Scary Sound Effect Story

This assignment was a lot of fun! I went through freesounds.com and found some clips that fit what I wanted to do with my story. From there, I placed them into Audacity and changed some things around. With some of the shorter clips, I decided it would be best if I rearranged them or had to occur more than once to keep with the rhythm of everything else. For the longer ones, I mostly left those alone in order to establish some sense of continuity and balance. Having said that, I feel like I treat this story more like a song and I like the way it sounds!

Imagine a man. He’s sitting inside his living room, scared. Outside is a ghostly wailing he’s all too familiar with, followed by the thud of a spectre banging against the wooden doorframe. As the man sits there, cold and afraid, he can’t help but scream when realizing the depth of his terror. Chains rattle around the door as the ghost continues to bang. Bang. Bang. Until finally it breaks in! It whips its chains around the man’s neck and snaps it! All that’s heard is the ghost’s banging and one final scream.

Edward’s Humble Abode

Assignment

This scene depicts what my horror character Edward hears outside of his manor every day. As you can tell, it sounds like a peaceful and relaxing place to live, but it may be a totally different story as to what lies inside.

For this assignment, we had to create a story using at least five sound effects, and no dialog. To complete this assignment, I found my sound effects on freesound.org, downloaded them and imported them into Audacity. I then edited it to get my finished product, saved it, and uploaded it to SoundCloud.

Story without Voices

This is an audio assignment worth 3 and 1/2 stars and the task was to make a story only using sound effects. I had a blast doing this and I thought I would do a story that would pertain to the theme of this class. I hope you enjoy!

The Headless Ballerina’s Fateful Leap

I was pretty nervous as I started this assignment! It took me the longest time to figure out what “story” I wanted to portray through sound effects. I’m not quite sure why it took me so long, it should have been smacking me in the face!

So for my story, I decided to portray the death of my horror host, The Headless Ballerina. She begins her last ever performance with a huge applause, everyone loved to watch her dance! She walks out on to the stage, and hits her opening pose. For this performance, she is wearing her pointe shoes, which are very loud and clompy! She then began her ballet routine, filled with many arabesques, grand battements, and sautés. During her final combination, a beautiful tombe, pas de bourree, glissade, grand jete (leap), instead of landing her leap on her feet, she managed to leap off of the stage and thump onto the floor. The entire audience went mad, screaming at what they saw. Why was it so horrific? Well because she happened to fall into a huge pile of lighting equipment, slicing through her neck. Of course, a member of the audience called an ambulance immediately, however it did not show up in time, and The Headless Ballerina was already on her way to horror host land.

The making of this assignment was really quite simple (once I chose my storyline). I made an account with http://freesound.org and chose different sounds. Finding the thump, ambulance, and crowd cheering then screaming sounds were a piece of cake! Figuring out how to make the rest sound like a ballet dance en pointe wasn’t quite as easy. I found a recording of walking in high heels, which I thought sounded similar to walking in pointe shoes. Next, I found two other recordings of walking and jumping in slippers, which I thought sounded like the various noises pointe shoes make while you dance. Once I chose all my clips, I compiled them into Garageband, and arranged/cut them accordingly. Then I saved it to my iTunes, and uploaded it to Soundcloud. I hope you all enjoy my story!

The Making of a Thunderstorm

ThunderstormTo create this story I used sounds of: birds chirping, wind, leaves rustling, thunder, lightening, rain, and birds chirping after rain. Each sound was playing at different times during the recording.
p.s. my microphone is awful!

A day in the life of Blair…

Blair is my host character for this semester.  As you all may know Blair is currently unemployed due to past trauma that she has encountered.  Blair has a morning routine which she faithfully follows on an everyday basis.  I have recorded sounds from Blair’s morning routine to share with you all.  Try to guess what the sounds are!  I will list the sounds in order below…..

  1. Creaking door and footsteps
  2. Pouring cereal and milk into a bowl
  3. Eating her morning cereal
  4. Cleaning the cereal bowl
  5. Starting the shower
  6. Blow drying her hair

For this assignment bank photo I had to tell a story using 5 sound effects.  I hope you enjoy it.  You can find the assignment at http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/sound-effects-story/.

A Day in Dennis’ Life

Dennis, the intellect host character of my blog, lives in a house on the east side of Saint Croix. Every morning he wakes up and then goes out on his sailboat to do some scuba diving. Today his scuba is cut short due to a storm rolling in. He gets home and watches the rain from his front porch while listening to the sounds of the storm.

This is a audio assignment worth 3.5 stars for ds106 “Sound Effects Story”
