Audio Assignment: Sound Effects Story

For this story, I used freesound.org and garage band. Ā I am still getting used to garageband, but it’s going a little smoother. Ā I love the audio assignments because it leaves so much interpretation to the listener.

I keep changing my mind as to what is happening, specifically why he is running. Ā It could be that he is running from something or he is running just because of the rain.

Assignment worth 3 stars.

¿Entonces cuÔl es la mala?

For the last of my 4 stars I decided to put my years ofĀ SpanishĀ classes to work. The joke I foundĀ didn’tĀ have a titleĀ unfortunately, so I just picked out a line from it that I thought would work well. I recorded that myself, downloaded the guitar music track and the laughter. The music trackĀ wasn’tĀ long enough to cover the entire joke so I had to copy, paste, and slide it together. Then I amplified the reading andĀ decreasedĀ the volume on the music track.

Teen angst platform

My feeble attempt at dramatic reading. I know I need to work on using my voice better. It doesn’t help that I can’t stand listening to it. You can take that as a warning.

I thought I’d try to do Cracker’s Teen Angst as a political speech. I’m not sure why – the idea just popped into my head. I put a bit of the tail end of the national anthem at the beginning, and used some Freesound crowd noises and applause in the background. I recorded my voice with Audacity, and played with several effects – amplify, normalize, echo, bass boost. You can hear some bass hum in there. Even with amplification, I had to lower the gain on the background noise, and raise it on the vocal. I added more cheering at certain points

Audio Assignment- Where would you like to wake up tomorrow?

This was a challenge. Here’s the steps without the frustrations, agony, and dead ends.

I recorded the Interviews the iphone, emailedĀ and downloaded to computer.

SomeĀ  versions of Audacity ( mine) dont like MP4 files so …convert all files to MP3Ā  using Zamzar. Ā

How do I combine two files into one longer file? Go to the Audacity site for help

Follow these steps to splice two files together:

  1. Import both files into Audacity.
  2. Select the second one by clicking on its label (the area around the mute/solo buttons).
  3. Choose ā€œFind Zero Crossingsā€ from the Edit menu.
  4. Choose ā€œCutā€ from the Edit menu.
  5. Place the cursor by clicking in the first track, after the end of the audio.
  6. Choose ā€œPasteā€ from the Edit menu.

You can press the PlayĀ button to hear the result, and use the Export commands (in the File menu) to save it as a sound file. I exported as WAV file which was uploaded to Soundcloud.

AudioAssignment382: The Voice, ā€œIn a Worldā€¦ā€

InAWorld by annie_belle1 Here is my rendition of Don LaFountaine’s well-known, “In a World…” movie trailer trope. The assignment was submitted by Alan Levine. The assignment calls for creating a movie trailer-esque audio recording about something that is ordinary. I wrote this about Doritos, because I just finished eating a bag of them and found [...]

Songs Mixup

For this assignment, I got short pieces from 6 different songs and put them into once piece. I tried creating the effect of tuning through the radio for this one by getting a sound of a radio tuning off of youtube and inserting it in between each song piece. Can you identify all 6 songs?

Spam My Heart

I made this for Alan Liddell’s audio assignment Taking Back Spam. This is some spam I actually received on the DS106 site.

Man, that’s deep. The song is “E-Mail My Heart” by Britney Spears.

Walk in the Woods: a ds106 Sound Story

I made this demo for my students to show them Audacity and basic editing for the Sound Effects Story assignment:

Tell a story using nothing but sound effects. There can be no verbal communication, only sound effects. Use at least five different sounds that you find online. The story can be no longer than 90 seconds.

Mine is a tale of a quiet walk in the woods, say up in the in the forests of Show Low Arizona.

All of my sounds are from freesound (http://freesound.org/):

Dry Leaves Walking
http://www.freesound.org/people/HerbertBoland/sounds/33207/

Memory Moon Wet Spaceship Loop
http://www.freesound.org/people/suonho/sounds/27570/

phaser
http://www.freesound.org/people/impactuniversal/sounds/63372/

Gulls by the Sea
http://www.freesound.org/people/acclivity/sounds/13564/

These are all in tracks in Audacity. For the footsteps, I copies a segment, and sped up the speed twice, to make for a sound of hurried walking, then running. I also made a copy of the phaser sound and reversed it to make a loop. A few fade-ins, fade-outs, and bam, done.

DS106 Radio Gaga 2: Rebellion

My Lady Gaga themed bumper “DS106 Radio Will Set You Free” was probably my favorite thing I made last year, so for my first contribution to the audio unit this year I decided to make a followup.

This one uses songs from the album Born This Way, including:

  • “Heavy Metal Lover”
  • “Judas”
  • “Bad Kids”
  • “Americano”
  • “Yoü and I”

I also used this radio tuning sound effect from freesound.org and a quote from this interview.

After watching @scottlo & Rowan Peter decipher wtf is going on with cogdog and learning that the answer lies somewhere in the network I came across this audio advice. It’s not quite a bird call but when navigating networks, it just might work.
