Here I took a photo from a few years back of me and my brother. I really liked this assignment because I used to be really into photo editing!
I restored the color to our eyes to emphasize their difference between them.
This DS106 Assignment asks you to take all of the colour out of a photograph accept for one object or aspect of that photograph. The example given is the little girls’ red coat from “Schindler’s List”
The process of adding a pop of colour or taking colour away from a photograph draws the eye to a certain aspect of the picture and creates a stylised feel to it.
Firstly, I chose the photographs to edit, and I chose two photos that have a colourful subject that would lend itself nicely to doing this type of editing on it.
Both photographs I chose were ones I took myself, on my iPhone.
Then I used the select tool on Adobe Photoshop to select the subject; the rose and the butterfly. Then once the object was selected, I feathered the selection. Then I right-clicked on the selection and selected ‘Layer via Copy’
Then I selected the original background layer and went to adjustments and then ‘Black and White’.
With a few tweaks here and there and I was pretty much done.
Here is the final product:
The red of the rose was a better contrast against the black and white of the rest of the photograph. The butterfly was green on a green background and that made it more difficult to select at the beginning and to get a coherent shape.
Overall I think the rose photo on the right turned out better than the butterfly, as it was more of a clear shape
I took on the assignment, Splash the Color, and I think it was a lot of fun! I love messing with color in pictures. In this assignment, you had to have a black and white picture with one object or subject full of color. So, there was a “splash” of color.
When I read “splash” I immediately thought of water and boats, so I looked for pictures of boats but I didn’t like any of them. Then, I thought about a lighthouse! So this is the picture that I edited.
I tried to make the reflection in the water of the lighthouse also colored, but ended up not using it because I didn’t like the way it was looking…
I chose this assignment because I’m used to editing photos with Color Splash from when I was in high school. People used to ask me to edit their pictures and wanted me to add their favorite color to it. Even though I mostly use it to edit pictures of people, I highly enjoy using Color … Continue reading “ds106 Assignment 1”
Splash the Color- Color splash is a technique to emphasize details- you remove all color from a photo, and then restore original color to a single object, e.g. a green apple on a table. Think of the Girl in the red dress from Schindler’s List.

So I chose this for my first visual assignment because I have seen other people do this effect and have always wanted a reason to try it for myself. I also chose this picture because it looks like something from a fairy-tale: little houses surrounded by a little lake. I also wanted to keep the houses original color and instead accidentally chose the water. However, I was actually very pleased with this for two reasons: the green is actually a reflection of the canopy of trees about the pond, not the water itself, and two, if I only left the original color on the houses then most of the picture would be a melancholy black and white. The green adds the spunk. I personally love Miyazaki films and this looks like an image you could find in one of his beautiful movies (with more color of course).
After gathering evidence about the suspect, Buck had his gun ready as he entered the residence of Crazy Joe Shooter, expecting a full blown shootout. But it never came. Crazy Joe wasn’t there like Buck thought he would be, and the place looked like no one had been living there for weeks. The only thing he noticed that was out of place in this dirty house was a clean letter that had been opened. Buck thought this might be a clue to Crazy Joe’s whereabouts, so he picked up the letter and investigated further.
This weeks assignment was to chose a DS106 assignment and try to recreate it. I chose this assignmment which I had to basically chose a picture and use Color Splash to isolate one color from the picture while everything else was … Continue reading →
My second assignment this week is called Splash the Color. This assignment is to remove all the color from a photo, and then restore the original color to single object in the picture. I picked it because it’s an effect I’ve seen done many times, but never actually done it myself. I looked through some of the previous submissions for inspiration, then took to google. Eventually, I was led to this amazing picture by 5oulscape on flickr.
From the start, the picture already has amazing contrast between colors. I thought if I removed the color from everything but the house, it would be as if both the sky and the land were swallowing it up. The process itself was simple using Photoshop: select the object you want to stay colored with the pen tool, then invert the selection, and finally use the black and white adjustment option.
I think the end result is pretty cool, although it does almost look like I just photoshopped a house into this landscape. I’m going to have to try messing around with the coloring settings to see if I can get rid of that effect.
My girlfriend and I would always watch the Cartoon Network show Regular Show. We liked the show a lot, so we named our cars after two of the characters.
My car Mordecai is on the left, while her car Benson is on the right. Below are our two cars ‘kissing’.
Below are the characters from the show. You may have seen them before.
You might have been picturing Benson and Moredcai kissing instead. I’ve got your covered with an image I found online.
Anyway, this post created in order to satisfy an a visual assignment found here. We had to take a photograph, and omit all colors in it except for one or two spots that we wanted to stand out.
I chose this picture because it was one of the only pictures I had taken that had two pure colors. My other pictures were very patterned and did not have an interesting subject to make stand out.
In order to make this “color splash” technique, I used the website Fotor. This site allows you to do all sorts of image editing from within your web browser.
To create the splash effect, I uploaded my photo to Fotor, clicked the effects tab on the left, then clicked the “Color Splash” effect. I then chose to make a high contrast background, and finally had to trace the parts of the image I wanted to have color.
Below is a screenshot of the user-interface of Fotor. Thanks for reading!
