Roadrunner Takes A Magic Muscroom

For this Recycled Media assignment, I was to use recycled media from past ds106 students to create a story. This was difficult to do, as most of the media was completely unrelated. My idea started with this audio clip, and from there I let my mind run wild until I came up with some sort of coherent story. Here is the final project.

Dead Men Tell No Tales

Jonathan Worth shared a collection of portrait photos he did of Cory Doctorow that we must use to remix, regenerate, and make our own.

I chose to base my remix on one of his book’s, Pirate Cinema.  The plot is centered around a sixteen year boy who loves making movies illegally.  Based in dystopian near-future Britain, this concept is extremely illegal and receives an exaggerated punishment.

To remix a photo of Cory Doctorow, I went with the theme of old-time pirates mixed with copyright.  I wanted him to represent the main character in the book, but exaggerated and with a new twist.  I know the title of the book has no connection with old-time pirates, but that was the first thing that popped into my head!  On his wrist is the copyright symbol that’s been cut through, as well as some scars that he may have received from escaping the authorities.

Here’s the photo before remixing:

Original Cory

And the final product:

Cory Doctorow Pirate

He seems to have a hidden glint in his eye, which says he’s up to something but we’ll never find out what it is!

Recycled!!

A couple of weeks ago we all had to submit old, unused media to this website.  At time we didn’t really know why we were doing it, we were just told it was going to come back up later.  Well it turns out that later is now and that we now have to take at least five different pieces of media and put them together to create a story.  All of the media that we had submitted previously could now be found here.

I was at first quite nervous about what I was going to do with this assignment.  It seemed like it was going to be kind of hard to put together five random pieces of media and make them coherent.  Luckily, as I began flipping though all the different media I found a common thread that I really liked.  Turn out I’m not the only person in this class to likes Disney!! I ended up finding 5 Disney related media pieces and knew I had to go for it.

So my story is a trip to Disney World.  In the background you hear a song from Hercules and in the pictures you see different sights and characters that you’d come across in the park.  The final picture is a greeting card that you could get on your way out to remember your trip forever.

Here is my next remix assignment.  Hope you enjoy it:

What Color is Your World?

This week we had to do six stars of remix on top of the preassigned assignments.  For my next remix assignment I did what color is your world? which is worth two stars.  In this assignment you had to pick a color and photograph it throughout your day.  You then had to pick a song to go along with it that represented that color that you choose.

When trying to think of colors the first color that I thought of what Yellow.  This was largely because I really love the Coldplay song Yellow.  After just a few minutes of tying to take pictures, I quickly realized that I have like nothing that was yellow.   I decided that I was going to have to try to come up with a different song to do this assignment to.  After a few minutes of thinking I realized that I had overlooked the obvious song choice, Red.  I believe I have used this song previously (because it is a Taylor Swift song and I have used just about every Taylor thing possible at this point) but I knew it would be perfect for this.  I started taking pictures for this I realized that Red what a much better fit.  I had a TON of red things just around my room.

After taking pictures, I imported them into iMovie along with the song red.  I played with the effects a bit to make them flow nicely. After that I cropped the song quite a bit.  I choose to go with the original demo version of the song (which was also on her cd) because I thought it fit a bit better.   Throughout the song she talks about a multitude of colors (red being the main one) so I cropped it until I was able to find a part that only had her singing about red. Here is my final product:

2 stars down and 4 to go!

I’m Glad I’m Not The Only Disney Loving Freak

It’s true, I thought when I was creating a theme for my blog for this class, I thought I would be known as that girl who wishes she was a princess (which is still completely accurate). However, I am really glad to see that there are so many other Disney loving people in the class, so much so that I had plenty of material to use for the ds106 recycled remix.

I decided to spice things up a little bit (since it is remix week after all) and wanted to present my information in a less generic way, using a prezi!

Hopefully the music should work (or else I won’t get full credit), but I decided to go with the Hercules riff off (which I ironically created) for the music. I mean after all, it is Disney and about a trip to Disney. The thing that called to me the most actually was the 0.0 icon. I have seen it before on cars and I think it is hysterical. Probably because I hate running more than anything (which is ironic since I was a d3 athlete for 4 years and I also ran track in high school). But anyway, the only time that I think I would ever want to run would be at the Disney Princess Marathon because you get to dress up like a Disney Princess and I would own that costume aspect so well that the Disney rule makers would change how tall Cinderella needs to be to 6 feet and they would hire me. Yeah, I’m pretty confident.

Anyway, I made this in prezi which is a really cool tool to use. It is very easy to import videos and “background music” which was how I got the music in the background! I hope you enjoy!

Stuck in a frame

While Mozilla Popcorn wins the prize for worst/hardest assignment ever in DS106 history, this project ranks pretty high on the challenging list of assignments.

We had to remix a picture (or remix someone else’s remix) of Cory Doctorow. He is a british science fiction author who works under with Creative Common License. Johnathan Worth took pictures of Mr. Doctorow and then asked DS106 students to remix them.

Honestly it took me forever to decide what to do. I looked at a lot of examples of other people’s work and was very impressed. Two of my favorites are Amber (seriously, so amazing!) and Kelsie (so creative!) remixes. Remix has honestly been one of my tougher weeks and I just mulled and mulled over  what to do for days.

Finally I just decided that I was going to be more literal in my work. I loved Kelsie’s remix so much that I decided to use her picture, after all we could remix someone else’s remix. Here is her original picture.

Locked Up!

Here is her inspiration behind her remix:

“I looked on Cory’s website at some of his books and thought that Pirate Cinema seemed really interesting. We are running into copyright and download errors so I thought it would be interesting if I used the theme of this book in my remixed picture of Cory. In this book, the main character gets banned from the internet for a whole year! I can’t imagine not having the internet for a year. I mean not only would I not have homework {which I could get used to} but I wouldn’t be able to go on social media sites, check email, watch videos, or Netflix! Oh man…it would be like being in prison. And that’swhere my inspiration came from.”

Seriously, she made such a good connection!

Anway, for my remix of Kelsie’s remix, I decided I was just going to get a picture of a cinema frame/clip and put Kelsie’s picture into it. I decided upon this because Pirate Cinema is about downloading movies off the internet, and like Kelsie said, you are banned from the internet because it’s illegal. So I thought I’d tie in the more literal side of the book in with Kelsie’s more abstract work. You put those two things together and what do you get?

I used GIMP to make this. I opened the picture and cinema frame as layers and then resized the picture to fix the frame. I thought the distressed cinema frame gave the picture more character.

Mozilla Popcorn = Death

The title of this post really just scratches the surface of my feelings and emotions to the program, Mozilla Popcorn. We were given an assignment to Help Alan go on a Vacation. He created the video and left spaces between the clips for us to insert media.

(I plan on sharing all my issues with the program in this next paragraph, so feel free to skip over it, if you choose.) It too me many, MANY tries over a period of 4 nights to get this thing to work. I started off using Safari, it continually froze, played when I hit pause, wouldn’t play anything, etc. Issue, after issue, after issue. And it lead me to send this text to fellow DS106er, Brittany. And no I am NOT being dramatic! haha

text convo

Then, yesterday, Brittany suggest I download Firefox because she used that and it give her minimal issues. So I did and while I still had issues and it took me almost three hours, I FINALLY finished it. I can saw without a doubt that I’ve never been more annoyed and frustrated with anything in my life. I know the video is still not perfect, because I just couldn’t get it to be with the issues I still dealt with. But hopeful it’s okay enough.

Wild Thang

Probably the best way to describe me is wild. I’m not talking girls gone wild or something like that (especially since my parents and professors are the the only people who read this), but it is certainly me. I have a very unique personality to me and I can pull all nighters without any caffeine (which I think is pretty impressive). I just have tons of energy, I can dance to songs all night and just bounce around. But the thing is I love listening to slow songs. Call me crazy, but I like the slow stuff, it’s the only calmness that it is in my life.

So that’s when I came up with this great idea for a remix assignment, but I had to create it on my own. Check it out here! I am actually really excited to see what things other ds106ers come up with doing! The idea of having a very slow song and an upbeat music video is very interesting to me because of the different dynamic, and it’s even funnier because it’s the same story being told.

So when it came time to think of a song, I knew I was going to do Wild Ones, originally sung (or autotuned) by Flo Rida and the cover is by Timeflies, which is my favorite group. Seriously, I’m so obsessed with them. I have seen them in concert and was completely jealous when I wasn’t able to see them again this week because of darling finals (and being broke). I love the fact that Timeflies slows down this song because you start putting emotion into a song that doesn’t usually have emotions associated with it. I really liked it.

Here is my final product:

I created this using Window’s Movie Maker, and I muted the music video and imported in the mp3. This is always a challenge because I need to make so many different conversions in order for all of the software on my computer to work properly. I swear my computer is going to explode by the time the class is done.

Movie Trailer funfunFUN

This assignment involves picking two movies, and changing their meaning around by switching up the audio with the a totally different video for whatever reason. Here’s what I decided to do:

  1. I went through different Youtube trailers to find just the right two videos. I settled on Insidious and The Ring. The Ring being absolutely terrifying and Insidious not so much.
  2. I used KeepVid to convert them both onto my desktop.
  3. After converting them, I used my movie editor (iMovie) so that I can cut, edit, mix, and match!
  4. I decided to use The Ring trailer with Insidious audio. To successfully do this, I had to detach the audio then shorten it to follow The Ring; all of this can be done by simply right clicking on the selected part. It gives you the option to detach the audio, and to shorten the video length. Luckily, the end of the Insidious audio is just suspenseful music!
  5. I fiddled around until I got my happy results.
  6. I exported it to Youtube!

Here are screen shots to help you along the way:

PART 1

^Looking through Youtube for trailers!

PART 2

^Using KeepVid to convert/download the videos onto my desktop!

PART 3

^Importing to iMovie!

PART 4

^Uploading to Youtube!

Here’s my ending result too!:

All in all, I’m satisfied with my results. It isn’t easy with dialogue to find a movie that goes with it..At least rather well/good enough. However, i’m happy that I did a good job because I really enjoyed how at certain times, when the suspense hit in Insidious audio, it also climaxed in The Ring trailer. This assignment was four star’s and hopefully with tutorial, it becomes a whole lot easier to do!

How To:

This is my how to guide! On today’s listing for how to’s, we’re gonna learn how to do the Actor Transformation assignment!

  1. Find someone you want to do your assignment on. The example showed Lizzie McGuire. For today’s intents and purposes, I’m going to use Dakota Fanning!
  2. Use Youtube like crazy to find clips and clips of your person over time! I’m going to use a couple videos (this, this, this & this!)
  3. After finding these, you use a website to get them from Youtube onto your computer. Personally, I use Keepvid.
  4. Then use whatever Movie Editor that you’re most comfortable with to put all of these clips together. I use iMovie, which works just perfectly.
  5. Export your movie through whatever means; HOWEVER, make sure before you do that that you have your video as unique and original as possible. Although you think it is fair use, you would be surprise. So make sure that you’re making an honest video that is apparent and different than all others.
  6. Upload it to Youtube!

In case you got lost along the way, here’s the process I went through!

step 1

^looking for videos!

step 3

^Using KeepVid to convert them!

step4

^Importing them to whatever movie editor you’re using (this is iMovie)!

step 6

Uploading to Youtube!

Enjoy mine:

The point of this video is to show how over the years, Dakota Fanning has blossomed into a beautiful young woman with phenomenal acting skills. Although many times we see child stars fall off the bandwagon, and become worse inspirations as they get older; Dakota continues to be a role model for girls of all ages. Therefore, it felt appropriate to do an actress that I grew up with and I am proud to say set an excellent example not only for me but for many girls my age as well.
