The Last of the Rockmen

This is for the Music Mashup assignment on the audio assignment page.  The assignment was to take two distinct sounding songs and mash them up to make a new song with their alternating or combined sounds.  I used Rockmen from the FTL soundtrack and the theme song from The Last of Us.  I decided to use video game sound tracks to avoid the copywrite infringement that comes along with using regular, licensed songs.  I alternated the songs on their respective builds, then alternated them in the main part of their tracks.  Then, as they reached each of their finales, I had them play at the same time, overlapping each other.  I liked using these two songs because they have very different moods and sounds to them.  Rockmen is quick and upbeat, and is a combat track for its game.  But the Last of Us theme is slower, sadder, and is meant to be more cinematic in its mood.

Audio Assignment: Music Tag (2pts.)- “Sebastian Crane Modern Music Tag.”

Let me start off this post by saying…this should be worth more than 2 stars! It took me a very long time to do this so that the words of the songs matched one another at the end/start points. The songs I chose for this assignment are in my Spotify playlist and the process of picking them out was fairly simple. Connecting the songs by the words they had in common was a little tedious, but I did enjoy this assignment since it made me think of how the songs could somehow relate to each other.  But my larger problem came with copyright. I remade my mashup at least 5 different ways and it was still subject to copyright according to SoundCloud, so it was removed every single time. This was extremely (emphasis on extremely!) frustrating. I fist tweeted about my frustrations to Professor Burtis and she was very helpful in the advice she gave me, which was to try different songs or try just posting onto this page. But she warned me of the risks I’d be taking if I were to just post, so I didn’t want to try it. I then asked one of my friends what to do and she told me to play with adjusting the pitch and it should be fine. And here we are…success! I also adjusted the tempos slightly in some of the songs, which gave it a faster pace which kind of grew on me. With the pitch, I only adjusted it by one point and it still sounded nice for me. Since I did struggle through this ongoing copyright issue, I began to understand it a bit more. Personally, I have never had a copyright issue happen to me so this was definitely a first, and hopefully only time this will happen to me. In my mind after the copyright readings, I thought one could use the songs if they were using them in a new, innovative way, but Sound Cloud stated that as an invalid reason, so I did not dispute the claims.

But as for the mash-up of songs, here is the layout…

These songs are from the 2000s-present and represent how Sebastian views himself and how others view him. I felt like breaking away from the 1950s time period I placed him in to show how the experiences he goes through and how others view him are understandable and tangible to our current times. Each of the songs can directly connect to Sebastian’s internal views of himself and situations he finds himself in as well as how others view him.

1.“Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse- how Sebastian felt for Margaret, his ex-lover, when he was with her. He was “a fool” for her as one of the lyrics lends to and she set his soul alight,” meaning that she enchanted him in this way that brought his soul to life. This song illustrates how she drove him crazy at times, but he still loved her so intensely.

2.“Womanizer” by Britney Spears- how most women view Sebastian since he refuses to settle down; he is viewed as a player, but women still come to him knowing that he may not ever contact them after their one-night together. He does not mean to treat women in this manner since he knows nothing serious will come of them, but women view him as a womanizer all the same.

3.“I Don’t Care” by Fall Out Boy- how he tends to think of himself and does not pay mind to others’ opinions and if he does, it is only internally. Also can lend to his frequent egotistical attitude he can hold. Sebastian holds himself with high regard and some of his actions may be selfish, but he is willing to do what ever it takes to preserve himself, even if that means stepping on others’ toes.

4.“Love Me Again” by John Newman- how Sebastian wants a love like he had with Margaret again; he wants to be loved and love again soon, but is fearful of it because of his bad experience. In ways, he wants Margaret to be his again so he can feel that love he had before, but he knows how wrong it is to feel that way about someone who hurt him so badly.

5.“Undisclosed Desires” by Muse- how Sebastian views Sasha Kellogg: he wants to know what’s under the surface and he is deeply attracted to her. Sebastian senses that she has “demons” in her past and is evermore curious about Sasha since she is not the most open book about who she was and is now. Sebastian is intrigued by her because of her mysterious demeanor and this song can truly describe that tension between them.

6.“Afraid” by The Neighbourhood- how Sebastian is afraid that his dark side will consume him. He does not want to become someone who is loathed and this can even apply to his drinking habits since he drinks frequently, and therefore, fears he will become like his father in this way. Also the line “you make me wanna die” is how John Reeves (the man he publicly shamed) feels when he thinks of Sebastian or encounters him.

7.“Into the Past” by Nero- how Sasha Kellogg wants to know about Sebastian’s past so she can understand him and be with him now. This song was featured in “The Great Gatsby,” which alluded to the quote, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” With this idea of going into the past, it can also represent how Sebastian is somewhat consumed by his past since the fears he does have reflect his painful past; he relives his past when he can’t fully trust in someone because he has been physically and emotionally broken in the past and has not fully recovered. It was mainly with his mother’s departure, his father’s drunken beatings, and Margaret’s cheating habits that affected him so. He does not feel far from his past, even though his father and him began to mend their relationship and he is not involved with Margaret (he still has not heard from his mother). With regards to Donny, his younger brother who was enlisted in war and now has paralysis, he feels responsible for that injury since he could not go in his place because of his fractured shoulder from his father’s past rage.

8.“Do I Wanna Know” by The Arctic Monkeys- how Sebastian catches himself wanting Margaret back and he knows she wants him too, but he will not crawl back to the woman who cheated on him. This is a story I want to touch on in a writing section in the future to demonstrate how complicated Sebastian’s mind is when it comes to her. She remains a puzzle to him because he can’t fully believe she would hurt him the way she did and dreams about if things were different.

Mia’s iPod Circa 2008

Audio week is back again, and the assignment bank is back in action. This week we are required to do 10 stars, with at least 5 dedicated to our character. While this assignment is not dedicated to Blair, it was still fun and worth 3 stars. The assignment was entitled So and So’s Greatest Hits. The task: There are some bands/musicians/artists out there who constantly make solid songs/albums. Using Audacity, pick a band/musician/artists and create a mash-up of what you consider to be some of their greatest hits. It needs to be at least 5 songs (if you can’t find 5, then they might not be as great of a band as your think they are) and at least 5 minutes, but feel free to go over if the music is groovin’. Upload to soundcloud and introduce us to your favorite band and their songs! Have fun!

Thanks assignment, I did actually have fun doing this. I decided to feature one of my favorite bands from my high school days (and even today) Boys Like Girls. Teenage Mia would be quite excited for this assignment, if you ask me. If you haven’t heard of them, you should look them up.

Using audacity, I took all of the songs I wanted to use and cut them into pieces. I then molded the pieces together to create one solid audio. My transitions could have been better, but overall I was pleased.

It was really hard to pick songs, because I love every single one, but these are the ones I chose off of Youtube

Up Against the Wall

The Great Escape

Hero/Heroine

The First Time

Five Minutes to Midnight

Two Is Better Than One (feat Taylor Swift)

The process wasn’t difficult, but it was time consuming to edit the pieces to somewhat mesh together. It was also hard to pick just certain parts of the songs because all of the songs in entirety are amazing. This assignment pushed me, like all of the assignments do.

At one point, I accidentally deleted a section and couldn’t figure out what had happened. By the time I realized, I was angry and annoyed. I had to re upload one of the songs and recut it (after I had cut it PERFECTLY! ugh. Technology). However, I was able to cut it almost as perfectly again, and then all was well in my life.

I couldn’t upload to SoundCloud because of copyright (which we talked about last week and you can read my feelings on here), so I just uploaded it to my post instead. Hopefully the next sixish minutes will make you love Boys Like Girls just as much as I do.

3 stars down!

Layla Throughout Her Day

I did the audio assignment where you mash together sounds to create your day. I decided that this would be a perfect one to incorporate my noir character. For simplicity’s sake, I chose to start her day from morning to when she went to bed. It gave me a nice kind of anchor. I began with an alarm clock waking her up because something always ends up waking us up in the morning (or at least close to what one considers morning). Next, it is the voice of one of her Russian bodyguards speaking to her, a banter regular throughout her day. A sigh to get her ready for the rest of the day and a lovely gunshot to touch up her afternoon. And of course she needs to eat. And finally, one of the things she dreads the most is a board meeting which almost always ends with one man yelling at another while Layla tries to not shoot everyone in the room. She finishes with a drop into her bed and a last sigh to end her tiring day.

For some reason my sound isn’t embedding the right way so it’s only showing up as a link.

She’s Dead Isn’t She- 4 stars

For this assignment I had to make a mash-up of sounds and make something scary. Using freesound I imported all my sounds and I would say I did a pretty good job. Making this mash-up I learned how to move audio from a place to another place so I can get my audio in the perfect spot. This was a big help in creating and it will help for future assignments as well.

Montage-O-Bay

‘Create a surreal panorama by first making a panorama (duh), and then munipulating the photograph to make it out of this world. However, don’t go out and just make a panorama via your iPhone!!! Take some pictures and mash them together!’

So, dear reader, I mashed, in response to Visual Assignment 1330 ‘Surreal Panorama’ of the digital storytelling open course ds106:

Montage-O-Bay

This composite image began a few months ago with recent experiments with the panorama mode on my Android phone. It doesn’t always work – sometimes it just takes multiple individual photos rather than stitching multiple photos into a single panorama. But when it works, it can produce some very satisfying images:

Morecambe Bay

I had in mind that for this assignment I would montage a few similar panoramic landscapes taken on Morecambe Bay in PowerPoint, cutting them up, slicing, copying, rotating, altering brightness and contrast, and so on to create something still recognisable as a landscape, but abstracted, more architectural, and pushing the over-exposure further:

surreal panorama montage

The earth is in the sky, but the in the darker contrast areas there is an attempt to make a bridge or perhaps a pier. I could have spent more time making it more fantastic or surreal, but there came a point when further manipulation seemed pointless. I couldn’t entirely eliminate the horizontal strip effect, but it has a certain amout of visual tension and patterning of the inverted earth-sky and the repeated posts that is OK. But I think that the original Android camera panoramas look more ‘dreamy’ and surreal than the mashed version. This one even has a glitch that suggests a parallel scene within a scene:

Morecambe Bay with Glitch

In the end, though, sometimes, as we well know, ‘good enough’ is good enough.

Audio Assignment – “So and So’s greatest hits” (3 points)

For some reason, Soundcloud uploaded the song, but it doesn’t exist, so I’ll have to keep trying with that. But I basically made a mashup of some of One Direction’s more rock influenced songs using audacity. I trimmed them and added appropriate fade in/outs. I also used different parts of each songs so get some variety so you weren’t just hearing the beginning of five songs.

(Here is screenshot proof the song exists somewhere…but when you press play it says nothing is there)

Screen Shot

ahh yes, I have discovered the issue. I may just have to upload the audio to YouTube.

The Queen BeyHive Jive

When searching for audio assignments to complete, “So and So’s Greatest Hits” grabbed my attention immediately. I have always wanted to create a mash-up of songs from one artist, because I frequently go on YouTube and listen to them based on which artist I am in the mood for that day. The assignment states: There … Continue reading The Queen BeyHive Jive

NEEDTOBREATHE

I decided to do the Greatest Hits Storytelling audio assignment and used the band NEEDTOBREATHE.

For this mashup, I started out with a slower song and then the mashup builds into and ends with a fast paced song. I used Audacity to create the mashup and used the fade in and out effects to make the transitions sound somewhat decent. It didn’t take as long as I thought it was going to just because of all the practice I’ve had with Audacity this week.

I really enjoy NEEDTOBREATHE’s music because their lyrics aren’t words that just so happen to rhyme and sound good together, they write about real things. These five songs are about making a difference in the world. They talk about darkness and light and redemption and hope. It’s great stuff so if you don’t listen to them I highly recommend you do so!!

Oh yeah, I brought it Back

Favorite Song (1 1/2 Stars)

Take your favorite song. Remove the lyrics. Play only up to thirty seconds of the song. Listener must be able to guess.

Story Behind the Story

Phew, let me tell you, while this may have been 1 1/2 stars, the process I took to get to this stage was excruciating. Let me back track.

I originally wanted to do the assignment where you slow a song down to 800%. It was going to be the very first audio assignment that I completed. I figured it wasn’t going to be super easy but I had confidence that I knew how to at least slow down a song. Wrong. This was just the beginning of my frustrations. First of all, audacity and I have had a constant battle this week and it is hard to say who is in the lead. Did you know that it is impossible to slow a song down to 800% on Audacity? Well guess what, IT IS. So after two trips to the DKC and and injured mouse pad, I finally gave up. I wanted so badly to figure out a way, but it just wasn’t going to happen. Maybe one day I will have the courage to go to war, but this battle was a shut out.

I still wanted to do something with music. Mash-ups and remixes have always been an interests of mine (but I could never in a million years make one), so this was my tiny step into the world of audio editing. Now since I HAD no idea what I was doing, I once again went to the DKC (I should just become a promotional ad for your center because I feel like I have been in there at least 10 times). I found out it really wasn’t as hard as I had expected. The tutor walked me through the steps and then we spent some time playing around to get it at a good point.

This assignment really brought in the idea of background sound being the influential piece of music. As I learned when reading Hanson’s piece, sound makes the purpose of the song important. This isn’t a perfect example, apparently some songs have so many layers that newbies like me just can’t get rid of all of them. At first I was extremely frustrated by some of the background noise. My tutor and I even had Dr. Burtis listen to it to make sure that it qualified the assignment. Even though she said yes, I still came home and tried my hardest to find a way to get rid of it. There was one point when my roommate asked “well why don’t you just use the instrumental version on youtube?” Two thoughts ran through my head, first, why did I not know that there was an instrumental version, and second, it wouldn’t be as satisfying knowing I hadn’t done it myself.

“There are no finished products, only due dates.”

Work Itself

Narrate the Process

In case you missed it, I had to do a throwback. I mean who didn’t like the Backstreet Boys? This was a confusing process and by the end it was a lot of clicking random buttons and moving dials to get it right where I wanted it. I dragged the song from my iTunes account (I’m not ashamed to say this) and put it in audacity. I cut it to 30 seconds and that is about how far I got before the DKC tutor stepped in. He was a lifesaver! We googled the process and went through the steps.

I have realized while there are certain steps to be taken in sound editing, a lot of it stems off of messing around with the functions. By the end, I couldn’t tell you what buttons were used, I just know that at some point we had done it. While I am confident that I could do it again, it seems that there is no set way to ensure a perfect outcome. The end game develops from what you make of the process, it is a part of you.
