Look Ma! See What I Learned!?!

My skills have blossomed, and so has this photo collage! What was once a static set of five photos is now a photo video with background sound. Wonders are not ceasing. I took the five images from VisualAssignment2109 and decided that if these are supposed to be Places of Peace, then there should be sound effects to go along with them, to give the viewer a much broader experience. I did the project in Canva, first importing the five photos and with the video feature, putting them in frame for 12 seconds each so the piece would be a total of one minute in length. Then I found background meditation music on freesound.org and added it to the file. It was actually pretty easy once I had learned that this was all possible. When I first did this assignment, I did not know about Canva, freesound and how to add still photos and audio to a video file.

My Places of Peace by Jenny Holbert

The second assignment I improved upon was AudioAssignments75, SongStory.  With the original, I had a lot of difficulty figuring out how to use Audacity and I recorded directly onto Audacity tracks from my laptop speakers for both my voice track, then from YouTube.  It sounded very thin, hollow, metallic–you name it.  I still don’t have all the answers but this is MUCH better.  This time, I recorded the voice and background music using my iPhone and converting them to MP3 files, then importing them to Audacity.  Since I am still not adept at manipulating Audacity, I simply moved the music to start a few seconds after the voice began and lowered the volume until the voice was over then brought the volume up at the end.  Those small adjustments took me plenty of time and frustration because I kept adding a loop somehow so had to delete the whole file an start over again.  The second time, I kept it simple, got it done with an overall much cleaner, more polished product, and went on to the next assignment, claiming success on this one.

A Defiant Song Story

I always had a determination to insist on fairness so when AudioAssignments75 came up to write a Song Story, something popped immediately in my head. From the time of my memories, I’ve thought about fairness and why being male or female was such a big deal when people thought about what someone should or should not do in their lives. When Barbra Streisand sang Don’t Rain on My Parade in the movie Funny Girl, in 1968, it made perfect sense to me and became my personal anthem. Then, when I needed a song for the talent portion of the Miss Waukon pageant for which I was conscripted along with six of my other friends, the song fit. At least for me, although I may have been 50 years too soon to perform that song for a beauty, errr, “scholarship” pageant.

This song, as a mantra of sorts, would have pleased Bob Ross, even if it’s not specifically about joy. It is about living a focused life and one of fulfillment. Set your goals and live your dreams-follow your destiny!!

The photo below is right out of my 1974 high school year book, taken with my iPhone. The glasses are wire-rimmed octagons–just a few years out from contacts. I’m thinking the hairstyle is actually trending again!!

For the audio piece, I learned that I could record the song directly from YouTube to Audacity and I followed the directions exactly. The recording sounded very “thin” and did not have good fidelity but it was the best I could come up with, so that was a disappointment. I still used the music but also used the Envelope Tool and reduced the sound to a minimal level so the poor quality wouldn’t be quite as noticeable. I also used just a small clip in the beginning, then a little longer clip at the end. It wasn’t necessary to play the whole song, so that was fine.

I recorded my voice track directly on Audacity using the guidelines I found online. I was surprised that the silence between my sentences was not recorded so I re-recorded my track and I heard the same problem so then understood that Audacity stops recording when there is no sound. So I either need to change the recording settings, or silence somehow between sentences. I have noticed this in other Podcasts and thought it was an effect that editors were using, but now I’m wondering if it’s in the recording software. Regardless, that was a second disappointment.

I thought about inserting a portion of the song in the middle of my script but my frustration level was too high at this point and I decided that I met the terms of the assignment so I finished with adjusting the music at the end, and exporting the file.

Song Story

There are a ton of songs that bring back memories but one of my favorites is “When You’re Smiling and Astride Me” by Father John Misty. Daniel and I met online and enjoyed talking to each other so much we decided to meet. On the day we met, he gave me a tour of downtown Fredericksburg since I was new to the area and just got to know each other better. Although both of us were still nervous, we didn’t want to say goodbye to each other. Instead of going back to my dorm room, I walked to the parking deck with him. Instead of him driving away when we reached his car, he told me to get in. He started his car and played that song. It was in that moment I realized he was something special. Everything between us clicked and I knew without a doubt I wanted to be with him. It isn’t a song typical 19-year-old guys would listen to and that stood out to me. I listened to that song on repeat for the rest of the night after we eventually parted ways. Over a year and a half later, we still listen to that song because it’s special to both of us.

When You Are Smiling And Astride Me

This assignment wasn’t hard since I already had this song downloaded on my laptop. I just imported into audacity. The song is pretty long so I just included my favorite part in the clip. I used the fade in and fade out effects since I cut some of the beginning and ending out. I thought it’d flow a little better like that. I chose to speak at the beginning just to label the assignment so I’d remember what it’s for.

Memory Lane

Archives

For this assignment, I chose to take a stroll down memory lane. The assignment is to pick a song that reminds me a certain time/place/or memory and then talk about it.

I chose “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” by Journey. It always reminds me of my junior year in high school. That was the only year I ran cross country (I ended up breaking my ankle and requiring surgery that spring) and this song was basically our theme song!

One of the memories that really stands out for me is at one of our meets. It was in the fall and pouring ran. The whole team was soaking wet, covered in mud, and just miserable in general. We were all huddled together in the tent, sharing the only 2 blankets anyone thought to bring when one of the coaches opens the tent flap and just stares at us. He just turns around and leaves but comes back a minute later a boombox, sets it in the tent, presses play, and walks away again. Next thing you know, this song is playing! It took a chorus or two but by the end of the song, the whole team was up dancing and singing along! I think our boys team might have even won that meet! I know it sounds super cheesy but I’ve always felt like that song changed our whole state of mind that day.

Even to this day, that song always brings me back to that moment and the fun I had my junior year in general since we were forever playing that song for the rest of the year.

Washed Out and Away

For this assignment I had to choose a song that made me feel nostalgic and explain why. I chose the song It All Feels Right by Washed Out.  This is the perfect summer song that really brings me back to just a summer of no worries and responsibilities.

Listen to my post to hear more of my thoughts on this song and even listen to it!

If you would like to listen to Washed Out, the Spotify artist link is here.

For this assignment I used audacity to record and import the song file. After I recorded my story I went through and edited the track to remove the “umms” and create more natural pauses. This took a little longer than expected and is just as tedious as I thought it would be. Besides that this assignment was simple and didn’t have any hiccups.

Down Under

First off, if I ever buy music from Google Play again, I’m an idiot. Trying to do things legally is such a pain in the ass, and I am never leaving iTunes again. I almost burst into tears of frustration more than once trying to a) ascertain if I had even bought the damn track and b) trying to figure out how to download it so I could actually, you know, do the assignment. Seriously, Google, your Google Music is so user unfriendly I don’t know how it’s survived.

This assignment was the 2 1/2 star SongStory. I chose Down Under by Men at Work because it’s a very important song to me, as explained in the track. First, I uploaded Men at Work into Audacity, then I recorded myself telling the story. From there, it was pretty easy to mix the two. I did Fade In and Fade Out for the song on either end of my audio, though, since the song was a lot louder than I am. I typically stuck one of my bits in right before a chorus, to give it a deliberate feel (rather than random and willy-nilly). The hardest part (besides getting the music, but you knew that) was figuring out what I wanted to say and how to say it.

I’m pretty OK with how it turned out, mainly because I could cut out all the “um”s from the storytelling pieces. I say “um” a lot, apparently. Also, my voice is more high-pitched than I realized. If I ever do this again, though, iTunes all the way, baby.

Cactus In The Valley, A Story;

Here’s a short memory from last fall.

To make this, I first downloaded Audacity. I converted Cactus In The Valley (Feat Adam Young) to a .WAV file using an online converter. Then, I wrote out my thoughts so I didn’t stumble my way through this. They flowed fairly smoothly, to my surprise. I put one ear bud in and recorded my words while listening to the spacing in the song. Sent the recording from my iphone to my laptop, loaded Audacity, and loaded up the audio tracks. I selected clips of the song that played over my voice and brought their levels down a bit using the amplify feature. (Side note, if someone can explain how to de-amplify without it sounding so choppy on the ends, I’d appreciate it!) Once I had it all sounding to my liking, I exported it.

SongStory

For the “Song Story” assignment I used Garageband to record my audio. I’m going to let you listen in order to get the explanation for my song choice.

Wouldn’t it be nice?

The first audio assignment that I chose to do was titled Song Story (***). For this assignment, the task was to pick a song and talk about what memory that song triggers when you hear it.

Picking a song was a little hard. I feel like every song triggers some kind of memory for me – whether it be positive or negative. For this assignment, I wanted the memory to be a positive one.

So I chose Wouldn’t It Be Nice by The Beach Boys. Here is my song story:

I made this song story with Audacity. I changed the volume of the song while I recorded my memory. I wanted the song to still play in the background while I was talking. What I ended up doing was recording the song {from my iTunes} on audacity first. I turned down the volume while I said what I was going to say in my head. Then, I recorded me saying my story. The timing was a little off, but I fixed it with the Audacity tools. Here is what my work looked like:

Song Story Work

I Go Back.

SongStory by Jerry [3/10] Stars

I chose to take part in this audio assignment because of the song, I Go Back by Kenny Chesney. I have country roots and this song is my home-run song… LITERALLY it makes me feel like I am back home. This song has so many lyrics that just mean the world to me. The song talks about church, believing, faith, lost of a loved one, young love. It pretty much describes me in a nutshell. I love this song and play it almost everyday. You can jam it to or even cry, this song brings you to emotions you didn’t even know you are feeling. It’s a powerful anthem.

I chose to first display the song to its entirety. For my actual assignment, my SoundCloud link is following the directions in that I played the song and then spoke a bit about it(:
