Before and After

This is my last Ds106 assignment ever and I thought I should end it with a funny one! The second I saw this Ds106 assignment I burst out laughing because I knew exactly what to do. The assignment reads…
Take 2 or more pictures and combine them to show us a funny story.

I had photos from my last track meet in high school and remembered that there were perfect before and after photos.
These are it.
This is a picture of my  friend from running the last  meter of his 1600 race. He was doing so well and at the last second of the race he tripped on the track and came second. His head was literally few inches from the finishing line and I felt so bad for him. Even though this was a very sad moment for my friend, it was just too funny that I couldn’t stop laughing. This was a moment I would never forget.

WORD

This is a DS106 assignment for the last section! For this section I decided to pick an assignment from the design section :)
The Directions read…
Pick one word. Select one single typeface, and communicate your word. Do not use colors or any other graphical elements. The goal is to select a type face that represents the meaning of the word, and if needed manipulate the font using different sizes, bold, italics, counterform (spacing) etc to visualize the word.

I thought this assignment would be simple and make me use my imagination to try to design a word using only the same black font. The hardest part of this assignment was coming up with a word that would be easy enough to make a design out of. Then I re-read the assignment and noticed that the size of the font I use can be changed so I thought the word “BIGGER” might be simple.

This is how it turned out!

(I used microsoft word to make this and the font I used was called Braggadocio. )

Surfing on Sunshine: DS106 Assignment I.

Since our final section is titled “Surfing on Sunshine,” I wanted right from the start to do the DS106 assignment A Sunset–the prompt for which asks–

Take a picture of a beautiful sunset. Nothing fancy, just a nice picture :)

In order for my assignment to make any sense though, there’s a bit of explaining I should do. One of my favorite books of all time is a French children’s book, “Le Petit Prince” (“The Little Prince”; ??????. There is a part in the story where the little Prince becomes sad, and asks Antoine de Saint-Exupery, the author, if they can go see a sunset. It turns out that the Little Prince comes from a planet that is so small that in order to see a sunset, all he has to do is walk for a few moments to the other side of his planet–so he can see a sunset anytime he feels like it. The Little Prince says,

“Un jour, j’ai vu le soleil se coucher quarante-trois fois!”
Et un peu plus tard tu ajoutais:
“Tu sais… quand on est tellement triste on aime les couchers de soleil…”

(Or, in the English version…)

“One day,” you said to me, “I saw the sunset forty-four times!”
And a little later you added:

“You know–one loves the sunset, when one is so sad . . .”

*this picture is taken from the The Little Prince, and does not belong to me.

Ever since reading this book, I always want to see sunsets when I am sad. And that is where I am going with all of this–my latest DS 106 assignment. Although I am generally a happy person,  something happened last week that made me extraordinarily sad, and I thought of The Little Prince. Looking through pictures that I had taken during a trip with a friend, I found myself wishing that they were  all sunset pictures. Then I began searching through all of the pictures on my computer, and couldn’t find a single one in which I had captured a sunset–so I decided to make one. Thinking of The Little Prince, I wanted it to be a bit childish–not an oil-painting sunset, but a child-who-doesn’t-know-how-to-use-fancy-computer-editing-programs kind of painting.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I am thankful for this class after all, because to me “Surfing on Sunshine” is freedom. And freedom is here after all–the ability to express myself in ways I wasn’t able to before. On a blog. In photoshop. And on DS106 too.

Mash Up

This is the “consumer mash up” assignment. You incorporate your favorite product into the logo of the store you purchase it from.

I shop at Aeon. It’s this sort of department store that also sells groceries. They have an imported foods section that sells these frozen Italian pizzas that are the best. Frozen pizza is a must because delivery is too expensive. One pizza from Domino’s in Japan is over 40 dollars. And it’s thinner than what you would get in the states. So a higher end frozen pizza is much preferable.

I took a photo of a crisp cheese pizza and then I incorporated it in to the the logo to make an “O” using the photo editor, Gimp.

9 of all Glory

Create a video that artistically presents a single number in artful ways- show how it is represented in the world or nature. Add a relevant musical track, no narration, let the number and the visuals stell the story.

I had a surprising amount of fun creating this movie!  Being the first video I’ve made, I am very pleased with the outcome.  I had to download VideoPad Video Editor because I did not have any editing software on my computer before this project, but it was easy to use.  Hours had passed without my knowing as I changed, altered, affected, and timed my images to Revolution 9 by the Beatles.  I had many of the images used already on my computer or found as clip art, while the others I snagged off the Net.

Scouser at McDonalds

Using your best accent (whether it be Australian, British or southern, ect), pretend you are at McDondalds and order something off of their menu. Be picky! For example, a coke with no ice.

Beginning this assignment, I had a specific accent I wanted to emulate in mind.

I’m from the South of the U.S., including an eight year stint in Alabama, so I felt a Southern accent would be a bit too easy.  I wanted to do a British accent.  Anyone at all familiar with how the Brits speak knows how drastically different the accents are from town to town, particularly from those of the North to South.  When I say drastically, I mean a Londoner may travel to Newcastle and have no idea what the hell these people are saying.   For a little clarity, check out hilarious reality show such as Desperate Scousewives from Liverpool (or Livapewwl), the Geordie Shore from Newcastle, The Only Way Is Essex and Educating Essex, as well as posh town London’s Made in Chelsea.

Before moving to my current location this past January, I was living in Chelsea, so I am quite familiar with this bored accent with money dripping off the vowels.  For this assignment, I wanted to do a funnier variation, and wanted to speak with in the Scouse accent.  This is because last year, when Desperate Scousewives first came on the air, I was highly amused with the advert that frequently played while I was watching television.  By highly amused, I mean I thought it was the funniest thing I’d seen in my entire life and would go to work every night and imitate the accent.

A humorous example of English accents.

So, to order from McDonalds like a Scouser.

I never said I was very good at it.

DS106 Recording a Memory

THE ASSIGNMENT:  Capture on video a friend, family member, or stranger recounting a favorite (or least favorite) memory. Then be creative.

THE PROCESS:  I used photo’s from one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and then arranged them in a video creator program on my computer.  I added music as well as some added effects, such as gradients and zooming features.  I uploaded this video to You Tube and then embedded this video to my WordPress page. The process took about two hours to complete and I’m very satisfied by the outcome.

THE STORY:  I’ve always wanted to create a video with the pictures that I had from a couple years ago, but never had the time or patience in order to do so.  This assignment gave me the opportunity to sit down and put together a creative video of my experiences, and I’m very pleased with the outcome.  The only thing that I do not like about this video is the point where the two songs merge together.  I couldn’t figure out how to do a smoother  audio transition, but regardless, it turned out the way I wanted it to.  You can’t have a future without remembering the past,  Enjoy!

DS106 Cooking Show

This is my cooking show!

THE ASSIGNMENT:  Host a cooking show in your own kitchen, and show everyone how it’s done.

THE PROCESS:  I used a program called You Cam to record this video.  The picture quality is not very good, and you do not have the option of pausing and resuming while recording, it has to be one continuous video.  I do not own a video camera, so this was my only option.  I filmed myself cooking and then uploaded this video to You Tube, after this was successfully uploaded, I then embedded this short film to my WordPress page, and that was it!

THE STORY:  I needed to do a DS106 assignment on a new category, and the video assignment was the one I chose this time.  When I came across this assignment I instantly knew that this was going to be the one for me because I love to cook, and more importantly I love to eat.  I knew that it would be difficult for me to record this: #1) because I don’t have a “real” camera, and #2) I needed to chose something quick and simple to make because I didn’t have the option of pausing while filming.   If I tried to give a cooking tutorial on chicken parmigiana, it would end up being an hour long video, and nobody has time to watch that (not even my devoted professor) .  I thought that it would only be necessary for me to prepare a Japanese dish, so I chose sashimi because it is very simple to prepare, also one of my favorite things to eat.  In the end, I’m fully satisfied with the outcome of this project, it was fun and I would recommend this assignment to anyone taking this class.

DS106: Comments For Kids

The Assignment

In the Writing Assignments, I found the assignment which is called Comments For Kids by Bill Genereux. This is the first time to do writing assignment. The assignemnt read: Visit the Student Blogging Challenge website. Click on the Participants menu to find a list of kid bloggers who are participating in the challenge. There are blogger children from many different countries all around the world. Find 3-5 young bloggers, visit their blogs, and offer them your encouragement. For ideas on what to say, see How to compose a quality comment, courtesy of Linda Yollis’ 3rd grade class in California. When you are finished, write a post on your own blog describing your experience. Who knows? You might give much needed encouragement and support at just the right time. You might even make a new friend!

The Process

First, I went to the website which is called Student Blogging Challenge. Then I saw the list of the participants and selected 3 young bloggers: Olivia,P, Kylie,B and Zoe,G. Then I visited thier blog and left some comments. The process is quite simple.

The Story

I did not know about Student Blloging Challenge before I did this assignment, so I’m ganna explain about  Student Blloging Challenge. The Student Blogging Challenge runs twice yearly.  A new Challenge starts March and September, each year. It is made up of a series of 10 weekly tasks all designed to improve blogging and commenting skills while connecting students with a global audience. The Challenge is open to both class blogs and to individual student bloggers from all over the world and of all ages. Miss Wyatt began blogging in January 2008.  She began with her own personal blog and developed a class blog in March.  By the end of April, most of her students had their own blogs and the class blog was getting less use. In September that same year, Sue Waters (editor of “The Edublogger”) and Miss W. ran a very successful international student blogging competition.  They had classes from 9 countries taking part involving about 500 students. It was so successful, that they ran another beginning March 2009.  This was a challenge though, not a competition. This time 15 countries were involved and a total of over 1000 students ranging from grade 2 classes through to students in senior school. When I know the concept of Student Blloging Challenge, it seems interesting because students would be able to express thier opinion through thier blog post and learn how to use computer-based technology. The reason why I chose these 3 young blogger is that they have almost same hobbies such as cooking, singing and playing sports.  One of the young bogger who I chose Olivia(8 years old) wrote a blog post about Michelle Obama. Also, she has been writing well about her daily life. When I was 8 years old, I did not know how to write blog. Kylie,B (8 years old) introduced her her art work that she did on computer without help. Zoe (8 years old) also has been wonderfully writing about her daily life. I was surprised that she knows how to use gadgets on her blog. These 3 young blogger try to communicate other bloggers and improve thier skill of bogging and commenting on others blog. I feel that this program is very helpful for children to acquire the skill of computer.

Fan Fiction Picture

The Assignment

This assignment is called Fan Fiction Picture byduncandonuts56. The assignment read: Take the name or title of your favorite band, song, movie, or tv show and display it in the form of photography. You can take as many pictures as you want, but have your photos capture the band, song, movie, or tv show you pick. Be creative and have fun!

The Process

For this assignment, I used Photoshop cs3. First, I went to Flickr to get images which I need for this assignment. I chose two images. Then I went to Photoshop sc3 and cut out the word from second image. After that, I pasted the image on the first image.

The Story

I decided to create this image because I was inspired by the song which is called Fearless by Taylor Swift. She is my one of favorite singer. This song is the first song of her album which is called Fearless  released on November 11, 2008. She mentioned  “FEARLESS is not the absence of fear. It’s not being completely unafraid. FEARLESS is having fears. FEARLESS is having doubts. Lots of them. To me, FEARLESS is living in spite of those things that scare you to death. FEARLESS is getting back up and fighting for what you want over and over again… even though every time you’ve tried before, you’ve lost. It’s FEARLESS to have faith that someday things will change.” I can relate to what she mentioned, so that’s why I chose this song. The reason that I chose the image which I used is that he seems “FEARLESS”.
