his players.

At first, the t-shirts seemed like an unpopular decision. But, something had to be done. He had hoped they would inspire his players, and therefore, inspire the other students as well. With a passionate and genuine appeal, Coach Boone managed to inspire the young men with an unforgettable post-work out speech.

Truly inspired by his courage and determination to unite the members of his team, an anonymous person created a website to honor Coach Boone. Was it a student? Was it a parent? Was it the principal? Was it the mayor?

Did it even matter?

My D.S. Assignment #1: Create A Pinterest Board Of Your Dream Vacation!

Screen shot 2014-07-22 at 11.42.10 AM

http://www.pinterest.com/hayleyjoe/my-dream-vacation/

My dream vacation involves visiting three countries in Southeast Asia. I have been long awaiting the day that I save up enough money waitressing to travel abroad after I graduate! My plan is to start off in Thailand, then travel to Vietnam next, and finish my vacation in Indonesia. I would most likely spend 3 weeks in each country. I pinned a variety of sights and activities that I want to conquer while on my dream vacation including, visiting the Pink Beach on Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia; eating authentic Vietnamese spring rolls and pho, and visit the highly praised Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand.

In order to get the trip I want, I have to save up close to $5,000. Although the dollar is worth more than the currency used in the three aforementioned southeastern asian countries, travel expenses begin to accumulate. Airfare is the most expensive aspect (so book WAYYYY ahead of time), but attending certain park and other attractions can be pricey too. I would be backpacking and staying in hostels, so my accommodations would be relatively inexpensive. As for food, I am really looking forward to trying everything I can get my hands on. From street car vendors to glitzy restaurants, I want to try as many places as my budget will allow.

I will also need to get temporary holiday visas for each country, which I’ve heard is easy for Americans to receive. Unfortunately, that does not go both ways. For example, when I was in China last summer I spoke with several people who said it is extremely difficult for them to get visas to visit or vacation in the United States, which seems so unfair!

Pinteresting Character – GoT Edition

For this assignment, I chose to create a Pinterest board for Game of Thrones character Cersei Lannister. The ds106 assignment suggests posting pins of interest for the character and having others guess the character’s identity, but I wanted to caption the actual pictures that I pinned. The juxtaposition of Cersei’s power-hungry character against polite Pinterest comments was especially funny to me. Something that I tried to get away from was just pinning pictures of the cast of the television shows, but I wasn’t able to avoid it completely. So, when I would find pictures of the cast, I made a board called “family pictures” to make this site more authentic.
