Rihanna vs Drake

This is my second audio assignment of the week. In this assignment we had to create a conversation between the artists using parts from two or more songs. I chose this assignment because I enjoy watching the videos people put on youtube and twitter when they incorporate lyrics into their everyday conversations. I thought this would be a good opportunity to create one of these by myself. I also thought it would be a fun assignment that I would be able to make using Audacity so I can get better at using it.

This conversation is between Drake and Rihanna. Drake and Rihanna have a long history of being together and then breaking up and then getting back together again a couple of years later just to break up again. Drake is known for being a “soft” rap artist sometimes because he likes to rap about his feelings and his relationships in a sad way, so I thought it would be a perfect conversation if I had Drake spilling his emotions to Rihanna and asking for her to take him back and having Rihanna telling hime no. I used two Drake songs and one that he was featured in and two Rihanna songs (one that actually features Drake later in the song) to create a conversation where each person gets to say three lines to each other. I hope after this conversation Drake doesn’t think about it Too Much.

Conversation:

Drake: “We coulda worked it out, uh, but I guess things change/ It’s funny how someone else’s success brings pain/ When you no longer involved, that person has it all/ And you just stuck standing there/But, I’m gonna need you to say something baby/ Say something baby” (Say Something)

Rihanna: “Nobody text me in a crisis/ I believed all of your dreams, adoration/ You took my heart and my keys and my patience/ You took my heart on my sleeve for decoration/ You mistaken my love I brought for you for foundation” (Work)

Drake: “I can’t help it, I can’t help it, I was young and I was selfish/ I made every woman feel like she was mine and no one else’s/ And now you hate me/Stop pretending, stop that fronting/ I can’t take it/ Girl don’t treat me like a stranger” (Furthest Thing)

Rihanna: “I opened up my eyes, and I finally realized/ Today, today, it’s too late/ You’re fading away” (Fading)

Drake: “You’re still the one that I adore/ Ain’t much out there to have feelings for.” (Own It)

Rihanna: “Things just ain’t the same/ And I’m ready for change/ Go on, begone, bye bye, so long” (Fading)

Assignment: Music Mash

Stars: 4

I created this assignment using Audacity.

I played the songs from my phone and recorded and trimmed them on Audacity.

Step 1: After opening Audacity, click the record button at the top to start recording the song and then the stop button at the top to stop recording.

Step 2: Click the selection tool at the top and highlight the parts of the recording that you want to delete and then click Edit -> Delete.

Step 3: When you record another song using step 1 again, you can click on the Time Shift Tool at the top to move the recording to where you want it to start in relation to the recording(s) that you already have.

Step 4: Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until your conversation is finished.

Step 5: Step 6: Click File -> Export Audio to save your conversation.

We Were Already There

Are We There Yet?-Changing the concept of a photo by altering the background of the image.

The Story Behind the Story-

The kinds of adventures you have with your high school buddies are often not really adventures at all. Limited by funds; legality and transportation, the range of possible activities are dwarfed compared to your weekend aspirations. But if you’re cast among a group of people with the exact right chemistry, these non-adventures become something else entirely. In my junior year of high school I alienated myself. School was hard, AP chemistry was making me feel stupid and I wanted to hide from the world. I began spending most of my time alone, making up excuses as to why I would unavailable for yet another weekend plan. But as senior year came around, I was plucked somewhat reluctantly from my solitude and landed somewhere strange.
I had always had friends in school, I was on plenty of sports teams and was inherently social. But something about my junior year had taken all of that out of me, and suddenly I was being coaxed into socializing every weekend. This group of friends were not innovative in their hangouts. There was nothing truly unique about our plans, but everything felt unusual. We placed ourselves in the same basement doing the same activities each night. We played Super Smash Bros and classic card games, we listened to new music and talked about politics. New people filtered in and out of our weekend get-togethers, but the core of the group rarely changed.
I usually felt like more of an observer than a participant at these gatherings, but I felt wanted there. Even if I didn’t have much to say, there was always a place for me. I felt like an ethnographer, diligently taking in the antics of a group I was only just becoming familiar with. I watched freestyle rap battles and listened to the guys of the group as they formed a circle to talk about their emotions, all with Frank Sinatra playing in the background. Our time together was never really based on creating fun or experience. There was no desperation to enjoy a moment or give the impression to onlookers that we were having the time of our lives. It was always about conversation, debate and not being alone. We didn’t feel like we had to manipulate our surroundings or circumstances to have a good time together. The original photo in this gallery was taken during one of the truly adventurous events of our time together. We began a tradition of renting an Airbnb during summer and winter breaks to keep in touch throughout college, this photo was captured on Skyline Drive in Luray, Virginia. No matter what backdrop I place behind to original cutout, the photo is such a clear representation of what we have always been as a group: Simply taking it all in, wherever we go, whenever we get there.

The Tutorial-

This project was relatively straight forward, although I definitely ran into a few issues. To begin, I selected the photo that I wanted to use and opened GIMP. I then used the free select tool to cut out the people in the photo:

Once I had completed the selection process, outlining the portion of the photo I wanted to remove, I clicked Edit>Cut.

From there, I opened another photo in a new GIMP page. I got all of my photos from StockExchange.

With the new background open, I clicked Edit>Paste and the picture I had recently cut appeared over this background photo. I moved the picture around to position it, however I could not figure out how to shrink this pasted image.

Additionally, I was having trouble finding the “move” tool at first and had to re-do the image several times because I kept accidentally cutting out portions of the new photo. I eventually found the “move” tool under Tools>Transform Tools>Move. After many frustrating attempts to resolve the issue, I settled on simply showing a portion of the cut out image in the final product.

My favorite thing to do in my spare time

For my second assignment I had to record myself preforming my favorite hobby in my spare time.  It was 4 stars, and I decided to do it with me playing video games.  I do a lot of other things in my spare time, but video games is defiantly a big part of my spare time. When i’m not sleeping, playing soccer, working, or doing homework I am probably playing video games.  It is my way of relaxing and taking a break from the world.  When I am playing video games I always play with my friends, and this creates hilarious memories.

IMG_3523.MOV

This is just one of the games I play called Rocket League.  The point of the game is to protect your goal, while trying to score in their goal (just like soccer). You control a little car that is used to smash into the ball to shoot or pass. You can play with just yourself against computer players or with real people to compete online against other real people.

To create this video I took out my iPhone and opened the camera app.

I then proceed to record myself playing the game for about 30 seconds.

Sia and Beethoven

One of the assignments I chose to do this week was Classic-Modern Mashup, worth 4.5 stars. The goal of this assignment was to take a modern music video and combine it with a classical composition.

I chose to use Sia’s Chandelier music video and Beethoven’s Fur Elise composition. I I chose the music video for Chandelier because I remember thinking it was an interesting video when it came out and I still think that. I chose Fur Elise because it was one of the first classical pieces that I learned to play on the piano and it has always been one of my favorites.

In order to create this video, I used the QuickTime Player application on my computer to do a screen recording of the music video on YouTube, as downloading videos from YouTube legally is a tricky thing. I got the video from Sia’s Vevo page on YouTube. To get the audio from Beethoven’s Fur Elise, I used QuickTime to do an audio recording of the piece from Georgii Cherkin’s YouTube page. I combined the video and audio pieces together using the iMovie application.

First, I chose the Modern theme for my video because I wanted it to just be simple.

Then, I imported both the audio and video clips by selecting File>Import Media, and selecting the pieces.

Following that, I simple dragged and dropped each of the files into the “Media” area in the iMovie window, aligned the starts and finishes, and then saved the project.

I had to attach the link because WordPress would not let me upload the video since the file was too large.

Summer Nights and Springsteen

The purpose of this assignment was to create a mash up of a band’s or artist’s greatest hits, in your opinion.

I chose to create a mash up of what I consider some of Bruce Springsteen‘s greatest hits. I chose to look at Springsteen’s songs because I had been listening to his songs a lot lately and figured more people should have the opportunity to hear some of his work.

The five songs I chose to create a mash up of were, Born in the USA, My Hometown, Glory Days, Dancing in the Dark, and Born to Run. I did not have a particular order to the songs in the mash up. However, I did start with Born in the USA because I felt a greater number of people would be able to recognize that song whether they were an avid Springsteen fan or not.

In order to create the mash up I used Audacity. I had the five songs in my iTunes library so I simply imported them from there into Audacity. Once they were imported, I trimmed each of them using the Trim tool. Then I proceeded to use the Time Shift tool so one song started when the previous song ended. Finally, I added the Fade In effect to the beginning of each song and the Fade Out effect to the ends,  so they flowed together better.

Here’s the final product.

This assignment was worth 3.5 stars and the link can be found here.

Blast From The Past

Audio #3: Music Mash

Has anyone ever asked you, “if you could be born in any other decade what would it be?” When I get asked this question I always say the 80’s. I love the clothes they wore at the time, the movies they made, and the music that was written (for examples of each click the links). For this particular reason I decided that for this assignment I would do an 80’s mashup. This assignment involves taking songs that are similar and creating a conversation with them. See if you can discover what the conversation is about in my mashup below!

For copyright purposes I wasn’t able to post the following mashup to SoundCloud.

If you couldn’t crack the code on what the song was about, then it’s time for me to spill the beans. The songs I used in order of appearance were: Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astely, Every Rose Has It’s Thorn by Poison, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper, I Ran (So Far Away) by A Flock of Seagulls, Tainted Love by Soft Cell, and Love Is A Battlefield by Pat Benatar. The conversation I made with these songs is between a boy and a girl. These two individuals were dating, but as time went by the girl wanted to break it off.

To break the audio down further, the conversation commences with the boy telling the girl that he’s Never Gonna Give You (her) Up, which she replies to with Every Rose Has It’s (his) Thorn. I incorporated this song because I wanted to send the message that the girl finds a lot of flaws in their relationship, but the guy replies with Time After Time. The clip I used from that song is supposed to display the guy’s commitment to the girl. However, she is not convinced so she replies with I Ran (So Far Away). After failed attempts into trying to convince his partner, the guy’s mood changes with Tainted Love. I wanted to end the conversation with a powerful song, so I chose Love Is A Battlefield. This last song is said by the girl to the guy letting him know that relationships come and go, but in the end it’ll be alright.

In order to do this assignment all you need is Audacity. If you do not have the program you can download it here. In the section below you will discover how I created my mash up by following the step-by-step procedure. Good Luck!

Procedure

Step 1: Open Audacity and go to the file tab. Select the import option and click the audio subcatergory. Upload your first song. In this instance it would be Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astely.

Step 2: Next, highlight the beginning of the song that you want and select the trim audio tool (where the mouse is located on the screenshot)

Step 3: Repeat step 1. The next song that should be uploaded is Every Rose Has It’s Thorn by Poison.

Step 4: Once your second song is uploaded repeat step 2.

Step 5: After you’ve selected the section of the song you want you are going to move the audio of the second song, so that it plays directly after the first. This can be done by selecting the time shift tool (shown in the second screenshot)

Step 6: Keep repeating steps 3-5 for each song. The list order for the songs should be as follows:

  1. Never Gonna Give You Up
  2. Every Rose Has It’s Thorn
  3. Time After Time
  4. I Ran (So Far Away)
  5. Tainted Love
  6. Love Is A Battlefield

Step 7: For Love is a Battlefield (or for your last song) you want to make sure that it ends smoothly, if you didn’t pick the ending of the song to be your final audio clip. What you want to do is highlight the last snippet of the audio (shown in screenshot below), go to the effects tab, scroll down and click on fade out.

Step 8: Go to the file tab and select the export audio option.

Step 9: When saving your new song double check that you save it as an MP3 file. If you do not have the option to save as an MP3 go to this website and download the plug-in for Audacity.

iMovie instructional video!

This was my first ever instructional video, and I must say, it turned out very well! I decided to create an instructional video by placing subtitles to the video so that the viewers can learn much easier. Seeing visual representation is very helpful for me so I figured that it would be the same for future ds106ers. I added the subtitles onto video as well as the background music. I had to look up how to record the screen and I’m glad that I found the way to do so. I’m so happy that I had this chance to help out prospective ds106 students! =D

Captain U.N.C.L.E.

The last assignment I decided to do the assignment called Two Movies, One Line which was worth 3 and ½ stars. This assignment satisfied the 12 stars requirement of Mashup assignments. This assignment was to pick one line from two movies and combine them into one line. The hardest part was picking two movies especially picking a line that would correspond with the other. It took a long time because I had to search the different video scenes on YouTube and watch them to find the line that I liked.  Once I found the two lines: one from The Man from U.N.C.L.E and another from Captain America Civil War, I converted both YouTube videos to mp4 so that it be easy to edit and combine them. However, since I do not have an apple computer I could not use it this time so I had to download one that worked. I used the app called Easy Movie Maker to edit the videos which I was surprised on how easy it was to use. All I had to do was trim the videos down to only view the lines that I wanted. Once I combined the two lines, I uploaded it to YouTube. Overall, I like the idea of mixing lines from different movies and I like it so much that I would recommend this assignment to anybody!

A Dog’s Life

For this assignment, I found a clip featuring an adorable dog who seems to be quite jealous and also likes to be petted. I used iMovie to cut the part and recorded my voice over it. Enjoy!
