A Slow Life’s Sound

Let me be honest here: I was dreading this sound effects story after that bumper. I was thinking it would take me hours of drawing out the sounds, finding the right layering, getting the right effects. UGH.

Finally I decided I just need to start thinking about what I want to do. I listened to a few examples from the assignment bank and got some ideas.

Then I spent a few minutes with my eyes closed as I tried to think of a memory that is mostly sounds.

After lots of “Oh I can’t do that without someone speaking,” I finally came up with a convenience store. The sound of the door chime, the slurpee machine, the refrigerators, the cash register–that would make sense!

So I started at the beginning, opening the door. I searched on FreeSound.org for a ringing bell. Everything had talking in it, though!  That’s when I spotted this gem.

So many memories of hearing that bell during Christmas time, I wanted to do a story with it.

Now, I’d prefer that everyone listens to the sound effect story before reading about how I made it.

So listen to it first!

Click here to learn more about the story.

Like I was saying before the sound clip…

I started off with that bell ringer.

Then I started to think about where the person who is hearing it came from.

How did he get to the place where he would hear this person ringing the charity bell?

I made up this story in my head of a lonely man on Christmas Eve who had nothing to do. No family, no friends, no pets. So he goes to the mall, hoping to take in some of the warmth from the other people there.

Of course it’s raining on this lonely night.

He gets in his car and drives silently to the mall. He parks, gets out of his car, and opens his umbrella.  Walking into the mall, he starts to hear the sound of the bell. He knows that he won’t just pass this time. He puts a few coins of spare change he had in his pocket into the tin bucket and feels a little bit better about his choice to come to the mall.

It’s a stretch, but I like it.

So where did I get all these sounds? FreeSound.org!

Click here for more on the sounds I used.

And here is a screenshot of all the sounds put in Audition for this particular audio story.

I had a lot of fun making this after I got my story in my head down. I originally couldn’t find just walking on pavement sounds, so I adapted to an even sadder story where it’s raining.

A Sound only Story

EEK! I’m literally about to jump up and down over this assignment, I’m just SO EXCITED!!

Honestly, when I read through this weeks work I was dreading this assignment. I thought it was going to be TERRIBLE. But it turned out to be pretty easy and really fun! It took me about 5 minutes to come up with an idea (who am I?) I normally take forever to decide upon an idea.

I am an on-again, off-again runner. Currently I’m in the “off-again” phase, it’s just to cold outside. I digress. During my running days of 2012 I ran/walked in 4, 5ks. So that’s how I came up with the idea of creating a “running race story”.

Take a listen. Then I’ll share more after.

What do you think?

I got all 5 sounds from FreeSound.org

After downloading all the sounds, I used audacity to layer them all together. I faded in the cheering, at the beginning. Everything layered over another sound and at the end I let the “breathing sound” continue to give the “post race, just crossed the finish line effect” I’m just so excited with how this assignment turned out!

Sailing into Ds106 Radio

I learned a lot this week by working on audio stories. Mainly how perfectionism and indecisiveness do not work well together, but I learned some other things, too.

For this week’s assignment, I created a bumper for DS106radio.

As per this wikipedia article, a bumper is

a brief announcement, usually two to [fifteen] seconds that can contain a voice over, placed between a pause in the program and its commercial break, and vice versa. The host, the program announcer or a continuity announcer states the title (if any) of the presentation, the name of the program, and the broadcast or cable network, though not necessarily in that order.

So with that knowledge and with some examples from the assignment page, I went off to download everything I needed to be awesome at this bumper thing.

MY ADVENTURE

First things first — I downloaded Audacity, an audio editor.

I am that person who does not read directions. I jump in, press buttons, and get messy for a few hours. If I still can’t figure out how to do something after that, I look for help.

So, I didn’t look at the suggested video detailing how to work with Audacity until Wednesday night.

By then, however, I had basically given up on Audacity. I didn’t like the sound effects, and I wanted something that resembled the video editors I have worked with before.

That’s when I remembered that I am subscribed to Adobe’s Creative Cloud!

I get access to all of Adobe’s creative software. I figured that they just had to have something for audio. I mean, it’s Adobe.

That’s when I found Adobe Audition CS6. It was like being home.

I picked up on everything much quicker and started working on my bumper.

Here you can see the difference in workspaces:

AUDACITY

ADOBE AUDITION CS6

What you see in that last screenshot of Audition is actually my bumper mixtrack. The green tracks are ones that are actually playing. The gray ones were ones I was just messing around with.

I recorded my voice right into Audition. Tracks 2 and 4 are my voice. Track 2 has been modified to have less static/noise. Track 4 also has my voice, but as you can see by the lines going up and down on it, I played around with this one a lot more. It has a “Far Away” effect and also goes up and down in volume.

The final track that is green, Track 5, is the song “Sail” by AWOLNATION. (Here is the YouTube video for those who haven’t heard it before.)

And here is the final product

I could have done more with it, like adding more effects. I just got so frustrated trying to find the sounds that I wanted on Freesound.org.

Sound isn’t something I’m entirely comfortable with yet. Give me video, and I’m on top of my game. But with sound, I can’t find what I’m looking for without making it myself.

Sound Effect Story

On top of making a radio bumper this week, we also had to dabble in sound effects!  We were challenged to create a short story using nothing but sound effects.

To begin, I went to Youtube to find the various sounds I wanted to use.  The ds106 handbook  says that I could have used KeepVid.com to download the videos, however that site just would NOT work for me!  Instead, I googled what else I could use, and came up with iLivid.  After finding my sounds and downloading them via iLivid, I used MPEG StreamClip to trim the sound to exactly the amount I wanted.  I then opened Audacity to put the sound into there.  Looking back, I probably could have just trimmed the sound in Audacity, but I was having trouble with that when making my bumper, so I didn’t try it again.

After all that, I came out with this story!  It wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but I went with whatever sounds were easily available.

I used a whistling and walking sound effect, bugs bunny “Eh, What’s up doc?”, a shot gun sound effect, bugs bunny screaming, and a running sound effect all from Youtube.

Bump it Up!

The other audio assignment ever was to create a radio bumper for our DS 106 radio show. A bumper is a 10-30 second pause between a commerical break and a program. You know, the things that play on your favorite radio station that go something like “back to the music faster, 13.1 Miss Runner Bug Radio Broadcasting System” :) Well here it is:

I knew that creating a radio bumper would be helpful for the DS 106 radio. {explain the story behind the work}

When I first read the assignment prompt, I was intimidated {I feel like I have said that work a lot this week, maybe it is because it’s audio week!}. But I wanted to challenge myself and I knew that I would be proud of myself when it was all done. I had already downloaded Audacity and LAME from my sound effect story assignment {you can read about all of the trouble I had with that as well as hear my sound effect story in my blog post} After I got the programs ready, I stared at the screen for a while. I went into panic mode because no ideas came into my head. So, I went for a run.

rrrrr

When I’m running, my head clears and creative ideas start flowing. When I came back, I knew what I wanted to do. I went to freesound.org to download some FREE sounds – if you didn’t figure that’s what it had from the website title. I had no idea about this site but when I was reading Karissa’s blog post, I came across the website and decided to check it out. I recorded my voice and did some layering and voilà: my radio bumper!

Want to know the funniest thing about this assignment? {besides how funny I sound with a low-pitched voice} I actually listen to radio commericials now. I know the process they had to go through to make it and I sort of appreciate {if you will} them. I wonder how long that will last – I am a stickler for being the “channel surfer” in the car!

Running on Sound Effects

The other audio assignment that was assigned this week was called the Sound Effect Story. Making a story with only sounds was definitely a challange, but it was fun to do!

I got the sounds tying shoes, bang, water bottle, and running from freesound.org. The girl drinking her water and saying ‘ah‘ at the end is yours truly :) I chose to do combine these sounds because, I’m sure you all know by now – I love to run. I layered these sounds in a program called Audacity. I couldn’t download LAME, which is a mp3 converter. I had the hardest time with that {rather lame if you ask me}. But after many downloads, many frusterations, and many failed attempts, I finally got it to work. I honestly don’t even know how! I just started clicking buttons. {I think I might have installed the wrong one at first because now my internet is acting funky and won’t open new tabs! Uhhh} However, it was very easy to put these all together after I watched Professor Levine’s video on Audacity.

ddddd

‘Seriously, if I didn’t have the DS 106 handbook and the weekly check-list, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself!

Princess Goes to Best Buy

Well here I am, doing both audio assignments for the week in one night! Typically, I spend about two days brainstorming ideas on what I want to do my assignments on, and then spend the rest of the week working on them. Not having class on Wednesday and Friday really are quite the blessing because I get to spend all day in my royal throne (my bed), in my royal attire (a tiara and pajamas), and do my royal work (of ds106). However, like every week, there has to be a villain and there were TWO this time. But for now, I’ll only mention one: my computer charger.

Yes that is right, after finally getting my computer back to it’s normal state and being virus free (I missed having google chrome so much) my computer charger decides to make my life more challenging. So, the new charger that I got right before Christmas (to replace the 4 year charger I was using) broke. It was not fixable and I had pretty much no battery left on my laptop. So I was pretty much screwed and found myself the next day having to go to Best Buy. But instead of boring you with the details, I’ll let you listen to them.

https://soundcloud.com/krisavball08/karissa-goes-to-bestbuy

What is that screaming at the end? That’s me, because as soon as I got back to plug my computer in, I realized I bought a charger for a netbook and not a laptop. I just seem to be having the worst luck when it comes to technology this semester which is unfortunate since two of my classes are completely online.

So when originally thinking about what to create for this Assignment, I thought about making a part of Cinderella. But then I realized that the story has already been told, and I should make one up on my own. So I decided to do something that  I knew I would talk about no matter what in my blog, the villain of the week. Finding sounds was not hard at all, I used freesound.org to get the typing, walking, car doors, starting car, scanner, and cash register and then I recorded the rest. Importing everything together with Audacity, I noticed on a few of these recordings, especially my own ones that there is a lot of background noise. So that’s when the Noise Removal tool and I became best friends. By simply recording a portion of the static noise, I was able to really make the presentation a lot smoother. Pretty much once I found the sounds it was just simply putting layers everywhere. I wanted to organize it in a nice fashion, so I named each layer and would move them in the order in which they would play. Something which I found the be very useful as well was making the height of each sound bar small so that I could see how everything played out like so:

print screen of sound effects story

By making these small, I could see every layer together to make sure that things were going well. After working and messing around with Audacity, I can say that I am really excited about the program and can’t wait to work with it more! Who would have thought this princess would fall in love…with a computer program (well at least my computer scientist Dad will be happy with that)!

Princess Karissa

Radio Bumper

I was really nervous for this assignment–just like the last one–but once I got going it was really easy–also like the last one.  I just used an O.A.R song I had in my iTunes, loaded it directly into Audacity, cut to the beginning (there were no words.  Tried using the vocal remover but it didn’t work very well), and then recorded my voice on a separate track, mashed the two together, and that was pretty much it.  I also played around with the fade in/out/amplify features on audacity because the music would’ve stomped all over my voice (I’m not really supposed to talk much right now… Fractured two ribs on Monday).  But that was cool.  Really like the sound assignments!

(New) 5 Sound Story: Learning to Play an Instrument

Okay, I have a new 5 sound story, only this time it was done just now and not a few months ago. Also this one only has 7 sounds as opposed to the other one with 19 sounds. Oh well, it’s still fun creating these!

This sound story is about me in the 4th grade attempting to learn how to play an instrument. My dad introduced me to 3 instruments: the piano, the flute, and the clarinet. Despite me practicing for hours every day, I still seemed to be getting nowhere! This was insanely frustrating for me, and I tended to take my anger out on the instrument itself. Turns out all I needed was more practice, because I eventually got the hang of the flute after 2 months of torture. Plus my dad was sick of paying for the damages on the other 2 instruments… I’ve recently picked up the clarinet and piano again to give them another shot!

The Assignment:

“What is a bumper? It is a short recording that identifies the radio station with signature music or an expression that makes sure the listeners know what they are tuned into. So for ds106 it should certainly include “DS106 Radio” and some sort of message about the station with voice over music.”

—————————————————————–

Holy crap I had no IDEA how much time goes into making a 30 second clip.  Well for me it felt like 5 years, but it was probably more like 2 point 267396 hours. ugh.

BUT!  I did manage to eek out a pretty (I think) fun bumper for DS106 radio!

And without further ado…

——————————————————————

What did I do you ask?

1.  Take a deep breath

2.  Close the computer and walk away, grab some Fritos and maybe milk.

3. Brainstorm.

4. GO!

5.  I downloaded audacity.  This was free and easy to use.  Thank you shareware.

6.  I downloaded the converter.  Do this, you wont regret it.  seriously, it is basically impossible to make this work with out this.  It may be called LAME, but it certainly IS. NOT.

7. Watch @cogdogs tutorial.  Don’t skip this step (like I tried to do the first hour or so…)!

8.-2982. try, sample, listen, do-over, try again, listen more, smack-head, walk-away, return, bang the desk, smile, listen some more, watch the tutorial over again, play with dogs, laugh at your own antics, relax, SAVE.

2983. Export to convert to an MP3 file.

2984. Upload to SoundCloud.

2985. Sit back and enjoy! (that’s where I am right now, still have some Fritos left in my bowl too!)
