30 seconds of… (Part 2): Christian rock music

For my next creation of my 3-part post series “30 seconds of…”, check out a mix of Christian AND rock music!

To read about how I decided on this assignment and the mashups I’d do, as well as how I made the mashups, check out Part 1: Christian contemporary music.

However, I’ll include the instructions below.

“This is some sort of variation on Katy Chase’s The Contest That Nobody Could Win assignment, but instead of clips from a TV show or movie, do clips from your favorite songs and see if anyone can guess what they are. Or at least the artist. Do two or three second clips using 4 or 5 songs. Make them all different. Use SoundCloud to post!”

“10 second song mashup”, 3.5 stars

My modifications:

  • Make the mashup about 30 seconds long
  • Do it by topic or genre
  • Don’t use SoundCloud
  • Not enforcing the “can anyone guess” thing

Without further ado, here’s my Christian rock mix:

30 seconds of Christian rock music

Now, you may be asking, “Why did you choose to make two separate Christian song mashups?”

Well, it all lies in the contemporary vs rock differentiation. They’re distinctly different sounds to me. I grew up listening almost exclusively to Christian contemporary, music, so by my teen years, I wanted something with more energy that would still be Christian. I started listening to secular rock music shortly before I discovered that Christian rock existed, and once I found that Christian rock was indeed an actual genre, I began listening to bands like Skillet and Relient K. Because of that, many of the songs I’ve included are “firsts” in different ways.

Invisible was the first Disciple song I heard, and I discovered it through a friend’s Instagram story. The lyrics “You’re not stranded on your own, you’re not invisible” call out to the listener, and the song reminds me that God is on my side and that He cares for and truly loves me. He sees me in my struggles and is there for me when I feel completely alone, which is immensely comforting.

Be My Escape was one of the first Christian rock songs I heard that I played on drums. I was in a band at the time, and this was one of the songs we played together. It’s a song where the artist talks about both his struggles with doubt and his insecurities and his plea and trust that God will get him out of the rut he’s in—hence the lyrics “And I’m begging you, I’m begging you, I’m begging you to be my escape”. The tone of humility and the need for God comes through strongly, and it’s very relatable.

Feel Invincible was one of the first Christian rock songs I heard, period. I knew that Skillet was a Christian band, but I hadn’t realized that they were a Christian rock band. And they really are—all of their songs pack a powerful punch. It’s absolutely rock music, and it’s rock music that’s Christian, which I think is awesome. Several of Skillet’s songs focus on their identity as Christians, and these lyrics are one aspect of that: “You make me feel invincible, earthquake powerful / just like a tidal wave, you make me brave”. Without Him, I’m nothing; with His support, I can be the best version of myself.

Hanging On By A Thread was a song that came up in my Spotify recommendations, and the first couple times I didn’t really pay attention to it. However, last spring, I relistened to it and realized how much I liked it. The song is about dependence on God: “So I’m holding on to You, no I won’t let go…I’m hanging on by a thread”. When nothing else in the world is stable, He is. He is there through all of the changes I experience, both internal and external, and I need Him more than anything else.

If you haven’t heard my other two mashups in this series, check out 30 seconds of… (Part 1): Christian contemporary music and 30 seconds of… (Part 3): Rock music.

30 seconds of… (Part 1): Christian contemporary music

This is the first in a series of 3 posts with the same assignment, but the assignment is done differently each time.

As per the title, first up is a set of Christian contemporary music.

When I saw the assignment “10 second song mashup” in the ds106 assignment bank, I thought, “Huh. That sounds like it could be cool.” Here are the instructions:

“This is some sort of variation on Katy Chase’s The Contest That Nobody Could Win assignment, but instead of clips from a TV show or movie, do clips from your favorite songs and see if anyone can guess what they are. When I was first considering what to do for this assignment, I thought of all different songs and genres. I didn’t want to only do favorite songs. So, I decided to do three different versions of this assignment: Christian contemporary music, Christian rock music, and rock music.

Here’s the first mix.

30 seconds of Christian contemporary music

I used Audacity to make the mashup. I first had to convert the songs to a .wav format because Audacity was not a fan of my iTunes files and insisted on another format. So, once I had them in Audacity, I quickly clipped the parts I wanted and stuck them together. I realized that including all of the clips would be more than 10 seconds, so I decided to make it 30 seconds (or 28, if you’re being picky). I followed the same format for all of hte

Before I get into explaining why I picked each song, I want to note that I created a mashup of Christian songs because my faith is a key part of my life. I did not create it to shove my beliefs down anyone’s throat; I made it because both music and my faith as a Christian are important to me, and I wanted to invite people into those parts of my life. If I chose to only create a mashup of rock music, I’d be holding back out of fear of disapproval. I want to share things I make without that fear. (I talk about this a little more here.)

“Write Your Story” is a song by Francesca Battistelli—an artist I’ve seen in concert and whose music made up a lot of what I listened to in my preteen and early teen years. I love many of her songs, but this is one of my favorites. The lines “They say You’re the king of everything / the One who taught the wind to sing” are beautiful and so poetic.

“Joy” is a song I first heard on the radio and instantly fell in love with. I remember replaying it over and over again for weeks after I first heard it. I still absolutely love it. Newsboys infuse their music with a earnest sense of, well, joy, and that very evidently comes through in this song. The lyrics “If life’s a battle, the invasion is complete / if it’s a rhythm, I have found the perfect beat” refer to the freedom, peace, and happiness found in Christ. Not only do I think those lyrics are amazing, but the music at that point feels very catchy.

“Shout to the Lord” is a song that I grew up hearing in church. There are several others like this that stir up feelings of nostalgia and a desire to truly worship God in song. I don’t really know how to describe it. The lyrics and the people singing them are so worshipful and passionate, and even just listening without singing along makes me feel so much love for the Lord. The words “I sing for joy at the work of Your hands / forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand” ring with steadfast trust in Him, and this is a song that reminds me that He is king of all and that He is all-powerful and loving.

Guess the song?

10 Second Song Mashup – 3.5 Stars

For this assignment I had to chose some songs and do a mashup of just 2 seconds of each song to see if you can guess the songs. I chose all pop/upbeat songs for this assignment. I also chose songs that I feel like sound kind of similar. Try and see how many you can get right!

I made this song mashup using GarageBand. Some reason when you convert from Garageband to iTunes it adds a few seconds to it, but in Garageband it really was 10 seconds long!

I really enjoyed this assignment. I think it is fun guessing songs from just short clips of them. I think a fun assignment would be just playing the first few seconds of a song because usually when you listen to the radio you hear the first part and already know the song.

“If I were a single lady”

For my next assignment, I create a song mashup, but I changed the rules a bit. Instead of using 2 or 3 seconds of 5 songs, I used 10 seconds of 2 songs to make a mashup. I used 2 Beyonce songs to mash together.

First, I imported the two songs into Audacity. Then I opened another Audacity project to paste the parts of the song I cut from the originals. I chose the fade out option under effects to make the parts flow together better. It was pretty simple!

Gotta kiss myself, I’m so pretty

Assignment: 10 Second Song Mashup

Assignment Description: This is some sort of variation on Katy Chase’s The Contest That Nobody Could Win assignment, but instead of clips from a TV show or movie, do clips from your favorite songs and see if anyone can guess what they are. Or atleast the artist. Do two or three second clips using 4 or 5 songs. Make them all different. Use soundcloud to post!

Top hits: This mashup is made up of 4 of my favorite songs right now, as well as 4 very well known songs. I don’t think that they are that hard to guess, but maybe you do! I included the chorus for all of them. Comment below, and I will be sure to comment back with all the right answers. (The soundcloud image makes it pretty obvious)

Madness behind the Mashup: I decided to use songs that I had downloaded into iTunes. Turns out, this didn’t work out as easily as I thought it would. I got pretty frustrated in this process. I finally googled some things, and found out that the iTunes file needs to be in mp3 format in order for me to import it into audacity. I went into iTunes preferences, and I was able to create an mp3 version of the songs. Once this was all done, I imported the 4 songs into audacity, and cut the songs to about 2-3 seconds each. I zoomed in a lot so that I could get the timing down perfectly. When it was all done, I uploaded to soundcloud, and embedded the file here.

10 seconds and 5 songs–can you name them all?

I came across this assignment and chose to complete it because I thought it would be fun to create a 10 second mashup of some of my favorite songs. However, it was a bit more difficult to create this mashup than I originally thought it was going to be. I chose five songs, each playing within the mashup about 2-3 seconds. In order to create this mashup I used audacity. As such, I first had to convert my chosen songs to mp3 format so I could import them into audacity. That wasn’t the hard part though, the hard part was determining where to cut each song so only 2-3 seconds would play! I didn’t want to make it too difficult for everyone to figure out the song titles and/or artists so I tried to use sections of the songs that would provide a good hint. I also tried to use songs that almost everyone would be familiar with or would have heard at least a few times before. I uploaded my mashup to soundcloud so you could give it a listen. Let’s see if you can guess the songs and/or artist!

This assignment was worth four stars contributing to this week’s 12 star requirement.

Name These Songs

For this assignment, I mashed together five songs into a 10 second slot. The real challenge is for you guys to name all of the songs (and artists)! Some of them should be pretty easy, but let’s see if you can get all of them!

This project was a lot of fun to make. I have become very fond of working with audio over the course of this semester, since it’s pretty easy to edit and rework. I downloaded most of these songs from YouTube using the MP3 Converter and uploaded them into Audacity, where I cut them down to fit in the requisite 10 seconds.

I tried to make the audio flow together pretty well, although most of these songs come from very different styles (except two, which I think will probably be the easiest to guess). I also went with kind of a theme to make the track make sense, which is pretty evident in the clip. So, while you should try to name the songs, also try to name the artists that go with each part! That makes it a little tougher. Have fun!

Music Mash Up

For the 10 Second Song Mash Up assignment, we had to take a couple of seconds from 4 or 5 songs and mash them together in a 10 second audio clip.  Here’s what I came up with:

I didn’t want to just pick five random songs, I wanted to express my various music tastes in this.  I like a lot of different music, so I picked five songs that I feel capture the spectrum my interest.  They’re not in any particular order, but I feel the first part could only be placed at the beginning.  I tried to take out key moments in each song, so the listener can get a feel for what the whole song is like.

Fun Fact:  It’s the same vocalist on the first and fourth songs.

How I made it:

  1. I used youtube-mp3.org to convert youtube videos of all of the songs into mp3s
  2. I imported all the tracks into audacity.
  3. I edited the tracks to just 2-3 seconds of audio and adjusted the tracks into an order, as seen below:

Capture12

4.  I exported the audio and uploaded it to Soundcloud.

Guess! Those! Songs!

This is some sort of variation on Katy Chase’s The Contest That Nobody Could Win assignment, but instead of clips from a TV show or movie, do clips from your favorite songs and see if anyone can guess what they are. Or atleast the artist. Do two or three second clips using 4 or 5 songs. Make them all different. Use soundcloud to post!

For this 4 star assignment I chose my 4 favorite songs at the moment to use in the 10 second mashup; Songs are by Imagine Dragons, Eric Hutchinson, Life of Dillon, and Sheppard.

I started by downloading all the songs from YouTube using the YouTube to mp3 converter:

3bumper

Then once I had them downloaded, I opened all for of them with Audacity:

aud

Then I trimmed them all down to the sections and time that I needed to complete the assignment. To get the delay between tracks, I recorded no sound and copy and pasted it in the tracks to create the delay between each:

audw

Lastly, I uploaded the audio track to Souncloud and embedded it below:

I decided to do One Direction because I’m in love with their new album. I decided to start off with their first song on the X Factor, then their first single, their most popular song (Which is probably when I first heard them), and then two songs off the last album that I like.

1

First I had to download Audacity again. Then I googled One Direction songs.2

I then converted the videos to sound files using the converter I usually use.

3

I ended up downloading 5 songs, that way each song would get about 2 seconds of sound.

4

Here’s all the songs in Audacity.

5

And here’s my final project. I then exported it and uploaded it to SoundCloud.
