This was a cool little thing to do! I tried to streamline my process by doing most of it in presets beforehand so I could make the six second deadline, but it ended up still taking around two minutes. So I had to speed it up a lot. But yeah! Here’s a six second look into how I sometimes make glitch art!
This is a tutorial for the “6 second art” video assignment.
The first step is to record your video, just pick something fun and record yourself doing it. Length isn’t a huge deal, we’re going to speed it up next, but I wouldn’t make it longer than a minute or two as then it’s just a blur once you’ve sped it up.
Next, start up your video editing software of choice, I used shotcut, but any video editor will have an option to speed up the video.
In shotcut, the video speed option is under “properties”, but this will probably vary depending on the software you use.
All you have to do is increase the video speed until the length of the video is 6 seconds, thats it!
So how do I get my student’s to react the same to sketching? Good question, let me know when you find the answer- As a new(er) teacher, I still struggle getting my students to practice, and sketching what is in front of them is a challenge. Let them ‘free’ draw, and they will draw every cartoon character and everyone else’s drawings all day, but to extract their own creativity, I am still pulling teeth for about 75% of them. Sometimes I think I am expecting too much from elementary, but even my middle schoolers, are the same. I am wondering if offering more of a daily create, and the use of technology might inspire them, maybe if it is some of this ‘new school’ creativity, it will become more successful?
Six word stories, six word quotes, and six word poetry are all the rage. So why not six second art? Using any method of video, stop motion, or other visual medium, produce a six second video of you creating art. It could be digital art, physical art, or performance art, just create a six second video of you making it happen! Vine, Youtube, Vimeo, are all great places to host, although Vine happens to a great natural place for this type of work.
