Come Chipmunk With Me

Ready for a fun Audio Assignment? Because when I saw this, I knew exactly which artist I wanted to use. The assignment was called “Mainstream Chipmunk’d“, and we were  supposed to take a mainstream song and make it sound like a chipmunk is singing it. If you’ve never heard of Alvin and the Chipmunks…you may want to read up and listen to some of their tunes!

Anyways, I chose to pick a song, that isn’t necessarily mainstream now, but more like 1958! This may seem totally wrong and horrible, but I decided to chipmunk Frank Sinatra’s Come Fly With Me!!

So I created this by using Fastest Youtube Downloader to download the song straight from Youtube and uploaded it to Audacity. From there, it was recommended to just change the Beats Per Minute(BPM). However, I first played with the pitch, which actually sounded good. But when the vocals went away and the instruments came in, they seemed to screech. So then I changed the tempo, which sped up the screeching(which makes it bearable) but also makes the audio seem even more upbeat than it already was!

The end result, I think, makes for a good Chipmunk’s song. I also like that I didn’t make Frank Sinatra have the squeakiest voice in the world, like most people do when the they edit a track…to me, he sounds a little like Simon!

Skit scatting

On of my favorite movies to quote is The Grinch . The cartoon movie isn’t as funny as the Jim Carry version. I don’t know why but I just think JIm Carry is so funny in that movie with all the clever Dr. Sues lines. The voice and mannerisms of the Grinch are just fun to imitate. I saw the audio assignment to do a skit with multiple characters by yourself.  And decided to do the Grinch! I looked up the script for the grinch and found a shortened one for a play.  After a couple fail trials I got a scene from the script down!

Fall into Autumn: A ds106 Radio bumper

I’ve already done a radio bumper for the radio bumper assignment, but this was the one for our radio show. I like this one better because it is “themed.” I can’t find the original sounds from freesound, of course. But the first one you hear is the crunching of leaves. Then you hear my voice with a slight echo and a funky piano behind it. Then I decided to “layer” it with a softer leave crunching noise, which is the end.
I really enjoy making these bumpers!

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

This assignment is called “Seuss it.” It is audio assignment 562 and it is worth 3 stars. The assignment read:

”Take a Dr. Seuss book, or perhaps the Berenstain Bears, or one of your own favorites, and read it to us. Give me your best Yertle the Turtle, or Lorax, or Mama Bear and have fun!”
As soon as I saw this assignment in the repository, I knew I absolutely had to do it! Dr. Seuss books played a huge role in my childhood. He probably deserves most of the credit for teaching me to read. We had an awesome collection of Dr. Seuss books! I think at one point I had a few memorized. I would read them for hours, even out loud to my little sister sometimes.
Choosing which book to use for this assignment was very difficult because I really do love them all! I thought hard about which one to read and finally decided on “Oh, the Places You’ll Go.” When I graduated high school my mom gave my two best friends and I a copy of “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” and inside the front covers she wrote a personal letter to each of us. In the letter she said why she was proud of each of us and things that she sees in each of our futures. I thought this was a good choice for the assignment because I really like the messages with in the book. Even though it is a children’s book the underlying message can really apply to our adult lives.
This assignment was pretty simple! I recorded it in Audacity and then uploaded it to soundcloud. It was a little time consuming because I recorded it a few times before I was content with the way it sounded.

With A Perspective, I’m Melinda

A 4-star assignment: A Life In Two Minutes: Create a 2 minute audio story inspired by the “My Life is True” series produced by KQED of Northern California. KQED works with people “to explain, in their own words, a significant moment or stubborn problem.” Work with a friend or tell a story about yourself that describes such a moment or problem. Be sure to keep it at two minutes or less! Thanks to GNA Garcia for posting a link to this awesome site on Twitter and inspiring assignment ideas for DS106.

Transcript:

He doesn’t need a chair to assist him with mobility like Jill, the girl I work for, he doesn’t need an attending to sit with him during the day and he never required hospitalization. He needs help with the way that he learns, processes, and retells information. My life took a backseat, but I understood that because he was the baby and he was the boy. My brother’s learning disability put us in two separate schools by the time I was 10 and he 9. I learned to love solitude never socializing outside of class because it was something I was comfortable with. It wasn’t until I watched a video on paws4people at the age of 21 about a girl named Amanda that made me stop and think twice about all the little moments and questions that sat neglected. I discovered how many holes in my memories and in my stories and in my perception of my brother and of family I had. I still don’t know what kind of learning disorder he has. I still don’t know the severity of financial weight we are under because of his schooling and testings, but I know that is a driving factor for the things my family is doing now and for the decisions I have yet to make.

While this just seems like a story calling for the pity party festivities to begin, there are a lot of things needing to be addressed because of having a brother with an invisible disability. This is a call to action for the parents to keep all parties informed and included. A call to action for the awareness of such invisible disabilities whether they be physical, emotional, mental or social or any other types. Above all, this is for the caretakers, educators, and other family members affected by those with disabilities – you are NOT alone. Having a brother with these kinds of issues makes me more aware of the holes in our educational system and compassionate for those with visible and invisible disabilities.

Vergnügungen von Bertolt Brecht

A 1-star Poetry Reading assignment: Poetry is meant to be read aloud. Select a poem – it can be a personal favorite or one you find randomly – and read it aloud in a way that itself makes it a story. Then at the ending of that poem extend it or connect it to a story — this has to be more than just reading a poem to be a story.

Potato Pancakes

A 2-star multi-taskory assignment: Record a small snippet of audio of you trying to accomplish two or more tasks at the same time that are difficult for you. Imagine the old “pat your head and rub your tummy” only with two tasks that can come across well with audio.

breakfast by melindakumi

I recorded this on my phone so I was not just trying to cook and prepare breakfast but hold my phone while doing those things.  I burned a couple of the potato things but it was still quite yummy.

Boy Band Mashup

I actually came across this assignment when pushing the random assignment button in the assignment bank. I only need two more stars to complete my 10 for the week and was looking for something simple and fun to do. I came across The Contest Nobody Could Win. The title didn’t really make sense to me for an audio assignment so I decided to pursue it further. It ended up being basically a six song mashup. I hear my roommate doing mashups all the time for the dance team and thought it would be interesting to do. I decided to take boy bands from the 90′s (I honestly have no idea why I came up with this theme). I actually already had all of the songs on my ipod which was very convenient. I just uploaded them to Audacity, and then cut them. I zoomed in to get a good cut on them, then moved them to the order I wanted. It was quite simple (which is exactly what I needed this week) but I had a lot of fun doing it! The songs brought back memories of the good ol’ days.

For some reason, I couldn’t get the file to upload to soundcloud to post it, so I went ahead and just uploaded it using Word Press. The link is above.

OMG white after labor day.

Another AudioAssignment I chose to do this week was called, Multipersonality, worth 4 stars. I chose this because I thought it would be a fun assignment.  I opened up audacity and went into the File tab and clicked on new template.  I then pressed the record button and acted as if I were different high schoolers in the hallway talking about what a person was wearing.  After each individual I stopped recording and then started a new recording, so each “individual” in the clip had their own section.  I then played around with the pitch and depth to give each individual their own voice/sound to make them distinct.  After I finished editing I went into the File tab and clicked on export, saving the creation as Multipersonality White after Labor Day.  I then opened up soundcloud.com and uploaded the sound clip and added the tags: ds106, laborday, white, AudioAssignments, AudioAssignments91 and multipersonality.

I then had soundcloud make a tweet for the creation…

For this audio assignment, pretend that you are three to four persons having a regular conversation. Pick any scenario that you are comfortable with but make it convincing that there are different people within the conversation. ie: at the dinner table you have a little girl, a hick father, with an Asian mother talking to each other: create those voices. and HAVE FUN with it!

Go Dog Go!!!

For one of my AudioAssignments I chose one called Suess it, worth 3 stars.  I first went downstairs to my moms room and found a few Dr. Seuss books and chose my favorite, Go Dog Go.  THis book has always been my favorite because I love the dog party at the end and just the fact that the book is based on dogs.  After choosing the book I opened up audacity and went into the File tab and clicked new. When I was ready to read the book I grabbed 2 of my dogs to read to and then pressed the record button, red circle inside a square button. I then read the whole book to my dogs…which looked clearly interested…sense they slept the whole time…..  Once I was done reading I pressed the yellow stop button near the record button and then went to the File tab and pressed export, labeling the creation, Reading Dr. Seuss Go Dog Go. I then uploaded the creation onto sound cloud and added the tags, ds106, Dr.Seuss, AudioAssignments, AudioAssignments562, dogs, and storytime.
