Do you want to see aliens too ?

Aliens are pretty cool. Wouldn’t it be cool if YOU could see them? Turn that possibility into reality! Start by going to picmonkey.com, select “Edit a Photo”.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.29.25 PM

Select a photo of an eye that you’d like to use by clicking “Open”.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.29.33 PM

Here is the original photo I selected. As you can see it’s just a plain ol’ brown eye. Great, but nothing too special.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.31.53 PM

On the left hand side under “Basic Edits”, select the butterfly icon. This icon represents the overlay option. Prior to this I had already selected which picture I would use. Through trial and error I discover a helpful tip. Choose a photo with a dark background if you are using a dark colored eye. It helps the two images blend together.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.34.18 PM

Resize the overlay image to fit inside the eye, rotate it if you need to. In order to achieve the best results you may have to play around with the editing options. I found that the “Lighten” blend mode option, along with a little fading, had the best results. I’m sure the editing effects range depending on the images you are using though so play around until it looks right. Don’t worry if it takes some time.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.34.27 PM

After a little time and a lot of patience, you’ve officially seen an alien! Hope you all enjoy this picture as much as I do. Definitely recommend this visual assignment.

Make your own CRAZY BUNCH !

picmonkey.com has ALL of the answers… maybe not all, but a good portion. To start making a collage for your own crazy bunch, head on over to collage page of picmonkey.com

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.15.06 PM

Start off by selecting which style collage you’d like. I choose the “square deal” since it resembled the format of the Brady Bunch picture.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.15.34 PM

Click the “Open” option at the top in order to select the pictures you want to use. You’ll have to choose the photos one by one.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.15.59 PM

After selecting the photos, drag each one into the square you’d like it in. Select “Edit” option to crop, zoom, brighten or darken the picture.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.21.08 PM

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.22.10 PM

Repeat these steps until you are satisfied with the order and appearance of your creation. Once done select “Edit”, this will take you into the editor that will allow you to add text over the photo.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.24.58 PM

Click the text icon on the left hand side. Type in whatever you want.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.25.38 PM

Clicking the overlay option will place the text over your collage. You can fade it to create the effect you want.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.28.00 PM

If it came out the way you wanted, go ahead and save it ! You’re all done ! If not, keep on playing with the edit options until it makes you happy ?

ENJOY !

Not as hard as I thought…

Creating a spubble was super simple. Way more simple that I’d thought it’d be.

Once I decided which picture I was going to use, I opened it up using the Preview app on my mac book. Preview has an a few options on how to insert text into your photos. I selected the speech bubble option.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.10.49 PM

Upon selection, a speech bubble immediately pops up on your picture. From there you have the option to resize and reposition the bubble. You can also change the color of the bubble, although I chose to leave mine the same.

Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 9.13.25 PM

After determinig the size and position of the speech bubble, insert the text. Play around with the fonts and font size to determine what you like best. Once thats all done, you’ve officially created your very own spubble!

How to Embed a StoryMap

So, for this tutorial, I am more interested in embedding the StoryMap on a WordPress site than on creating the storymap itself. This is something that I spent a bit of time investigating, so I just wanted to simplify the process for anyone interested. I tried the plugin, and it did a lot of really odd things, none of which were successfully embedding my storymap. So, if you would like embed your storymap, you can do the following:

1. Go to your Dashboard on your WordPress site.

2. Click the link in the tab on the left to go to “plugins.”

3. Click add new, then search for “iframe” and you will see a plugin called iframe shortcode.

4. Click install, then click activate.
5. Now, the once forbidden iframe codes can be displayed on your site. (this means more than just storymap embedding, by the way.)
6. So, for the plugin, you replace <iframe     > </iframe> with [iframe   ] The final version of your url will look like this,

iframe src=”your full url, do not remove the quotes” frameborder=”0″ width=”100%” height=”800″

Yours will need brackets around it, though. I had to remove them here so it would not try to embed here.  The final product will look like this,  although your storymap is likely must prettier than mine.

Tutorial for a Mashup assignment

I am going to show you how I made a mashup design for a DS106 assignment called “This Doesn’t Belong Here”, which you can find in the DS106 Assignment bank by clicking on the link above. In this assignment, we had to mash 2 movie scenes together.

I am going to go through each step that I took to make this design! Feel free to comment below with questions.

1

First, I googled “iconic star wars scenes”

2

Then, I googled ‘cheshire cat’

3

I then opened up http://www.canva.com, a website that I have come to love through this class! I use it for alot for design and visual assignments. To the left, there is a tab you can click on called “Uploads”. You can simply drag and drop the image you want to chooe, or you can upload it from your files. Once uploaded, you can insert it into the blank canvas.

4

I then did the same thing for the cheshire cat image. I made it a little smaller, though. It’s really to resize things on Canva.

5

I then double-clicked the chesire cat picture. As you can see, there is a transparency tool you can use to make it more/less transparent.

6

I then used Windows Photo Viewer to rotate my picture. Then, bam, I was done!

I hope this helps!

Customize a Pair of Shoes! (Nikeid Tutorial)

In this assignment I am going to show you one of my favorite things to do! I collect basketball shoes and have been for the past 4 years, coming up on 60 pairs now. And Nikeid gives this amazing tool where you can put your own little spin on your favorite shoes! If you look at some of my other assignment you probably could easily guess that I always choose to customize basketball shoes! For this tutorial I am going to choose the Kyrie 2, and I’m going to make it UMW themed! Hope you enjoy and get ready to learn!

Step 1) You need to go to Nikeid.com and choose which shoe you would like to use! When you first get there you will have to pick mens or women, then it will give you an array of shoes. Find your favorite and Start customizing!

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 12.44.52 PM

Step 2) After you have chosen the shoe that you would like to customize, it will bring you to a screen. All you have to do now is customize it, you can do this 1 or 2 ways. You can click the arrows and follow the order when you choosing your colors. Or the way I like to do it, you can click on parts of the shoe and a color menu will appear, choose whatever color you like.

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 12.50.38 PM

Step 3) After you have customized the shoe to your liking, got all the colors you want on it and think that it is perfect. You now get to “id” the shoe! and put your own name or number, or saying on the tongue of the shoe! Im went ahead and threw “UMW” on the left and “EAGLES” on the right shoe.

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 1.00.08 PM

Step 4) After you have finished your “id” then Nike will ask you for your sizing info. From there all you have to do is either add it to cart! or share it with a friend or maybe even a blog ;). Show all of your friends on Facebook your amazing creation, who knows, maybe NIKE will find you and pick your brain for more idea!

Bumper-sticker Tutorial

Create a bumper sticker.

For this bumper-sticker assignment tutorial we are going to be using Pixlr’s Editor web app. This image editing software is entirely online and will require you to register an account to use it.

x site

Step 1: I started by setting the size of the image to 1024 x 768.

x size

Step 2: Put a rectangle that takes up the top half of the rectangle and use the “paint can” to color it one color. Then do the same for the bottom if you’re using two colors.

x red

x blue

Step 3: Next, if you want to use a picture, go to Layer (on the top), Open Image As New Layer, select an image, and click okay.

x layer

I chose to make a Bernie Sanders bumper sticker:

x bernie

Step 4: Now its time to add some words to our bumper sticker. To do this, click the “Type Tool” on the tool bar (the image of an A) and click anywhere on your bumper sticker to create a text box and start typing. Pick a type font and change the font size to your own liking. Here is my now completed bumper sticker:

x finsihed

Step 5: For this step, all you have to do is get up from your chair and yell “WOOHOO I MADE A BUMPER STICKER” because you have no completed the assignment. Just save it onto your computer and you’re all good to go.

Tutorial for 256 Points

Today, we have the luxury of fast computers with lots of memory and power. However, that wasn’t always the case, and graphics designers had to make due with very limited capabilities. For this assignment, you are to draw a person, vehicle, or otherwise intricate object. The catch is, your image can only be 16 pixels by 16 pixels! Work to express as much detail as possible in the space allotted. If the size is not constraining, you are not setting your standards high enough! Feel free to enlarge the picture before putting it online, but remember that your resolution must still be that of a 16×16 pixel image.

This tutorial for the 256 Points assignment uses Microsoft Paint since it is the most easily accessible image creating software for people with a Windows operating system.

Pros of using Microsoft Paint:

  • Free and comes loaded on the computer.
  • Very simple and easy to use.

Cons of Microsoft Paint:

  • Not a lot of editing features.
  • Almost too simple.

Now time for the tutorial.

Step 1: Open up Microsoft Paint.

paint

Step 2: Now look at the toolbar at the top of the screen and locate the “Resize” button (right next to the dotted square that says select under) and click it. Then click the circle labeled “Pixels”

paint resize

This is where were are going to resize the image in order to get the desired 16×16 pixel dimension. To do that, we first have to un-check the box labeled “Maintain aspect ratio” so the dimensions we type in won’t change. Next, click on the box to the right of “Horizontal ” and change it to 16. Then do the same for the box to the right of “Vertical.”

Lastly, click “OK.”

paint ok

It should now look like this on your screen:

paint small

Step 3: I know it seems small but that’s okay since it is exactly what we want. But we can’t exactly draw a picture like this so we need to zoom in. To do this, look at the bottom right of the screen and find the “zoom” bar which looks like this:

paint zom

Then click the + sign till it reaches 800%.

paint bottom right

It should now look something like this:

paint 16x16

Step 4: This is still a little bit hard to draw something with since we have no guide to see where exactly the pixels start and end. Luckily, Microsoft Paint has a handy feature which outlines the pixels in a grid. To use this feature, click on the “View” tab at the top of the screen and click the box labeled “Gridlines.”

paint gridlines

Step 5: Now that we have each and every pixel clearly visible, we can start drawing our image. Using the default brush, change the size of its area of effect to the smallest available (which is only one pixel).

paint size

Step 6: The rest is all up to you! Think about what you are going to draw, choose your colors and start painting. Then when you’re done, unclick the “Gridlines” box to see your full image! Personally, I decided to draw a red car and here is my final product:

paint car

Step Two:

Make a collage of the photos you want to use. There are many different websites that make collages. You can simply Google ‘collage maker’ and chose from one of the search results.
