Remix Page

Man, I never how remixing a webpage could be so easy. X-Ray Goggles is a powerful tool, and I have never heard about it until this week. You basically have the ability to edit any page’s text and images. Once activated on my browser, I was eager to get started but was not sure what page I wanted to edit. CNN and The New York Times came to mind, but I wanted to do something different. I began to think about a topic that has been buzzing lately. That’s when it hit me, people are still raving about the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

I made my way to Apples homepage to get started. The idea was to make it seem as if the company was having a crazy deal in promotion for the newly released iPhones. The entire page was pretty long, so I ended up editing about half of it. Some cocky wordplay was added to certain parts, basically stating that their brand (Apple) is number one and they know it, and also bragging that they have no competition. There was no need to change any images because the original ones worked fine with the new text added.

All in all, I enjoyed this assignment, and will be keeping X-Ray Goggles on my Bookmarks Bar for future use. Sharing your remixes on social media is a breeze as well. It’s definitely a cool little tool to have around, and edit pages to fool with family and friends.

It’s the NFL Time of Year

For Storytelling Within the Web I decided to change up a NFL news page that was initially talking good about the Cowboys, and was presenting the links to the other top ranked teams. I chose to do a site about the Cowboys, because I am a die-hard Washington Redskins fan, and although we aren’t doing well this season, I always stick behind my team. Now, I was presented with the chance to change anything on any site, so I decided to change everyone talking good about the Cowboys this season and how well they are doing, into how well the Redskins are doing! Now in all reality, I wish I didn’t have to change a website in order for me to say the Redskins are doing well this season, but it was definitely a fun experience using the X-Ray Goggles to change things up and make Redskins fans happy for the time being!

To start things out, I went on to the X-Ray Goggles Site and followed the steps on the right side of the page, which showed me how to put the “Activate X-Ray Goggles” widget onto the Toolbar of Mozilla. After adding the button to my toolbar, I started visiting different sites, and thought of doing something with sports. I then decided to visit the ESPN NFL site and found the article about the Cowboys and the top ranked teams.

BeforePin

Before I activated the goggles, this is what the webpage looked like before. Everything was about the Cowboys; the pictures the writing, everything. Then, I got ahold of the page and started changing things up a bit!

When I activated the goggles by clicking on the widget in the toolbar, everything I scrolled over had the option to change.

Editing

By clicking on the link, I then had the chance to change the information and pictures within that section.

After editing everything I wanted to change in that section I clicked save changes, and continued on within the entire webpage to edit it all. When I was satisfied with the pictures, information and titles of the page, which now spoke about the Washington Redskins and no longer the Cowboys, I went ahead and published the site by clicking on the “P” on the bottom right hand of the page.

When I published it, I was given a stand alone URL for my remixed page and that link can be seen here!

There is my final site of the Washington Redskins now being the best team in the league! (if only it was true, right?)

Storytelling Within The Web

When I first starting reading this assignment it seemed really hard but it was surprisingly easy. I followed the directions and it was very simple. I chose to mess around with the Web assignment page.  I am in the middle of figuring out which assignments I want to complete. I changed the names of the […]

Hacking – Word of the Year

While brainstorming for ideas for today’s Daily Create, “Draw/Create an image that creates a positive connotation for the word “hacking”, I realized that I could combine this with our assignment to hack a website. What better way to give hacking a higher profile than to have the Oxford English Dictionary announce that hacking, in the sense of remixing, be the word of the year for 2013.

Word of the Year

I used X-Ray Goggles to do the web page hacking and incorporated several chunks of text, and a couple of images, including an animated gif into the page. I found that I wasn’t able to edit all the text and tags that I wanted in the basic view, but the advanced option was more than sufficient.

Part One: Searching

This is my first assignment for my final project!

To begin Alice’s journey, I created a Reddit.com webpage under the assignment Storytelling Within the Web.

Using X-Ray Goggles from Hackasaurus, I edited the html of a random post that I found in the subreddit r/AskReddit.

Below is a screen capture of what the page looked like pre-X-Ray Goggles:

Once I got my hands on it with the X-Ray Goggles, I changed a few things to create the story for Alice.

I edited the page to be Alice’s post looking for the white rabbit. She had taken a photo of the white rabbit, which she tried to link on the site.

I had originally chosen a r/AskReddit page that had over 2000 comments on it, and then I realized that it would probably be better to find a page that allowed me to change all of the comments to make it more realistic… so, obviously, I decided the best option would be to find a new post that had only one or two comments. I figured, also, that Alice’s post probably wouldn’t have been very popular on the subreddit.

There are only two or three slight hints as to the identities of the people who are in the post. I didn’t want to be all obvious because most people on reddit are anonymous.

Part Two

Abe Tries His Hand At Craigslist

For the next portion of my final project I completed the “storytelling within the web” assignment.

I thought it would be pretty comical if President Abraham Lincoln posted a Craigslist ad for help on how to work modern technologies, so I went for it. The process was pretty simple. First, I set up the craigslist to be for New York City, as that’s were ol’ Abe is located in the story. I then went to the “technical support jobs” section and found this ad:

I then opened up this html file with textwrangler and started messing around with the page. I started the page off with a play on the Gettysburg Address, and went from there. Here is the link to the final product: LincolnAd.

Introducing Me

For my first assignment for this final project, I chose to do Storytelling within the Web {*****}. I wanted to introduce my character to people who have not seen the show, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I thought of different ways of doing this but showing y’all her Pinterest board would really let you see who she is and what she likes.

I did this with a program called Hackasaurus. I used this program before and it was very user friendly and fun to use. It was actually kind of crazy…how can someone hack into a website and change things. I even changed pictures! It’s insane! So really, don’t believe everything you see or hear on the internet.

Coming up the pins that she would pin was easy at first but then it got challenging. I wanted to convey that she was just a normal teenage girl – but also a witch. At the same time, I wanted to introduce Libby {who plays a big role in this final story…you’ll see how later ;)}, her aunts, and her boyfriend.

One Way or Another

For my third assignment for this final project, I chose to do Storytelling within the Web {*****} again. The reason I chose to do this assignment again was because I wanted to show how Sabrina reacted to Libby’s attempt to blackmail her. She obviously is going to seek revenge…I wanted to show everyone exactly how she was going to do that. And with what she would seek revenge with.

I spent the most time on this assignment than any other assignment I have done for this final project. I wanted to make it realistic and the webpage that I used my Hackasaurus tool on was really long. This tool amazes me every time I use it. You can really change anything!!! I changed everything from the product reviews, summary, price, and even the related objects!!! I chose to hack a Amazon web page. Yes, Sabrina is going to buy something to seek revenge on Libby.

Go to the full Amazon web page to see all of the details – even the minor ones. Just kick back, relax, and read!

Here is the product Sabrina just purchased:

Here is my favorite part about the changes I made to this web page:

Do you have any predictions about what farm animal Libby will turn into???

The Royal Baby Stroller

There’s no doubt that the Royal family needs to start prepping for their newest mini-Royal due in July. One necessary purchase will be a stroller. While the Royals are wealth beyond compare, it is no shock that they are also very practical people. Kate, herself, wears her outfits more than once and mixes “regular” priced items with more expensive items into her daily wardrobe.

So it’s really no shock that they would consider practical and functional items for their child. I’m here again with another Storytelling within the web assignment. This time I’m bringing to you the Royal Stroller.

In doing some research it seems that Kate might consider this stroller by Mammas and Papas, a British based store. While the price may still cause sticker shock to many, it is a practical, lightweight stroller that is perfect of a busy Royal mom on the go!

I did some minor editing to the website and here is what I came up with. Make sure to go to the link below to see more detail!

I’ve got just a few more assignments to do before the big story reveal! Stay tuned!

What Kate’s been Pinning

The Second component for my Final Project was to complete the 5 star assignment of Storytelling within the Web. You will see this assignment in another post as well because I am using it twice!

For this assignment though I wanted to make Kate’s Royal Baby Pinterest board. I went to Pinterest and typed in “baby boards” and got a lot of options. Then I tried “Royal Baby Boards” and I was shocked as to how many came up. It was sorta alarming, there were tons of boards about baby bump watches for Kate, kinda creepy if you ask me. Finally I settled on this one. There were a fair amount of pins and covered different baby items.

I used the X-Ray Goggles to change all the pin labels. Overall it was an easy process. Obviously I’ve never talked to Kate, so I really have no idea what sorts of words she uses. But she appears very classy and elegant, so I used words like “adorable”  ”perfection” and “lovely” to describe things, I feel like she’d use those words a fair amount.

Here is a little preview, but click on the link below to check out the website!

Would you follow HRH Kate on Pinterest if she had one? I know I would!

Okay This wraps up another assignment for the final! On to the next one, which is another web storytelling one!
