DS106-Culture Clash

THE ASSIGNMENT:  Take two cultures and create a banner that represents how their coming together would mix.

THE PROCESS:  I found various pictures on the internet of things that are symbolic to both American and Japanese culture.  I then decided to make two separate banners for this assignment, one of them would be a collage, and the other would be a design that incorporated both the American and Japanese national flag.  My first idea was to make a collage of pictures that represented both cultures, and I did this using the program called Gimp.  I saved the photos that I found on the internet to my computers desktop and then transferred them into Gimp in order to begin creating my masterpiece.  I never used Gimp before so it took me awhile to understand how this program works.  Probably about two hours of my time was spent trying to figure out how to use the program well enough to create my idea for this assignment. Once I had a good understanding of this program,  I then used the tools available to enhance/change the pictures in order to create the collage.  Once I was satisfied with the outcome, I uploaded the final product onto my WordPress page, and began to work on my flag design.  I found a way on Gimp to merge the American flag design with the Japanese design, and then crop certain parts of the flags that weren’t needed.  After that was finished,  I added some extra color to the flags using the paint tool, and uploaded it to my WordPress page.

THE STORY:  When I found this assignment on the DS106 website, I knew that it was going to be a good chance for me to use some of my creativity.  Due to the fact that I am an American who is now living in Japan,  I felt it only necessary to use these two countries for the culture clash.   While creating this assignment I learned how to use Gimp (which could be helpful in the future), and I am very satisfied with the finished product, although it took me way too long to complete.

DS106 Haiku it up!

I chose this assigment “Haiku it up!“. The assigment requires these : For the writing assignment, take a random Dailyshoot photograph and create a haiku using that image. Let the image inspire you to create a poetic haiku. Don’t know what a haiku is? The most common form for Haiku is three short lines. The first line usually contains five (5) syllables, the second line seven (7) syllables, and the third line contains five (5) syllables. Haiku doesn’t rhyme.

“When I stop the alarm clock

I always blow out a breath

But the sun also “Rises””

Maybe , everyone has faced a same situation. Nowadays Im taking morning class, so I have to wake up around 6:00 am everyday. I was ok during first 1~2 weeks, but after several weeks, I tried to escape from alarm clock to get comfortable. Now, I can only say that Closk is worst enemy during this semester for me….

I took  a photo of alarm clock from googl picture. And I attached the photo to this post. Before I brought it, I have already made the haiku.

I’m not sure the works  I did is on right track, but this assignment was really intrested for me because I have never written hainku in English. First, I though it will be easier for me cause I have experience to create haiku in Japanese, so I assumed Haiku in English and Japanese are almost same. However, I took around 30 minutes to create it. I realized Hainku in English and Japanese were totally different. Even though it was a little difficult for me, I could experience some thing new for me, so the  assignment is good for me. I recommend to do this assignment for every one!

DS106 Visual Assignments Create Your Frankenstein “Micky Duck”

Can you tell how many cartoon characters I combined? The Simpsons, Doraemon, Micky Mouse, Donald Duck, Kureon Shinchyan and pluto

Process: I used hand, eyes and brain to design, then colour the picture through computer. I used the software called Paintbrush.

Concept: Funny huh? I thought it is kinda adorable, hope the real authors wouldn’t be offended by my creation…

The Power Giving Ring

Mashedup Children’s Book

Mashup a children’s book based on another cultural artifact. For example, framing Dr. Who as a children’s book in the aesthetic of a Dr. Suess’s work. See example from College Humor here.

Following the College Humor examples, I decided to merge a classic Children’s book with a fantasiesque piece of culture.  As you can see, I merged Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree with J.R.R. Tolkien’s series The Lord of the Rings.

Silverstein was author and illustrator of The Giving Tree, and its cover art serves as the base for manipulation here.

The Giving Tree

Front Cover of The Giving Tree

I used Pixlr to manipulate the image and add characters from The Lord of the Rings that seemed appropriate on the cover of this children’s book.  The little boy reminded my of the small, innocent looking hobbit Frodo from The Lord of the Rings.  The apple could be humorously replaced with the Ring, and to spice it up a bit, I decided to include a looming Gollum.

I decided to use the LEGO version of Lord of the Rings characters after remembering their existence.

Luckily, I found a LEGO Wikia containing images for all of the figures.

LEGO Frodo

Main character Frodo from The Lord of the Rings in LEGO form.

LEGO Gollum

LEGO version of the ring lusting Gollum from The Lord of the Rings.

When extracting the hobbit Frodo’s form to place of The Giving Tree’s cover, I hit a few snags.  The magic wand tool was giving my a bit a difficulty due to the varying hues of the background image, so I did what I could with the tool and used the eraser to isolate the rest of Frodo’s form.   After adjusting the LEGO sizes and placing them where I desired, I matched the color from the original background and switched to the original background layer to give a clean looking image.

I did the same when replacing the apple with the Ring.

One Ring to Rule Them All

The Ring of desire from The Lord of the Rings

The last step was to replace the title and the author.

I wanted to think of something clever pertaining to The Lord of the Rings while remaining true to the essence of The Giving Tree.  With a bit of brainstorming, I settled on The Power Giving Ring.  However, I nearly drove myself mad when trying to find a font style that matched the original for the alternate title.

I couldn’t find a closely matching style, so I settled on juice ITC and used Gabriola to write Tolkien.  (Again, couldn’t find the font style I wanted.)

And that, my friends, was how The Power Giving Ring was born.

DS106 Visual Assignments A Sunset, “Sunrise of Yokosuka”

Ok I think sunrise is okay for this assignment “sunset”, I don’t think I can tell the difference between sunset and sunrise…. Just the direction of sun…

Process: Be in the right location, choose a nice angle and take the photo!
Story: I was heading Yokosuka base at around 7:00 am… When I was walking through the park near the base, I was totally touched beyond words. I saw the gorgeous scene, the breeze was blowing me with its ocean smell while hearing the horn(s) from the ships (or sub?)… That is why I took the picture, but the moment is way way more better than a photo… These ships and submarine should be Japanese Self Defense Force’s, the JSDF base is connected to the US Yokosuka naval base. Yokosuka is a beautiful city, you can see the seaside and mountains at the same time…

Iconic Me

This is a symbol for me for years, and as Iconic Me assigned me to do I have uploaded an image of it. The KST on the points of the cross mean to me the three core values of my life, Knowledge, Strength and Truth. The Scythe is for my number of seven and luck as well as Strength. The cloth has many meanings the waviness of at the bottom of the hanging cloth symbolizes wings and lightheartedness. The other meaning is the left side if for knowledge and the right side is for truth, the cloth is suppose to be 2 toned blue for Knowledge and green for truth. The strong meaning of Knowledge, Strength and Truth is, Have the knowledge to know what you are doing, or of a situation. Strength to fulfill and stand up to what you are doing and to life. Finally Truth is to know what is really occuring and the truth of the matters you are working in and behind your actions.

What People Think When I Say I’m Just a College Student”

“What people think” is pretty popularly recently on the internet. I made one “What people think” of being a college student. I can’t say who’s perspective is “wrong”, since I do play different roles in some degree, but different percentage.

Process:

Since I don’t have Paint while using MAC, I downloaded a software called Paintbrush http://paintbrush-mac.en.softonic.com/mac/download   It is extremely easy to use, yet, Window’s Paint is better (more functions).

I used the typical black background, but different size of photos and various style of words.

Concept:

The first picture (left), which is the stereotype of good college students. Yea, I can see such people everywhere anytime in my family. I have a big family, most of them, from intermediate relatives, grandparents, parents, cousins, sister, are all extremely smart in academic way… Doctors, nurses, professors, architects, scientists (in NASA)…    Me, the only one who almost dropped out high school and thinking to stop continuing the education in college. Yet, I care about my image, and don’t want to lose my and my family’s face. That is why I gave a try for college… I tried to become one of them in the photo for my family. Well, I found it’s not that hard to pretend to be one of them…

The second picture, Jeremy Lin, Lin Sanity, is pretty popularly recently. The Taiwanese American plays for New York Knicks in NBA… Why this picture? Personally, I think he is a prefect role model for Asian Americans; graduating from Harvard, playing in NBA and being religious. I thought I could become a better ( and smarter) person when I said “Nah I’m Just a College Student”…

The third picture is from the music video of Wale’s “The Cloud”… Ha I never studied in high school, so my former classmates are surprised that I made it to a university and became trilingual(not including dialect(s))… Meanwhile, they must think I party all the time… Not necessarily wrong, but I’m trying to be a “good” student at meantime, since I can’t be a quitter who wastes the opportunity(s) from God…

The fourth picture, Though I have never cheated, my girlfriend always says I‘m ???? (womanizer)…

The last one, Yep this what I do the most in college. I am a person who prefer experience than secondhand information… Reading books may make people a better person. Yet, I assert that experiences shape one’s philosophy way deeper than reading… I have been trying to read since I knew I was going to be in a university. However, I always fall asleep during “study night” ,then it become “movie night”…

I would say, I’m not a dumb ass, not a lazy sod, but just haven’t been motivated…

There is a ghost invading my photo!

In this photo I took back in 2005, it was always interesting to me. As you can see there is no lights behind my person but if you look to the left of my head there is a lightish orb as well as a slightly lighter frame of shoulders standing to my left. I took this photo while at my US Navy school in the swamp lands outside of Charleston, South Carolina. When I noticed this by brightining the image it was rather intriguing to me to investigate the photo and show my friends to see what they would say. So when I saw the topic in Visual Assignments, “IS THAT A GHOST?!…” I decided this picture would fit well. Hope you all enjoy and can see what I see.

If needed I can upload a brightened photo later.
