Our FUTURE Bill Board!!

So instead of just doing the regular assignment which was to take a poster and change it to propaganda that supports the class, I decided to make a sort GIF to promote or convince people to take this amazing class, and I put on a Bill Board instead of putting it on a regular poster because I thought it would be…

Fight For DS106!

Propaganda Poster Edited

For this Design Assignment, we had to turn a old World War II propaganda poster and make it for ds106. I chose to take poster take warned about the wastefulness of driving alone, you can see the old poster here, and turn it into a poster about commenting on others pages. I chose to take this route, because they both stress the importance of two activities that require others to really make a positive impact. I also knew commenting in such a big part of our class.

To complete this assignment I took the picture into Photoshop and created new captions. I also erased Hitler sitting in the passenger seat and mirrored the driver to the other seat to show “commenting with yourself”. I finally cleaned up and noticeable changes from editing.

Original Assignment (3 Stars)

This assignment was pretty difficult for me because I am not that all familiar with photo editing software, but this was fun at the same time for me. I simple googled “World War II Propaganda Posters” and I noticed the iconic Uncle Sam poster right away and I decided to use that. I wasn’t sure if anyone else had done this particular one already, and I apologize if did, but I decided to go ahead and use it anyways because of it’s symbolic value back in the day, and also the colors and fonts present that made it alluring to me. I based my design from above on this original image:

I don’t have photoshop installed on my computer, so I simply googled a free online version of it. I removed the “US Army” and “Nearest Recruiting Station” and replaced it with “DS106″ and “Nearest Computer Station” respectively. The way I did this was I tried and replicate the original fonts as best as possible (the application I used didn’t have the matching format used in the original poster). I removed the original layers and implemented the new ones with the new text in place of the original spaces.

Overall, I think this assignment was pretty fun though it was frustrating because I never had used photoshop before and I know that and/or GIMP will become important in this class. So it was a great learning process and hopefully I will be able to learn more about, although it was tiring at times trying to figure out what tools were which.

I thought this was a really neat assignment and something that I had never done before. I am quite a novice to digital design and thought this would be far more difficult than it turned out being. After searching though Google images for a bit I settled on a poster which promoted increased weapon production and thought it would a good ds106 poster. Here is the original..

Since I don’t have photoshop I uploaded it to pixlr.com which has a decent variety of photo editing tools. I started by erasing the bottom text box and replacing it with my own text and a different shade of brown. I then filled in the heading text to match colors. The next part was a bit more difficult. I erased the red lettering and filled it in with a light blue color to match the background. Then I put in new textboxes and researched on how to rotate text. After figuring this out I was pretty much done.

I must say I really enjoyed this assignment and I learned a lot in a short amount of time. I know some aspects of it could be a bit cleaner but it was a learning experience and I think I can build on this.

We Want You!

When I think of WWII propaganda, I immediately think of the Uncle Sam’s “I want you” for recruiting soldiers. So of course when I saw this in the redesigning posters post on week 6, I thought of that right away and had it planned out what I wanted to do. I used the picsart app on my phone which I use to make all my collages and put wording on pictures because I love all the fonts and everything!

Propaganda Posters- (3 Stars)

After seeing the instructions for this assignment, I knew that I wanted to do this. We had to take a World War II propaganda poster, and use editing software to recreate the poster to encourage or promote the DS106 class. The overall process to edit the poster was not very challenging, however finding the right software to use for the picture was very tricky to find at first. Once I found the right software to use, the rest was pretty easy and very fun! The first step I took was to take the original picture and put it in an app called Photo Eraser.  Once it was in the app, I was able to erase the text that I wanted to replace with my own words. After that step was complete, I took the edited picture and uploaded it to another app called Fotor. From there it was pretty simple, I created a text box and added the words that I wanted into the poster.

Growing up I was very interested in the history of Word War II. Going through elementary school, whenever Word War Ii was talked about in class the one poster that everyone knows about is the Uncle Sam “I Want You” poster. This poster was used to recruit men and encourage them to enlist into the U.S. army. It is one of the most famous propaganda posters not just of WWII, but of all time. Another personal reason I wanted to do this assignment was I had family who fought for both sides during WWII. My great-grandfather on my mom’s side of the family fought for Germany during the war, while my grandfather on my dad’s side of the family was a U.S. soldier during WWII. Anytime I can do something that involves WWII history, I was enjoy it.

We can do it!!

Ds106 WWII propaganda poster. We can do it DS106!! The idea behind my poster is motivation for our DS106 section. The poster comes from the very popular Rosie the Riveter poster from WWII to show that the support behind the war was coming from the home front. Also to advertise that women were taking on former male dominated jobs while the men were away at war, and that they were able to do it. We are already in week 6 and moving right along. So keep on working hard guys we got this.

DS106 Propaganda Poster

Original Assignment (3 stars)

I thought this was a cool assignment, since I like to dabble into designing (album covers, promo posters) from time to time. There were some really good looking World War 2 posters that I came across on Google. I must have searched about ten pages deep before narrowing down my top 3. Quality and size played a big factor, as I like to have the highest quality images possible before anything takes place.

I ended going with this poster dealing with the topic of security. It read, “Don’t be a sucker!”, “Keep Your Mouth Shut”. The image was some sort of fish jumping out the water to bite a hook. It was pretty slick I must say.

I decided to change it slightly to relate to DS106. Everything remained the same except the bottom text. Now that I have Photoshop installed on my laptop, I imported the image in and began my process. Besides the main image, there were only two extra layers added (which was for text). Getting rid of the old text was a breeze. I used the eye dropper tool on the black border at the bottom, which gave me the correct black color that was used. Next, I used the eraser tool and wiped out all the text. Added two separate text boxes, and kept the colors pretty similar to the old one.

With my version, I wanted to send a message out those who steal others peoples creations online without giving credit. I’ve seen it on Twitter, Instagram, you name it. If you ever heard the term “Biter”, then you know what I’m referring to. I strongly urge everyone to create their own content, and tag it somehow so people know you created it. So that was pretty much the point I was trying to make with this poster. Again, this was a fun assignment, and I enjoyed editing this already amazing poster. (And it was only right that I add the DS106 hashtag at the bottom right corner.)    DON’T BE A SUCKER!

DS106 Propaganda Posters

I saw this assignment and knew I had to give a go. It was worth three stars. First I looked up World War II posters. I came across a saying that I hear all the time. A saying that I really think is interesting. A saying that I honestly did not realize came from this […]

DS106 Propaganda

Stop Dithering. Get Ready to Create. Go Join DS106 Now.This assignment was to create a DS106 propaganda poster using a WWII poster as its basis.  I chose a poster I found on the Canada at War Forum and used Photoshop to remove some of the existing text and replace it with DS106 content.  I had some difficulties finding appropriate fonts, but I was able to get the text to line up with the existing wording.  I tried using the cloning stamp tool to try to blend the background and the coloured banners with the new text, but the result of doing this was much worse than having the hanging banners of colour.
