High School Memories

Not much is known about when or where Victor attended high school, but it’s become apparently clear that he shares a striking resemblance to a man named James Rives. Is there any connection there?

That’s for you to decide.

I mashed the photos together in Windows Movie Maker and converted the song using a YouTube to MP3 converter, then added captions to my pictures.

This assignment was worth 4.5 stars.

Highlight Reels!

This assignment was called “Highlight Reels”, you were supposed to take an athlete and create a highlight tape for them! So the athlete I chose to you was the one and only James Baylor, MYSELF! I used the highlights from my last season and mashed them all up together using windows movie maker, I got to add a picture and description of myself for the intro and threw a little mix tape instrumental I got from YouTube. I just used converted the file into a mp3 format and inserted it into the background. I had to lower the volume a little bit because at first it was a bit over bearing. Hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it!

AaronLine Bling

When I saw the assignment where I could make a music video my mind immediately went to the Hottest music video right now Hotline Bling by Drake. In his music video he just dances with a shite background and different colors so I decided that I would just make a video of myself as drake in the video. Enjoy!

This is a 5 star video assignment for Ds106 titled Create A Music Video. I made this by recording myself multiple times dancing to Hotline Bling and then mashing those clips together and changing the color of the clip in imovie

“Remind Me Someday”

We all remember the infamous Nickelback mashup, “How You Remind Me of Someday.” However, Chad Kroeger and company aren’t the only musicians with similar-sounding songs. For this assignment, I suggest that participants use Audacity and SoundCloud to pull off the same infamous stunt as before, but with another musical act of their choosing. It can be Nickelback, again, for optional authenticity, but the focus of this challenge will be on the variety.

(WARNING: This is only for comedic effect. This is a parody of the original mashup, and you’re not supposed to take this seriously, and just have fun with it. This is one of those occasions where the learning experience gained is more important than the final product made.)

Remind Me Someday

The following is a step-by-step breakdown of an original concept of mine. It should be noted, before we start, that this is a parody of mashup tracks, in that the results will most likely be far less than desired and far more than hilarious. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy listening to the final product as I’ve enjoyed making it.

For starters, you need to download the audio editing software of your choice; in my example, I will use Audacity. After you do this, it would be wise if you plan ahead, and think of which musical acts you remember that you think had at least two songs with, more or less, the exact same beat.

Remind Me Someday 2
Remind Me Someday 3

In my case, I went with three attempts at making a backwards-sounding song out of two forward-sounding tracks: “Livin’ on a Prayer” mixed with “You Give Love a Bad Name,” both by Bon Jovi; “I’ll Be There For You” mixed with “If I Was Your Mother,” both also by Bon Jovi; and “Jeremy” mixed with “Even Flow,” both by Pearl Jam.

When you figure out what pair you want to mash up, I personally recommend looking on YouTube for any available audio footage, of the songs you wish to use. The reason is that you need to copy their URLs onto another site, specializing in MP3 conversion, as that’s one of the only available forms of audio media that can be successfully imported to, and exported from, Audacity.

Once you’ve memorized the URLs connected to the songs you wish to use, find a YouTube-to-MP3 site as soon as possible; if it’s available, paste your copied URLs onto their search bar, one at a time, and click the button that converts the audio into the necessary MP3 file. Make sure to save the downloads, once the options come up, before taking part in any future steps; without these files, you won’t have anything to mix. Transferring the newly-downloaded files onto a memory card wouldn’t hurt.

As soon as everything’s saved, it’s time to use Audacity, but not before taking the time to know which tabs trigger which effects, so as to avoid any potential mistakes you could make along the way.

By the way, one thing about the MP3 files you’ve just downloaded is that they play your chosen songs in their entirety; this is where things really start to get tough for you, as now, you have to edit the songs in such a way that as much of the similarities you first noticed regarding your two songs are also noticed by future listeners. If you happened to mess up during the editing process, you can still go back by pressing the Control and Z buttons on your keyboard, together, to redo the intended edit from where the botch took place; pressing Control and Y together will, eventually, return you to your most recent edit.

Once you’re satisfied with everything you’ve done, be sure to save your final draft as a software-exclusive file, before exporting the audio onto an MP3 file, as that is necessary for transferring audio onto SoundCloud, or another audio-based website.

From there, all that’s standing in your way of another accomplished assignment is yet another round of the usual paperwork. Log onto your SoundCloud account, upload the newly-edited MP3 files – preferably with the necessary tags, obligatory catchy title and detailed description – and, once everything is filled in to your liking, just hit the “Save” button.

The most important thing to remember from this task is that you have to have fun with it. You’re not going to get the perfect mashup on the first take, if at all, and even the one that this challenge is named after – the infamous “How You Remind Me of Someday” – needed a bit of editing to reveal the fraud being parodied here. Ultimately, the whole point is to provide a high-impact exercise of your use of Audacity, just to make sure you know how hard the producers of your favorite records have it, and I believe that experience, alone, is more than worth the five stars I give it, as its one of the easiest challenges you’ll face in DS106, as well as one of the toughest.

A Dinner with the Red Reaper

Assignment (3 stars)

After cooking all afternoon, the Red Reaper finally arrived at my house a little after 6:00 PM. This was only the day after we had finished recording our segments for the Edward Creeper Show, so we were both still a bit worn out. However, I thought it would be nice to sit down and learn more a little bit more about this mysterious character.

We began with a chopped salad, followed by a heaping serving of mashed potatoes and my famous homemade chicken florentine. I wasn’t quite sure at first what I should fix, since our only prior communication had been on set. But, he ate it all, so either it was indeed a good meal, or he did a good job faking it. Anyways, we talked a lot about my show, and how I ended up as the host (that is a story for another day, however). We discussed more in depth some of the horror movies he previously reviewed, but he still didn’t seem too impressed with any of them. I even tried to show him a few scenes from my favorite movie (A Nightmare on Elm Street), but I could not convince him. But, everyone has their own opinions and views, so I respect that.

We finished the night with a slice of apple pie and some vanilla ice cream, and talked about what the future held for us. As you may have heard previously on my show, the Red Reaper has a film coming out very soon that he seemed considerably excited about.  I certainly hope that I can make one of the showings for it, as I am very interested to see what kind of horror style he works best with. As for me, I spend most of my time finding topics for my show, and interviewing characters such as the one I was sitting across from.

After finishing our desert, the Red Reaper headed back out in the world. It certainly was an interesting evening, and I am glad that the Edward Creeper Show allowed me to befriend such a unique character. Who knows who I will meet next?

I chose this assignment, because it seemed like a fun way to incorporate two different characters from ds106. Also, we had just finished our radio show last week (which included the Red Reaper), so I thought it would be interesting to see how these characters would interact outside of the set.

Hello Designer Fireflies;

I love Owl City. (I actually met Adam Young earlier this month and I cried) So, naturally, I picked a few Owl City songs for my Greatest Hit’s assignment (3 Stars).

It starts with Designer Skyline from the album Of June. Then, On The Wing (2008 Version) from Maybe I’m Dreaming (my favorite song, though the version on Ocean Eyes is better). Following is a song from Adam’s side project, Sky Sailing, called Captains of the Sky from the album An Airplane Carried Me To Bed. Fourth is Hello Seattle from the album Ocean Eyes. Fifth, Real World from the album All Things Bright and Beautiful (my personal favorite album). A newer song is sixth called Thunderstruck from the album Mobile Orchestra. I threw a track Adam put on his soundcloud called Halcyon in because it’s fun and upbeat, and gives the song about a minute of time. Of course, what would an Owl City mashup be without Fireflies, which finishes out the mashup, though this version is Adam’s remix.

These are not his “most popular,” aside from Fireflies, but these are some of my favorites that go together.

To create this, I had to pick which songs I wanted first. I decided I wanted one from each album, then I picked from there. I sent the files through an online converter, then opened them in Audacity. I grabbed sections I thought would transition well, copy/pasted them into one track line, and then added fade in/out to help the tracks transition easier.

Copyright: All music belong to Adam Young/Owl City.

Enjoy!

&&-Guess The Songs-&&

Another Audio/Mashup Assignment Bank project yay! This one is called “The Contest Nobody Could Win” which is not entirely true as I feel like if I heard these under 1 second clips I could tell which song they came from. They are good recognizable clips but to win you need to have a similar taste in music!

Anyways~ this was worth 1.5 stars and the answers are listed below! I really did try to pick more recognizable songs.

Answers:

Handlebars- Flobots
Help I’m Alive- Metric
Never Wanted To Dance- MSI
All We Got- Fergie
Glory- Hollywood Undead
Iodine- Icon For Hire

Put On Your War Paint

You may not realize it, but I am a huge Fall Out Boy fan! I already used one of their songs in the mashup assignment during audio week, and I saw them in concert this summer as well! Fun fact: I used the same song for the mashup AND this assignment! What can I say, besides it’s one of my favorite songs!

I think that they are great lyricists and really use their words wisely and lyrics to their advantage! For 4 stars this week, I completed the Lyric Typography Poster assignment.

Choose one of your favorite lines from a song and illustrate it using only typography. Consider how the font, color, sizes and placement of the typography can reflect or emphasize the meaning of the words.

To create the lyric poster, I started from scratch using Photoshop. (First time EVER creating something completely new in PS!) I then changed the background color using the paint can, and then added each line of words as a separate text layer. I chose burnt orange as the background color, because I was going for something that was similar to the color of bricks.  I then manipulated each layer until it was to my liking.  I had to play around with creating the lines and boxes, because that was not as easy as I thought it would be… I actually had to copy the first brick and create each additional one in a new layer, because I couldn’t figure out how to copy multiple bricks in one layer!

FOB Lyric Poster v2

I had a really fun time creating this poster and completing this assignment. I think I might do another one, just for funsies!  I might actually get this printed as a poster, I love it that much!

In case you are not familiar with the song “The Phoenix” you need to be educated…

Apophenia- visual assignment 1255

In order to figure out what exactly this assignment was, because I didn’t really understand I looked at these two blogs (2 separate hyperlinks). I didn’t like how much they covered up the original image so I tried not to do that in my project, but I thought the coffee cup and the candle were a really good idea for this project. I began looking for idea in my room and living room. A friend suggested the lamp, but I didn’t really like that suggestion until I stood on our chair and looked down into the lamp and then I saw the possibilities.

IMG_5403

In order to complete this assignment I downloaded several different Windows applications including: Adobe Photoshop Express and Crayola Photo Mix & Mash. However, neither worked very well. Photoshop just did basic filters and the Crayola one had limited color choices unless you payed. So I resorted back to my trusty Paint. I decided to use my touchscreen and stylus to get a more accurate drawing.

simon says

The first one I did was a Simon Says board from when you were kids. In case you don’t remember it’s the game when you have to follow the color pattern that lights up and the pattern gets progressively harder and harder.

swingset

The next one I made was a playground scene. I originally was just going to have the swing but then I likes the idea of making a secluded world inside of this circle. I also like, what I just noticed, that the girl kind of looks like shes sitting on the edge which would have been a good idea too. As I start writing this up I find a lot of new ideas I could do. Like a bike tire, a trashcan, a barrel/ monkey’s in a barrel.

mixer

The last one I did was a mixer mixing brownie batter in a really long bowl haha.

The Process

First I took the picture and opened it with Paint. I had to resize the image in order to make it a decent size. To do this without making the image fuzzy you have to use the resize button not just drag the corner. Then a box appears that looks like this5

The numbers always say 100, as it 100% of the size and then you can make it 50% and it will be half the size of the image. After this I began coloring.
8

In order to color this image I had to zoom in so i could see the lines. I also had to use the dropper tool to copy the color of the wire so I could go over the parts that I colored over with the colors. I used either the paint brush or marker and varried the size depending on the area I was coloring.

6

I tried to use the dropper to copy the color and cover up the line, however the lamp had a lop of differed shades on it and it made it really hard. So I tried to cut out strips and cover up the line.

7

This way worked better. In the above image you can see where I selected a rectangle.I then would not move it but just copy it and paste it and then continue pasting and moving to different spots until the line was covered up. After doing this I then also painted over some spots to blend it better.
