Album Cover

full of doubts

For this assignment we were to design an album cover using some random information:

  • from wikpedia my band name was : OutlookSoft
  • from a random quotation page, my album title: “Full of Doubts”
  • from a random flickr page, my album cover is of a church.

I darken or desaturated the church by using a free photo-editing software called GIMP2.6. I added the text and that’s about it. I like the idea of a dark, ominous grand church being coupled with the title “Full Of Doubts”. I’m really happy how the two came together giving a sad, hard, possibly confused message which is often associated with church or God.  I find the group name ‘OutlookSoft’ as funny, maybe even fitting. I can see how the terms ‘outlook’, ‘doubts’, and ‘god’ can be associated together in terms of faith or destiny. This was an easy task, but I think I just lucked out with my random items. I could see how if others might not fit together and would require more editing.

Drive Creep

Visual Assignent Count: 9

Boom-shack-la-ka:

I liked this assignment, its really fun to imagine how you would creep in a movie scene. For anyone whose seen Drive you know it just full of pregnant pauses. A creepers dream.

And yes. that is me with a goatee, and a tie wrapped around my head. It was a long night, and I was also creeping IRL.

Theodore Roosevelt and the Dakota Wilderness

Pick A Bad Photo, Apply A Vintage Effect And Write Something In Helvetica

I went on a trip to North Dakota to go hunting with my grandfather and took this picture. Didn’t really like the picture, but I do think it accurately represents ND, in that its sort of barren, but the sky was beautiful. I also had to sub Arial for Helvetica, I’ve got Windows OS. I knew Theodore Roosevelt was an outdoorsman so I searched around to see if I could find one that fit.

Some Sort of Musical Fusion

An Album Cover

I don’t know if I’d necessarily buy this album… Mehndi TV is a Canadian Hindi television station and Michele Shea’s quote “Creativity is…seeing something that doesn’t exist already. You need to find out how you can bring it into being and that way be a playmate with God,” became “Be a playmate with God,” which to me, sounds a little off. I had to bend the rules a little bit on the photo, I only looked at “3rd photos” but had to re-roll for a while until I found a photo with the necessary copyright allowances.

Take a Look, Its In a Book. Slide Guy..

Visual Assignment Count: 7

This one took some thinking. What in the hell could I super impose this jolly man on top of? Go meta and put him an a slide of himself? A building? Then I remembered a popular children’s show and the old adage: Less is more. Observer:

Its like Where’s Waldo. Not only that, but slide guy is now promoting literacy.

So That’s What It Means!

First let’s see if you can figure it out:

Now while you think on it let me describe the assignment. In it, for those of you who were to lazy to click the link, you need to go to this site and nab a word that has no English translation, get an image, and try and convey the words definition. I think this image–one of dem der interwebs memes–really conveys the idea of the words.

Okay reveal time. The word “espirit d’escalier” roughly translates to “stair wit” and it means “to think of a comeback when it’s too late” (we’ve all been there, amiright?).

Demotivate? Observation? Same?

Okay so I did this visual assignment next:

At first I was a little confused about how to make the image, but then I tried this website, and it was as simple as…..toast.

A Blue Hue

Playing the Guitar

Note: Must have an iPhone to complete this tutorial. And have good hand eye coordination.

This is a photo of me from this summer. The company that I was interning for had a company picnic, and had several little competitions. One of these competitions was a hula hoop contest. I won–my hips finally paid off for something. And this gem (the blow up guitar) was my prize. Don’t hate on it, I love it. Anyways, so, to demonstrate my love for it I chose it to be the victim of my visual assignment.

For this assignment, I downloaded a free app on my phone called “Dash of Color.” This app is pretty cool. It takes a photo that you either have in your library already, or allows you to snap one. From here your picture will be turned to gray-scale automatically.

Once changed, on the bottom of your screen you will see 5 different buttons, all labeled: “gray-scale”, “color”, “zoom”, “undo”, and “finish”.

To begin, select the color button. Zoom in on the object you want to change back to its original color. Then, using your finger tip, carefully fill in the details of your object. If you make a mark that you did not mean to you can either use the gray-scale button again and change it back, or you can press the undo button. When you are satisfied with your picture, press the finish button. It will ask if you would like to tweet this photo, add it your phone’s library of pictures, share it on facebook. email it, and a plethora of other options. Choose what you would like to do from there, and you are home free. Share your picture on the ds106 assignment site! I would love to see what you all come up with, and the stories behind your photos.

Return to the Scene for the Crime

Hey Eagles! Did you know that Campus Walk was nonexistent until 1985?! That’s right the school used to have a road going right down the middle of campus! Originally called Campus Drive, it bricked over in order to promote a pedestrian friendly and smaller community. The transformation was met by tons of protest, but ultimately it was seen as a wonderfully addition.  For all you eagles complaining about the sunken gates being closed and having to drive around the perimeter of Mary Washington…blame those who voted in favor of bricking up Campus Drive. However those of you who chose this school for is cozy, comfortable, close-knit community, you can praise our ancestors who vote in favor of Campus Walk.

Common Everyday objects

The assignment was to take an everyday object and manipulate the colors.

My original object is a chair in my dorm room. As you can see it is brown and white with geometric patterns. I have a aqua-blue pillow on the chair. Notice how the wall stickers and lamp shades are all in the same color pallet of brown, blue, green, white.

room

Using photo-editing software called Gimp 2.6, I played around adjusting colors. Making things “coloized’ in a particular hue. I ended up really like how “inverting” the colors looked.

room

“Inverting” the colors means the software detects which color is displayed and, then, swaps them out for the opposite. If you look at a color wheel this becomes more logical. Example: Blue would be swapped with orange , yellow swaps with purple, etc.

I think it is interesting to see what my room would look like if I had chosen a more feminine color pallet with pinks and purples dominating my accents. I also really like the ghostly effect it gives my photography.
