3 Stars: Audio Dream Stories

Hi all! Sorry that it’s been a few weeks since my last update.  I’m lazy.  Anyways, for this assignment, I chose to do the “Audio Dream Stories” assignment that was very similar to the sound effects story that I did earlier in the year.  Basically, we had to use freesounds.org to tell a story with just sounds, but this time the story had to be a dream.  I chose a nightmare!

This is a nightmare that I used to have quite frequently.  There was a period in my life where every single dream I had that I could remember involved zombies, and it always ended with my left kidney being eaten and me jerking awake like it was actually happening.  Why the left kidney? Who knows.

I started out by designing what I wanted to have happen in the story.  In this story, a man would be running from a horde of zombies and would eventually fall down and be devoured post-haste.  So I searched the various terms on freesound.org and pulled out each of these wonderful sounds.  I even included a Wilhelm scream for shits and giggles because I love hearing it.  Finally, I included the gasping sound to indicate that the man had woken up.  From there, I rearranged all of the tracks in audacity and decreased the decibel level on the running and zombie tracks and increased the level on the falling track.  Then I exported it and uploaded it to soundcloud.

3/10 Stars for weeks 7 & 8 done.  And now: for a little teaser for something I plan to upload on Sunday (if I can get over a certain designer’s block).

Coming Soon!

Chipmunk’d Boyfriend.

This is audio assignment 494, worth 3 stars. It is called “Mainstream Chipmunkd” and the details were:

“The object of this assignment is to take a mainstream artist and chipmunk them. As we reflect on our childhoods we realize that all the chipmunks were an awesome bunch and it is really easy to do this assignment. All you need is any kind of musical editing software like MIXXX and Virtual DJ (which are free). Second either raise the BPM (beats per minute) or edit pitch of the track. If it is a slower track just raise the tempo and try to give the song an upbeat personality. Make sure to tag your assignment and have fun!

Over the past few years Justin Bieber has been in the spotlight. Whether someone is worshiping him or putting him down, I hear his name a lot! Justin even has life-size cardboard cutouts of himself. I know this because my little sister has one in her room. It catches me off guard EVERY time, it scares me whenever I walk into her room.

I don’t really listen to much of his music unless I am with my sister, it isn’t really my style. I decided to use his song “Boyfriend” for this assignment because I thought it would be really funny to hear it in a chipmunk voice. It is basically about him wanting to be someone’s boyfriend, and now it’s a chipmunk wanting to be the boyfriend. I like this version SO much better and who wouldn’t want a chipmunk as a boyfriend?

I used Audacity to create this. It was pretty simple, I just speed up the tempo of the song (under effects).

Bad Body Style – feat. Carley and Bieber

Saved the best for last!! (Actually, maybe not the best, but definitely the hardest!) I’ve been sitting here working on “The Contest Nobody Could Win” Assignment for about 2 hours…and sadly, I am not a winner.

BUT that’s okay, because I had fun and got to mess with audio! (This makes me want to remix songs…but for some reason I know that won’t go well :P ) This Assignment asked to take 6 very short fragments of songs, and put them into a single piece…Well, I definitely breached my 6 second limit and ended up with about 30 extra seconds! Audio Assignment – 1 Rob – 0 But truly, I think this assignment is better named, “The Impossible Contest”. Otherwise this would just be a 6 second shriek of crazy audio/voices. I hand it to those who put the effort into creating something really good in 6 seconds…But, I think with 6 longer pieces of songs, I created a nifty little story! Especially since a lot of music nowadays is sexual, I think this is super-perfect! And when some of the song changes happen, they happen a lot smoother than I had anticipated, so that made my life easier!

Anyways, enjoy and tell me what you think!

COMMENT BELOW AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU’VE CONQUERED THIS ASSIGNMENT!

“The teams with names always die first.”

You know, if all group projects came together this beautifully, I might not hate them so much.

Our radio group consisted of me, Daniel, Crystal, Paul, and Rob (who was thrown to the wolves into our group at the last minute), and from the moment that Daniel asked if I’d be interested in doing the show with him and Paul, I knew we had a winning team on our hands. I pulled Crystal into the mix as a fourth member, and while Rob was added to our group after we’d already decided on a theme and basic plot, he proved more than willing to commit to our crazy.

A bit late for a radio...

I think that’s what set our team apart from other project groups I’ve been part of: from the beginning, we were all incredibly enthusiastic about putting together an awesome show. Initially we’d all gotten to know each other through active participation on the ds106 Twitter hashtag, and when Prof. Levine said we could choose our own groups it took us less than 24 hours to figure out that we all wanted to work together.

From our first meeting it was clear that although each team member had different strengths, our group was able to let each person do whatever they were best at. As we progressed through writing, recording, and editing the show, that proved to be one of our greatest assets, right along with our willingness to fully invest in the project as a whole. As it turned out, I ended up writing most of the script, Daniel did the majority of the audio editing and everybody else contributed at least two finished bits of audio that were incorporated into the show in the form of fake commercials or radio bumpers. When it turned out that I was way better at commercials than bumpers, for example, Crystal was willing to create an extra bumper to fill my spot.

Getting down to recording the audio was a blast, though it did come with a few challenges. Because our show had a very off-the-cuff feel to it in terms of dialogue, much of what we recorded was initially unscripted. We spent much of our first recording session knocking around in the recording studio in Dupont to simulate the sound of a bunch of people exploring a new environment. However, in reviewing the audio we recorded during our first run-through, Daniel realized that although our recording was good, it wasn’t telling enough of a story. During our second meeting, which Paula and Daniel generously hosted in their basement, I re-wrote parts of the script and made the show more structured overall. We decided to try and reveal aspects of the world and especially of our characters slowly, and then gradually show the breakdown of the radio station and the team as the show progressed, which also alluded to the way the world outside was falling apart. Thanks to our recording location, we were also able to employ Daniel and Paul’s housemate Matt, who acted as our DJ, for a second cameo as the hysterical Hemp Guy. We ended up re-recording all of our audio that night and left at about 1 AM, which just goes to show how dedicated our entire team was to this project.

Even though much of the technical editing work fell to Daniel and the writing was my biggest contribution to the show, I got the sense that nobody felt singled out or overworked. The two of us fell into our roles naturally based on what we enjoy doing and what we’re good at, and at every turn the rest of the team was there to offer advice, suggestions and moral support. I wrote nearly all of the script during our group meetings, and would often ask a team member what they would say in a given situation, or if the room at large thought a scene was funny. In the same way, when Daniel was up till all hours editing our audio we’d all pile into a Google hangout together. Even though he was doing most of the editing we were all there to give him feedback and support, and I’ve never been part of a group project that was willing to just sit around while one member of the team worked on the final product. Sticking around to watch him edit, even remotely, was also a great learning experience; Daniel was by far the most skilled audio editor on our team, and seeing the way he worked taught me a lot about using Audacity effectively.

RADIO!

Everybody say ZOMBIES!

By the time we wrapped up the final edits at 1 AM this morning, the whole team wasn’t just elated to be finished, we were all psyched that we’d been part of such a great experience. You know a group project was successful when you’ve established in-jokes, plan t-shirts for the team and have spent the majority of your time laughing rather than feeling hassled. I feel like that’s an experience unique to a class like ds106, mainly because it was clear from the beginning that we were free to create, explore and experiment however we saw fit. Possessing that kind of freedom made it easy to take a project that could  have easily been bogged down by excessive requirements and turn it into something that nobody else could have produced.

Spring BREAK!!!

For anyone who has ever watched MTV, or any show on television really, you know that Spring Break is a time when people go on vacation, binge drink, dance, party, engage in debauchery, and many other crude and inappropriate behaviors. So what do you think spring break is going to sound like?

For me Spring break is just a break from school, nota vacation. I spend spring break at work, directing people at kings dominion into the station and onto the tracks. This is one of the spiels I have to do OVER AND OVER again. (I say this spiel maybe 20-30 times an hour on a busy day. Now before I get a bunch of comments saying how horrible the recording quality is, it’s not. The sound was made intentionally to sound as if I were actually spieling over a, often crappy and broken, microphone in a smallish room. I had a revorb, some feedback, a delay, and some slight tweaking of levels and such. I think the sound came out fairly accurate to the way in sounds in the ride station… at least from my end, so for those of you who have been to Kings Dominion how did I do replicating the sound?

Conversing With Myself

Multiple Personality Disorder, often misclassified as Schizophrenia, is a mental disorder in which a person has multiple persons living inside of them, each with their own individuality, thoughts and behaviors. In this assignment we were to make a sort of skit where we pretended to be be different people. I wondered for a good while, as I was completing other homework for the week, what I would say in this conversation with myself. I came up with the idea to take a post on facebook where a conversation was being held (I always hated when people would start having conversations on my facebook status) and acted it out, it’s a scene where one of my friends trice to decide what to dress her baby as for her first Halloween . I didn’t want to just record me in different voices, I thought I’d try editing it too. I recorded the voices as I would think the would talk, meter, phrasing, inflections etc. but in my voice. I recorded the conversation with breaks in between speech so as to easily identify when the voice needed to chance then in Audition I edited pitch applied some general filters and mastering to each, and removed the gaps. I was involved in this conversation so I was able to leave one voice untouched! For those of you wondering I don’t think she decided on a costume. If you have any suggestions I’ll give them to her.

Tlick-Tlock

A familiar sound in my room, pretty annoying to everyone else. It’s the ticking of my wall clock, a sound I never noticed until I had my boyfriend stay the night. It kept us both up at night once it was pointed out to me, it is an easy fix though all I need to do is turn on my fan (which has a timer so I can fall asleep before it goes off without having to have it on all night). It’s almost like Captain Hooks ticking croke clock. What I really wanted to do for this project was this awful Howling sound the dogs make whenever my sister leaves for work in the morning.but of course they never do it when you are ready to record… they started after I put my phone away and went back to my room for some unknown reason. probably just to spite me.

Chipmunk

After Alvin and the Chipmunks there became a whole new set of replaying songs at higher speeds which make the vocals seem higher pitched. I use to do this all the time especially on my dads old record player (it was the only thing I could find that would actually play things at different tempos. This was actually quite the task for me even though it shouldn’t have really been that hard, I decided that since I was so fond of Adobe’s Photoshop that I would love Audition, their audio editing software, but it was actually quite a pain to us. Though to be honest photoshop was difficult at first too so I figured I’d play around with it before going back to audacity (which I still had yet to master). One of the things I liked about Audition though was I was able to slightly increase the pitch of the song as well as increasing the BPM so the song sounded chipmunked but not like it was just being played too fast. This was a hard feature to find though, the only way I figured out how to do it was to work in multitrack mode which didn’t occur to me as I only had the one audio track i was working on. Once I figured out the features of the new software it was quite an easy task to do… I still don’t like audio work and can’t wait to go back to photoshop I was having too much fun with that.

CHIPMUNKd’ MUSIC

The second Audio Assignment that I decided to complete for this week was the Mainstream Chimpunkd’ assignment.  I decided to do this assignment mainly because I think chipmunks sound HILARIOUS!!! The main object was to turn a mainstream song/artist into a chimpunkd’ song.

I decided to go about this by once again using Audacity. I simply imported the song “Red” by Taylor Swift … The main reason I did this song is because it is popular on the charts now and in my head I pictured her voice sounding hilarious as a chipmunk. After importing the song I decided to mess around with the pitch…. therefore changing Taylor Swift’s voice throughout the song. I got to the pitch by highlighting the entire song, then simply clicking Effects on the menu bar and scrolling down to “change pitch”. After I clicked on change pitch I just began messing around with where I wanted the pitch to be… I began all the way on the right and listened to that, until I finally found my ideal Chipmunkd’ voice. After all of that I exported my file onto my desktop… labeling it “Red Chipmunkd’” and than once again, I uploaded it to my Soundcloud.

I found this assignment extremely fun because for once …. I got to dictate how a song sounded. I thought there were various ways for changing the pitch in which the song still sounded really good…. I personally think having this particular mainstream song Chipmunkd’ just makes it so much funnier. Here’s my chipmunkd’ art piece.

My brand new RINGTONE

In the course of these past two weeks, we have been asked to complete at least 10 stars worth of Audio Assignments. The first assignment that I thought I would do, asked for us to create our own RINGTONE. I really wanted to do this assignment because I love my phone, but I never really deviate away from the standard ringtones … I think it takes too much time to download some and all of that stuff. I figured if I created my own ringtone, then maybe I would like it so much that I could use it on my phone….. getting tired of the typical “Xylophone” ringtone on my iPhone.

The process for making my own ringtone wasn’t that hard considering I already had Audacity downloaded on my computer from a previous assignment. Since I have already become familiarized with the how Audacity works, I simply imported a song that I had already downloaded onto my iTunes…. the song I chose was “Don’t wake me up” by Chris Brown. Once the song was imported it was easy for me to cut out the parts that I didn’t really want. I think I listened to the song about 10 times before finally deciding on the perfect part for my ringtone. When I finally did find my favorite part of the song I simply made sure it was under 40 seconds …. and that it sounded like a ringtone, at least one that I could hear and want to answer. After that was complete…. I exported the song onto my desktop, labeling it as “Don’t wake me up Ringtone” and then logged onto my Soundcloud and uploaded it there. The good news is that I actually liked my ringtone and have started using it as my OWN ringtone as of today!!! I didn’t realize how simple it would be to make my own ringtone, I’m sure now that I know it’s simplicity I will be making more and more ringtones as better songs that catch my eye come out.

This is how my ringtone turned out, I even enabled it for download incase someone wanted to use it as well. Enjoy!!
