TALKING BACK IN TIME

? Gotta get back in time
Gotta get back in time
Get back, get back
Get back Marty Biff
No seriously, get back. ?

Huey Lewis, Melody, And The News

Great Scott!

We’ve gotta go back Ds106! Back to the Future! For this Audio Assignment, Soundboard Conversation, we had to “create a conversation between yourself and your favorite movie character using an online soundboard!
To find soundboard clips, check out http://www.soundboard.com/.”

I was originally inspired to try out this assignment after listening to the hilarious example, ‘ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER DOES IT SUPPORT,’ By Robert Grotans. I was cracking up at this faux convo and knew I needed to create my own. After searching through the list of films on Soundboard, I came across the hit 80’s classic, ‘Back to the Future.’ This is what I had been looking for. I played with the idea of doing a conversation with Marty or Doc, but there weren’t very many good clips from them, and especially not ones where they aren’t talking to/about each other. They say the other one’s name in most of their sentences, so that didn’t really work for my purposes. And then I noticed a full page of Biff sound clips. Now I had something to work with.

After listening to all of the Biff sound clips, I started thinking of his words out of context. I wrote up a script where I basically filled in the blanks. I.e., when he says, “who’s gonna pay the cleaning bill?” a natural reaction to that sentence would be something along the lines of, “what are you talking about? What cleaning bill?” I then ordered all of the Biff sentences and my reply sentences so that they flowed naturally as a believable conversation.

I recorded my parts separately, silently reading Biff’s parts and then reacting to it with my lines. I brought my audio into Audacity along with the Biff sound clips, and stared combining the two tracks together. Eventually. The Biff clips were mono, and my recording was stereo. I learned how to fix this and thought I’d share:

1) Select the mono track and do Edit > Duplicate.
2) Click the down arrow on the left-hand side of the track were the name is and click ‘Make Stereo Track.’
3) Do steps 1 and 2 before doing anything else to your project or you will have to start over. (Unless you don’t plan to combine the tracks).

After combining my tracks, I noticed that the Biff tracks sounded pretty out of place to my recording. While I couldn’t completely mesh the two together, I did learn a few things that help:

1) select the tracks with extra background noise. Do Effect > Noise Reduction > Get Noise Profile. Go back to Noise Reduction, and click ‘OK.’
2) Add a background noise track to your audio! I used a couple of outside ambiance noises from Freesound, and used the envelope tool to reduce the noise in places.
3) You can use the ‘amplify’ effect to quiet your tracks too! Just slide the bar to the left.

I now had a phony conversation with Biff! Admittedly, my track isn’t as funny as Grotans’ is, as harassment is no laughing matter. But, it was still entertaining to pretend like I was having a beef with Biff.

Here’s my final Soundboard conversation:

Well this is interesting.

Soundboard Conversation: Hanging out with Snoop Dog

https://soundcloud.com/mikey-barnes-180369384/snoop-dog-convo

For this assignment, I was supposed to make a conversation with my favorite movie character. This assignment is the Soundboard Conversation audio assignment, which was 4 1/2 stars Snoop Dog, though prominent for his rap career, does have his share of movie personas. He has been my favorite character in a number of movies and always provides entertainment. So for this conversation, a couple of friends and I decide to go check out his house as we are curious at where our knew friend lives. So we head out to good ole Beverly Hills to hang with our good friend Snoop. He shows us around the place, but is very particular about where we go, so we decide not to stay too long, he seems to be in a bit of a mood. I will be back though to take on the former collegiate basketball player in a game of 1 v. 1 and that’s a fact.

Final Project Tutorial 5

The assignment was Soundboard Conversation worth 4.5 stars. This was a blast because I got my Ewok to call Arnold Schwarzenegger!! I rehearsed what I was going to say about 7-8 times and used the soundboard found here:

http://www.ebaumsworld.com/soundboards/arnold-schwarzenegger-soundboard-4/1879/.

It has most of Arnold’s most important sayings. I just kept clicking away until I got a conversation I liked. I used PowerDirector to record the conversation and add a phone ring at the beginning.

Yub calls Tut

I saved the file as a WMA (Windows Media Audio) and uploaded it to Soundcloud.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Does IT Support

I use to work as IT support, but I’ve also been on the other side of IT support as well. This led me to pick this DS106 assignment as a way of telling my experience with IT support. The assignment Read more…

When Sally Confronted Rick

In continuation from When Rick Met Walter, this is the conversation that immediately follows the death of our dear friend Walter.  I can’t imagine what Sally is going through right now. I wish her the best of luck in the coming days.

For 4 stars this week, I completed the Soundboard Conversation Assignment.  In order to create this conversation, I first found clips from soundboard.com that I thought had great potential for a conversation.  I then recorded responses as if Sally was responding to what Rick has done, and then stitched the clips together using Audacity.  I didn’t write a script or anything for the responses, they were all ad lib, so I had to do a few takes for some of them, but overall, it was not that difficult!

Soundboard Conversation

The first assignment I did this week was called “Soundboard Conversation”. It was worth 4 stars. Here is the assignment page.

For this assignment I had to create a conversation between myself and a movie/tv character using an online soundboard. I chose to have my conversation with Gus from my favorite tv show, Psych. I used a soundboard clip I found on soundboard.com. In this clip, Gus is interrogating Shawn, the other main character in Psych, because he has been following him without his knowledge. I used the the audio editing software Audacity in order to silence the parts of the audio where Shawn was talking. Then, I recorded myself talking in the gaps that used to be filled with Shawn’s audio. Here is how our conversation turned out.

If you were wondering how the original conversation went with Shawn and Gus from the show, I included that as well.

The Newest Who Companion: ME

4 stars Soundboard Conversation http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/soundboard-conversation/

I have always wanted to be in an episode of Doctor Who, so even though this assignment said favorite movie character I decided to stretch its limits to TV and make myself a companion. Also if we are being honest most DW episodes play like movies.

I received the audio used from soundboard, youtube, and the music from my own iTunes library!

I am geeking out over how this turned out just a bit!

Dory & Me

4 Stars

I decided to challenge myself and go for another 4 star assignment for this week. I did the SoundBoard conversation assignment. Before I go off into detail about what I did for this assignment, I would first like to ask where the heck SoundBoard has been all my life?! I love all the sound effect options and I’m wondering how I overlooked it for so long… Anywaysssss, down to business.

Basically, I went on to SoundBoard and just randomly search through the movie sound clips they had and then I got a random idea that I could have a conversation with Dory from FINDING NEMO! I chose this one because that is like my favorite movie ever, and two because I feel like Dory and I relate on many levels.. Scary, I know. So I found a few clips that I like the best (particularly the “do ya, DO YA?!” one and compiled them together in audacity with me responding to her! Hope you enjoy! :)

Soundboard Conversation with Elvis

4 Stars

When I was looking through the sound board website and saw Elvis Presley I just had too. I am a huge Elvis fan, however I wish the sound board had more usable clips. Again I used Audacity for this assignment. Coming up with the conversation was hard at first, but once I figured out what direction I wanted to go it was easy. Having only his section of the conversation was complicated to match mine up too. Asking questions for answers that were already there. To get some of the clips I wanted I took small clips of larger ones. This allowed me to get certain words or phrases that I wanted. For example the “Thank you very much” was part of a much longer clip, but I only wanted that tiny part. It was also kind of funny having a conversation with Elvis. The editing and piecing together was the easy part.
