Tutorial | Cartoon You

I decided to make a easy tutorial to turn any photo into a cartoon, or comic style image.

I used Photoshop CS6, but I’m pretty sure the steps are similar in most recent pS editions.

1.  Open an image

File>Open>choose the image

close self portrait

2.  Convert it to Black and White

Image>Adjustments>Black and White>make any customizations you would like within the menu

close self portrait2

3.  Use the Posterize function

Images>Adjustment>Posterize>3 levels

close self portrait3

4.  Make it an Outline Only

Filter>Filter Gallery>Stylize>Glowing Edges

close self portrait4

5. Invert so you can see what you made!

Image>Adjustments>Invert

close self portrait5

6.  Color that thing in!

Markers, crayons, paint or digital paint…

close self portrait6

Mash Up Assignments | 3 Stars | Doctorow’ed

The Assignment:

Your challenge is to make something new out of the photos, or better yet, remix of someone else’s remix.

Okay, I know we did one of these, but I had such a great time with the photos I decided to do another one.  ( I am not submitting this piece, it is just for this assignment)

Mash Up Assignments | 4 Stars | Time Warp

The Assignment:

Okay so we all watch actors change roles and character. It’s crazy to see what they were like in the beginning of their career compared to now. Find a actor or actress and use film clips to show a metamorphosis.

Another assignment for these past two weeks has been to take the work of author, Cory Doctorow, the photos from Jonathan Worth and make something brand new from it! However, the assignment implies to go beyond that. When making the remix, create a story behind it, behind whatever ideas go through your head when you’re creating a remixed version of this assignment. So before I could dive straight into GIMP and remix it up, I had to look at Cory’s work and all that he was offering.

This assignment had a lot of pressure that came with it too because not only was it going to be graded but many others would also be looking at these as we posted them. Therefore, I really wanted grasp and understand all that Cory was proposing. It was ironic because one of these books were introduced during my senior year of high school, which was Pirate Cinema. But before I go into what the book is about, it’s important to remember that a main theme throughout Doctorow’s work is how copyright is really redundant because every piece of work has been stemmed from someone else’s idea: in 2013, there really is no such thing as being original. Since this is something Cory fights for — for the ability to use whatever you want without fear of infringement unless you’re directly copying it and profiting! So the book covers  the storyline of someone who lives in the far far future where something like copyright carries a much bigger toll than anything we could imagine. The main characters spends the novel fighting his year long ban from the internet, which is a common punishment for small offenses during this time.

With many ideas in mind, I searched through photos and photos that were provided.  Until I found the right one for what i had in mind! When thinking of Pirate Cinema, the first thing that came into to mind was, ‘Man on the run! Hide!’ and how the main character would have to be careful as he attempted to go against the ruling class in order to establish fairness. Therefore, since he was running, he would have to be inconspicuous and camouflage, right? Below is how I played around with GIMP and the different filters until I got my final product, with something i am truly content with. The way I see it is that when you remix someone else’s work, you put on camouflage; new layers, new filters, all that good stuff and while deep down, it may have started out as someone else’s, you’ve made it your own with your own different techniques! Oh, I also chopped it up to prove further that the creative commons really allows you to cut and dice whatever you want with free range.

Burger King!

I can honeslty say this was my least favorite thing I’ve had to do all semester because it relied entirely on an online editor that happened to break down and only work in parts the entire time I worked on it.  It was also very frustrating trying to line up all the clips in the exact spot I wanted them in because they did not lock onto each other at the ends like Mac software or audacity or anything that is convenient to use.

For this assignment, we had to remix a video following the instructions required in Mozilla Popcorn maker.  Here’s my final product.

I cannot recommend this software for anyone that has little patience or for a stress reliever before exams.  Have fun.

Jetskis

For the Favorite Sports Teams Mashup Assignment, we are asked to combine the logo of two or more of your favorite sports teams. I think I have made it obvious throughout the semester that the New York Jets & the New York Yankees are my two favorite teams, so choosing the logos to combine was simple. The more difficult task was figuring out a way to combine the two logos without producing something too ridiculous looking. I used Pixlr to edit my work.

Here is the original Jets logo:

Here is the original Yankees logo:

And after a long while of messing around with the two images, here is the final product. I call it “Jetskis”.

Recycled Media

Using discarded media, I made this little nugget.

It is the story of a simple, fun day in the sun, shared between two people.

I enjoyed this exercise.  What is the saying?  “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Popcorn Tutoring

Tutorial using Popcorn Maker

1. Find your media!

I used the DS106 media bin. I looked around for a few minutes and tried to connect pieces. If you’re limited in your media, like I was, I would try looking for the sounds/video clips first since those will usually be the most scarce. I found two sound clips: birds chirping + a clip with fire burning something then a woman’s scream. With those two in mind, I looked at the photos and images and tried to build a story around it.

2. Upload the media somewhere.

To use audio and video with  Popcorn Maker, you have to upload the media to YouTube or SoundCloud. I only used sound, so I uploaded both of them to SoundCloud.

For the images, I found that Popcorn Maker was being moody and kept rotating my images in weird ways. So, to remedy this, I uploaded them to Imageshack. You can use whichever site works best for you, though.

3. Once you have your media uploaded, you go to the Popcorn Maker site and hit the Start a Project button to create a new piece.

4. Add your music and video first under the Media tab. This way, you have somewhere to put your pictures so they can relate to the music/sounds.

5. Add your images under the Events tab.

Because my images were rather small on the preview, I enlarged them by clicking and dragging the corners.

6. Arrange your images to create your story on the timeline.

7. Once you are finished, you hit save, and voila!  A finished Popcorn Maker story.

Trailer Mashup Tutorial

This tutorial is for the Movie Trailer Mashup assignment.

You can see my blog post about my work here.

This is the video that I made using the same steps you can read about below.

Tutorial for Windows Movie Maker

1. Find your trailers! I would suggest finding “opposites.” So if you want to work with a romantic movie, find a horror or super raunchy trailer to contrast. If you want to work with a horror movie, find a comedy trailer.

2. Once you have your YouTube links, use something like PwnYouTubeFastest YouTube Downloader, or KeepVid to download both videos. If your downloader of choice allows you to download just the audio of videos, then that may be a better option when downloading the trailer that you just want the audio from!

3. Open the trailer (“Add videos and photos” button) that you want to use as video in Windows Movie Maker. Once you have it on the timeline, click on “Add Music.”

4. Now, Windows Movie Maker will only show audio files in the popped-up window. If you have a video, though, you need to see .MP4 files, .FLV files, etc, too! So click on the bottom right hand corner that has a dropdown menu that says “Audio and Music.” Click “Audio and Video” or “Video” or “All” to see your video files. Click the file that you want to use as music and hit open!

5. Now that you have both files open (one should be video and below that should be the audio), you can drag and move the audio to line up with the video where you think it should.

6. Watch the clip back a few times and find places that you need to clip. You can do this in the Video Edit tab. Trimming is your friend!

7. Once you have a video you are proud of, you can save it for the web. Hit “File” –> “Save Movie.” Hover over the bottom button with a down arrow. This will scroll through the options you have to save. If you are uploading to YouTube (which I’d assume most people are), you should hit the YouTube settings button. Change the name to what you would like it to be.

8. Then upload it to YouTube! Tada!

Windows Movie Maker makes this very easy to do.

Evil Twilight – ????

Another assignment that just… spoke to me: Movie Trailer Mashup.

Take your favorite movie trailer and mash it up with a different trailer to completely change the meaning of the original trailer. For example, if you have a funny movie trailer, give it the sound of a terrifying movie; or vice versa.

It took me a few minutes of thinking, but then I knew the movie trailer I needed to mash up for my own entertainment: Twilight (2008). Who doesn’t like a good spoof?

Now the task was to find a trailer with audio that matched the video of Twilight. I searched a lot of dark, horror films that have come out in the past year, and then found Evil Dead (2013).

You can see both trailers below:

I only had to do a little editing at the beginnings and ends of both clips to have them match up. I tried taking out pieces/speeding up the sound to have it match up better, but it created jumps that stood out far too much for me.

I used PwnYouTube and Windows Movie Maker for this one. Adobe Premiere Pro hasn’t been working for me lately, so I had to work with what I had.
