Jimmy Hoffa

Missing Person Assignment

I’m such a sucker for a good mystery and the one surrounding Teamsters’ president, Jimmy Hoffa is a good one if you’ve never heard of it. His disappearance is one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in American history and has inspired numerous conspiracy theories because to this day his body has NEVER been found! Isn’t that crazy? You would think in this day and age we could find anything, but even after all the speculation and years since his vanishing no one can locate his gravesite or body. However, it’s less of a whodunnit and more of a where the hell did they put this man’s body?!

To make this poster, I found a great template on 4themissing.net through my Word application. Then I researched all of Jimmy Hoffa’s actual characteristics. This actually yielded something interesting for me because I never knew how short he was. (This may be dark but the theory that he was stuffed into a oil drum sounds more plausible now that I know how little he was!) I included all of the real details about his disappearance from the Detroit restaurant under the circumstances section. Also, I put the link on the bottom to this hilarious site asking their users to “find Jimmy Hoffa”. Yes, people are still searching after all these years! Finally, I exported it as a JPEG so I could insert it into this post. As with all of my photos, you can expand it by clicking on the image.

I really hope that I live to see Jimmy Hoffa being found and this assignment allowed me to rediscover this famous mystery. That being said if his body were to be found in my lifetime, I might miss the joke. For example, a couple weeks ago, while at a storage unit with my mother to help a friend clean out their space, we passed by a storage unit that smelled awful. When asked what was likely inside, my mother responded: “Jimmy Hoffa’s body.” I guess the moral of this blog post is that, though Hoffa’s disappearance is tragic, it makes a pretty decent punchline. Or maybe the moral is don’t hang out with mobsters?

Missing Person: Jesse Pinkman *NO SPOILERS*

Screen Shot 2016-05-25 at 9.29.45 PM

Here is my poster for the Missing Person (3.5 stars) design assignment. I decided to use Jesse Pinkman who is a character in the TV series Breaking Bad. Don’t worry, if you have not seen the show or are currently watching this will not spoil anything. I know there is at least one person in this class currently who is watching it for the first time.

Behind the Creation

As you may of noticed with my Tickling Walter White video assignment, I am a huge fan of Breaking Bad. In my opinion it may just be one of the, if not the, greatest TV series in history. I am currently re-watching the entire series again, and it is still just as good the second time. I wanted to do this assignment since I wanted to try to use the template options available in the Pages software for Mac and see how well I could design a poster for this. Also, if you have seen the show then you might understand why I chose Jesse Pinkman for this (again, do not want to spoil anything).

The Process

I found Pages to be quite simple to use when I was making this. It worked very intuitively and it felt pretty free even though I was using a template.

I created a new document and chose the Lost & Found Flyer template as the starting point for this assignment. After I selected the template, I clicked “Choose” in the bottom right corner

I removed the place holder text from the top part and typed in “Missing” and changed the text color to red. The I selected the text box and changed the fill color from the right menu. I decided to go with black.

Screen Shot 2016-05-25 at 8.46.52 PM

The top part now changed to a black fill color.

I clicked on the image of the dog and in the right menu went to the “Image” tab. Here, I was given a “Replace” button so I could change the image to my own image. I clicked the button and opened the image file I had downloaded on my local computer.

The image is now replaced to the picture that I desired. I went through the same process for the bottom part below the picture that I did for the top part. I removed the place holder text and changed the fill color for the text box.

I then filled in the information I wanted for the bottom part. Then finally I inserted a text box by clicking “Text” on the top menu. I entered the text I wanted in the text box and moved it to where I wanted it. It is a free moving text box so it can be placed anywhere.

Justin Bieber is Missing!!

For this Design Assignment I chose to do the Missing Person poster. I knew I kind of wanted to do something that wasn’t taken seriously, and I also knew I didn’t just want to make a random character up. I started thinking of celebrities that are really popular and always in the news, and who pops right into my head? Justin Bieber. Every time I’m going through my Facebook or listening to the radio I swear there is a new story on Justin Bieber, whether it be him going crazy, doing illegal things, or finally changing his act. One thing that is always brought up about Justin Bieber is his on and off again relationship with Selena Gomez, which is changing every day. I hinted towards this in the poster in the “last seen” area; I wanted to make it seem like Selena Gomez could be a suspect in his disappearance.
For this assignment, I created the missing persons poster on a website called canvas.com.

Missing Person

Missing Persons Agnus and Nash

This post was not too difficult.  I was able to look at Jenna’s characters and create a missing persons sheet from her description of her character and incorporate mine into the missing persons situation.

One of the Gals is MISSING

MISSING

Help me, Sally, find my good pal Tallie who has gone missing! She was last seen at her ranch wearing her ranch working outfit (jeans, boots and a button up) on Sunday around high noon. If anyone has any information please tell the Sheriff or me, Sally, at Tumbleweed Saloon in Tombstone, Arizona.

The poster was made using canva.com. I also made this a collaboration assignment using one of my group members characters going missing and my own looking for her and putting these posters up.

This assignment was worth 3.5 stars.

Have You Seen This Stranger? – ds106 Design Assignment

I love The Big Lebowski and one question keeps drawing me back into the movie every time I see it is – What is The Stranger doing in L.A.? Is he on the run? Does he have family in town? Is this his vacation? But I never find a satisfying answer. The ds106 design assignment I chose gave me a chance to think about he people back home for The Stranger and to give them a hand in finding the lost cowboy. Design assignment 1888 asked to create a missing person poster and I made one for The Strangerstranger wanted poster

The process of making the poster was enjoyable. I did some research about Sam Eliot, the actor who played the stranger, to have actuate age (in 1998 the year The Big Lebowski came out), weight, and height. I also used a fake telephone number with an area code for Deadwood SD, because I wanted to connect with a real location that I view as having cowboy roots. This has been a fun activity and I am going to keep the template and let my students use it to make posters for characters from the books they are reading!

Help!

Flyer

For this assignment, we had to create a missing flyers poster of anyone we wanted. I chose to do Shrek, one of my favorite cartoon movie characters from when I was younger. I used Microsoft word to complete this assignment and actually had a lot of fun doing it! It was fairly simple, I just created different text boxes to get the look I wanted. I can see how this assignment relates to design because I had to choose the colors I wanted to use, had to choose the layout of the flyer and then also pick the type of font the I thought would fit best. Overall I am happy with the outcome and hope that the town of Far Far Away finds Shrek!

If Found, Please Call..

Missing Person: Create a missing posters flyer for a fictional movie/show character, made-up person, animal, or a real person. Be sure to include a picture, the name, characteristics, and last seen date and place. Let your imagination do the talking for this poster! (4 stars).

I made this design assignment for my final narrative!

I wanted Edna to create a missing persons poster, just like humans do when they post “Lost Dog” posters!

I used Microsoft Word for this assignment. I decided to use a handy template called Lost or Found Flyer. This was for a dog obviously, but I changed it for the project.

Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 3.08.28 PM

Having said that, I didn’t have to change much! I inserted a picture of myself, and changed the text a little. For characteristics, I ended up writing “Black eyes” & “White hair”, since dogs can only see in black and white. I thought this was a funny element for my project. I tried to be in the mind of a dog, just like Edna would! This may have been the trickiest part.
