911, What’s Your Emergency?

MY DOG IS A FIRE HAZARD!

My dog is a LITERAL fire hazard! Puchi, my Chihuahua has this insane habit of moving her beds around the apartment, in very inconvenient places. And for some odd reason whenever my roommate Tala goes to sleep, Puchi moves her bed RIGHT IN FRONT OF TALA’S DOOR! After this bed moving discovery, my other roommate Stella decided to nickname my dog, Puchi The Fire Hazard.

This phenomenon sparked my idea for the 911 Emergency Call Assignment! I voiced the caller, Stella voiced the voice cracking 911 call taker, and I even included Puchi (who voices herself).

In my imagination, this is what a 911 call to the police would be like if my dog was the emergency. Without further ado, enjoy my 911 emergency call! ?

What is an emergency? 9-1-1

Everyone has a different view of what could be an emergency. I have worked in first response for a little while and what some people view as en emergency I look at like daily issues or just another day at the office.

This assignment is to kind of to make fun of the system and add the all the calls I will hear daily. I pulled this assignment from the bank from a past member oddly enough. There are some interesting calls we see so I decided to make my own call based off of this call.

This just came from the ideas of work. This hits home to all the crazy calls that we don’t say are real reasons to call 9-1-1. The calls that come out and when we hear the tones drop continue to shock me even when I think I have seen a lot. Maybe if people see this they may start to understand why not to call 9-1-1. The few memorable calls that we remember long term, are the weird ones that like Indiana Jones will get into. He will do these crazy trips that result good for him but our patients normally don’t end up as well. I was able to watch Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom because I had it on VHS. This was made to help others realize some of the crazy calls we receive here. The call volume has increased so much since the 80’s and the units have improved since then to where they are now and how much the technology has improved and how to turn the equipment on.

This is an example of some of the calls we get and some interesting people we get to meet.

I used Audacity to record different sounds of my voice and making the script up. I added some of the noises from the sirens on the ambulance and a sound of buggs bunny to get the answer of the person’s house we arrived at. I was recording my own voice and and playing with the effects of my voice.

This has been an exciting process, that I have learned a lot about audacity and how to mix the sounds over each other and fade in and out when I choose to. I have learned how to use the software and I feel like I am getting better with soundcloud and being able to upload my data and embed it into this blog. This has been a big learning curve for me so far, when I am trying to still figure out the ins and outs of the software.

Where is Becky?!?!

Since it was valentines day this week, I thought I would take the drama to the next level. This was a lot of fun….I would suggest this to anyone!!

Stop Taking the Internet so Seriously

This is my response to the 911, What’s Your Emergency? assignment worth 3.5 stars. All recording was done in Reaper. I used built in plugins to remove background noise from the recordings and I played around a bit with the equalization of my voice. I chose to make this project relate back to the semester’s overarching theme of the internet. This is the story of someone who sees something offensive on Twitter and freaks out. This story is a reference to how people take stupid things said on the internet way too seriously sometimes. If you are someone who does this, I am asking you, for the good of the world, to please calm down. The 911 operator’s willingness to immediately act without even hearing what exactly happened is a reference to the tendency of the media and of individuals to jump to irrational conclusions based on incomplete evidence. In an era where information is readily available in mass quantities, we must take special precautions to monitor and analyze all of the data we take in.

Burgers

Well, that was pretty strange. I was having a pretty average day until this guy called. I wonder what his problem was. Demanding a million dollars, buying a million burgers, insulting the operator, something definitely was up with this guy. I do hope he is okay because he seemed to be in a lot of pain before the call ended. He was probably was jusy drunk and hungry, but I guess I will never truly know.

For this three and half star assignment, I decided to make wacky 911 emergency call. I was originally going to use the episode of Spongebob Squarepants where a guy was screaming chocolate, but I decided to go with this YouTube Poop video below that I found about burgers and a million dollars. Don’t worry, YouTube Poops don’t involve actual poop.

Just like my previous audio assignments, I used Audacity to help put together all of the audio and record my voice. I mainly used the Split tool under Clip Boundaries to grab certain parts of the audio from the video to make this 911 call amusing and weird.

The final part of the creation of this audio assignment involved me using the Time Shift Tool to rearrange the audio I spliced up earlier to help give it flow. I also used it to make sure that all of the different pieces of audio were in order before exporting the assignment.

Hungry 911 Caller

This is the story of someone who is extremely hungry and wants a home cooked meal but doesn’t want to make or order food. For this obvious emergency the person called 911 and this is the conversation that ensued:

The 911 operator took one for the emergency line and sent the caller a pizza to make them not hungry, hopefully everyone ended up happy and safe.

To do this assignment I got inspiration from being hungry myself and not wanting to make food or call to get food delivered. I then thought about how the operator would respond and I thought they would be confused and then just fix the problem to keep the emergency line free for real emergencies. This was a 3.5 star assignment for Ds106 titled “911 What’s Your Emergency

911, What’s Your Emergency?

You can find this assignment at http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/911-whats-your-emergency/ and its worth 3.5 stars for this weeks assignment bank requirement.  I used audacity and my cell phone.  I wrote out a short script, read it and altered the pitch of my voice with Audacity.  It didn’t take too long and was easy enough to do. I do want to say that 911 should only be called during a real emergency.  Please don’t call a real 911 operator as a gag or joke.

We’ve Run Out Of Coffee, a sound bite;

DISASTER.

3.5 stars

I had a ton of fun with this one, and it was super simple. I did not write a script, I kind of went with what came to my mind. I love coffee more than I can adequately put into words. So of course my emergency would be there is no more coffee! I recorded the sound clip all in one take on my iphone, emailed it to myself, converted it into a .WAV online, and then uploaded it into Audacity. I took the “caller” clips, and dropped the pitch 3 whole steps (I believe). I exported it and uploaded it to soundcloud since I knew there would be no copyright trouble.

Parking Spot Bandit

Most people don’t get to call 911, and you never get to call 911 unless it’s a true emergency. Well here’s your chance to “Call 911” and have some fun! Create a recording of how you think a 911 call would play out. It doesn’t have to be a real emergency at all! Operator: “What’s your emergency?” Caller: “THERES NO PEANUT BUTTER FOR PB&J SAMMICHES!!!!” Get creative!

For this 3.5 star assignment, we were instructed to make a mock 911 call. Originally I used Audacity and attempted to play with the changing of pitch, however that didn’t really work in my favor. Something also must of went wrong along the way when it came time to upload it to soundcloud it wouldnt let me (hoping to solve that issue soon), so I had to record directly from soundcloud. This go round I couldn’t manage to stop laughing and I had to have my boyfriends brother be the caller, if you listen closely you might hear a slight giggle towards the end. I played the dial tone at the end of the 911 call to make it seem like the caller truly got irate and hung up, this is the soundclip I used

of course I didnt use all 15 minutes of the dial tone. Listen to the call below, enjoy!

911, What’s your emergency? – Audio Assignment

For this week’s ds106 audio assignment I chose to do the 911 What’s your emergency  assignment.

I am keeping this assignment in line with my focal theme of the experiences of a new mother.  Sometimes I wished there was an emergency hotline to call for those first few weeks of being a new parent.

My sound clip below addresses the issue of meconium bowel movements, a baby’s first bowel movement within the first couple days of life (don’t google that, really don’t do it).

Notice: Don’t listen to this if you are squeamish about bodily fluids or are eating…  Enjoy!

To complete this assignment, I wrote up a short script and asked one of my co-workers to be the operator (Shout out to Joy, thanks girlfriend!).  I recorded the “phone call” on my LG G3 smartphone.

I ran into some problems when I tried to use Audacity to edit my work.  My phone recorded the file in a .3gp format, which Audacity does not recognize.  I found online converter but it only converted the first 40 seconds of the file.  Eventually I fell upon media.io which converted the file properly for me.

Once my source file converted I started looking for sound effects.  I found all the effects on YouTube. I used the Audacity recording feature to record my system audio.  You can find tutorials on how to do that here (note if you are using a Windows 7 or 8 PC you will have to turn on Stereo Mix, instructions here).

I put it all together, uploaded the finished project to SoundCloud and embedded it here in my blog.  You will have to excuse my horrible acting, performing arts was definitely not my calling!

You should only call 911 for a real emergency, not if McDonald’s runs out of Chicken Nuggets.
