Schoolyard Politics

For this assignment, I wanted to do the opposite of what was implied in the description. Rather than describe someone who shouldn’t be teaching because they are incompetent or inappropriate, I wanted to put someone in who was overqualified for the position, and simply couldn’t tone down for the audience.

What topi could be more inappropriate for youngsters than cutthroat politics? As a reader of the news and a student of history, political posturing is plainly lost upon even the middle-aged in this country. All I needed to do was find the perfect character to relay such information. Enter the Count of Mountjoy, a main character from my favorite book The Mouse that Roared. A big man in a small country, he has to posture himself to maintain a feeling of relevance in a big world. His monologues and tone were sufficient for the type of character I wanted…

The Count of Mountjoy, Prime Minister of the minuscule Duchy of Grand Fenwick and leader of the  anti-dilutionists (those who are opposed to watering down the nation’s wine exports), put on his manacle as he addressed the Kindergartners seated cross legged in a circle around him.

“Now, today you will learn about sharing with each other. The purported purpose of this system is to ensure that each gets a sufficient share of public amenities. In actuality, the process, like most political processes, can be taken advantage of by the aware. For you see, it is not so important that each person receives an equal share so much as each person is satisfied with what they get. This means that there are two categories of playmate. One category wishes to exploit more than their fair share. By being vigilant and with some well placed words, you can shame these people into taking an exactly proportional quantity of the amenities. The truly gifted can actually convince them to give back more than what they had taken. The other group is content with less than their share, and again through vigilance you can insure they receive exactly that which mkes them content. By partaking in these actions, you can insure the existence of excess. These resources can then be marshaled to the public good, whether it be building a fence for the stuffed animals, or garnishing the cubby area with paper snowflakes…”

This assignment practically wrote itself. The biggest tool for these types of assignments is a text editor and honesty. My familiarity with the character helps me keep the story folding (actually, with this character, it would never stop, which is why I don’t try to force an ending) while keeping a sense of consistency.

Never Again

Writing Assignment:

Renegade Teacher 3?

For this assignment we were supposed to write a story about a character teaching a class something, and it goes horribly wrong. So I wrote about the Tune Squad coming into a first grade class and telling them about what they do for a living. Unfortunately everything does go horribly wrong.

“Alright kids, today we are going to have three guest speakers. Two of them are very cool detectives and the other is a forensic technician!” The teacher of the first grade class, Mrs. Burke, was very excited to inform her students of the speakers. She had been trying to get the Tune Squad to come in and talk to her students for a while now, but they had always been busy with their cases.

“What’s a fensic techcian?” Billy was always one of those kids who never stopped asking questions.

Mrs. Burke sighed, “Billy, I’m going to let the FORENSIC TECHNICIAN, Mrs. Callaghan, answer that.”

At that moment there was a knock on the classroom door. The students started to squirm in their seats in excitement at the prospect of meeting real detective. Mrs. Burke squeaked in surprise and went to go open the door, “Good morning, please come in.”

As she stepped aside to let the guests in Detective Cunningham was the first to walk in. He was iffy about being there in front of all these little kids. His gait was stiff and he awkwardly smiled and waved to the grinning children.

After him Detective Longs appeared around the door. In his hand was, of course, food. He had made Callaghan pull into a McDonald’s before they arrived at the school. He cheerfully waved to the children and went to go stand next to Cunningham.

Callaghan was the last to enter the room. She had stopped to talk to the teacher and thank her for letting them talk to the kids, and tell them what kind of work they do.

“Children, let’s give our guest a big round of applause!” Mrs. Burk started clapping and soon all the kids were clapping along with her.

“Thank you very much,” Callaghan started, “We are very pleased to be here and talk to you all about what it is we do. My name is Emma Callaghan and I’m a forensic technician.” She pointedly looked and Cunningham.

He furrowed his eyebrows at the look she was giving him, “Oh. I- uh- I’m Detective Geoffrey Cunningham. I, um, I’m a detective.” He said it in such a way that perhaps it could have been a question.

“Really?” Callaghan looked at him with her eyebrows raised.

“I don’t know how to talk in front of little kids. Most of the people I talk to make me angry and get me cussing a lot.”

At this point Longs stepped up, “Hey everyone, my name is Detective Longs.”

Billy raised his hand, “What’s your first name Mr. Longs?”

Longs’ face went blank, “That’s classified information. If I told you I would have to –“

“LONGS NO!” Both Cunningham and Callaghan knew where that sentence would lead.

Mrs. Burke didn’t know how to respond to the… interesting officer. Her face had gone white when she realized what was about to be said. “Uh, Billy, Mr. Longs doesn’t really like his first name. That’s why he doesn’t want anyone to know it,” she drifted off with a pitiful laugh.

“No ma’am. I like my first name well enough. I just cannot tell it to the children,” he turned to the class, “You see classified means that it’s a big secret and if anyone were to find out that secret I have permission to terminate them in any way possible.”

Everyone’s mouth was hanging open by the time Longs was done with his explanation.

“Why did we think it was a good idea to bring him here?” Callaghan smacked her hand to her forehead.

Although Cunningham didn’t know how to deal with first graders, he knew he had to get the topic of discussion away from Longs’ first name, “So, what does a detective do?” Many hands shot up into the air. “Oh, uh, that was a rhetorical question. So…”

Billy’s hand shot up again, “What does rhe- ra- rhetasicle mean?”

“Well, I’m not sure what rhetasicle means, but rhetorical means I wasn’t expecting anyone to answer it. Now-“

“So then why did you ask a question if you didn’t want anyone to answer it?” A girl in the back chimed in.

“Because I was using it as an attention getter,” Callaghan could tell Cunningham was getting frustrated with the children. She put her hand on his shoulder to make sure he knew he needed to calm down.

He didn’t catch the hint.

“But we were already looking at you. Why was you trying to get even more of our attention?”

Cunningham was gritting his teeth, “Because that’s just how you start speeches.”

Callaghan stepped in then, “So who knows what a forensic technician does?”
No one raised their hands.

“Okay, well what I do is help the police gather all the evidence at a crime scene.”

“Do you get to see dead bodies?” Billy was at it again.

Callaghan looked to Mrs. Burke. The teacher was shaking her head. As the forensic technician went to go answer the little boy Longs jumped in.

“She does in fact see the victims’ bodies. Actually there is this one story we tell all the time. The victim had been hanging by a noose for over 3 weeks. He was very decomposed by the time we got to him. Callaghan had to walk under him and that was a bad idea because the bottom half of the body suddenly fell right on top of her. She had blood and guts all over her, but she couldn’t take a shower because it was all evidence,” He was the only one laughing by the end of the story.

Callaghan looked at Mrs. Burke, who had now turned a pale green, and mouthed, “I am so sorry.”

Mrs. Burke couldn’t take anymore. Somehow this had turned disastrous and she didn’t know how to get the class back on track. Detective Cunningham was still glaring around at all the children, Detective Longs was still silently chuckling at his story, and Callaghan looked like a disappointed mother. She knew what that look looked like because she had seen it so many times, “Well, it looks like were out of time. It’s time for math now class. Let’s give our… esteemed guest speakers one more round of applause.”

It’s safe to say that the Tune Squad was never invited back to that school.

For this assignment I used Microsoft Word to type out my story. From there I just copied and pasted it into this post.

Renegade Teacher- 3 points (my character Ol Mick)

Mick- Ok kids. Let’s hurry this up so I can get the bar. I am gonna teach all you’s about crime.

Junior- Ol Mick, are you ok?

Mick- Yesh? Why do ask that question you?

Junior- You just are wobbling around and you smell really bad.

(Mick falls asleep for 20 minutes while the kids stare at him wondering if he is dead. He awakes suddenly and starts speaking again.)

Mick- (Short Pause) Ok kids, I am now going to teach you about a great medicine called alcohol. Now what alcohol does is make ever boring part of life fun. Like me coming in here and teaching you kids. This is fun to me?

Gabe- My dad says alcohol turns decent guys into complete assholes.

Mick- Well your dads an asshole next question.

John- What is alcohol?

Mick- It is a magically fluid that tastes bad but when you get enough into your system you feel all loose like.

(The principal walks in and Mick does not see him)

Mick- It makes all the bad days into good days, it makes you forget your shitty life. It makes unattractive things look…

Principal- Ol Mick that is enough!

Mick- Welp Shit

Andrea is a Teacher for the Day.

Renegade Teacher: Andrea Style

For this Writing Assignment, I wanted to do something a little unconventional to the prompt. Instead of my favorite character, I am going to use my own character: Andrea.

Andrea walks in, filling in for the main teacher at Goolic Elementary. Andrea sits at her desk and begins to read over the lesson plan. The students begin to arrive and she makes for the chalk board. She grabs a piece of chalk and begins to write her name…’Mrs…..she begins to tear up. A student sees her and asks her what is wrong. She cannot help to deny it, she knows the student will pry. She knows his time; she has two sons at home. “It’s my husband she says.” The boy asks again what’s wrong. “He had an accident and passed away.” The little boy gives her a hug.

Andrea starts the lesson, which is on history. The kids listen intently, and Andrea tries not to sob. The kids then do their assignment. They were to write how history would be different had something else took place, in their own lives. One girl writes it about her grandpa. She explains she was unable to see him before he passed away, and that if she could change history, she would have visited him one last time. Andrea cannot hold it back anymore and starts to cry uncontrollably. The kids are dead silent, except for the boy who had come up to Andrea before. He stands up in front of the class and reads his history out loud. It is about his father who helped him build a boat one afternoon, and how if he could change history, that he would have made the boat better because it sunk in the middle of the pond, and they could not retrieve it. The kids laughed, and so did Andrea.

The little boy, who happened to be the principal’s son, knew just how to set Andrea at ease and cheer her up. What would have been a disaster, turned into an okay day. It was a start to living a life without him. Taylorarmstrong1

Ziggy Plays Teacher

Ziggy completed the Renegade Teacher assignment through a Tumblr post that he shared on other social media (Google+, Twitter, Facebook). Ziggy’s most likely minuscule time on the internet (because he’s in prison and won’t get away with this for long) is turning into a time for self-reflection and he wants … Continue reading

Teachers Are Terrible People…

Renegade Teacher

This is for the Renegade Teacher writing assignment.

Okay, this one pretty much wrote itself. I remember seeing this yesterday and thought this would be a good picture! I wanted to do something a bit more vulgar for the writing, but I figured I should keep it clean. This scene stuck out to me as it it showed a darker side of a character that was seen in Season 1, but there was not much explanation into this character’s personality.

Anyways, I just thought this would be perfect for the assignment! As usual, let me know what you think!

Select your favorite movie/show/book character (bonus points if they are hilarious/inappropriate).  Write a script that depicts this person teaching a lesson to a group of children.  Ilustrate the script with images or construct a storyboard to accompany your script.
