George’s Dating Profile

George’s new dating adventure began by creating his online profile.  I used the web assignmentStorytelling within the Web, to edit an existing dating profile.

I tried to edit Match profiles for about an hour, but they wouldn’t let me see anyone’s profile without signing up.  When I tried to do that, the process was WAY too long, and at the end, they wanted me to subscribe.  Instead, I used OkCupid, because it’s a free dating site.  I used someone else’s profile to start my editing.

I chose to use Mozilla Hackasaurus’s X-Ray Googles, because I remembered how easy it was to use the earlier this semester. I started with all of George’s info: movies, height, education, what he’s looking for, etc.  Then I gave him a profile picture.  When I was done, the site freaked out and I lost everything. It took me  three tries to finish the editing process, but in the end, it finally worked!

Buying Tickets

http://p.webremixes.org/rrecaxiu

This was part of my story where Mario and Luigi buy the tickets for the festival.  I edited everything in X-Ray goggles or whatever that web editor was called.  The original assignment was to tell a story within the web and I did that sort of.   Changed a lot of stuff.  Not really hard, but here it is.  Up at the top…

I Wish I was 5’5? Tall

I am six feet tall, and don’t get me wrong I love it. However, the princesses at Disney World have a height maximum, and being 6 feet tall means that I am way over the max. The day I found that out my heart shattered. I was so upset. However, that is besides the point. The reason for me divulging my heartbreak to you guys is because of the storytelling within the web assignment that I created for my final project (full story behind it to come soon). The topic of my project revolves around the idea of  how Ariel’s (from The Little Mermaid) story line would change if technology was a factor.

Well Ariel gets herself into a lot of trouble by Ursula, the villain of the movie because Ursula offers to give her legs. Well if Ariel had internet she surely could have just simply sent out a Craig’s List want ad for legs! This way, she never would have given her voice to Ursula and the story could go a whole lot differently. You will find out how exactly soon. (clicking the link will take you the website I designed)

I used the X-ray goggles tool in order to hack into the Craig’s list ad, where I could change the location, and the text of the want ad. I decided to include some lyrics from “Part of your World” to make things more related to the film. I decided to add in the 5’5″ in there as well in order to be as legitimate as possible.

Would you respond to something like this? I hope not!

Fans React!

For my fourth assignment for my final project I did storytelling within the web.  This assignment is to take a website and edit it completely so that it tells a totally different story than it once did.

I’m going to warn you now IF YOU WANT TO BE SURPRISED BY MY FINAL PROJECT STORY YOU SHOULD STOP READING NOW! So far none of my assignments have given too much away but this one will!! Turn back now if you don’t want to be surprised!

So to do this assignment I first had to decide which website I wanted to modify.  I decided to use Taylor’s official fan form. I really wanted to get Taylor’s fans reaction to the situation that I have created (which I still don’t want to spoil for you).  To do this assignment I used Hackasaurus.  This is an awesome program where once  you install it, all you have to do is point and click at the website you want to edit.  It’s seriously that easy!  The hard part was actually editing the website.  Coming up with ideas was much harder than I thought.  For the first six or seven I was rolling but when I got to like fifteen I was having a hard time.

After some creative ideas and a lot of editing here is what I came up with…

The Internet is for Porn!: How Trekkie Monster sees Reddit…

When I first saw the Telling Stories Within The Web assignment, I thought that I may redo Reddit using html, as seen by various characters from Musical Theatre interacting with each other, but soon abandoned that idea when I found the code to be too tricky to modify. I then decided that I should focus on one specific character and quickly chose Trekkie Monster, the porn obsessed monster from Avenue Q, one of my all time favorite works of Musical Theatre.

To do this, I first turned off the Reddit Enhancement Suite in Google Chrome, one of my favorite extensions, fearing that it would make modification too hard and logged into Reddit using my alternate account, since when using my main account, I am a mod of the ds106 subreddit, which causes some mod stuff to show up in my top navigation bar, something I did not think Trekkie would see if he was just a casual redditor who used reddit mainly to satisfy his love of porn, something he sings about in the show in The Internet Is For Porn. I subscribed temporarily to a handfull of porn subreddits with the account, wanting to get the formatting of the posts from those subreddits (NSFW subreddits are formatted differently on the front page than regular ones), which I thought that Trekkie would be subscribed to, correct and upvoted some posts on the page, so that it looked like Trekkie had been interacting with the site.

trekkie1

This is what Reddit looked like before I modified it. Simple right?

I then used Hackasarus to modify the text of all of the posts and changed all of the photos on the front page posts as well as adding some so they would better be able to fit into Trekkie’s world. I also changed up usernames for all of the posters, making some of them character specific to Avenue Q, (WhatChaTalkinAboutGary, straightasarod, xxxlucyxxx, and sadPrinceston) and others generically related to the world of the show. I did the same with the posts, making some, like the Gary Coleman AMA, the news article about the internet being for porn and the AskReddit post about finding one’s purpose in life, coming directly from the lyrics of the show and others being more general. I changed the titles of some of the subreddits that Trekkie is subscribed to, making up a few like ‘puppetsgonewild’ and ‘worldboobs,’ and made some of the posts imply that the world has both a puppet and human culture.

Here is the final result: Reddit as Trekkie Monster sees it.

In hindsight, if I was to change anything about this assignment, I may have done my work in a different browser, as I doubt that Trekkie Monster would use a blue Jonathan Adler theme in Chrome or would have bookmark folders for ‘crafts,’ ‘UMW,’ or ‘ds106′ and a link to pin things to Pintrest in his browser. He instead would most likely have links to things like YouPorn and the like, but that may be just me being picky. Otherwise, I like how Trekkie’s Reddit turned out and wouldn’t mind making reddit front pages from the view of other fictional characters as I really enjoyed doing this assignment.

Wonderous Webby Web Work

This week has taken a completely different turn from the last but if you’ve been keeping up with ds106, you should know by now this is nothing new. This week involved getting involved with the web and really taking it into our own hands. One of the assignments was Story Telling Within the Web, which involved downloading a program and altering a webpage. This is one of those weeks where I wish I was better at HTML but alas, I succeeded with the majority so I won’t beat myself up over it! I have to give praise this week to Hackasaurus, which really saved my butt. At first glance, it seemed really complicated, and like a buttload of downloads but as promised, it came through despite being overwhelmed at first. So I started off this assignment but going through craigslist and finding an ad in the Fredericksburg area to keep it local, I ended up going with one from the gig section. See:

Before!

It was a very innocent, non-funny post, right? Right. So I decided to have some fun with and add some humor to the post because how else would they attract any attention?

After

I know, I’m quite the comedian, please save your praise until the end of my post, aka the comments. I decided to mess with the obvious things, such as the title, but I even messed with the top links, and although I failed in changing where the links led to, at least I changed the title of the hyperlink. :) be sure to comment if you find any just knee-slapping hilarious. Here is the link to its own webpage just because that’s how official it is!

Wanted: Traveling Partner

For the main project of the week, we were to take an existing webpage and create some changes to it. This is actually a ds106 web assignment- Storytelling within the Web and it’s worth 5 stars.

The hardest part about this assignment was finding a webpage to actually do the assignment on. I looked on Amazon, IMDB, Pinterest, and Craigslist. I looked at the past students work and some work that current ds106ers have done and always thought, “I wish I had thought of that.” Finally I decided to just google “weird Craigslist ads” and came across this one: Wanted: Mule named Sal.

Craigslist ad

Well it’s definitely an interesting request to make. So I decided I’d just edit it a little I keep some parts from the original and elaborated on the rest, and tried to put some humor into it. So here’s what I came up with:

Web page

Wanted: Traveling Partner

Pretty neat, huh? To create these changes I used the Moxilla Hackasaurus tool. I found it very easy to use and had no problems at all. So tell me, do you think we can find a mule, named Sal with all of these characteristics? I might be possible!

Storytelling Within the Web

Okay, so this assignment definitely intimidated me when I first read its instructions. However, as soon as I got the X-Ray Goggles on my bookmark bar and played on a few sites, I was completely comfortable messing around with a website. So, I went on Amazon.com and searched for this one product I hated when I was in high school: the Griffin FM transmitter.

Now, why did I have this product when I hated it so much? Well, my car does not have an auxiliary input thingy, so I am unable to plug my iPhone into my car and listen to my favourite jams. Frustrated, I googled around for a product to help solve my problem. In comes the God-awful demonic FM transmitter. I was so excited when I got it in the mail. I immediately plugged it in to test it, and oh my goodness, it was terrible. First, the transmitter claims it would find the best FM station to tune into so you can listen to your music. Uh, nope. Mine would tune into the most random stations, and would just have random static in the background. On every station it chose. And it wasn’t even random static every once in a while. Nope. It was awful continuous static that would not budge. Then, after a week or two, the wiring started to break. Plus, it would continuously charge my iPhone and pretty much killed my battery.

Alright, so I’ll stop ranting about this terrible product, and show you my work.

So yes, I used the X-Ray Goggles to transform the Griffin FM Transmitter’s Amazon page. It went from this:

to this:

As you can tell, I had a lot of fun messing around with this page.

What do you guys think? Do you have a product you hate so much that you would love to rewrite its description? Or am I the only one that’s this super bitter?

Hackasaurus

To complete Storytelling within the web, I chose to intervene in the design of a post from Craigslist.  Before even searching on Craigslist, I chose to take the easier Hackasaurus approach instead of altering raw code.  I downloaded the X-Ray Goggles into my bookmark bar, which allowed me to change the text, format, and images of any web page.

I went searching on Craigslist for any headline that caught my eye that I could make a story about.  I stumbled across a listing of a fairy pin for sale.  I immediately knew what I could turn this posting in to. The original listing is for a winged fairy pin for $5, made of  crystal insets and silver metal.  I activated my X-Ray Goggles and started altering the page.

X-Ray Goggles

First, I made the pin listed by “Fairies R Us” and changed the price from $5 to “Priceless”.  I then spruced up the description by saying it was made of Diamonds, Platinum, and Swarovski crystals. Finally, I created the illusion that wearing this pin would allow you to fly and would protect you from air planes.  I added a twist by doing a spin-off of an alcohol commercial when they say, “Please fly responsibly.”  Also, you have to go to the sky to buy the pin according to the location.

My edited site can be found here.

I wanted to make this page in my own site, but I couldn’t get it to work.  The NotePad program wouldn’t let me save my code.  There were no error messages, but whenever I hit “save”, nothing happened, so I just published the site and obtained a URL (found above).

It’s Tricky

It’s Tricky – Run DMC

There was one web design assignment that all of us DS106ers had to do. It was called Storytelling within the Web. For this assignment, we had to recreate an already existing web page.

First, I had to download Mozilla Firefox because I didn’t have it and the Hackasaurus didn’t want to work without it. Unlike my previous downloads in this class, this download was very easy and fast. {That was a nice change!! I feel like I always have a problem with the downloads in this class}. This goggle tool made it super easy to complete this assignment! I had way too much fun doing it, so much so that I thought “there’s no way this is an actual assignment…like for a grade?!”

Here is a picture of the original page:

Here is the TRUTH to the DS106 website:

You can see it on it’s own site too.

For this assignment, I went for “the truth”. What people would want to see when signing up to take this class. Like I said before, I had a lot of fun doing this assignment. I can see myself using this tool again later to trick people. Hmm April Fool’s Day is coming up…. {muahahahaha <– evil laugh}
