kanariya – animated gif assignment –

Hallelujah, this was a pain.

Welp, I never thought the day would come where I would create a gif by myself. I thought it would be a bit easier, however I was wrong. So, so wrong.

First off, let me tell you how frustrating GIMP is in terms of creating a gif from a video. I downloaded the latest version for these assignments specifically and looked up how to create these suckers using a mac. It seemed fairly easy enough; I was able to download the video I wanted and cut it down to the main portion I wanted capture. BUT THEN I REALIZED. To create gifs from videos, you have to get every freakin’ frame. That’s fine and dandy WHEN YOU HAVE GAP FOR GIMP. To my ultimate concern, GAP does not exist for Mac but does for Windows…my freakin’ luck. So I had to figure out a plan…I had to go to the cheap source itself; Giphy. Please understand, while yes, Giphy can make Gifs, I specifically used it for retrieving the frames in which I then ushered over to GIMP and conducted my business like a sad champ. It did work, though I am quite upset with this stupid development of why doesn’t GAP support GIMP.

Anyways, the animated gif assignment I went with for today was the favorite musician gif and I bring to you the biggest pain in my butt of a graphic I’ve ever dealt with:

kanariya

Here comes the explanation: the artist I chose was Ayumi Hamasaki and the video I chose was her performance of her song “kanariya” from a fairly recent concert of hers. This performance is rather beautiful and Ayu herself is so incredible and still a mother freakin’ queen even at the age of 38. The song also holds a special meaning to me. The lyrics are rather…dark… (“It’s not that the canaries whose voices were crushed to death couldn’t cry“) but it symbolized a point in my life where I was honestly too ashamed of myself for things I had no control over or the horrible things that a select few people opted to do to me. So I think this performance of this song is the best choice I could make.

Did you have any difficulties making a gif? What program did you end up using?

What Are the Chances

GIF #1

For our first GIF assignment I decided to base it off one of my favorite musicians, Chance the Rapper. The video I used is from the music video, May I Have This Dance by Francis and the Lights featuring Chance. I chose this video because most of Francis and the Lights music videos are very minimalistic, which I enjoy. This clip was a little different because Chance gives the video a more playful vibe, while keeping the minimalism of the other band.

At first I chose this assignment because I wanted my first GIF to be somewhat easy. I was wrong. Finding the clip and the specific part I wanted to use wasn’t a problem, it was creating it. Towards the beginning I had decided I was going to give GIMP another try, but all the tutorials I watched were instructions on how to convert images not videos. So I decided to use a different method. Below you can find instructions on how I made my GIF.

Direction 1: To begin, go to this website and enter your video URL, in my case it was May I Have This Dance by Francis and the Lights featuring Chance the Rapper.

Direction 2: Once you upload your URL your video should appear. Pay attention to the start time and the GIF length settings below.

Direction 3: Adjust the start time setting to 2:14 and the GIF length to 7 seconds

Before adjusting the settings

After adjusting the settings

Direction 4: Hit the ‘Create a GIF’ button and then select the download button. Located in the bottom left hand corner.

Get Incredibly Funky

Choose your favorite musician, and then head to Youtube and pick one of their videos to make an animated gif of.

This assignment seemed like an easy and fun way to make my first-ever GIF.

This is a GIF of my favorite artist, Marina and the Diamonds. I was originally not excited about making a GIF because I thought it would be too hard. In one of my previous classes one assignment we could have chosen was to make a GIF and I avoided it because I was under the illusion that making a GIF is hard. I suppose making  a stop motion GIF or a more complicated multi-layer GIF would be more difficult than using Youtube, but this was easy!!

I selected this music video (“Hollywood”) because it was the most appropriate and least weird of all my favorite songs of her’s. The video I was originally going to choose didn’t have a lot of movement, so I figured the GIF of it wouldn’t look very good. I am pleased how this GIF turned out because it has a lot of color and movement to it, which makes it interesting to look at. I chose this section of the music video because I am completing this assignment on Memorial Day, and I thought it would be nice to celebrate the American-ness of this clip.

To create this GIF I researched a bit first (aka I Googled “youtube to gif”) and then started the process. It was very simple and something I will definitely be using in the future.

Step 1: Find a Youtube video you want to transform a part of into a GIF

Step 2: Alter the URL of the video by adding gif, as highlighted below

Step 3: Choose where you want the GIF to start. Click the time shown on the bottom bar to select an initial start time. Then a blue bar will appear that shows the duration of the GIF. You can slide the blue bar around and see which part of the video looks best as a GIF.

Step 4: Click the green check mark at the bottom left of the screen to confirm your selection of GIF start time. There are other adjustments to the GIF that can be made by using the tool bar on the left, but they weren’t needed for this assignment. Once you are happy with your GIF, click create GIF in the top right corner of the site.

Step 5: Download the GIF, or use the other links, depending on what you are doing to the GIF.

Step 6: While using a WordPress blog, click add media and upload the GIF. When embedding the GIF in a blog post it is important to select full size so that the GIF will play automatically.

Angel Wings

I wanted to try and experiment with gifs for the second assignment so I browsed the animated gif assignments and picked the favorite musician gif.

The assignment reads: Choose your favorite musician, and then head to Youtube and pick one of their videos to make an animated gif of. Try to use the best quality video possible, preferably HD.

I immediately knew that I wanted to do a gif of Lady Gaga at the end of her second set at the 2016 Victoria Secret Fashion Show.  The moment where she raises her wings was iconic in my mind. I remember sitting with my friends and watching the show and when she did that, we all were in shock.

This wasn’t my first time making gifs, but it was the first time using a youtube video or someone else’s work. The first time I created a gif was done using stop-motion pictures that I took myself and used photoshop to create it into a gif.

For this assignment, however, I used gifs.com to create it.

What a goddess. Honestly.

For this GIF assignment I was to make a GIF with one of my favorite musicians. I have no idea how to embed that onto here, so you can find the GIF I made here.

The assignment link is here

Steps:

  1. Google how to make a GIF because the link on the week 2 page doesn’t work.
  2. Find Makeagif.com here.
  3. Insert the link of the Youtube video you want to use
  4. Edit to your liking
  5. Post

Favorite Musician GIF

Choose your favorite musician, and then head to Youtube and pick one of their videos to make an animated gif of. Try to use the best quality video possible, preferably HD.

I love things that are involved with musicians and if I had to pick my favorite singular musician it would be Dave Grohl.  I think he is just a really kick ass dude and I think that him breaking his leg and continuing a concert exemplifies that.

To make my GIF of Dave Grohl I searched for concert footage of the Foo Fighters on YouTube.

I searched online for a web based gif maker and finally settles on makeagif.com

makeagif

I then selected the method of YouTube to create the GIF.

insert URL

After the video loaded I then chose the clip of time I preferred for my GIF with a slide bar on the left side of the page.

I then downloaded the GIF onto my Desktop before uploading it into this post. I had to look up on the DS106 website how to get the GIF to animate, and then edited the GIF to be on the page in full size.

Who is your favorite musician? Not going to lie this is a question that holds a lot of weight with me (and there are incorrect answers).

When you see these guys live you can’t take your eyes off of Gord. That is why he is the winner of the Favorite Musician For Me To Make A GIF of in January 2016 Award!

Congratulations Gord!

Sunshine, Sunshine

This is one of the animated GIF assignments I chose to complete for three stars. This assignment required me to select a video of my favorite musician. To be completely honest, I do not have a favorite music artist. I enjoy a broad range of music and what I decide to listen to depends mostly on how my day is going. Therefore, my “favorite” can change daily.

The cloudy skies, frequent thunderstorms, and drop in temperature over the past few days is what inspired me to chose “Sunshine” by Matisyahu to create a GIF. The particular part of the video I use I chose simply because I found it inspiring. Matisyahu is throwing away that extra weight he is carrying around, which in this case is a book bag filled with sand. Then he takes off on a motorcycle into the sunset. Pretty corny, but I think we all need to be reminded to get rid of the junk holding us down and then walk away.

This GIF was created using Gyazo, which I found really easy to use. All I had to do was download the Gyazo program and record the part of the video I wanted. Then the GIF was created, downloaded to my computer, and uploaded here!

Katy Kat

Yes, I am a fan girl. I am fan girl and proud. I loved this assignment (worth 3 stars), we were supposed to create a GIF of a video from our favorite artist. For those who don’t know who I chose, it was Katy Perry and her video- “Hot N Cold”. I’m going to be honest, I don’t think the video has a real consistent plot other than the fact a guy is running from his bride and multiple versions of herself (the song is still catchy though).

The main reason I like Katy Perry is simple- she’s herself. She’s unapologetic about what she wears, who she is, and the music she writes. She’s not portraying herself to be “sweet” or being something that people would like her to be and to me being genuine in a world that requires you not to be speaks more of who she is.

But enough of me fan-girling, the process into making this was simpler than what I originally thought. There’s this really helpful website called MakeAGif. The homepage of the website immediately asks you what type of media you are using to convert into a GIF, in my case I chose Youtube. Then, I was taken to a page which I had to paste the URL of the video I was using. After pasting the URL, the website put it on a continuous loop from the beginning and you type in the start time of when you want the loop of your GIF to start. It then gives you the option of how long you want the GIF to be, since I was a registered member I chose ten seconds but you can chose to have it shorter. Once the GIF is created, I hit share and you have the option to download the GIF.

This looks like a scene from a weird horror-musical movie.
