Holiday Mashup

For my final Mashup Assignment this week, I decided to create and complete my own assignment called Holiday Mashup worth 3 stars! I wasn’t feeling super enthusiastic about any of the other assignments. With the holiday season coming up, I am feeling very enthusiastic about Thanksgiving and Christmas though! I decided it would be great to give people the opportunity to creatively mashup their favorite holidays and cultural traditions. The assignment asks you to visually combine your top THREE favorites, creating a new character and telling the story behind that character. The goal is to preserve elements from each holiday/tradition you choose, while also formulating a new holiday/tradition out of the combination. My favorite holidays are: 1. Christmas, 2. Thanksgiving, and 3. Easter. I combined these into one, cohesive character below!

Untitled

This character is the thankful Christmas bunny! He still has all of his Easter Eggs filled with treats, but each also contains a slip of paper (like a fortune cookie) which gives the recipient of the egg one of the things the bunny is thankful for. He has two little buddies, the bird and the turkey who help him deliver the thankful eggs to all the little children, like how Santa gives presents to little kids! If someone was bad that year, they received an egg that asks them to do something nice for someone else. I think by mashing up these three holidays, I have created a unique character that challenges both children and adults to be conscious of their actions and to live gratefully, while also being rewarded for their kindness.

I created this image with Pixlr, an online photo editing software. I used clipart images to create this character, all found through Google searches. I then added each image onto the picture by opening them up as a layer through the copied URL. I resized and positioned each image to make one cohesive character image.

Holiday Mashup

We all have favorite holidays, but sometimes it’s hard to pick just one! For this assignment, use a photo editing software like Pixlr or Photoshop to mashup your top THREE favorite holidays/cultural celebrations. Use whatever elements you would like from each holiday, creating a character or scene with the images/symbols you’ve chosen. Tell the story behind this character or image!

Sports Teams Mashup

The Work Itself

This assignment is titled “Your Favorite Teams Mashup“, its instructions are to “combine the logos of two or more of your favorite sports teams. Don’t just create an image with the two logos next to each other! Make the final logo look natural and cohesive.” It is currently rated 3.5 stars for difficulty. I mashed up the Oilers logo, Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket, and Falcons logo together. Here it is on my flickr.

The Story Behind The Story

In this case, the yellow jacket is prey for the falcon. To observe the land better and for hunting purposes, the falcon likes to perch atop tall places and see what is below. The falcon finds a oil rig tower (oilers logo) and sits on top until it sees its prey. Eventually the falcon spots a yellow jacket, the falcon swoops on top of it, and grabs it with its talons. It brings the prey back to the oil tower, where the falcon will eat the yellow jacket. I chose these logos because I wanted to make it as realistic as possible and as relatable to nature as possible.

The Process, Narrated

I googled searched an image of the “Oilers”, “Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket”, and “Falcons logo”. I then opened up Pixlr Editor. I inserted each image as a “layer” into from my desktop into Pixlr Editor. I then used the shaping/cropping tool to position and either minimize or enlarge the photos as I desired. I used the paint bucket tool to fill in the background color all white. I horizontally flipped the yellow jacket so it would be facing away from the falcon. In this position the yellow jacket appears dead or more so than if it were facing towards the falcon. Here a few photos to document my process.

Emoji Mashup

For this assignment you are to take a picture of one of your friends or just a person that is in the moment doing something exactly like an emoji and then mash them together for comparison.

Being an iPhone user and an avid texter, I’ve become obsessed with emojis! The latest iPhone software update included a lot of new emojis and this is one of my favorite.

How I Did It:

This assignment was very simple. All I had to do was find an emoji then take a picture of someone recreating it. The person I used to make the face was my brother and the emoji I used was the rolling eyes. He’s always rolling his eyes at me whenever I ask him for something so I though he was the perfect person to use for this! I took the picture of my brother on my iPhone. To get the picture of the emoji to be bigger I used the app Phonto.

Next, I used the app Picstitch to put the emoji and the recreation side by side. All I had to do was choose the photos from my Camera Roll and re-size them once I put them in the frame.

Emoji Mashup

For this assignment you are to take a picture of one of your friends or just a person that is in the moment doing something exactly like an emoji and then mash them together for comparison.

I chose this 4 star assignment because it seemed very simple to do. To start it, I went on Facebook and found a picture from my profile in which I thought someone looked like an emoji. Instead of choosing the emoji first, I looked for photos that had the expression of an emoji I’ve seen and decided to go with this picture:

scared emoji

Which immediately made me think of this emoji:

face-screaming-in-fear

So I opened up Microsoft Paint and cropped the photo so it most represented the emoji:

Then I pasted the picture of the emoji next to the picture above in Microsoft Paint and created the mashup:

Guess that Artist! Mashup.

10 Second Sound Mashup- 4 Stars

The prompt for this assignment is:

This is some sort of variation on Katy Chase’s The Contest That Nobody Could Win assignment, but instead of clips from a TV show or movie, do clips from your favorite songs and see if anyone can guess what they are. Or at least the artist. Do two or three second clips using 4 or 5 songs. Make them all different. Use soundcloud to post!

The Story Behind the Story

If you have been reading my other blogs, you probably know at this point that my favorite artist is Tom Petty so of course I had to do a mashup of four of my favorite songs from my favorite album by him, Full Moon Fever. I always find his music relaxing and chill, it just puts me in a happy place. This songs especially achieve this with their cool melodies and funny lyrics, I find him to be a musical genius!

Narrating the Process

Since I already had the album, Full Moon Fever, downloaded on my computer, I was able to import the four songs I wanted to use quite easily into Audacity. I used “Free Fallin’,” “Yer So Bad,” “Won’t Back Down,” and “Feel a Whole Lot Better” (and no I did not put them in the correct order, you need to guess it!). Once each song was imported into Audacity, I cropped each one to a clip of about 2-3 seconds each.

Then I “Cut” and “Paste” each clip until they were all combined.

And that completes my mashup of Tom Petty!

[Witty Title about Consumer Mashups]

So, it’s been a long couple days, where I’ve mostly just been sleeping and eating delicious foods. Not that that isn’t what I do normally, just now I’m at home so it’s making assignments even more tiring. You know? Anyway, I decided to do the Consumer Mashup assignment (3 stars). For this assignment, we had to think of a place where we normally buy stuff, and then think of what we normally buy there, and mash them together into a nice little logo.

I chose to use Giant, because despite living on the other side of campus, I go there pretty much all the time. It’s part of my “I eat all the time” quota. And what do I eat more of than ice cream.

redonegiant

I probably eat ice cream way too often, and I don’t know why. It’s just so good, you know? I get ice cream almost every time I go to Giant, so that’s got to be my biggest purchase.

I decided to take the little fruit pieces/feathers (depending on how you see the logo) and turn them into an ice cream sundae, with a little cherry on top. Typically I just buy little pints of Ben and Jerry’s (Chubby Hubby is the best flavor), but I didn’t think that would translate as well into the design.

Process:

Step 1: Find the logo in a decent size. I used this image from google.

(Decent size can translate to whatever you want, but I try to use bigger images. Scaling a large image down turns out much cleaner than scaling a small image up)

Step 2: Open GIMP and paste the image into a new file

Step 3: Take the little fruits/feathers, use the rotate tool and the scale tool until they were the way I wanted them

Step 4: Select one of the little scoops of ice cream using the wand tool, then go to Colors > Colorize and fiddle around with them until they’re whatever color

Step 5: I decided to just free hand a little cherry on top

Step 6: Then export the file and voila, it’s done!

Video Game Cover Mashup

Ds106

Call of Duty; Smash Bros Edition! Fun for all ages! Bring back your childhood and play with one of the famous Mario characters or join the future and enjoy this first person shooter with plenty of exciting action and gore. I thought this would be great idea because the new “Call of Duty; Black ops 3” had just came out and I’ve been playing it non-stop. But I wanted to take this serious first person shooter and turn it into something funny and a bit more childish. So I mashed the two titles together, Call of Duty and Super Smash Bros 4. I took a game that I used to play all the time when I was younger, and mixed it with a game that I play now. I took a picture of the call of duty cover off of google, then used a picture editor on my phone to crop, each of the Smash Bros characters out and simply added them to the cover in places that matched up perfectly. After I just saved it to my phone and uploaded it to Flickr. Here is a screenshot of me editing the picture on the app.

Mashing Friends and Emojis

Emoji face

I seen this assignment and immediately knew who I wanted to use for it. My girlfriend is alway making those enjoy faces and this has got to be her favorite one. She constantly sends it to me, (maybe because I get on her nerves). It’s nice to have all of these fun assignments where I can put my own spin on them. This was very simply all I did was get the two pictures, and combined them together using the popular app “PicCollage”, uploaded it to Flickr and shared it to my blog. I think it is a nice addition!

Sports Mashup !

Here is the assignment for my “Sports Mashup”, I created this using clips from google and converting them into files that Windows Movie Maker would allow me to use and edit. I also added a title and ending slide to give a couple messages before and after the videos. The story behind my montage is that all of the players I used, such as Stephen Curry of Jabari Parker are players that fans and critics talked down upon and counted them out. But each of them payed their haters no attention and kept on working and working and now that are at the top of their games and killing the competition. I look up to them specifically for it!

Stephen Curry had no rank coming out of high school, he didn’t have any big Division 1 offers. Only a few minor D1 and D2 schools. No one seen the small 6 foot 2 point guard as anything but a small body with a little talent. Davidson University gave him the chance, over his few years there he didn’t gain any weight or height but what he did gain was confidence. He started to kill the competition his junior year, averaging 28.6 points per game. Now everybody was seeing how much of a threat he really was. NBA teams started to notice him and he became the 7th overall pick to the Golden State Warriors. He got better every single year since and is now the reigning NBA MVP and also won the 2015 NBA Championship. He silenced all the haters and now has everybody on his side.

Jabari Parker was a little different, coming out of high school he was the number one recruit. He had basically every major Division 1 school knocking at his door begging him to come to their program. He chose Duke University where he became the Freshman of the Year. Drafted number 2 to the Milwaukee Bucks, he was a shoe in for Rookie of the Year but…. he got hurt. He tore his ACL and was out for the rest season. Now the guy who was once on top, had hit rock bottom and everybody changed on him, forgot about him. But that didn’t stop Parker, he got healthy did everything he had to do for his knee. Worked hard all off season for his chance back in the NBA and now he has been killing the NBA with his flashy plays. He is the perfect example of the saying “it’s not about how hard you get hit, it’s about how hard you get hit, and get back up.”
