ds 106: Play DJ & Make A Song (again!)(4.5 stars)

Back at it again with another song! This time I focused much more on making an ambient track rather than a fully fledged song, and I’m pretty happy with the end result. I wanted something that you’d hear as the backing music to a graveyard or haunted woods at night, and put together a bunch of different elements from all sorts of songs and tracks to come up with this piece. I based this off of an old music tournament submission I made a long time ago, and edited it heavily to make it more ambient and less of a traditional song.

I used an online sequencer called Beepbox to make this track and nothing else. I browsed an embarrassing amount of spooky dark forest ambiance tracks on Youtube for my inspiration as well as a handful of songs from niche places, such as a Starbound mod called Frackin Universe and artists like Crywolf and RIOT who are amazing at building scenes with their music. Lots of reverb, lots of background noises, and a whole lot of bass and sub bass. Having these alone can fill out an empty track and give it space, and the extra noises and actual notes can keep the emphasis while not drowning out the other elements of the song. The track itself plays twice and is actually made to loop infinitely, But for the sake of making it sound nice and not going on forever I made a simple ending for it. I wanted this to make the feeling of Hollowgrove feel like a horror game. Of course there aren’t just horror aspects to it, and if it ever came to light I’d tag it with horror but wouldn’t consider it a full on horror game. The setting, the creatures and the characters are all meant to be unsettling to some extent though, and this is a great way to help instill that feeling in my audience.

ds 106: Story time fun time (3.5 stars)

There are a lot of options in regards to telling a story. I could talk about anything, tell any sort of tale for this. What really inspired me was the idea of continuing off of a gif assignment I had completed last week. The story revolves around a monstrous dog like creature running rampant in a city that’s been sealed in, told vaguely through a corrupt automated message. I wanted it to be unnerving and hard to not pay attention to, like watching the news when something horrible is on. When you don’t want to see it yet you can’t look away.

I used a handful of tools to complete this assignment. The main piece of software used was Audacity, which is free and very easy to use. I compiled all my audio samples onto it and used it to add various effects to said samples like reverb, phasing and distortion. The second most important program used was an online text to speech generator called voicemaker. I inputted the string of text I wanted into it and simply downloaded it after finding a voice setting I liked. Finally, I used an online web sequencer called Modbox to grab a handful of white noise samples. I don’t think they were all that important to the process, but they definitely added a lot of ambiance and tension in the spots I wanted.

ds 106: Play DJ & Make A Song (4.5 stars)

I saw this assignment and immediately knew that I wanted to do it. I was inspired by a prompt from a discord server to “Introduce the listener to a space adventure”. I used an online sequencer called Modbox to make this song, which gives me all sorts of fun chiptune and retro sound fonts. I added a lot of white noise to the drums and background to give it some atmosphere and space, as well as a decent amount of reverb to the whole track. The process took me a lot longer than expected, and I wish I started working on it earlier in the week.

ds106: Eat Your Hear Out Beethoven (5 stars)

I thought it’d be fun to make a cover of a song with a style that’s drastically different from the original. For starters, I’m not that big on Let Her Go, but my partner sure is and I thought it’d be a nice surprise for him and this class. I used a program that’s based off an online music sequencer known as Beepbox, the spinoff used known as Modbox. I got some help from my partner in getting notes correctly in a lot of parts, mainly the verses. I chose this program specifically for it’s customization and the fact that it primarily uses chiptune sound fonts as instrumentation. I overall really like how this came out! I think the feeling of the song is still there, but at the same time a lot of context and meaning behind the song has been washed away with a lack of vocals. In some ways it makes the song easier to appreciate in that one can just enjoy the sounds and feelings, but on the other hand one may have a harder time understanding the desired vibe of the song.

Slowin’ it way down- Audio assignment 1423

The final audio assignment I did this week was 3 stars entitled “Make it 800% slower.”  For this assignment you have to take a song and slow it down to make it sound almost like classical music. The example was U Smile by Justin Bieber. I decided to do Life Happens by Brandon and Leah.

I was trying to figure out how to get a YouTube video into Audacity so I googled it. And this is what I found:

  • Step 1: Install ClipGrab. First of all, you need to install ClipGrab . …
  • Step 2: Copy the video link. …
  • Step 3: Insert the video link in ClipGrab. …
  • Step 4: Select download format and quality. …
  • Step 5: Grab that clip!

So I installed ClipGrab, but couldn’t figure out how to open it, it just kept installing. So I just recorded the song from my phone to Audacity.

While trying to figure out how to get a YouTube video to Audacity (PS if you have any advice please share) I looked at blog post from other people who did this assignment and I found a blog that was helpful in another way. Although the blog, that the blog I was reading, got the information from was shut down, she summed up what she learned enough for me to use their information. She states

Instead of changing the speed of the song using the :change speed button” he suggested that instead you use the “paulstretch” effect. Which basically slows down the song without changing the pitch.

After discovering this glorious tool, the assignment became much easier.

So the first thing I did was play around with the “paulstretch” effect. This effect took approximately 20 minutes to change the original recording, so I was hoping I got it right the first time! And I did! The stretched version sounds very haunted and like a spooky scene in a movie. It seems to be very heavily played by a violin. Because it takes so long to save and upload the videos I’m only going to upload a portion of the stretched version because it is over 2 and a half hours long. Also the song just repeats itself the whole time, so it’s basically the same thing just repeated. I shorted it to about 3 minutes and 30 seconds. I felt like that length encompassed a good amount of sound and was short enough to listen to the whole thing and long enough to get a good idea of how the song sounds slowed down.

Stalking Zac Efron- Audio Assignment 1665

The first audio assignment I did for the week had 3 stars. It’s called “Have a Phone Conversation WIth Yourself.” I started this assignment by typing up a transcript in word. This way I would have the just of what I wanted to say and what the topic of the phone conversation would be and then I could kinda add in some of my own words and emotions as I read the script. I first tried to record it on my phone with an app called Recorder. However when I then sent this to my email I was unable to convert it to the appropriate file in order to upload it to Audacity to edit. I then tried to play the recording on my computer and record on Audacity, but Audacity did not pick up the sound coming from the computer. So then I played it off of my phone and recorded it through Audacity and that worked. Then I started edited, once I figured out how to select sections of audio, it was quiet easy. I played around for a little bit and then decided that changing the pitch would probably work best. I found a pitch that worked for each character and wrote down what is was so I could replicate it on each segment. In the end I think my assignment turned out fairly well and tells a humorous story with a twist at the end. I uploaded both the original with just my voice and the edited version to my Soundcloud in case anyone wanted to compare the two.

Fear of War- Audio Assignment 1551

For my second audio assignment I completes “Emotions Through Sounds“. We had to use at least 4 sounds to convey an emotion. I decided to do fear and what I fear most is war. So I clipped together different war sounds; guns shooting, a man screaming in terror, planes flying, and background noise to make this environment. I overlapped the sounds and had the screaming happening first and then die out to represent either the person’s death or maybe his escape. I retrieved the sounds from freesound.org in order to make my audio assignment.

A little bird told me that Week Two for #prisoner106 is going to be Audio Week, and that Number 2 wants folks to make a lot of nice Good Morning Announcement Messages to play on the loudspeakers every morning when people are getting up and doing their ablutions and toast and stuff.  So I decided that it would be a nice thing to make one for everyone to hear. Because of my voice and all.

There are lots of examples of them in the episodes. Look for the parts where Number Six tips his head sideways and then the picture shows one of those little metal boxes (like up above in my GIF) and then a voice comes out of nowhere and says nice things.

Anyway, now that you have seen my GIF, you can listen to my first Good Morning Message.

Isn’t it a nice one? I used that Party Dress song in the background like I found in one of the episodes using Shazam on my iPhone. That app sure is a wonder and lets you find sounds so quickly, especially in a nice clean format to put into an audio project without any of the old hiss from the 1960s and film scratches.

Because of my advance information, this will be an example for a new assignment that Number 2 asked me to make called Assignment 1745: Good Morning Message for The Village. When you do it, you can tag it with AudioAssignments, and AudioAssignments1745 so that it will link into the ds106 Assignment Bank example for that assignment.

Rain Chimes

DS106 Sound Scapes, AudioAssignments, AudioAssignments970

The soundscape audio assignment really appealed to me. I sometimes listen to ‘voiceless’ music during the work day when I need to focus hard and not be distracted behind the meaning of words in songs. It also relaxes me and helps me enter a more meditative state. I figured, why not make my own soundscape? With all of the rain in Denver, Colorado, I decided to focus on water sounds. I typically enjoy the sound of a good rain shower. Since the requirements for the assignment were to use ‘found sounds,’ I like the idea of recording some of my own sounds. I used an iphone 5c to record most of the sounds since I don’t have any other more sophisticated recording device. I also used freesound to gather some chimes, and dings. However all water sounds I recorded.

I thought this would also be a great assignment for libraries such as Anythink, which has a studio for people to record their own sounds and mix it together. Or maybe another spin on the assignment could be a ‘sound scavenger hunt’? Sounds could be described with words and then sounds could be found to meet the requirements then mixed together. The assignment is accessible and can be appreciated for the potential for learning.

The learning that happens, and this is a great assignment to introduce students to sound, is learning about sound waves, how audio is digitized, different types of digital audio files and which ones are appropriate. Also, how to alter recorded sounds and then, ultimately, mix it all together in a multitrack session. I found extreme value in this assignment for myself, as well as demonstrating another assignment that supports the idea of value in arts education to create ‘literacies’ in technology. I have never purposefully recorded audio and mixed it together. I have never taken a music or recording class. I really don’t know much about sound editing or recording equipment. This assignment forced me to learn many new things.
Although I could have learned how to use some freeware software to mix and alter tracks, I chose to use Adobe Audition CC. I already use my Creative Cloud account for visual software so this was an easy download as part of my CC subscription. Opening up Audition for the first time was really overwhelming because of the robust menus, however watching a few video tutorials really helped me understand the basics, and enough to complete the assignment with success. I must say however, it did take considerable time to complete the assignment from beginning to end with the amount of learning and the many tasks I created for myself by tinkering with the sounds.

Listen to some of my recorded and found sounds. Can you identify when and how they are used in the mixed final track?

Found sounds on the web:

Chiming Out

Wine Glass Tinkles

Personally recorded sounds with iphone 5c:

Rain

Rain Pipe

Water Shake

Reverse Audio Quiz

For another audio assignment, I chose to do the Reverse Audio Quiz (2.5 stars). It took me a while to figure out how to reverse a song on editing software, but once I moved from Garageband to Audacity the process was a lot easier since audacity simply has a “reverse” button under the “edit” section.

For the song, I thought it would be cool to pick one of my favorites and see how different it sounded backwards. Funnily enough, I think it sounds kind of cool! The song is a sweet, simple and emotional little love song, and reversed it sounds actually kind of spooky, so the meaning seems to change. It’s not a very popular song, so take you best guess at what it is!
