3.5 Stars: In this Spanish video, Machu Picchu’s discovery, history, and being today is being analyzed by many members. When the translate comes up for the Spanish transcript during one small segment it looks like this…… nos encontramos en el sector de huayras tambos que está en la parte posterior de la montaña machu picchu / wiñay wayna y pata y la montaña machu picchu a este sitio convergían caminos tanto por el sector este de la montaña como también por el oeste tanto de la zona de 20 pata tuyo para marca y desde otro sector por el oeste ...

This was the Chinese version of the magical wolf shirt on Amazon. I translated this ad and the English translation is really weird honestly, I can’t quite follow all of it. For example, the “Suitable for: Too large” was an interesting translation. The version is “loose version” and it uses “3D effect printing, super vision effect” which just doesn’t sound right! How weird.

Browsing through possible assignments, I saw this one, and was immediately reminded of Google Translate Sings. It’s a fun channel that takes songs, runs them through Google Translate, and then translates them back into English to see what changes ensue (most of which are pretty humorous). I decided to run our national anthem through Google Translate. I first began by plugging in the English lyrics, and translating them to Armenian. I then translated the Armenian results to Norwegian, followed by Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and then back into English. The results are below. I think most of the major changes came ...

This assignment gave the task of entering a word into Google Translate that could not be properly translated to English. Link to Assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/google-translate-fail/ Stars: 3.5 Result: Cwtch (Welsh) to Hug (English) Process: With Google Translate as solid as it is, this was a bit more difficult than I expected. After testing a couple dozen words and phrases, I eventually remembered a word/expression from my time in Wales this past summer. While Cymru translates clearly to Wales, Cwtch is a Welsh idea with no perfect translation to English. Translate offers Hug as the only Enligh alternative, but that doesn’t quite ...

This assignment is to, using google translate, find something that does not translate well across languages and give some thought to it. Given the western theme of the class, I thought I might take it just a step further, and since many western saying are idioms, mix them up and see what I come out with after translating them to a few languages then back. I used sayings from Legend of America. Don’t name a cow you plan to eat. > Armenian >Corsican > Chinese > Hawaiian >English = I found ” ship. (Ok, maybe that was too much.) There ...

Original text: ??72??????6???7?50??????15?????????R??????????????????????????R?????4???36???????????????20???????????????????????????Dekalb????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? For this assignment, I simply looked up a Chinese news article and took a section out of it to be plugged into google translate. The resulting translation did not make much sense to say the least. According to news that the branch 72 , at 7:50 on the 6th , a 15 year old woman in the subway car R is an Asian male metamorphosis invasion , according to victim testimony indicates , the incident when the car is traveling R 4 Avenue to cross 36th Street , suddenly sitting beside a woman about 20 years old ...

I created an email advertising for tourism in Tombstone, Arizona, a town I’ve used a couple times in past assignments. This assignment uses the website Vertical Response to create this ad, and actually allows you to send it out to people, but a) I didn’t have emails to send it to, and b) I don’t want to spam random people with an ad. Tombstone is home to a lot of history: it earned the reputation as a tough western town, and boomed for a while due to its silver mine. It almost became a ghost town, but tourism has revitalized ...

The first web assignment I selected this week was Google Translate Fail which was worth 3 1/2 stars. For this assignment were had to find something in a foreign language and then use Google Translate to laugh about it. Below is how I did this: First, I selected a well known English saying and plugged it into Google Translate: After this I translated the saying into Japanese: Once translated, I moved the saying back into the left side of the translate box and then translated it back to English. This confirms for me how bad Google Translate is! It mixed up the ...

Today I leared that my favorite baseball team, the New York Mets once played at Shay’s 84380 Radium. Knowing the history of the Mets, I can assure you that they never played at a nuclear site, or anything like it. That failed translation was one of many I found when translating the mlbkorea.com page for The Mets from Korean to English for the 1-star Google Translate Fail assignment. The team’s profile seemed sparse in Korean, but I was able to guess that the top information was the team name, the year founded (1962) and the number of World Series wins ...

To dabble in some web storytelling, I completed the web assignment Google Translate Fail, worth 1 star, from the ds106 assignment bank. I chose this assignment because as a French minor, I know how google translate can interpret another language into English. First, I went to the website for the Le Monde newspaper, a famous paper in France, and then found the sports section. I thought sports would be an interesting topic to translate. There was a cool article on The X Games (ou Les X Games) that I took the summary of and translated it in Google Translate. “the Winter X ...
