Not a Movie Watcher

Original DS 106 Assignment: Favorite Movie Quote (2 stars)

I promise that I will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.* This is my version because my mom does not like me swearing, on anything. Seriously. I am NOT a good movie watcher. I will fall asleep 8/10 times, even if we are at a movie theater. I wish I would have slept through the Multiverse of Madness because it was a bit too gory for me, SPOILER. Watch that trailer below!!

This is the start of my graphic design career for people who have ADHD and need more to draw their attention to a movie poster. I have been contracted by Marvel to use the above trailer to use my point of view to make a better movie poster than what they already have. This calls for Canva.

Step 1: Open Canva at canva.com

Step 2: Upload the photo you want to put the movie quote over. I took a screen grab from the trailer itself, with a quote (SPOILER ALERT).
Wanda is a mom… or she wants to be… but like many people she can’t have kids, lost the love of her life and is lost. And that drives some to insanity. The unthinkable and unrepairable was done, will there be an end?

Is Wanda that bad? Violence is never the solution… but what can you expect from someone grieving. Is there ever a real solution?
My favorite quote from the movie had such a cold tone in the movie that it made the hair on my arms stand up.

Step 3: Use a font that emphasizes the emotions that is intended to come from the text. Play around! There can be some from templates that apply (I found mine on the first try), or you may need to scroll past Comic Sans to find the best one.

Step 4: SAVE! As complicated this can be with stickers, different font, different size, etc. as a movie that comes from the MCU that needs a lot of context, this can still be a quote that mothers everywhere can relate to.

Oh Captain, My Captain

Yes, this is Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society, one of my favorite movies of all times. But that is not the famous quote that I chose for Design Assignments 1974, “Favorite Movie Quote.” I do have the famous scene of Williams standing on top of the desk, because he is making the point that you need to see things from a different perspective. Then there is the quote below about how you need to start now to find your voice or the longer you wait, you may never find it. Robin Williams played Professor John Keating in the 1989 film that received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

I used Canva to create the piece and found the image on the internet, looking for a vertical image with an area large enough to put the quote that was either dark or light so I could offset the text with a contrasting color. I chose the most memorable scene in the movie for greater impact with the quote. The image is really grainy but the movie was not shot in HDMI so I doubt a better quality is available in the free, public domain. I found the quote by doing a search for Robin Williams quotes and since he would have turned 70 last year, I landed on 100 of his most memorable quotes from his movies, interviews, TV shows, etc. I thought I was going to use one of his quotes in Week 5 so I had saved them but didn’t need them, so it was handy that it was ready for my use in Week 6.

Of all his wisdom, I find this one to be most profound because I believe each person needs to speak up and speak their truth. Whatever it is, they should not be silent and let the rest of the world speak for them. Each of us is given the gift of a brain and a voice in some capacity and we need to exercise it. It is our right and our responsibility. Otherwise, we are just checked out and creating greenhouse gases.

“You must strive to find your own voice because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. by Jenny Holbert

Just keep swimming

When thinking about this assignment, I kind of came up with a bunch of different ideas.

A Cinderella Story – “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.”

Grey’s Anatomy – “Pick me, choose me, love me.”

The Notebook – “If I’m a bird, you’re a bird.”

I ultimately decided to do the famous Dory quote, because I think it’s something that everyone needs to remember.

I went on Google and simply looked up Dory to find the perfect picture to depict the quote. I then went on Canva to include the quote.

I think this quote goes extremely well with the course theme “The Joy of Painting,” because no matter what is happening just keep going. If your creativity isn’t sparking, just keep trying. Things will work out in the end.

Favorite Movie Quote

The movie Ratatouille, is one of my all time favorite movies. This movie brings me so much joy to watch and to talk about. My freshman year I took a public speaking class, and when asked to make a presentation about one of our favorite things, I chose to make a presentation about this movie. This movie is full of a plethora of great quotes. But this is my all time favorite one, even though it is a tough choice to make. I also love that picture from the movie when Remi is looking over at Paris. It’s such a beautiful and joyful moment from the film that I love seeing. To me, this movie shows me that even a kids movie can convey such strong and powerful emotions and messages. If you haven’t seen this movie in a while, I would highly suggest watching it through an adult eye and perspective.

Design Assignment: Favorite Movie Quote

The Nightmare Before Christmas has been on my mind since the end of August and my favorite character is Oogie Boogie so I’ll use his famous quote (and then go watch the movie for the millionth time). I also really love Jack so I just decided to do one for both of them. I also used these quotes because I know all the words to the songs.

why did you drop out of yale!

Choose one of your favorite movie quotes and insert the quote over an image from the movie you chose.

For this assignment, I actually used a TV show, Gilmore Girls, because I quote it a lot. In this scene, Jess was yelling at Rory for dropping out of Yale (someone had to). I found the picture of the scene on google and used Canva to add the quote over top. I used Canva for a lot of these design assignments which I think has been working out the best!

“Why’d it have to be snakes?”

For this assignment, I added a famous quote from a movie to an image of that scene within the film. I found the image through a google image search, and already knew the quote pretty well too. If I’m not mistaken, this is also an 80s movie. I used canva to overlay the quote onto the image.

Come with me if you want to live!

“Come with me if you want to live” became an iconic phrase of the Terminator series. Terminator was released in the 80s and became one of the most popular movie franchises of all time. One of the most famous movie quotes originated from the series and is exactly why I decided to do this design … Continue reading “Come with me if you want to live!”

Favorite Movie Quote

Bad Boys for Life is my favorite movie for 2020 hands down. I didn’t come into the movie theaters with a lot of expectations because I didn’t watch the first two. But boy, was I impressed. The action, the plot, the climax, the suspense, the music, the acting, everything was on point. It kept me on my toes the entire movie and I wasn’t disappointed at all. Usually, it’s hard to continue a movie series but they did an excellent job. This quote is a very famous quote that Mike Lowrey (Martin Lawrence) says in the Bad Boys saga. The picture is from Bad Boys for Life.

For the assignment, Favorite Movie Quote, I went to Google and looked up an image from Bad Boys. I found one that was from the current movie and saved that to my computer. Then I looked up a quote that was used from the movie. After that, I went to Pixlr and added the quote using the Text button. I changed the font to Artick to make it stand out within the picture. I saved the image and then embedded it here using the Image button.

Favorite Movie Quote

I love movies, they are truly one of favorite guilty pleasures so this Design Assignment was an obvious choice for me. The prompt involved adding our favorite movie quote to an image from the movie.
Honestly, it will be hard for me to document my process for this assignment because it just came to be so naturally. My favorite movie is Fight Club and I knew immediately what quote I wanted to use. The most difficult part was finding a photo I wanted to utilize but I eventually found one that would be easy to recognize for even someone who is only vaguely familiar with the film. Once I found an image I liked, I put it in Publisher and set about finding the right font for my text bubble.
Enjoy and remember the first rule of Fight Club is you don’t talk about fight club!
